Multifrequency tympanometry (MFT), using probe frequencies ranging from 226-2,000 Hz, was performed on normal chinchillas to obtain normative data against which to compare results from animals with middle ear pathology. A series of validating experiments was conducted to determine the effects of anatomical alterations of the middle ear on MFT. These included artificially extending the ear canal, opening the bulla, injecting saline into the middle ear, and disrupting the ossicular chain. The results indicate that MFT characteristics of chinchilla ears are qualitatively similar to those observed in normal humans and patients with middle ear disease, and MFT provides information that is not available from the 226-Hz tympanogram. 相似文献

Hybrid methods have been known for a long time as very efficient algorithms for attenuation correction in single-photon emission computed tomography, but only recently have efforts been made to formulate them with more rigorous mathematics. This has allowed us to explain their efficiency in terms of approximate inversion, and to establish a convergence condition. The present study focuses on the convergence problem and emphasizes the question of symmetry. Hybrid method operators are not symmetrical; therefore the convergence condition is not easily verified. New schemes based on a modified conjugate gradient method are presented. Convergence is proved and performances are shown to be at least as good as the standard hybrid schemes on perfect and noisy simulated data. 相似文献

PURPOSE: To quantitatively assess all gamma-ray induced chromosomal changes confined to one human chromosome using fluorescence microscopy and in situ hybridization with a fluorescently labeled human chromosome specific nucleic acid probe. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Synchronized human-hamster hybrid cells containing human chromosome 11 were obtained by a modified mitotic shake-off procedure. G1 phase cells (> 95%) were irradiated with 137Cs gamma rays (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 Gy) at a dose rate of 1.1 Gy/min and mitotic cells collected 16-20 h later; chromosomal spreads were prepared, denatured, and hybridized with a fluorescein-tagged nucleic acid probe against total human DNA. Chromosomes were examined by fluorescence microscopy and all categories of change involving the human chromosome 11 as target, recorded. RESULTS: Overall, of the 3104 human-hamster hybrid cells examined, 82.1% were euploid, of which 88.6% contained one copy of human chromosome 11, 6.2% contained two copies, and 5.2% contained 0 copies. This is compatible with mitotic nondisjunction in a small fraction of cells. Of the remaining 17.9% of cells, 85.2% were tetraploid cells with two copies of human chromosome 11. For all aberrations involving human chromosome 11 there was a linear relationship between yield and absorbed dose of 0.1 aberrations per chromosome per Gy. The yield of dicentrics, translocations, and terminal deletions that involve one lesion on the human chromosome was linear, while the yield of interstitial deletions that arise from two interacting lesions on the human chromosome was curvilinear. The frequencies of dicentrics and translocations were about equal, while there was a high (40-60%) incidence of incomplete exchanges between human and hamster chromosomes. CONCLUSIONS: Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) procedures allow for the efficient detection of a broad range of induced changes in target chromosomes. Symmetrical exchanges induced in G1 (translocations) were readily scored and found to equate with the complementary asymmetrical exchanges (dicentrics). That is, nonlethal stable changes, which might be of concern in carcinogenic processes, complement lethal, unstable changes. Interstitial deletions that may contribute to the loss of antioncogenes as well as to lethality are also readily detected with enhanced levels detected at higher doses. The high level of induced terminal deletions and of incomplete dicentrics and translocations indicate a partial failure of interaction between lesions induced in human and hamster DNA, and suggest that such interspecies interactions lack the fidelity of intraspecies DNA lesion interactions. Deuterated 3-trimethylsilylpropionic acid binding to bovine serum albumin was used as a model system to examine the feasibility and limitations of using the deuterium off-resonance rotating frame spin-lattice relaxation experiment for the study of equilibrium ligand-binding behavior to proteins. The results of this study demonstrate that the rotational-diffusion behavior of the bound species can be monitored directly, i.e., the observed correlation time of the ligand in the presence of a protein is approximately equal to the correlation time of the ligand in the bound state, provided that the fraction of bound ligand is at least 0.20. The presence of local ligand motion and/or chemical exchange contributions to relaxation in the bound state was inferred from the observation that the correlation time of the bound ligand was somewhat smaller than the correlation time characterizing the overall tumbling of the protein. An approximate value for the fraction of bound ligand was obtained from off-resonance relaxation experiments when supplemental spin-lattice or transverse relaxation times were employed in the analysis. Incorporation of local motion effects for the bound species into the theoretical relaxation formalism enabled the evaluation of an order parameter and an effective correlation time, which in conjunction with a wobbling in a cone model, provided additional information about ligand motion in the bound state. 相似文献

It has long been accepted that the response of T cells to a protein antigen is strongly influenced by parameters governing processing and presentation of the immunodominant epitopes. Recent evidence has suggested, however, that subtle changes in the nature of the ligand itself may also affect the outcome of T-cell receptor (TCR) ligation, necessitating a re-evaluation of previously accepted paradigms of T-cell activation. In particular, activation may no longer be regarded as an all-or-nothing event, but appears to involve both quantitative and qualitative dimensions. This revolution in our understanding has emanated from the recent discovery that analogues of immunogenic peptides, so-called altered peptide ligands (APLs), may elicit a subset of normal activation events, or profoundly influence responses to the wild-type epitope. As such, the potential offered by APLs for modifying the outcome of deleterious immune responses involved in autoimmunity has not passed unnoticed. Indeed, the design and exploitation of novel reagents based on the structure of autoantigenic epitopes has enjoyed some measure of success in the treatment of experimental models of autoimmune disease and holds promise for their exploitation within the clinical arena. 相似文献

When Ss were required to interpolate a scale division into tenths, Churchill was unable to confirm the "law" of constant visual angle. In this his result disagrees with other research on interpolation into fifths, which has become the basis of a forthcoming British Standard Institution recommendation. A skeletal anchorage system was developed for tooth movements. It consists of a titanium miniplate that is temporarily implanted in the maxilla or the mandible as an immobile anchorage. In this article, we introduce the skeletal anchorage system to intrude the lower molars in open-bite malocclusion and evaluate the results of treatment in two severe open-bite cases that underwent orthodontic treatment with the system. Titanium miniplates were fixed at the buccal cortical bone around the apical regions of the lower first and second molars on both the right and left sides. Elastic threads were used as a source of orthodontic force to reduce excessive molar height. The lower molars were intruded about 3 to 5 mm, and open-bite was significantly improved with little if any extrusion of the lower incisors. No serious side-effects were observed during the orthodontic treatment. The system was also very effective for controlling the cant and level of the occlusal plane during orthodontic open-bite correction. 相似文献

We reviewed the records of 243 patients treated at 271 disc levels to determine the incidence of side effects and complications of percutaneous nucleotomy. In our early experience there were 7 technical failures (2.5% of all attempts), of which 6 were at the 5th disc level. The success rate dropped from 67% at 3 months to 60% 1 year after treatment due to recurrences in 16 patients (6.6%). Extruded or sequestered fragments were found in 6 patients (2.4%), and may have been caused by nucleotomy. However, only one was accompanied by aggravation of symptoms. Discitis was seen in 2 patients (0.8%), both treated at two separate disc levels. About half the patients experienced increased low back pain, mean duration 9 days, after treatment, and 3 (1.2%), of whom 2 also had nonorganic disorders, needed admission to hospital because of severe pain. Mild spasm and a sensation of instability were noted by 9.6% and 25% of the patients respectively. Injury to nerves, bowels, vessels or ureters or a dural leak never occurred. The study confirms earlier reports that the rate of serious complications is low. 相似文献

Central midface concavity was corrected with the placement of porous polyethylene implants in the paranasal area. This simulated the effect of skeletal osteotomies and advancement without altering dental occlusion. Implants were placed to correct congenital, posttraumatic, and cleft-related skeletal midface retrusion in nine patients. In seven of the patients, paranasal augmentation was performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty. There have been no implant-related complications during a mean 33-month follow-up (range 5 to 83 months). Screw fixation of these implants ensures stable positioning and allows precise final contouring during surgery. 相似文献

With respect to the often-present covariance between error terms of correlated variables, D. W. Zimmerman and R. H. Williams's (1977) adjusted correction for attenuation estimates the strength of the pairwise correlation between true scores without assuming independence of error scores. This article focuses on the derivation and analysis of formulas that perform the same function for partial and part correlation coefficients. Values produced by these formulas lie closer to the actual true-score coefficient than do the observed-score coefficients or those obtained by using C. Spearman's (1904) correction for attenuation. The new versions of the formulas thus allow analysts to use hypothetical values for error-score correlations to estimate values for the partial and part correlations between true scores while disregarding the independence-of-errors assumption.
