“What's to keep you from dropping out?” Student Immigration into and within Engineering

Nearly one‐half of the industrial engineering undergraduate interviewees in an investigation of their degree program indicated they previously had been enrolled in another major. Understanding why these students chose to remain in or enter a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) major when their previous choice lost its appeal is an important piece of the STEM participation puzzle. Our data indicate effective formal and informal recruiting, contact with dynamic individuals who conveyed commitment to and excitement about the department and program, and a department that welcomed immigrants and promoted a clear, relevant image of its discipline's identity, influenced student decisions to relocate within STEM rather than attrite. The high proportion of females within the immigrant students is one factor contributing to the department's attainment of sex parity. Our students' stories offer lessons to other departments for attracting and retaining students who enter the higher education STEM pipeline.

Molecular structure of As<Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">x</Emphasis></Subscript>Se<Subscript>100 − <Emphasis Type="Italic">x</Emphasis></Subscript> glasses studied by x-ray spectroscopy

As _x Se_{100 ? x} (0 ≤ x ≤ 50) chalcogenide glasses have been studied using measurements of the relative integrated intensity of the last emission line in the Se x-ray spectrum. The results demonstrate that the composition dependence of the relative integrated intensity parameter of selenium, R _Se, can be understood in terms of three different coordinations of selenium atoms in the glass network: Se-Se-Se, As-Se-Se, and As-Se-As. R _Se is shown to correlate with the rigidity of the glass network, characteristic of selenium-containing binary chalcogenide glasses.

Molecular Simulation of Joule–Thomson Inversion Curves

A method to determine Joule–Thomson inversion curves, using isobaric-isothermal Monte Carlo molecular simulations, is presented. The usual experimental practice to obtain the locus of points in which the isenthalpic derivative of temperature with respect to pressure vanishes is to process volumetric data by means of thermodynamic relations. This experimental procedure requires the very precise measurement of volumetric properties at conditions up to five times the fluid's critical temperature and twelve times its critical pressure. These harsh experimental conditions have hindered the publication of data for even simple fluids and mixtures. By using molecular simulation, these problems may be circumvented, since the computational effort is roughly independent of the actual value of the pressure or the temperature. In general, Joule–Thomson inversion curves obtained by molecular simulation may be used either as an unambiguous test for equations of state in the supercritical and high-pressure regions or for the prediction of real fluid behavior, should the potential be well known. Both applications are exemplified for a Lennard-Jones fluid for which the complete inversion curve is obtained.

排除珠江S-201相机故障一例

〔故障现象）照片底部有一条宽约3－5毫米的楔形黑边，而且各张都有，观察底片，发现底片底部也有一形状相同的白边，且各卷都有此毛病，排除洗印部门责任，断定是照相机的问题。［故障分析与修理］打开B门并以快门线锁定，使照相机镜头对强光处，观察取景框周边，发现取景框上前方有一黑色条状物体挡住了光线，仔细观察这一黑色物体，原来是位于反光镜后部，反光镜与承接支架之间的铜箔边缘过宽所致。找到了故障根源，便利用小剪刀，小心地将铜箔边缘的多余部分去除，故障便排除了。排除珠江S-201相机故障一例@王长喜
