To improve the pervaporation performance in separating an aqueous ethanol solution, polyamide thin‐film composite (TFC) membranes (m‐tolidine‐H‐TMC/mPAN) were prepared through the interfacial polymerization reaction between trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and 2,2'‐dimethylbenzidine hydrochloride (m‐tolidine‐H) on the surface of a modified polyacrylonitrile (mPAN) membrane. The effects of the feed ethanol concentration on the pervaporation performance and the durability of m‐tolidine‐H‐TMC/mPAN TFC membranes were investigated. To choose the optimal mPAN membrane as the TFC substrate, the effect of hydrolysis time on the chemical properties and separation performance of an mPAN substrate was also studied. An appropriate hydrolysis time of 15 min was chosen to obtain the mPAN substrate due to the corresponding high permeation flux. The m‐tolidine‐H‐TMC/mPAN TFC membrane exhibited a high pervaporation performance for ethanol dehydration. A positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy experiment was used to estimate the mean free‐volume radius of the m‐tolidine‐H‐TMC polyamide selective layer, which lay between the radii of the water and ethanol molecules. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

To investigate the variation in the fine structure of polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) membranes prepared via two different interfacial polymerization conditions (IP-I and IP-II), experiments on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), water contact angle, and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) coupled to a slow positron beam were conducted. Polyamide TFC membranes were prepared via the interfacial polymerization reaction between triethylenetetramine (TETA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the surface of a modified polyacrylonitrile (mPAN) membrane. Compared with the polyamide TFC membrane prepared via IP-I, the polyamide layer prepared via IP-II showed a shorter S plateau length (thinner thickness), a higher o-Ps intensity I3 value (higher free-volume concentration), and a smaller o-Ps lifetime τ3 value (smaller free-volume size), resulting in higher permeation rate and separation factor obtained from the pervaporative separation of a 70 wt% isopropanol aqueous solution at 25 °C.  相似文献

Organosilica bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTESE) membranes were explored for pervaporation dehydration of binary and ternary mixtures of ethyl acetate (EA) by undiluted sol coating combined with flash firing. Three BTESE membranes (M1, M2, and M3) were fabricated on macroporous supports by varying BTESE concentrations (0.5, 2.5, and 5 wt% BTESE, respectively) in polymer sols. The membranes were characterized by DLS, SEM, FTIR, XRD, contact angle, AFM, and pervaporation performance to discuss the effect of the BTESE contents in the polymer sol on the formation and dehydration performance of resulting organosilica membranes. It was found that 5 wt% loading of BTESE led to a highly selective membrane for dehydration of EA/H2O mixture. Among the synthesized membranes, M3 delivered flux of 0.84 ± 0.05 kg.m−2.h−1 with a selectivity of >10,000 for EA/H2O mixture (98/2 wt%) at 60°C. The time course of pervaporation dehydration for the EA/H2O mixture (95/5 wt%) confirms the stability of BTESE membrane in the investigated time period of 120 h. Further, the membrane exhibited excellent selectivity larger than 10,000 for separation of ternary mixtures (90/2/8 wt%) of ethyl acetate/ethanol/water and n-propyl acetate/isopropanol/water respectively, the composition of which is similar to the top product of the distillation column used in the industrial esterification process. The best separation performance and excellent acid stability of BTESE membranes in this study suggest that the simple synthesis protocol of undiluted sol coating and flash firing will provide a cost-effective, quick, and efficient synthesis route for practical membrane based applications.  相似文献

In this study, a fabricated hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol‐co‐ethylene) (PVA‐co‐PE) nanofiber membrane was used as the middle support layer to prepare thin film composite (TFC) membranes for nanofiltration. The effects of the supporting nonwoven layer, grams per square meter (GSM) of nanofiber, reaction time, heat treatment, monomer concentration, operating pressure, and pH value on the separation performance of the TFC membranes were analyzed. These results show that the TFC membranes prepared with the PVA‐co‐PE nanofiber membrane can be used to filtrate different metal ions. For NaCl, Na2SO4, CaCl2, CuCl2, CuSO4, and methyl orange solutions, the rejection rates of the TFC membrane with nonwoven polyester as the supporting layer and a nanofiber GSM of 12.8 g/m2 are 87.9%, 93.4%, 92.0%, 93.1%, 95.8%, and 100%, respectively. This indicates the potential application of the PVA‐co‐PE nanofiber membrane in the preparation of nanofiltration and reverse‐osmosis TFC membranes. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study, Schiff base network (SNW)-1 nanoparticles with high hydrophilicity and large specific surface area were used to prepare polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which were evaluated for ethanol dehydration. Because of the low difference of density between SNW-1 and PVA, the as-prepared nanoparticles can be uniformly distributed into the PVA active layer. The effects of SNW-1 loading, feed temperature, and water concentration on pervaporation (PV) performance were further studied. The results showed the MMM with 10 wt% of SNW-1 loading exhibited a separation factor of 1,501 and a permeation flux of 187 g m−2 h−1 for feeding 95 wt% ethanol/water binary solution at 75°C. Overall, the SNW-1/PVA MMMs showed great prospect in ethanol dehydration via PV.  相似文献

The active aromatic polyamide layers of thin film composite nanofiltration (NF‐TFC) membranes were prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) from three different types of polyamine: p‐phenylenediamine (PPD), m‐phenylenediamine (MPD), or piperazine (PRP), and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on polysulfone/sulfonated polysulfone (PSf/SPSf) alloy substrates. Chemical components, cross section structures, and thermal properties of the polyamide active layers and the bulk membranes, characterized by Fourier transfer IR spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry, respectively, revealed an interpenetrating layer between the polyamide active layer and the substrate. A ridge–valley structural active layer was formed on the PSf/SPSf substrate for the NF‐TFC membrane with a thick polyacrylamide (PA) layer. Compared with the NF‐TFC membranes on PSf substrates, those on PSf/SPSf alloy substrates had a higher permeability without losing the selectivity by introducing the hydrophilic SPSf into the hydrophobic PSf substrates. The binding between the modified substrate and the active PA layer was also improved. Good separation performances using these NF‐TFC membranes were obtained in the polyvalent ion separation, the ground water softening, and the treatment of wastewater from adipic acid plants in a wide pH range. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble polyimides derived from 3,3′,4,4′‐benzhydrol tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BHTDA) with various diamines such as 1,4‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)‐2‐tert‐butylbenzene (BATB), 1,4‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)‐2,5‐di‐tert‐butylbenzene (BADTB), and 2,2′‐dimethyl‐4,4′‐ bis(4‐aminophenoxy)biphenyl (DBAPB) were investigated for pervaporation separation of ethanol/water mixtures. Diamine structure effect on the pervaporation of 90 wt% aqueous ethanol solution through the BHTDA‐based polyimide membranes was studied. The separation factor ranked in the following order: BHTDA–DBAPB > BHTDA–BATB > BHTDA–BADTB. The increase in molecular volume for the substituted group in the polymer backbone increased the permeation rate. As the feed ethanol concentration increased, the permeation rate increased, while the water concentration in the permeate decreased for all polyimide membranes. The optimum pervaporation performance was obtained by the BHTDA–DBAPB membrane with a 90 wt% aqueous ethanol solution, giving a separation factor of 141, permeation rate of 255 g m?2 h?1 and 36 000 pervaporation separation index (PSI) value. The dehydration of alcohol/water mixtures using pervaporation membranes requires less energy than is required by conventional separation technologies. In this paper, we report electrostatically enhanced graphene oxide (GO) membranes for the highly efficient pervaporation dehydration of C2–C4 alcohol/water mixtures. Positively charged molecules were introduced as the interlayer of negatively charged GO layers via layer-by-layer assembly, thereby creating an electrostatic attraction that drives the assembly of GO nanosheets into ordered interlayer channels. The effects of the feed temperature, water concentration, and continuous operation on the membrane transport behavior were systematically investigated. In the dehydration of 90 wt% alcohol/water mixtures at 70°C, the membrane exhibited ethanol/water, isopropanol/water, and n-butanol/water fluxes of 2.35, 2.98, and 4.69 kg/(m2 hr), respectively, as well as separation factors for the same mixtures of 3,390, 5,790, and 4,680, respectively. This excellent alcohol/water dehydration performance outperforms those of state-of-the-art polymeric membranes and GO-based membranes.  相似文献

Oil–water separation has attracted research interest due to the damages of oily wastewater caused to the environment and human beings. Electrospun fiber membrane has high oil–water separation performance. A nanofibers membrane with multi-stage roughness was prepared by electrospinning using poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF)-silica blend solution as raw material. The result shows that the water contact angle (WCA) of the nanofibers membrane was promoted from 138.5 ± 1° to 150.0 ± 1.5° when the SiO2 content was increased from 0 to 3 wt%. The nanofibers membranes exhibited excellent separation efficiency (99 ± 0.1%) under gravity drive, with high separation flux of 1857 ± 101 L·m−2·h−1. More importantly, the obtained PVDF-SiO2 nanofibers membranes showed excellent multi-cycle performance and stable chemical resistance, which would make them great advantages for the practical application of oil–water separation.  相似文献

Metallic ion-cross-linked polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) thin-film composite (TFC) membranes supported on an ultraviolet (UV)-cross-linked porous substrate were fabricated. The UV-cross-linked porous substrate was prepared via polymerization-induced phase separation. The PIM-1 TFC membranes were fabricated via a dip-coating procedure. Metallic ion-cross-linked PIM-1 TFC membranes were fabricated by hydrolyzing the PIM-1 TFC membrane in an alkali solution and then cross-linking it in a multivalent metallic ion solution. The pore size and porous structures were evaluated by low-temperature N2 adsorption–desorption analysis. The membrane structure was investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The effects of heat treatment and pore-forming additives on the gas permeance of the UV-cross-linked porous substrate are reported. The effects of different pre-coating treatments on the gas permeance of the metallic ion-cross-linked PIM-1 TFC membrane are also discussed. The metallic ion-cross-linked PIM-1 TFC membrane displayed high CO2/N2 selectivity (23) and good CO2 permeance (1058 GPU).  相似文献

Development and use of novel membranes for forward osmosis (FO) applications have gained popularity throughout the world. To enhance FO membrane performance, a novel thin-film nanocomposite membrane was fabricated by interfacial polymerization incorporating Fullerenol (C60(OH)n) nanomaterial, having n in the range of 24–28 into the active layer. Different concentrations of fullerenol loading (100, 200, 400, and 800 ppm) were added to the top skin layer. The structural and surface properties of the pure thin-film composite membrane (TFC) and fullerenol-incorporated thin-film nanocomposite (FTFC) membranes, were characterized by ATR-FTIR, SEM, and AFM. FO performance and separation properties were evaluated in terms of water flux, reverse salt flux, antifouling propensity, water permeability and salt permeability for all TFC and FTFC membranes. Osmotic performance tests showed that FTFC membranes achieved higher water flux and reverse salt flux selectivity compared with those of TFC membranes. The FTFC membrane with a fullerenol loading of 400 ppm exhibited a water flux of 26.1 L m?2 h?1 (LMH), which is 83.03% higher than that of the TFC membrane with a specific reverse salt flux of 0.18 g/L using 1 M sodium chloride draw solution against deionized water in FO mode. The fullerenol incorporation in FTFC membranes also contributed to a decreased fouling propensity.  相似文献

The poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) grafted titanium dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized and added to the substrate of flat‐sheet thin film composite forward osmosis (TFC‐FO) membranes. The hydrophilicity of substrate was improved, which was advantageous to enhance the water flux of TFC‐FO membranes. The membranes containing a 3 wt % TiO2‐PHEMA in the substrate exhibited a finger‐like structure combined with sponge‐like structure, while those with lower or without TiO2‐PHEMA content showed fully finger‐like structures. As for FO performance, the TFC‐FO membranes with 3 wt % TiO2‐PHEMA content achieved the highest water flux of 42.8 LMH and 24.2 LMH against the DI water using 2M NaCl as the draw solution tested under the active layer against draw solution (AL‐DS) mode and active layer against feed solution (AL‐FS) mode, respectively. It was proven that the hydrophilic property of membrane substrates was a strong factor influencing the water flux in FO tests. Furthermore, the structural parameter was remarkably decreased with an increase of TiO2‐PHEMA content in membrane substrate, indicating the reducing of internal concentration polarization. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Outer‐selective thin‐film composite (TFC) hollow fiber membranes offer advantages like less fiber blockage in the feed stream and high packing density for industrial applications. However, outer‐selective TFC hollow fiber membranes are rarely commercially available due to the lack of effective ways to remove residual reactants from fiber's outer surface during interfacial polymerization and form a defect‐free polyamide film. A new simplified method to fabricate outer‐selective TFC membranes on tribore hollow fiber substrates is reported. Mechanically robust tribore hollow fiber substrates containing three circular‐sector channels were first prepared by spinning a P84/ethylene glycol mixed dope solution with delayed demixing at the fiber lumen. The thin wall tribore hollow fibers have a large pure water permeability up to 300 L m?2 h?1 bar?1. Outer‐selective TFC tribore hollow fiber membranes were then fabricated by interfacial polymerization with the aid of vacuum sucking to ensure the TFC layer well‐attached to the substrate. Under forward osmosis studies, the TFC tribore hollow fiber membrane exhibits a good water flux and a small flux difference between active‐to‐draw (i.e., the active layer facing the draw solution) and active‐to‐feed (i.e., the active layer facing the feed solution) modes due to the small internal concentration polarization. A hyperbranched polyglycerol was further grafted on top of the newly developed TFC tribore hollow fiber membranes for oily wastewater treatment. The membrane displays low fouling propensity and can fully recover its water flux after a simple 20‐min water wash at 0.5 bar from its lumen side, which makes the membrane preferentially suitable for oil‐water separation. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 4491–4501, 2015  相似文献

Inorganic membranes and particularly zeolite membranes are usually used for the dehydration of organic solvents by pervaporation (PV). This work reports an experimental study on the PV dehydration of ethylene glycol (EG)/water mixtures using commercial nanoporous NaA zeolite membranes. The concentration range investigated (CEG > 70 wt %) was selected according to existing industrial requirements. The recirculation flow rate was kept at a value of 1.5 L/min. The fluxes and separation factors were monitored as the dehydration proceeded. In addition, the activation energy of permeation (Ea) was calculated. The effect of temperature was investigated in the range 50–70 °C. The results obtained demonstrated the successful performance of the membrane for the dehydration of EG/water mixtures. It was observed that at 70 °C and with 70 wt % initial EG concentration, larger fluxes and separation factors could be obtained, i.e., 0.94 kg m–2h–1 and 1177, respectively. The Pervaporation Separation Index (PSI) of the membrane was found to be high compared to that of polymeric membranes.  相似文献

Thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes with defined porous structure of the separation layer are desirable for the concentration of neutral solute and separation of salts from a mixture. Herein, we report the formation of TFC membranes composed of polyamide (PA) separation layer by the interfacial polymerization between new dextran‐butyl amine (Dex‐NH2) macromonomer and trimesoyl chloride on polysulfone support membrane. The membranes prepared with 1%–1.5% (wt/vol) of Dex‐NH2 exhibited water permeance of 110–116 L m?2 h?1 MPa?1 with 62%–71% rejection of Na2SO4 and 12%–14% rejection of MgCl2. The membranes also showed about 91% rejection of poly(ethylene glycol) of molecular weight 2000 g/mol and about 11% rejection of NaCl. A decrease in permeance and ions selectivity was observed with increasing concentration of Dex‐NH2. The dextran chains attached to the PA network restrict the diffusion of Dex‐NH2 toward the interfacial zone and thereby assist the formation of porous and thin PA layer compared to that when free amine (alkyl diamine) was used. These membranes are applicable for the separation of small molecular weight neutral solutes from mixture containing monovalent salts. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A novel polyzwitterionic hydrogel coated mixed matrix membrane (MMM) was successfully prepared, characterized and used for Cu2+, Mn2+, and Pb2+ heavy metal ions removal from water. Hydrophilic and porous covalent organic framework (COF) nanoparticles (NP) as filler were synthesized from melamine and terephthalaldehyde, and then incorporated into polyamide (PA) thin film composite (TFC) membrane. The hydrogel coating was applied by using a tailored cross-linkable polymer system in combination with concentration polarization enabled cross-linking. The effects of COF NP loading into PA layer and polyzwitterionic hydrogel coating on the membrane morphology and separation performance were studied using different analyses. The MMM prepared with a COF NP loading of 0.02 wt/wt% in the hexane dispersion used for NP deposition during PA layer formation (leading to 0.42 g/m2) exhibited an increased pure water permeability of around 200% compared with the neat PA TFC membrane while the Mn2+ ion rejection maintained above 98%. Scanning electron microscopy surface images and zeta potential profiles showed that the hydrogel was successfully deposited on the membrane surface. Furthermore, the hydrogel coating could decrease net surface charge of membranes but did not significantly influence the heavy metal ions rejections under nanofiltration conditions. The results of filtration experiment with protein solution indicated that the hydrogel coated membranes exhibited superior antifouling property, as shown by higher flux recovery ratio after washing with water, compared with neat PA TFC membrane and not coated MMM, respectively.  相似文献

Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were fabricated by interfacial polymerization of a polyamide (PA) layer on the shell side of hollow fiber membrane supports. TiO2 nanoparticle loadings in the thin-film layer were 0.01, 0.05, and 0.20 wt %. Nanoparticle-free PA thin-film composite (TFC) membranes served as the comparative basis. The TFN membranes were characterized in terms of the chemical composition, structure, and surface properties of the separation layer. Incorporating nanoTiO2 improved membrane permeability up to 12.6-fold. During preliminary laboratory-scale evaluation, TFN membranes showed lower salt rejection but higher TOC rejection in comparisons with the corresponding values for TFC controls. Based on the performance in lab-scale tests, TFN membranes with 0.01 wt % nanoTiO2 loading were selected for an evaluation at the pilot scale with synthetic surface water as the feed. While the permeate flux during long-term pilot-scale operation gradually decreased for TFC membranes, TFN membranes had a higher initial permeate flux that gradually increased with time. The TOC rejection by TFN and TFC membranes was comparable. We conclude that TFN membranes show promise for full-scale surface water treatment applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. The fouling behavior of polyamide thin‐film composite (TFC) membranes modified with amino‐ and diethylamino‐cyclodextrins (CDs) through an in situ interfacial polymerization process is reported. Modified polyamide TFC membranes exhibited improved hydrophilicity, water permeability, and fouling resistance as compared to the unmodified TFC membranes, while restricting the passage of NaCl salt (98.46 ± 0.5%). The increase in hydrophilicity was attributed to the secondary and tertiary hydroxyl groups of the CDs, which were not aminated. The membranes modified with amino‐CDs had increased surface roughness while the membranes modified with diethylamino‐CDs had smoother surfaces. However, despite the surface roughness of the membranes modified with amino‐CDs, low fouling was observed due to the highly hydrophilic surfaces, which superseded the roughness. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid membranes combining the merits of both polymer matrices and fillers have drawn extensive attention. The rational design of polymer–filler interface in hybrid membranes is vitally important for reducing the occurrence of void defects. Herein, imine-type covalent organic frameworks(COFs) were selected as the fillers due to their totally organic nature and multi-functionalities. Mussel-inspired dopamine-modified sodium alginate(Alg DA) was synthesized as the polymer matrix. The dopamine modification significantly improves the Alg DA–COF compatibility, which enhances the COF content up to 50 wt% in the hybrid membranes. The improved interfacial compatibility enhances the membrane separation selectivity. Accordingly, when utilized for dehydration of ethanol/water mixed solution(water concentration of 10 wt%), the hybrid membrane reveals high water concentration of ~98.7 wt% in permeate, and stable permeation flux larger than 1500 g·m~(-2)·h~(-1). This work might afford useful insights for fabricating hybrid membranes with high separation selectivity by optimizing the polymer–filler interface.  相似文献

Polyvinyl alcohol–tetraethoxysilane–perfluorosulfonic acid (PVA–TEOS–PFSA) hybrid membrane was prepared by sol–gel method through PVA being modified doubly by PFSA and TEOS. With polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane as a substrate membrane, PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane was fabricated by dip-coating method for pervaporation (PV) dehydration of ethyl acetate (EAc) aqueous solution. The hybrid membrane was characterized by swelling degree, static contact angle, Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscope. Effects of PFSA and TEOS contents in coating solution on PV performance of composite membrane were investigated, respectively. With increasing PFSA content, the permeation flux of composite membrane increased, while the separation factor decreased. Just the opposite, the increase of TEOS content resulted in the decrease in permeation flux and the increase in separation factor. In addition, the PV performances of composite membranes were also investigated at different feed temperatures and water concentrations in feed, respectively. The PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane, which was prepared from coating with PVA/PFSA mass ratio of 80/20 and TEOS content of 20 wt%, exhibited the permeation flux of 347.9 g m?2 h?1 and the separation factor of 2218 for PV dehydration of 2 wt% water of EAc solution at 40 °C.  相似文献
