CNPC Speeds up Overseas Oil Assets Purchase Plan

China National Petroleum Corporation(CNPC),the country's largest oil and gas producer,will speed up overseas acquisitions in regions such as Africa,Asia-Pacific and South America this year.Currently,the company is in talks with foreign partners for several deals because the relatively low prices of overseas assets this year have offered the company unprecedented opportunities for acquisition.     

Private Companies Hopeful to Bid on Oil Blocks

Based on the recent reports from China＇s news media, China is considering opening oil exploration blocks in its smaller basins to private domestic private companies in what could be the first step toward introducing competition in the country＇s highly regulated upstream energy market. The Ministry of Land and Resources plans to develop a bidding system for exploration rights in small and mid-sized basins over the next five to 10 years. Trial bidding is expected to start in three to five years, the report said, citing Che Changbo, deputy chief of the Oil and Gas Resources Strategic Research Center under the land ministry.

A deep-water port in east China＇s Jiangsu Province recently opened to ships and traffic. The Yangkou Port is built on a man-made island on the Yellow Sea and is connected to the mainland by a 13-kilometer vehicular bridge. So far, only one berth at the port is operational for ships weighing 10,000 tons or less. Once construction on the rest of the project is complete, the port is expected to help handle massive amounts of cargo flowing in the bustling Yangtze River Delta region which sees more than 40 percent of China＇s port transportation volume, according to statistics from the Ministry of Transportation. Based on the port＇s construction plan, it will be able to dock ocean-going ships weighing 300,000 tons by 2013. The port will be able to accommodate heavy cargo such as containers, crude oil, iron ore and LNG, according to the port＇s developer, the Yangkou Port Development and Investment Co., Ltd.     

CNPC to Restructure Its Natural Gas and Pipelines Business

China National Petroleum Corporation （CNPC）, the country＇s largest energy producer, is seeking to combine units to create a single gas company to compete with private rivals, ahead of an inflow of Russian fuel at the end of the decade. According to the plan which is under consideration, CNPC＇s Hong Kong-listed unit Kunlun Energy Co. Ltd. is likely to buy unlisted PetroChina Kunlun Gas Co. Kunlun Energy is CNPC＇s main commercial gas supplier in China, while Kunlun Gas distributes fuel to households in more than 100 Chinese cities.     

CNPC Rises to 52nd in Fortune Top 500

Fortune magazine has sent an official letter to CNPC, stating that its list of the Global 500 Companies has been revised, and that CNPC has been upgraded from the 73rd to the 52nd largest company in the world. Fortune on July 12 released the latest listing of the Global 500 Companies, its well-known ranking of the world's largest companies. On that list, CNPC was ranked 73rd, with revenues of US$47,049 million.
