Fast-Forward Urbanism: Rethinking Architecture's Engagement with the City

Abstract

This article reinterprets the existing literature on environmental technological systems with literature from contemporary urban environmental studies, primarily from the fields of urban geography and urban history. Urban environmental literature offers a historical and spatial understanding of environmental technological systems that emphasizes social, political, and economic structures. In using this literature to reinterpret architectural technological history and theory, three themes are examined—the urban and regional reach of environmental technological systems, the use of environmental technological systems to capture and control space, and the relationship between the beneficiaries of environmental technological systems and larger managerial and governmental spaces.     

Everyday Landmarks of Networked Urbanism: Cellular Antenna Sites and the Infrastructure of Mobile Communication in Philadelphia

Harnessing the utility of mobile communication and the mobile Internet is a common, everyday aspect of the urban condition. The wireless connectivity these pocketable devices are produced through an electromagnetic overlay that emanates from cellular antenna and towers. These sites have a distinct if often overlooked presence in the urban landscape of the United States. Through fieldwork in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this essay examines the aesthetic impact of telecommunications network equipment such as cellular sites as a means of locating these sites as key socio-technical actors in one of the information and telecommunication infrastructures of contemporary, networked urbanism.     

新城市主义与城市公共空间品质

随着城市的发展、汽车时代的来临,城市传统的公共空间及其户外生活走向泯灭,城市公共空间质量急剧下降。该文对这种现象进行了反思,引入上世纪末兴起的新城市主义思潮,解读并阐述了思潮中所提倡的可步行、混合功能等原则对城市公共空间品质的启迪和借鉴意义,并以此为基础,对我国城市公共空间进行了战略思考。     

参数化城市主义——一个理解城市的新的角度

将城市理解成一个生态体系,从景观都市主义的理论与实践出发,阐述了景观都市主义在描述与解读城市化过程、构建城市结构方面的优势所在,提出一个新的更具弹性和适应性的城市发展模式:景观城市,以适应当今乃至未来城市可持续发展研究和实践的需要。     

New Urbanism in the Inner City: A Case Study of Pittsburgh

This article argues that community development efforts can be significantly improved through careful attention to urban design. One potential design application is New Urbanism, which offers promising principles for integrating affordable housing into inner-city neighborhoods. These points are illustrated through a case study of four New Urbanist projects in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Here, New Urbanists have been involved in community-based, inner-city revitalization efforts for more than two decades. This is often overlooked in a critical literature that focuses only on New Urbanist communities in the suburbs. While it is too early to pronounce final, comprehensive judgments on these Pittsburgh projects, they illustrate an important new direction that is worthy of close study by urban planners, community development officials, scholars of urban affairs, and urban designers.

Like the best-selling first edition, this report offers specific design guidance to planners, developers, and others involved in laying out, regulating, and reviewing proposals for “traditional neighborhoods.” For this edition, Arendt revised the model ordinance and subdivision regulations to make them easier to implement. Illustrations on the CD-ROM are directly tied to the provisions of the regulations. The CD-ROM also includes the author's running commentary on the regulations.
