Comparison of friction and lubrication of different hip prostheses   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
It is well documented that an important cause of osteolysis and subsequent loosening of replacement hip joints is polyethylene wear debris. To avoid this, interest has been renewed in metal-on-metal and ceramic-on-ceramic prostheses. Various workers have assessed the lubrication modes of different joints by measuring the friction at the bearing surfaces, using different lubricants. Measurements of friction factors of a series of hip prostheses were undertaken using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) fluids, silicone fluids, synovial fluid and different concentrations of bovine serum as the lubricant. The experimental results were compared with theoretical predictions of film thicknesses and lubrication modes. A strong correlation was observed between experiment and theory when employing CMC fluids or silicone fluids as the lubricant. Mixed lubrication was found to occur in the metal-on-metal (CoCrMo/CoCrMo) joints with all lubricants at a viscosity within the physiological range. This was also the case for the metal-on-plastic (CoCrMo/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) joints. The ceramic-on-ceramic (Al2O3/Al2O3) joints, however, exhibited full fluid film lubrication with the synthetic lubricants but mixed lubrication with the biological lubricants. Employing a biological fluid as the lubricant affected the friction to varying degrees when compared with the synthetic lubricants. In the case of the ceramic-on-ceramic joints it acted to increase the friction factor tenfold; however, for the metal-on-metal joints, biological fluids gave slightly lower friction than the synthetic lubricants did. This suggests that, when measuring friction and wear of artificial joints, a standard lubricant should be used.  相似文献

In this study, osteoarthritic and periprosthetic synovial fluid samples were rheologically and biochemically compared to develop a hyaluronic acid (HA) supplemented bovine serum (BS) lubricant that mimicked the properties of human joint synovial fluid. The effect of this BS + HA lubricant (50 per cent bovine calf serum + 1.5 g/l HA) on the wear rate of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) during a total knee replacement wear test was then investigated. In conjunction with biochemical similarities, the rheological analysis showed that the BS + HA lubricant viscosity was not statistically different to aspirated total knee arthroplasty (TKA) revision joint fluid viscosity over a range of physiologic shear rates. Gravimetric results at 5 million wear testing cycles showed that the BS + HA lubricant produced an average of 6.88 times more UHMWPE wear than 50 per cent bovine serum lubricant alone. The BS + HA lubricated CoCr femoral component surfaces revealed pitting and surface roughening that was not observed using standard bovine serum only lubricants, but that was similar to the metallic surface corrosion observed on in vivo CoCr femoral component retrievals. These findings support the hypothesis that the addition of HA to simulator lubricant is capable of producing CoCr femoral component surface damage similar to that observed in vivo.  相似文献

For appropriate in vitro wear testing of prostheses and their biomaterials, the choice of lubricant is critical. Bovine serum is the lubricant recommended by several international standards for wear testing artificial joints and their biomaterials because the wear rate and wear mechanisms closely match clinical results of polyethylene bearings. The main problem with the use of bovine serum as a lubricant is protein degradation and precipitation formation, effects that are recognized as having a direct impact on wear processes. Hence, some researchers have questioned the validity of using bovine serum in simulator testing. This paper reviews the various lubricants used in laboratory wear studies and also the properties of the synovial fluid that the lubricant is trying to replicate. It is clear from the literature survey that the composition of bovine-serum-based lubricants does not match that of synovial fluid. In view of this conclusion, it is suggested that there is a need to develop an alternative lubricant that can replace bovine serum.  相似文献

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fatigue is a critical factor affecting the longevity of total knee replacement (TKR) bearings. With the increased need for laboratory studies to mimic near in vivo conditions for accurate characterization of material performance, the present study investigated the role of hyaluronic acid (HA) in testing lubricant on the crack growth response of UHMWPE. It was hypothesized that the change in lubricant viscosity as a result of HA would affect the fatigue life of the polymer. A fracture mechanics approach as per ASTM E 647 was adopted for this study. Surface micrograph and surface chemistry analyses were employed to study the micromechanisms of fatigue failure and protein adsorption of the specimen surfaces. Rheological analysis indicated that the addition of HA to diluted bovine serum increased testing lubricant viscosity. HA concentrations of 2.22, 0.55, and 1.5 g/l closely matched the viscosity ranges reported for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritic diseased joint fluid, and periprosthetic fluids respectively. Results showed that the addition of HA to standard diluted bovine serum lubricants, in concentrations similar to that of periprosthetic fluid, delayed crack initiation and crack growth during fatigue testing.  相似文献

Clearance is one of the most influential parameters on the tribological performance of metal-on-metal (MOM) hip joints and its selection is a subject of considerable debate. The objective of this paper is to study the lubrication behaviour of different clearances for MOM hip joints within the range of human physiological and pathological fluid viscosities. The frictional torques developed by MOM hip joints with a 50 mm diameter were measured for both virgin surfaces and during a wear simulator test. Joints were manufactured with three different diametral clearances: 20, 100, and 200 microm. The fluid used for the friction measurements which contained different ratios of 25 percent newborn calf serum and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with the obtained viscosities values ranging from 0.001 to 0.71 Pa s. The obtained results indicate that the frictional torque for the 20 microm clearance joint remains high over the whole range of the viscosity values. The frictional torque of the 100 microm clearance joint was low for the very low viscosity (0.001 Pa s) lubricant, but increased with increasing viscosity value. The frictional torque of the 200 microm clearance joint was high at very low viscosity levels, however, it reduced with increasing viscosity. It is concluded that a smaller clearance level can enhance the formation of an elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film, but this is at the cost of preventing fluid recovery between the bearing surfaces during the unloaded phase of walking. Larger clearance bearings allow a better recovery of lubricant during the unloaded phase, which is necessary for higher viscosity lubricants. The selection of the clearance value should therefore consider both the formation of the EHL film and the fluid recovery as a function of the physiological viscosity in order to get an optimal tribological performance for MOM hip joints. The application of either 25 per cent bovine serum or water in existing in vitro tribological study should also be revised to consider the relevance of clinic synovial fluid viscosities and to avoid possible misleading results.  相似文献

The synovial fluid aspirate from human joints that have experienced serious traumatic injury has been shown to have lower concentrations of phospholipids when compared with healthy joints. Previous studies provide evidence that synovial fluid constituents, specifically dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (L-DPPC), are highly surface active, capable of rapidly depositing a layer of phospholipids onto glass. Such research has demonstrated that the adsorbed surface layers of synovial surfactant are excellent lubricants in vitro, significantly reducing the coefficient of friction under physiological loading in human knee joints. This study aimed to investigate the effect of concentration of L-DPPC lubricant solutions on the coefficient of friction of worn articular cartilage on steel. A pin-on-disc apparatus was used to measure the coefficient of friction of sheep-knee articular cartilage on steel under unidirectional sliding at physiological conditions of load and speed. Concentrations of L-DPPC solution between 100 times less and 100 times more than is normally present in synovial fluid were tested. All specimens were tested following a period of unlubricated induced wear. Trials were carried out at ambient temperature and between 33–37°C (representative of in vivo joint temperature). Friction measurement results demonstrated a reduction in the coefficient of friction of worn articular cartilage against steel with increasing concentrations of L-DPPC in lubricant solution.  相似文献

Calf serum lubricants consisting of various polypeptide constituent fractions are routinely used in knee wear simulators as part of the standardized test protocol. Three calf sera (bovine, new-born and alpha) were diluted as per the recommendation of ISO 14243-3 and used in displacement-controlled knee wear simulators to investigate their effects on polyethylene wear. Biochemical analyses included measuring total polypeptide degradation, electrophoretic profiles and low-molecular weight polypeptide concentrations to elucidate their involvement in the wear process. The effects of the various calf sera constituent fractions on microbial growth were also explored. The polyethylene wear rates and the results from the biochemical analyses for the three calf serum lubricants were all found to be statistically significantly different from each other. The lubricant derived from the alpha-calf serum was closest in constituent fractions to human synovial fluid. It also showed the lowest polyethylene wear rate (14.38 +/- 0.85 mm3/million cycles) and the lowest amount of polypeptide degradation (7.77 +/- 3.87%). Furthermore, the alpha-calf serum lubricant was associated with the least amount of change in the electrophoretic profile, the least change in low-molecular weight polypeptide concentration, and the lowest microbial growth in the presence of sodium azide (a microbial inhibitor conventionally used in implant wear testing). Replacing sodium azide with a broad spectrum antibiotic-antimycotic eradicated the microbial growth. Some speculation was entertained regarding the effect of alpha-calf serum on colloid-mediated boundary lubrication. Based on the results, it was recommended that ISO 14243-3 be modified to include guidelines on calf serum constituent fractions that would favour using alpha-calf serum in order to improve the fidelity of the simulation in knee implant wear testing.  相似文献

It is essential to evaluate the wear behavior of joint replacement materials and designs. While synovial fluid is the biological joint lubricant, it is present in too small quantities to use for wear simulations. A variety of lubricants have been used, such as water, saline solutions, synovial fluid components (hyaluronic acid, lubricin, and phospholipids), serum, and custom-made lubricants. We review studies from our Loma Linda University Medical Center lab and other labs using metal-on-polyethylene, exploring the benefits and deficiencies of these pseudo-synovial fluids. Serum is used extensively as the lubricant because its results most closely match clinical results with polyethylene bearings. We summarize laboratory experiments that have explored the effects of serum with differences in proteins (concentration, type, and ratio), volume, viscosity, temperature, and additives and their wear response. Protein precipitates seem to protect the implants from wear. The properties of current lubricants, in particular the roles of proteins, are the current focus in the search for an ideal joint analogue fluid.

In this work, the most commonly used joint materials for substitution of hip joints, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for the cup, and alumina, stainless steel or CoCrMo alloy for the head, were submitted to pin-on-disk tribological tests. The interfacial behaviour prosthetic material/lubricant was investigated through wettability measurements. Four lubricants were used: Hanks’ balanced salt solution (HBSS) and solutions of bovine serum albumin (BSA), of hyaluronic acid (HA) and of both components (BSA + HA) in HBSS. It was observed that the friction coefficient increased significantly with time, in a random way, when the lubricant did not contain albumin. The addition of HA induced a slight reduction in the initial value of the friction coefficient but did not affect qualitatively its behaviour for longer times. Observation of the worn metallic surfaces revealed parallel grooves typical of abrasive wear and also lumpy transfer film of UHMWPE, while the transfer of polymer to alumina was incipient. Wear was particularly intense on the steel surface where delamination and fatigue wear mechanisms were also found. In the presence of albumin, the friction coefficient remained constant and small for the metallic surfaces and increased in the case of alumina. The observation of the worn surfaces showed that the presence of albumin in the lubricant avoided the transfer of polymer for the metallic surfaces but not for the alumina surfaces. These results, together with the wettability measurements, strongly indicate that the presence of albumin in the lubricant avoids the adhesion and transfer of UHMWPE only for the least hydrophilic surfaces, which are the metallic ones.  相似文献

人工关节的摩擦磨损问题仍然是基础研究中最重要的问题,借助表面改性技术改善假体的摩擦学性能是人工关节未来发展的必经之路。从润滑角度考虑,对假体关节材料摩擦性能的研究主要集中在表面功能化润滑结构设计以及新型仿生润滑剂研究两方面。针对功能化润滑结构,介绍表面织构设计以及聚合物刷的应用,分析表面织构参数对不同运动工况下摩擦副摩擦性能的影响,阐述表面织构的润滑机制;总结不同种类的聚合物刷结构对摩擦体系耐磨性能的调控,阐明"刷型"结构在摩擦界面的水润滑特点,提出环境介质对聚合物刷结构及性质的影响作用。针对关节润滑剂,介绍传统的关节滑液组分向聚合物仿生润滑剂的拓展。指出微/纳结构的嵌套设计与协同润滑以及润滑剂结构仿生与功能仿生的结合,将是未来的重要发展方向。  相似文献

Two tests for evaluating continuously variable transmission (CVT) lubricants have been developed using readily available test equipment and test parts. These tests have been designed to rank lubricants using a number of criteria relevant to the performance of the lubricant in a push-belt variator. These include overall level of friction, friction stability, temperature dependence of friction, and load dependence of friction. Testing lubricants of different types has shown the effect of lubricant chemistry on the parameters measured and indicates that some existing fluids, a CVT fluid and passenger car motor oil, as well as an experimental fluid, should give good performance in a continuously variable transmission using a push-belt variator.  相似文献

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear debris induced osteolysis has a major role in the late aseptic loosening and ultimate failure of total hip replacements (THR). Clinically relevant in vitro simulations of wear are essential to predict the osteolytic potential of bearing surfaces in artificial hip joints. Newborn calf or bovine serum has been accepted as a boundary lubricant for such in vitro tests, but its biological stability has been questioned. This study compared the wear factors, number of wear particles and levels of microbial contamination produced in bovine serum and a gelatin-based lubricant. The wear factors produced by the two lubricants were not significantly different, however the wear debris morphology produced was substantially different. The bovine serum became contaminated with micro-organisms within 28 h, whereas the protein-based lubricant remained uncontaminated. The results showed that bovine serum was not a stable boundary lubricant. They also showed that although the wear factors for the two solutions were not significantly different, the protein-based lubricant was not a suitable alternative to bovine serum because the wear debris produced was not clinically relevant.  相似文献

Evidence is reviewed for the concept that the body employs essentially the same lubrication system in many sites in the body where tissues slide over each other with such ease. This system consists of fluid adjacent to surfaces coated with an oligolamellar lining of surface-active phospholipid (SAPL) acting as a back-up boundary lubricant wherever the fluid film fails to support the load--a likely event at physiological velocities. Particular attention is paid to the load-bearing joints, where the issue of identifying the vital active ingredient in synovial fluid is reviewed, coming down--perhaps predictably--in favour of SAPL. It is also explained how Lubricin and hyaluronic acid (HA) could have 'carrier' functions for the highly insoluble SAPL, while HA has good wetting properties needed to promote hydrodynamic lubrication of a very hydrophobic articular surface by an aqueous fluid wherever the load permits. In addition to friction and wear, release is included as another major role of boundary lubricants, especially relevant in environments where proteins are found, many having adhesive properties. The discussion is extended to a mention of the lubrication of prosthetic implants and to disease states where a deficiency of boundary lubricant is implicated, particular attention being paid to osteoarthritis.  相似文献

There is considerable interest in the wear of polyethylene and the resulting wear-debris-induced osteolysis in artificial hip joints. Proteins play an important role as boundary lubricants in vivo in the pseudosynovial fluid, and these are reproduced in in vitro tests through the use of bovine serum. Little is known, however, about the effect of phospholipid concentrations within proteinaceous solutions on the wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The effects of protein-containing lubricants with 0.05, 0.5 and 5 per cent (w/v) phosphatidyl choline concentrations on the wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were compared with 25 per cent (v/v) bovine serum which had 0.01 per cent (w/v) lipid; the effects were compared in a hip joint simulator with smooth (n = 4) and scratched (n = 3) femoral heads. The control bovine serum lubricant produced UHWMPE wear of 55 and 115 mm3/10(6) cycles on the smooth and rough heads respectively. The increased phospholipid concentration significantly reduced the wear rate. At the higher concentration (5% w/v phosphatidyl choline) the average wear was reduced to less than 2 mm3/10(6) cycles. Even with the relatively low concentrations of 0.05% w/v phosphatidyl choline the wear was reduced by at least threefold compared with the bovine serum tests for both the smooth and rough femoral heads. There may be considerable differences in the phospholipid concentrations in patients' synovial fluid and this is highly likely to produce considerable variation in wear rates. In vitro, differences in the phospholipid concentration of lubricants may also cause variation in wear rates between different simulator tests.  相似文献

In this study, a twin-disc test machine was used to simulate a rolling/sliding gear contact for three surface finishes, each run with two types of lubricants, thus seeking to develop insight into the tooth flank/lubricant tribological system. The test disc surfaces were case-carburised before the surfaces were produced by: transverse grinding followed by a mechanical abrasive polishing process; transverse grinding only; and transverse grinding followed by preheating as a final finishing step (intended to enhance the build-up of an easily sheared surface boundary layer using a sulphur additive). The twin-disc contact was lubricated with an ester-based environmentally adapted lubricant or a polyalphaolefin-based commercial heavy truck gearbox lubricant. To obtain information about the composition of chemically reacted surface layers, the specimens used were analysed using glow discharge-optical emission spectroscopy. The results indicate that the interactions between different surface finishes and lubricants have different impacts on friction behaviour, wear and the reacted surface boundary layer formed by the lubricant. Running a smooth (polished) surface with the appropriate lubricant drastically reduces the friction. Surface analysis of the ground surfaces gives clear differences in lubricant characteristics. The commercial lubricant does not seem to react chemically with the surface to the same extent as the EAL does. Micropitting was found on all ground discs with both lubricants, though at different rates. The highest amount of wear but less surface damage (i.e. micropits) was found on the preheated surface run with the commercial lubricant.  相似文献

Using a pin-on-disc testing machine, the authors investigated the start up and steady state friction of highly polished alumina against itself and studied the factors affecting the friction. The lubricants used in this paper were 1 wt.% water solution of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC-Na 1 wt.% water solution) and distilled water. It is observed that many factors, such as lubricants, load, sliding velocity, resting time and start up acceleration etc., have an influence on the friction of alumina.against alumina. The experimental results indicate that the coefficients of the start up and steady state friction when CMC-Na 1 wt.% water solution is the lubricant are much smaller than when distilled water us used, and it is possible that alumina-on-alumina hip joints may enjoy full fluid film lubrication with good machining, good fit and a proper lubricant.  相似文献

Many researchers have tried to improve the tribological characteristics of lubricants to decrease friction coefficients and wear rates. One approach is simply the use of additives in the base lubricant to change its properties. Recently, nanoparticles have emerged as a new kind of additive because of their size, shape and other properties. A nano lubricant is a new kind of engineering lubricant made of nanoparticles, dispersant, and base lubricant. In this study, graphite nanoparticles were used to fabricate nano lubricants with enhanced tribological properties and lubrication characteristics. The base lubricant used was industrial gear oil, which has a kinematic viscosity of 220 cSt at 40°C. To investigate the physical and tribological properties of nano lubricants, friction coefficients and temperatures were measured by a disk-on-disk tribotester. The surfaces of the fixed plates were observed by a scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope to analyze the characteristics of the friction surfaces. The results show that when comparing fixed plates coated with raw and nano lubricants, the plate coated with a nano lubricant containing graphite nanoparticles had a lower friction coefficient and less wear. These results indicate that graphite nanoparticle additives improve the lubrication properties of regular lubricants.  相似文献

Latex versus glass has frequently been used as a model system for the investigation of natural lubrication mechanisms, despite its significant differences from articular cartilage pairings. The differences in surface chemistry account for its different behavior in terms of protein adsorption and lubrication. While cartilage is well known for its protein resistance, most proteins present in synovial fluid can non-specifically adsorb onto latex or glass. We have investigated latex-versus-glass lubrication by means of pin-on-disk tribometry in the presence of synovial-fluid proteins and glycoproteins, focusing on the influence of the glass-cleaning procedure on friction. In order to simulate the effects of possible contamination of glass in previous studies, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic glass substrates were tested. Albumin was shown to impair lubrication (in comparison to PBS) when latex was slid against both types of glass surface, whereas bovine synovial fluid (BSF) and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) impaired the lubrication of latex versus hydrophilic glass and improved the lubrication of latex versus hydrophobic glass. Protein adsorption on the surfaces was monitored by means of fluorescence imaging and optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS), which revealed a faster and greater amount of adsorption of AGP on hydrophobic surfaces than on hydrophilic ones. The influence of surface chemistry on the friction behavior of BSF and on the adsorption of AGP suggests that it plays a role in determining the relative amounts of adsorbed synovial fluid proteins. When BSF is used as a lubricant in the latex-versus-hydrophobic-glass system, more of the AGP, relative to albumin, appears to adsorb on both surfaces, counteracting the negative effect of albumin on friction. It therefore seems that latex on glass, while displaying nominal similarities to cartilage on cartilage under certain conditions, is not a useful model system. Moreover, surface contamination of the glass can play a major role in determining the results.  相似文献

Lubrication is critical for minimizing wear in mechanical systems that operate for extended time periods. Developing lubricants that can be used in engineering systems without replenishment – particularly those that are environmentally friendly – is very important for increasing the functional lifetime of mechanical components. In the present investigation, extended duration pin-on-disk experiments were carried out to determine the relative performance of a wide range of lubricant combinations in a commercial brake valve assembly. In the experiments, the lubricants were initially applied to the disk surface but were not replenished over a sliding distance of more than 6000 m. The experimental results revealed that the environmentally friendly lubricant boric acid was highly ineffective for reducing the wear in the surfaces tested. When combined with a commercial transmission fluid, however, the boric acid mixture proved to be highly effective in terms of both friction and wear performance. Based on the success of the combined lubricant experiments, the boric acid was then mixed with canola oil to form a completely natural lubricant combination. Based on further pin-on-disk experiments, this lubricant combination yielded the best wear performance of all the lubricants tested. The importance of these results, as related to the use of the natural lubricant combination in other engineering systems such as sheet metal stamping, was subsequently ascertained and discussed.  相似文献

Wear of total knee replacements is determined gravimetrically in simulator studies. A mix of bovine serum, distilled water, and additives is intended to replicate the lubrication conditions in vivo. Weight gain due to fluid absorption during testing is corrected using a load soak station. In this study, three sets of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene tibial plateau were tested against highly polished titanium condyles. Test 1 was performed in two different institutions on the same simulator according to the standard ISO 14243-1, using two testing lubricants. Test 2 and test 3 repeated both previous test sections. The wear and load soak rates changed significantly with the lubricant. The wear rate decreased from 16.9 to 7.9 mg weight loss per million cycles when switching from fluid A to fluid B. The weight gain of the load soak specimen submersed in fluid A was 6.1 mg after 5 x 10(6) cycles, compared with 31.6 mg for the implant in fluid B after the same time period. Both lubricants were mixed in accordance with ISO 14243 (Implants for surgery - wear of total knee-joint prostheses), suggesting that calf serum should be diluted to 25 +/- 2 per cent with deionized water and a protein mass concentration of not less than 17 g/l. The main differences were the type and amount of additives that chemically stabilize the lubricant throughout the test. The results suggest that wear rates can only be compared if exactly the same testing conditions are applied. An agreement on detailed lubricant specifications is desirable.  相似文献
