The melting behavior of poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐diethylene terephthalate) and poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐triethylene terephthalate) copolymers was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry after isothermal crystallization from the melt. Multiple endotherms were found for all the samples, and attributed to the melting and recrystallization processes. By applying the Hoffman‐Weeks' method, the equilibrium melting temperatures of the copolymers under investigation were obtained. Two distinct peaks in the crystallization exothermic curve were observed for all the samples. Both of them appeared at higher times than that of PBT, indicating that the introduction of a comonomer decreased the crystallization rate. The observed dependence of this latter on composition was explained on the basis of the content of ether–oxygen atoms in diethylene and triethylene terephthalate units, and of the different sizes of these units. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The randomly branched poly(ethylene terephthalate) (BPET) was prepared by bulk polycondensation from dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and ethylene glycol (EG), with 0.4–5.0 mol % (with respect to DMT) of glycerol (GL) as a branching agent. The glass transition and crystallization behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the glass transition temperature of BPET reduced with the increasing content of GL until 1.2 mol %, and then increases a little at high degrees of branching. When compared with a linear PET, the crystallization temperature of BPET from the melt shifted to higher temperature as GL content was smaller than 1.2 mol %, and then became lower while GL load was added. Nonisothermal crystallization kinetics was studied through the modified Avrami analysis. It was revealed that the overall crystallization rate parameter of BPET became larger when the GL content was less than 1.2 mol %, then turned to lower at higher branching degree. This indicated that low degree of branching could enhance the overall crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), whereas high degree of branching in the range of 3.5–5.0 mol % would block the development of crystallization. On the basis of Hoffman's secondary crystallization theory, the product σσe of the free energy of formation per unit area of the lateral and folding surface was calculated. According to the change of the product σσe with the degree of branching, a possible explanation was presented to illuminate this diverse effect of different degrees of branching on crystallization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melting, crystallization behaviors, and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of the ternary blends composed of poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) and poly(buthylene terephthalate) (PBT) were studied with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). PBT content in all ternary blends was settled invariably to be one‐third, which improved the melt‐crystallization temperature of the ternary blends. All of the blend compositions in amorphous state were miscible as evidenced by a single, composition‐dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) observed in DSC curves. DSC melting thermograms of different blends showed different multiple melting and crystallization peaks because of their various polymer contents. During melt‐crystallization process, three components in blends crystallized simultaneously to form mixed crystals or separated crystals depending upon their content ratio. The Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny and the Ozawa theory were employed to describe the nonisothermal crystallization process of two selected ternary blends. The results spoke that the Avrami equation was successful in describing the nonisothermal crystallization process of the ternary blends. The values of the t1/2 and the parameters Zc showed that the crystallization rate of the ternary blends with more poly(ethylene terephthalate) content was faster than that with the lesser one at a given cooling rate. The crystal morphology of the five ternary blends investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) showed different size and distortional Maltese crosses or light spots when the PTT or poly(ethylene terephthalate) component varied, suggesting that the more the PTT content, the larger crystallites formed in ternary blends. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization kinetics of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and their copolymers poly(1,4‐butylene‐co‐ethylene terephthalate) (PBET) containing 70/30, 65/35 and 60/40 molar ratios of 1,4‐butanediol/ethylene glycol were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at crystallization temperatures (Tc) which were 35–90 °C below equilibrium melting temperature . Although these copolymers contain both monomers in high proportion, DSC data revealed for copolymer crystallization behaviour. The reason for such copolymers being able to crystallize could be due to the similar chemical structures of 1,4‐butanediol and ethylene glycol. DSC results for isothermal crystallization revealed that random copolymers had a lower degree of crystallinity and lower crystallite growth rate than those of homopolymers. DSC heating scans, after completion of isothermal crystallization, showed triple melting endotherms for all these polyesters, similar to those of other polymers as reported in the literature. The crystallization isotherms followed the Avrami equation with an exponent n of 2–2.5 for PET and 2.5–3.0 for PBT and PBETs. Analyses of the Lauritzen–Hoffman equation for DSC isothermal crystallization data revealed that PBT and PET had higher growth rate constant Go, and nucleation constant Kg than those of PBET copolymers. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The phase behavior of blends of semicrystalline aryl polyesters with long methylene segments (? (CH2)n? with n = 5 or 7) in the repeat units has not been much studied. Thus, crystalline/crystalline blends comprising monomorphic poly(pentamethylene terephthalate) (PPT) and polymorphic poly(heptamethylene terephthalate) (PHepT) were prepared and the crystal growth kinetics, polymorphism behavior and miscibility in this blend system were probed using polarized‐light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. RESULTS: The PPT/PHepT blends of all compositions were first proven to be miscible in the melt state or quenched amorphous phase, whose interaction strength was determined (χ12 = ? 0.35), showing favorable interactions and phase homogeneity. Although the spherulites of neat PPT and PHepT could exhibit ring bands at different crystallization temperature (Tc) ranges (100–110 and 50–65 °C, respectively), the spherulites of PPT/PHepT (50/50) blend became ringless in the range 50–110 °C. Growth analysis and polymorphic behavior in the crystalline phases of the blends provided extra evidence for the miscibility between these two crystalline polymers. Spherulitic growth rates of PPT in the PPT/PHepT blends were significantly reduced in comparison with those of neat PPT. In addition, miscible blending of a small fraction of monomorphic PPT (20 wt%) with polymorphic PHepT altered the crystal stability and led to the originally polymorphic PHepT exhibiting only the β‐crystal form when melt‐crystallized at all values of Tc. CONCLUSION: The highly intimate mixing in polymer chains of crystalline PPT and PHepT causes significant disruption in ring‐band patterns and reduction in crystallization rates of PPT as well as alteration in the polymorphic behavior of PHepT. The melting and crystallization behavior and phase morphology of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(DL-lactide)-co-poly(ethylene glycol) (PELA) blends were studied by DSC, SEM, and polarizing optical microscopy. The melting temperatures of PHB in the blends showed a slight shift, and the melting enthalpy of the blends decreased linearly with the increase of PELA content. The glass transition temperatures of PHB/PELA (60/40), (40/60), and (20/80) blends were found at about 30°C, close to that of the pure PELA component, during DSC heating runs for the original samples and samples after cooling from the melt at a rate of 20°C/min. After a DSC cooling run at a rate of 100°C/min, the blends showed glass transitions in the range of 10–30°C. Uniform distribution of two phases in the blends was observed by SEM. The crystallization of PHB in the blends from both the melt and the glassy state was affected by the PELA component. When crystallized from the melt during the DSC nonisothermal crystallization run at a rate of 20°C/min, the temperatures of crystallization decreased with the increase of PELA content. Compared with pure PHB, the cold crystallization peaks of PHB in the blends shifted to higher temperatures. Well-defined spherulites of PHB were found in both pure PHB and the blends with PHB content of 80 or 60%. The growth of spherulites of PHB in the blends was affected significantly by 60% PELA content. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 65: 1849–1856, 1997  相似文献

The crystallization behavior and morphology of poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) blends containing carbon black (CB) were studied as functions of PVB and CB content. The presence of CB had no influence on the primary nucleation of PCL crystals or the spherulitic growth rate. They were only influenced by the blend ratio of PVB. The growth rates of spherulites were unchanged throughout the crystallization process, regardless of the CB content. The results indicate that the concentration of PCL at the front of growing spherulite remains constant during crystallization. The distribution of CB in the spherulites was observed using atomic force microscopy to explain these results. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 64: 797–802, 1997  相似文献

Thermal properties and non‐isothermal melt‐crystallization behavior of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The blends exhibit single and composition‐dependent glass transition temperature, cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) and melt crystallization peak temperature (Tmc) over the entire composition range, implying miscibility between the PLA and PTT components. The Tcc values of PTT/PLA blends increase, while the Tmc values decrease with increasing PLA content, suggesting that the cold crystallization and melt crystallization of PTT are retarded by the addition of PLA. The modified Avrami model is satisfactory in describing the non‐isothermal melt crystallization of the blends, whereas the Ozawa method is not applicable to the blends. The estimated Avrami exponent of the PTT/PLA blends ranges from 3.25 to 4.11, implying that the non‐isothermal crystallization follows a spherulitic‐like crystal growth combined with a complicated growth form. The PTT/PLA blends generally exhibit inferior crystallization rate and superior activation energy compared to pure PTT at the same cooling rate. The greater the PLA content in the PTT/PLA blends, the lower the crystallization rate and the higher the activation energy. Moreover, the introduction of PTT into PLA leads to an increase in the thermal stability behavior of the resulting PTT/PLA blends. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Double crystalline poly(trimethylene terephthalate)/poly(ethylene oxide terephthalate) copolymers (PTT/PEOT), with PTT content ranging from 16.5 to 65.5 wt%, were synthesized by melt copolycondensation. The morphological transformation of samples from microphase separation to macrophase separation was investigated by gel permeation chromatography and transmission electron microscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and in situ wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction suggested that all copolycondensation samples displayed double crystalline behavior. The melt‐crystallization peak temperatures (Tm, c values) of PTT chains monotonously increased with increasing PTT content and were higher than that of homo‐PTT when the content of PTT was above 30.6 wt%. Interestingly, Tm, c values of PEOT chains were also increased with increasing PTT content. Polarized optical microscopy revealed that all copolycondensation samples studied could form ring‐banded spherulites and band spacing increased with increasing Tc values. In addition, band spacing decreased with increasing PTT content at a given Tc. Strangely, although PEOT was the main component in all copolycondensation samples, spherulitic morphology formed by the advance crystallization of PTT did not change after PEOT crystallization. Only a subtle change of quadrant tones was detected. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(butylene terephthalate), poly(butylene azelate), and poly(butylene terephthalate/butylene azelate) random copolymers of various compositions were synthesized in bulk using the well‐known two‐stage polycondensation procedure, and characterized in terms of chemical structure and molecular weight. The thermal behavior was examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. As far as the thermal stability is concerned, it was found to be rather similar for all copolymers and homopolymers investigated. All the copolymers were found to be partially crystalline, and the main effect of copolymerization was a lowering in the amount of crystallinity and a decrease of melting temperature with respect to pure homopolymers. Flory's equation was found to describe the Tm–composition data and permitted to calculate the melting temperatures (T°m ) and the heats of fusion (ΔHu) of both the completely crystalline homopolymers. Owing to the high crystallization rate, the glass transition was observable only for the copolymers containing from 30 to 70 mol % of the terephthalate units; even though the samples cannot be frozen in a completely amorphous state, the data obtained confirmed that the introduction of the aromatic units gave rise to an increase of Tg, due to a chain stiffening.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and end‐capped poly(ethylene glycol) (poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME)) of number average molecular weight 1000 g mol?1 was melt blended with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) oligomer. NMR, DSC and WAXS techniques characterized the structure and morphology of the blends. Both these samples show reduction in Tg and similar crystallization behavior. Solid‐state polymerization (SSP) was performed on these blend samples using Sb2O3 as catalyst under reduced pressure at temperatures below the melting point of the samples. Inherent viscosity data indicate that for the blend sample with PEG there is enhancement of SSP rate, while for the sample with PEGDME the SSP rate is suppressed. NMR data showed that PEG is incorporated into the PET chain, while PEGDME does not react with PET. Copyright © 2005 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) properties of poly(lactic acid)/ poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) specimens suggest that only small amounts of poor PLA and/or PBAT crystals are present in their corresponding melt crystallized specimens. In fact, the percentage crystallinity, peak melting temperature and onset re‐crystallization temperature values of PLA/PBAT specimens reduce gradually as their PBAT contents increase. However, the glass transition temperatures of PLA molecules found by DSC and DMA analysis reduce to the minimum value as the PBAT contents of PLAxPBATy specimens reach 2.5 wt %. Further morphological and DMA analysis of PLA/PBAT specimens reveal that PBAT molecules are miscible with PLA molecules at PBAT contents equal to or less than 2.5 wt %, since no distinguished phase‐separated PBAT droplets and tan δ transitions were found on fracture surfaces and tan δ curves of PLA/PBAT specimens, respectively. In contrast to PLA, the PBAT specimen exhibits highly deformable properties. After blending proper amounts of PBAT in PLA, the inherent brittle deformation behavior of PLA was successfully improved. Possible reasons accounting for these interesting crystallization, compatible and tensile properties of PLA/PBAT specimens are proposed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The equilibrium thermodynamic properties and crystallization behavior of poly(p-phenylene succinate) (PPSc) were examined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a wide-angle X-ray diffractometer. When PPSc quenched into liquid nitrogen, the PPSc still showed 60 J/g of the heat of fusion, indicating that PPSc crystallizes too fast to be quenched to a glassy state. The equilibrium heat of fusion (ΔH°) of PPSc and its equilibrium entropy of fusion (ΔS°) were estimated to be 28 and 48 J/mol K, respectively. The effect of the molecular weight and undercooling on PPSc crystallization was analyzed by the Avrami expression. The crystallization rate of PPSc was highest at about 276°C, regardless of molecular weight when the sample was isothermally crystallized. This temperature was higher than that of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) by 100°C. The crystallization rate was highest when the number average molecular weight of PPSc was about 20,000 g/mol. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 73: 801–806, 1999  相似文献

The effect of self‐nucleation on the nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization behaviors of the segmented copolymer poly(ether ester), based on poly(ethylene glycol) as the soft segment and poly(ethylene terephthalate) as the hard segment was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and depolarization polarized light (DPL) techniques, respectively. The results demonstrated that self‐nucleation could enhance the crystallization rate in both cases. The experimental conditions of the self‐nucleation procedure studied by DSC were discussed in detail. The isothermal crystallization was analyzed by the Avrami equation, and the Avrami parameters were dependent on the melting temperature. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this exploration of novel biodegradable polyesters, multiblock copolymers based on poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(1,2‐propylene terephthalate) (PPT) were successfully synthesized with hexamethylene diisocyanate as a chain extender. The amorphous and rigid PPT segment was chosen to modify PBS. The structures of the polymers were characterized using 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction; the physical properties were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, mechanical testing and enzymatic degradation. The results indicate that the copolymers possess satisfactory mechanical and thermal properties, with impact strength 186% higher than that of PBS homopolymer, while tensile strength, flexural strength, thermal stability and melting point (Tm) are slightly decreased. Crystallization and biodegradation rates are still acceptable at 5 wt% PPT, although they are decreased by the introduction of PPT. The addition of appropriate amounts of PPT can improve the impact strength effectively without an obviously deleterious effect on tensile strength, flexural strength, thermal stability, Tm, crystallization rate and biodegradability. This study describes a convenient route to novel multiblock copolymers comprising crystallizable aliphatic and amorphous aromatic polyesters, which are promising for commercialization as biodegradable materials.
