A new microfabrication technology based on bulk anisotropic etching is presented that offers significant improvements over present microoptical and microphotonic devices. With this new technology we have fabricated 200 /spl mu/m to 2 cm translational stages, fiber-to-fiber couplers, and fiber-to-planar waveguide couplers. In this letter we present the fabrication and characterization of a 1/spl times/n micromechanical fiber-optical switch. The nonoptimized devices show switching times <10 ms with <-1-dB loss. Significant improvements in both parameters appear possible with future refinements. The devices are simple to fabricate, compact, and show considerable promise in the future of fiber-optic networks. Actuation of the switch is accomplished magnetically although other actuation mechanisms are also possible.  相似文献

A thermooptic 2/spl times/2 switch based on the total internal reflection effect is demonstrated. The device, made of ultraviolet curable fluorinated polymer, has an increased half-branch angle of 5/spl deg/. The purpose of a large half-branch angle is to overcome the volume relaxation phenomenon, which is an intrinsic characteristic of polymers. The device successfully decreases the crosstalk below -40 dB in both the cross and bar states. The fabricated device has a power consumption of only 66 mW in the bar state.  相似文献

We demonstrate a simple, compact, high-contrast ratio, and low-loss polarization-insensitive InGaAsP-InP 2 /spl times/ 2 optical switch with an operational wavelength range from 1520 to 1580 nm. The switch is 1.3 mm long by 160 /spl mu/m wide. The on-off contrast ratio is within (21/spl plusmn/2) dB over the temperature range from 16/spl deg/C to 64/spl deg/C, the polarization sensitivity is <2 dB, and the propagation loss is (3/spl plusmn/2) dB in both the ON and OFF states, making it potentially useful for optical cross-connects, delay lines, and add-drop multiplexers.  相似文献

We report the development of a polarization insensitive all fiber 2/spl times/2 acoustooptic switch based on twisting the waist of a null taper coupler. The polarization insensitivity is better than 0.2 dB, the device requires a drive power of <1 mW, and exhibits a switching time of <50 /spl mu/s and insertion loss of 0.1 dB.  相似文献

We describe the design, fabrication, and testing of two packaged electrooptic switches built from poled LiTaO/sub 3/ crystals. The 1/spl times/2 switch requires a driving voltage of 1200 V and exhibits insertion loss of 2.4 dB and crosstalk of -39.2 dB; the 1/spl times/4 switch exhibits insertion loss and crosstalk of 2.8 dB and -40.6 dB, respectively, and operates using a 1100-V voltage source. The maximum deflection time between the channels is 86 ns.  相似文献

This paper reports the expansion of a novel optical multicast scheme to 1-to-4 and 2-to-4 configurations using an active-vertical-coupler (AVC)-based optical crosspoint switch (OXS) matrix. A 1-to-4 broadcast experiment has been carried out first, with only 0.5 dB excess loss per signal split. Input signals with two wavelengths are then fed into one row of OXS to investigate the effect of wavelength-division multiplexing on the 1-to-4 multicast switching. Finally, combining both, the expanded 2-to-N multicast is also achieved with an N value up to 4. The switching characteristics, switched signal quality, and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) have been investigated in different configurations. Power penalties of less than 4.5 dB are found in worst case switched signals in the 2-to-4 configuration. Slow OSNR degradation in line with previous prediction is also observed. The measured results confirm the excellent multicast switching characteristics nearly free from power splitting loss in this device.  相似文献

In this paper, new three-dimensional (3-D) radix-(2/spl times/2/spl times/2)/(4/spl times/4/spl times/4) and radix-(2/spl times/2/spl times/2)/(8/spl times/8/spl times/8) decimation-in-frequency (DIF) fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms are developed and their implementation schemes discussed. The algorithms are developed by introducing the radix-2/4 and radix-2/8 approaches in the computation of the 3-D DFT using the Kronecker product and appropriate index mappings. The butterflies of the proposed algorithms are characterized by simple closed-form expressions facilitating easy software or hardware implementations of the algorithms. Comparisons between the proposed algorithms and the existing 3-D radix-(2/spl times/2/spl times/2) FFT algorithm are carried out showing that significant savings in terms of the number of arithmetic operations, data transfers, and twiddle factor evaluations or accesses to the lookup table can be achieved using the radix-(2/spl times/2/spl times/2)/(4/spl times/4/spl times/4) DIF FFT algorithm over the radix-(2/spl times/2/spl times/2) FFT algorithm. It is also established that further savings can be achieved by using the radix-(2/spl times/2/spl times/2)/(8/spl times/8/spl times/8) DIF FFT algorithm.  相似文献

An all-fiber acoustooptic switch has been constructed from a 3/spl times/3 null fused coupler. The maximum drive power required is 4 mW, the switching time is 100 /spl mu/s and the insertion loss is less than 0.5 dB and has a cross talk of 20 dB. The switch shares the advantages of an earlier 2/spl times/2 switch but with more fiber ports, and should permit the design of compound routing arrays with fewer switching elements per channel.  相似文献

We propose and demonstrate a 1/spl times/2 thermooptic digital optical switch with variable optical attenuators that are integrated with the S-bend waveguides connecting the output of the Y-switch with a standard fiber array. With a total heating power of 140 mW applied to the switch, we have achieved less than -42-dB optical crosstalk. The wavelength response of the switch is flat across the entire C-band. The average polarization-dependent loss of the switch is about 0.49 dB.  相似文献

A reconfigurable 2 /spl times/ 2 add-drop fiber-optic switch structure is proposed by incorporating the independent mechanical control and alignment of an off-the-shelf thin-film filter with a reflective optical element. Cascading several 2 /spl times/ 2 add-drop switches gives a low-cost polarization-independent wavelength routing system with the limitation in optical loss that can be compensated by using optical amplifiers. The experimental result indicates a measured average optical loss of <1.30 dB at the center wavelength. In addition, the measured optical coherent crosstalk values at the center wavelength are -15 and -22 dB when the thin-film filter and the mirror are in the optical path, respectively. A very low polarization-dependent loss of <0.07 dB is also investigated.  相似文献

A low-power 2/spl times/2 switch IC using InP HEMTs as cold FETs is presented. It has a logic-level-independent interface since no signal line is grounded. The IC yields low insertion loss of 1.5-2.7 dB and high isolation of >21.2 dB below 30 GHz. When two 40 Gbit/s signals were input, error-free operation was confirmed with virtually zero power dissipation.  相似文献

A new method for the fabrication of a singlemode fibre wavelength independent Y-junction is described; through asymmetrically tapering a pre-assembled Y-junction precursor, the splice point is drawn into the waist region of the device and low-loss is ensured. A polymeric 1 /spl times/ 6 thermooptic switch is fabricated and demonstrated. The device utilizes an elliptic total internal reflection waveguide mirror imaging the input channel waveguide onto the first output channel waveguide and a prism-array heating electrode steering the beam to corresponding output channel waveguides. At 1310 nm, 1 /spl times/ 6 switching was demonstrated; the extinction ratios and crosstalks were found to be >20 and -20 dB, respectively. Switching time as low as 4 ms was observed. The device offers the advantage of a single-electrode driving scheme for 1/spl times/N(N>2) switching.  相似文献

2/spl times/2 electrooptic switches consisting of a pair of asymmetric Y junctions and Mach-Zehnder interferometer have been demonstrated in polymeric waveguides. The switching voltage is 15 V with 1.5 cm long electrode for TM polarized light at 1.3 /spl mu/m. When the branching angle of the asymmetric Y junction is 0.2/spl deg/, crosstalk of -27 to -22 dB are obtained for both input arms. The measured insertion loss by the lens coupling is about 9-10 dB.  相似文献

This paper presents a wideband cold-FET switch with virtually zero power dissipation. The use of InP HEMTs with a low R/sub on//spl middot/C/sub off/ product enables us to configure a DC-to-over-10-GHz single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch without using a shunt FET. The series-FET configuration offers a logic-level-independent interface and makes possible positive control voltage operation in spite of using depletion-mode FETs. A miniaturized 2/spl times/2 switch using two SPDT switches yields an insertion loss of less than 1.16 dB and isolation of more than 21.2 dB below 10 GHz, which allows us to increase the scale of the switch in a single chip easily. The add-drop operation combining two 2/spl times/2 switches in a single chip and a 4/spl times/4 switch IC integrating four 2/spl times/2 switches are presented. The packaged ICs achieve error-free operation up to 12.5 Gb/s with either positive or negative logic-level input. Extremely fast switching of /spl sim/140 ps is also successfully demonstrated.  相似文献

Optical recording demands a meticulous write strategy to control the laser beam power and regulate the phase change layer temperature tightly. The width, height, and delay of a string of short pulses applied to the laser diode need to be adjusted in fine steps, and the writing speed varies widely per applications. A multi-phase phase-locked loop (PLL) tracks a wide range of clock frequencies, and provides a low-jitter time base for write pulses. With two enabling circuit concepts, PLL loop filter voltage folding/unfolding and switch-in of parallel MOS resistors in delay cells, it is possible to operate a PLL to cover a frequency range spanning over three octaves with one VCO. A 10-stage differential VCO is phase-locked to the input channel clock ranging from 26 to 420 MHz (1/spl times/-16/spl times/ DVD speed), and its 20-phase outputs are used to generate write pulses. The pulsewidth and delay are programmed with 120 /spl plusmn/ 40 ps time resolution. The prototype chip fabricated in 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS occupies 3.5/spl times/3.3 mm/sup 2/, and consumes 294 mW at 3.3 V.  相似文献

We report an 8/spl times/8 strictly nonblocking optical cross connect (OXC) using multimode imaging (MMI)-based generalized Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometers realized in the silica-on-silicon planar waveguide system. Employing a router-selector architecture, this MMI-MZ OXC design results in a significantly smaller device than conventional directional-coupler based implementations. An average insertion loss of 6 dB and crosstalk of -34 dB, is demonstrated for the 8/spl times/8 OXC.  相似文献

An optical switch based on a transversal filter configuration is demonstrated. The switch consists of cascaded 3 dB optical power splitters and a phase shifter array. By using a silica-based planar lightwave circuit, a 1/spl times/4 optical switch was realised. Through a metal option, a 256K word/spl times/1-bit and a 64K word/spl times/4-bit CMOS SRAM organization has been obtained. A fast access time has been achieved with a short bit-line structure and a data-bus precharging technique which minimize the bit-line and data-bus delay. A feedback-controlled address-transition-detector circuit has been adopted to assure the fast access time in the presence of address skew. A 1.0-/spl mu/m double-polysilicon and single-metal process technology with a polycide gate offers a memory cell size of 90 /spl mu/m/SUP Z/ and a chip size of 47.4 mm/SUP 2/.  相似文献
