In this work, the flammability behaviors and synergistic effects of red phosphorus masterbatch (RPM) with expandable graphite (EG) in flame‐retardant high‐density polyethylene/ethylene vinyl‐acetate copolymer (HDPE/EVA) composites have been investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data obtained from LOI, UL‐94 test and CCT showed that suitable amount of RPM had synergistic effects with EG in the HDPE/EVA/EG/RPM composites. The addition of RPM greatly increased the LOI values by 3.4%, obtained UL‐94 V‐0 rating, decreased the heat release rates and total heat release, and prolongated the ignition time when 6.7 phr RPM substituted for EG in the HDPE/EVA/EG/RPM composites. The data from TGA and FTIR spectra also indicated the synergistic effects of RPM with EG considerably enhanced the thermal degradation temperatures. The morphological observations after UL‐94, CCT, and SEM images presented positive evidences that the synergistic effects took place for RPM with EG, and the flame‐retardant mechanism has been changed in flame‐retardant HDPE/EVA/EG/RPM composites. The formation of stable and compact charred residues promoted by RPM acted as effective heat barriers and thermal insulations, which improved the flame‐retardant performances and prevented the underlying polymer materials from burning. The synergistic effects of 4A zeolite (4A) on the thermal degradation, flame retardancy, and char formation of an efficient halogen‐free flame‐retardant ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer composite (EVA/IFR) were investigated by limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), cone calorimeter test (CCT), digital photography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS) and thermogravimetric analytical (TGA) methods. It was found that a small amount of 4A clearly improved the LOI value of the EVA/IFR composite and reinforced the fire retardant performance with a great reduction in the combustion parameters of the EVA/IFR system from the CCT test. The entire composites passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating test. The TGA and integral procedure decomposition temperature (IDPT) results showed that 4A enhanced the thermal stability of the EVA/IFR system and increased the char residue content effectively. The morphological structures observed by digital and SEM imaging revealed that 4A could promote EVA/IFR to form a more continuous and compact intumescent char layer. The LRS and EDS results demonstrated that by introduction of 4A into the EVA/IFR system, a more graphite structure was formed with increase phosphorus content in the char residue. POLYM. ENG. Epoxy resins are widely used as coatings, adhesives and primers and in semiconductor encapsulation. A requirement that has recently gained importance is that of flame resistance, and imparting flame retardancy to epoxy resins has attracted much attention. Expandable graphite (EG) can improve flame‐retardant properties of polymers. Due to poor compatibility between polymer matrix and EG, flame‐retardant performance will be impaired. EG can be functionalized using a coupling agent. This gives rise to covalent bonding between organic and inorganic phases. This will improve the compatibility between filler and polymer to enhance the thermal stability of composites. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to characterize the functionalizing reaction between coupling agent and EG. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) were used to calculate the thermal stability of composites. The results show that functionalized EG can improve the thermal stability of the composites. TGA/mass spectroscopy (MS) shows that the amount of toxic gases liberated from the composites is less than that from pure epoxy. Novel epoxy/EG composites were prepared successfully via the sol–gel method. The results of TGA, IPDT and TGA/MS showed that functionalized EG can enhance the thermal stability of composites and can suppress the production of toxic gases. The composite materials could provide a safer choice. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of flame retarding rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites based on expandable graphite (EG) and aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) were prepared by the one‐pot method. The properties were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, cone calorimeter test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), real‐time Fourier transform‐infrared spectra (RT‐FT‐IR), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. The results indicate that both EG and AHP could enhance the flame retardency of RPUF composites. Besides, the flame retardant effect of EG was better than that of AHP. The results also show that partial substitution of EG with AHP could improve the flame retardency of RPUF, and EG and AHP presented an excellent synergistic effect on flame retardancy. What is more, compared with RPUF/20EG and RPUF/20AHP, the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) of RPUF/15EG/5AHP were lower.TGA results indicate that partial substitution of EG with AHP could improve the char residue which provided better flame retardancy for RPUF composites. The thermal degradation process of RPUF composites and the chemical component of the char residue were investigated by RT‐FT‐IR and XPS. And the results prove that RPUF/15EG/5AHP had higher heat resistance in the later stage. Compared with the RPUF composites filled with EG, a better cell structure and mechanical properties were observed with the substitution of AHP for part of EG. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A new intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system consisting of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and charing‐foaming agent (CFA) and a little organic montmorillonite (OMMT) was used in low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)/ethylene‐vinyl acetate (EVA) composite. According to limiting oxygen index (LOI) value and UL‐94 rating obtained from this work, the reasonable mass ratio of APP to CFA was 3 : 1, and OMMT could obviously enhance the flame retardancy of the composites. Cone calorimeter (CONE) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were applied to evaluate the burning behavior and thermal stability of IFR‐LLDPE/EVA (LLDPE/EVA) composites. The results of cone calorimeter showed that heat release rate peak (HRR‐peak) and smoke production rate peak (SPR‐peak) and time to ignition (TTI) of IFR‐LLDPE/EVA composites decreased clearly compared with the pure blend. TGA data showed that IFR could enhance the thermal stability of the composites at high temperature and effectively increase the char residue. The morphological structures of the composites observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that OMMT could well disperse in the composites without exfoliation, and obviously improve the compatibility of components of IFR in LLDPE/EVA blend. The morphological structures of char layer obtained from Cone indicated that OMMT make the char layer structure be more homogenous and more stable. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Different particle size of expandable graphite (EG) were incorporated into water‐blown semi‐rigid polyurethane foams (SPFs), which acted as the fire shield, in order to enhance the fire retardant properties. In this study, the particle size of EG was systematically varied from 70 µm to 960 µm. The effect of EG particle size on the density, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of SPFs was also investigated. Results showed that EG with smaller particle size showed almost no effect on the fire retardant properties of SPFs while the larger particle size of EG could effectively enhance it. It was observed that the flame retardancy of the composite improved with the increase of EG size which was attribute to the formation and densification of isolation layer with the increase in volume of expanded graphite. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of EG/SPF composites increased linearly by two steps with the increase in EG particle size. Horizontal burning test confirmed the above conclusion. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that EG particles and its size exhibited minor effect on the thermal stability of the SPF composites. Moreover, SPF filled with medium particle size of EG (about 400 µm) exhibited a poor compression performance compared with the others. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. This paper is aimed to illustrate the structure and thermal property of intumescent char produced by flame‐retardant polymers containing expandable graphite (EG). For this purpose, high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) flame retarded by EG individually or in combination with microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) was prepared. The results indicate that the intumescent char from HIPS/EG/MRP composite, which contains a small amount of phosphorus element and more oxygen element, is much more compact and continuous than that from HIPS/EG composite with identical loading of flame retardant due to binding effect of phosphoric acid and its derivatives. The intumescent char produced by HIPS/EG/MRP composite exhibits much enhanced thermal and thermo‐oxidative stability as well as thermal‐insulating effect, which can withstand destruction of heat and oxygen effectively and thus provide a good fire‐proof barrier. The temperature beneath this intumescent char is decreased significantly in case of action by flame. By comparison, the porous and loose intumescent char generated by HIPS/EG composite has poor thermo‐oxidative endurance, and most of it can be consumed in air at high temperature without effective protection for the polymer. This has resulted in remarkable increase in flame retardancy of the HIPS/EG/MRP composite.  相似文献

The effects of expandable graphite (EG) of different particle sizes, on the fire‐retardant properties of high‐density rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) (0.45 g cm?3) were studied. Samples of EG with different particle sizes were obtained by pulverization in an ultra‐high‐speed mixer for 4 and 13 min, respectively. It was shown that as received (EG0) and 4 min pulverized EG (EG4) efficiently improved the fire‐retardant properties of RPUF composites, while 13 min pulverized EG (EG13) did not. The char of the burned composites filled with EG0 and EG4 covered the whole surface of the samples and formed a complete physical barrier. This barrier material prevented combustible gases from feeding the flame and also isolated oxygen efficiently from the burning material. EG13 did not produce enough char to cover the whole surface of the burning sample, resulting in poor fire‐retardant property of the RPUF composites. Thermal degradation tests of the foams by thermogravimetric analysis indicated that EG showed negligible effects on the thermal stability of the RPUFs. A halogen‐free intumescent flame retardant expandable graphite composite (EG), with an initial expansion temperature of 202°C and expansion volume of 517 mL g−1, was successfully prepared via a facile two‐step intercalation method, i.e. using KMnO4 as oxidant and H2SO4, Na2SiO3·9H2O as intercalators. The prepared EG flame retardant was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, flame retardancy and thermal property of various ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composites, including EVA/EG and EVA/EG/APP (ammonium polyphosphate) specimens, were studied through limiting oxygen index instrument (LOI), vertical combustion UL‐94 rating, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The results indicate that the EVA/EG and EVA/EG/APP composites exhibit a better flame retardancy. Addition of EG at a mass fraction of 30% leads LOI of 70EVA/30EG composite improved to 28.7%. Even more, the synergistic effect between EG and APP improves the LOI of 70EVA/10APP /20EG composite to 30.7%. This synergistic efficiency is attributed to the formation of compact and stable layer‐structure, and the prepared EG can make EVA composite reach the UL‐94 level of V‐0. POLYM. Silica (SiO2) nanohybrid expandable graphite (nEG) particles fabricated through one-step method are used as an efficient flame retardant for polypropylene (PP)/polyamide 6 (PA6) blends. The effect of nEG on the flammability, thermal stability, crystallization behaviors, and mechanical properties of PP/PA6 composites is investigated by using limit oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical tests. Compared with pure expandable graphite (EG), nEG improves the flame retardancy of composites. The results of LOI show that LOI of PP/PA6/nEG10 and PP/PA6/nEG15 composites are 26.0% and 27.2%, respectively. But the LOI values of PP/PA6/EG10 and PP/PA6/EG15 composites are 25.7% and 26.9%, respectively. The UL-94 test results show that PP/PA6/nEG10 composites reach V-1 level when the nEG content is only 10%. However, the PP/PA6 composites with 10% EG does not pass the UL-94 test. In addition, PP/PA6 composites with 15% nEG can reach V-0 level. The CCT results further show that nEG has a higher flame-retardant efficiency than pure EG for PP/PA6 blends. The thermal stability of PP/PA6/nEG composites is better than that of PP/PA6/EG composites. The mechanical property tests indicate that nEG is more conducive to maintain the tensile and impact strengths of PP/PA6 blends than EG due to the enhanced compatibility and interfacial adhesion.  相似文献

Organically modified zirconium phosphate (OZrP) was prepared by cation exchange of natural counterions with hexadecyltri‐n‐butylphosphonium bromide. Subsequently, OZrP and expandable graphite (EG) were incorporated into polyurethane elastomer (PUE), and the thermal stability and flame retardancy of PUE composites were investigated. The thermogravimetric analysis indicated that partial substitution of EG with OZrP could improve both the thermal stability and char yield of PUE composites. The cone calorimetry and limiting oxygen index test showed that partial substitution of EG with OZrP could further enhance the flame retardancy of PUE composites and presented an excellent synergistic effect. Moreover, the char residue of PUE composites was analyzed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and laser Raman spectroscopy. Their results indicated that the synergistic effect of the physical barrier to prevent transmission of heat and mass between condensed and gas phases. Therefore, the further combustion of the nether material could be inhibited, which created better flame retardancy. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 45188.  相似文献

In this study, the flammability characterization and synergistic effects of different particle size of expandable graphite (EG) with modified magnesium hydroxide (MH) in flame‐retardant polypropylene (PP) composites were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that the particle size of EG had a great effect on the flammability of the PP/MH/EG composites. The EG2 with smaller particle size could apparently increase the LOI value and improved the UL‐94 flammability properties rating of the PP composites. The data obtained from the TGA and FTIR curves indicated that the thermo‐oxidative stability of PP/MH/EG composites increased with decreasing particle size of EG. And the smaller the particle size of EG, the higher the residues of the composite. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 47:1756–1760, 2007. © 2007 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Low flame retardant efficiency and poor acid resistance of filled polymer composites are two main drawbacks of magnesium hydroxide (MH) as a flame retardant (FR). To solve these problems, expandable graphite (EG) and microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) were introduced into polypropylene/magnesium hydroxide (PP/MH) composite by melt compounding. The obtained PP/MH/EG/MRP quadruple composite was studied regarding its fire behavior as well as acid resistance. Obvious flame retardant synergism among MH, EG, and MRP is found in PP, which diminishes the loading of FR from 63.0 to 37.5 wt% to obtain V-0 rating in UL-94 test and low smoke release. Compact intumescent char with high thermo-oxidative stability was generated on composite surface, which plays a vital role in flame retardancy. The removal of MH by acid erosion on PP/MH/EG/MRP composite surface does not affect production of intumescent char and fire behavior of this composite. The composite displays good fire retardancy, smoke inhibition, and acid resistivity concurrently. This article renders an easy and cheap route to overcome the main faults of MH.  相似文献

A phenethyl‐bridged DOPO derivative (DiDOPO) is combined with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The flame retardancy and thermal stability of TPU/PTFE/DiDOPO composites with different weight percentages of DiDOPO are investigated by using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, cone calorimetry test (CCT), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy‐dispersive spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). With the incorporation of 8 wt% DiDOPO, the LOI value of TPU/PTFE/DiDOPO composites increases to 34.0% from 25.4% of TPU, and the V‐0 rating level is achieved. The CCT results indicate that the peak heat release rate and total heat release of TPU/PTFE/DiDOPO composites decrease due to the addition of DiDOPO and PTFE. The thermal decomposition process of TPU is changed due to the present of DiDOPO and PTFE. Based on this, the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method for the determination of characteristic degradation kinetics parameters is evaluated. SEM results and residues from TGA curves show that the addition of DiDOPO promotes the increase in the char layer and a crosslinked char coating exists after burning. The flame‐retardant mechanism is flame inhibition. Overall, these findings indicate that the combination of DiDOPO with PTFE in TPU is an effective way in developing high‐performance resins with attractive flame retardancy. POLYM. ENG. Pentaerythritol phosphate melamine salt (PPMS) as a single‐molecule intumescent fire retardant was synthesized and characterized. The influence of the PPMS content on the combustion and thermal decomposition processes of intumescent‐flame‐retardant (IFR) ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composites was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurement, UL 94 rating testing, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The LOI and UL 94 rating results illustrate that PPMS used in EVA improved the flame retardancy of the EVA composites. The cone calorimetry test results show that the addition of PPMS significantly decreased the heat‐release rate, total heat release, and smoke‐production rate and enhanced the residual char fire performance of the EVA composites. The IFR–EVA3 composite showed the lowest heat‐release and smoke‐production rates and the highest char residue; this means that the IFR–EVA3 composite had the best flame retardancy. The thermogravimetry results show that the IFR–EVA composites had more residual char than pure EVA; the char residue yield increased with increasing PPMS content. The analysis results for the char residue structures also illustrated that the addition of PPMS into the EVA resin helped to enhance the fire properties of the char layer and improve the flame retardancy of the EVA composites. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water‐blown rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) with two different particle sizes (180 and 300 μm) of expandable graphite (EG) as a flame‐retardant additive were prepared, and the effects on the mechanical, morphological, water absorption, thermal conductivity, thermal, and flame‐retardant properties were studied. In this investigation, EG content was varied from 5 to 50 php by weight. The mechanical properties of PUF decreased with increasing EG loading in both cases. The water absorption of the PUF increased with an increase in the EG loading mainly because of the collapse of foam cells, as evidenced from the scanning electron microscopy pictures. The thermal conductivity of the EG‐filled PUF showed that the insulation properties decreased with EG loading. The flame‐retardant properties (limiting oxygen index and char yield measurement) of the PUF improved with increasing EG loading. PUF filled with the higher particle size EG showed better mechanical properties and fire‐retardant properties than the PUF filled with the lower particle size EG. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study showed an efficient and novel way to prepare expandable graphite (EG) which is one kind of halogen‐free flame retardant using the O3‐hydrothermal process. The results showed the expanded volume of EG using the O3‐hydrothermal process was higher than those compared to convectional liquid phase synthesis, ultrasound irradiation and hydrothermal method. X‐ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the structure and confirm that EG had been prepared. Scanning electron microscope was utilized to observe the morphology of EG and char from HDPE/O3‐HEG composites. Cone calorimeter, limiting oxygen index, and UL‐94 were used to investigate the flame retardant property of the HDPE/O3‐HEG composites and showed the HDPE/O3‐HEG composite possesses excellent flame retardant property. Through the simple precipitation of palygorskite (PGS) by zinc borate (ZB) (to make PGS@ZB) and the decoration of PGS@ZB by dodecylamine (N), a novel organic‐inorganic@inorganic hybrid flame retardant of PGS@ZB‐N was prepared and was incorporated with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) to improve its flame retardance. The structure and morphology of PGS@ZB‐N were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and it was confirmed that the PGS@ZB‐N hybrid had been successfully prepared. The flame retardancy and burning behavior of EVA/PGS@ZB‐N/EG (EG = expandable graphite) composite were studied through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 (by the vertical burning test), and cone calorimeter test (CCT) characterizations. The prepared EVA/PGS@ZB‐N/EG composite obtained an LOI value of 41.2% with the addition of 30 wt% PGS@ZB‐N/EG. It was found that EVA/PGS@ZB‐N/EG was protected through a gas phase and condensed phase alternating synergistic effect mechanism.  相似文献

Influence of independent Mg–Al‐layered double hydroxide (LDH), silicate modified expandable graphite (EG), mixture of LDH and EG at various ratios on ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) combustion behavior and thermal stability was detected in sequence through the limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion (UL‐94) level, microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) tests and thermal gravimetric/differential thermal gravimetric (TG/DTG) analysis. Results show that the 30 wt % LDH can improve the LOI of 70EVA/30LDH to 27.0%, but the combustion accompanies with serious melt‐dropping. While, the same amount of the EG can increase the LOI, UL‐94 level to 28.5%, V‐0 respectively. However, the combination of LDH and EG can further enhance the 70EVA/20LDH/10EG flame retardancy, it presents the LOI of 29.7%, UL‐94 level of V‐0, and total heat release of 29.5 kJ g?1. The excellent flame retardancy is attributed to its compact residue. Compared with residue mass, the residue compactness plays a more important role in improving flame retardancy. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134 , 44634.  相似文献
