Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes/carbon fiber (MWCNTs/CF) hybrid fillers are employed to prepare MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites. Results reveal that a great improvement of the thermal conductivities of the epoxy composites with the addition of MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers, and the thermal conductivity of the MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites is 1.426 W/mK with 8 vol% treated MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers (5 vol% MWCNTs + 3 vol% CF). Both the flexural and impact strength of the MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites are increased firstly, but decreased with the excessive addition of MWCNTs. The flexural and impact strength of the MWCNTs/epoxy composites are optimal with 2 vol% MWCNTs. For a given MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers loading, the surface treatment of MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers can further increase the thermal conductivities and mechanical properties of the MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites. Epoxy, prepared through aminomethyl 3,5,5‐trimethylcyclohexylamine hardening of diglycidylether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) prepolymer, toughened with polycarbonate (PC) in different proportions, and reinforced with carbon fiber, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, tensile and interlaminar shear strength testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A single glass transition temperature was found in all compositions of the epoxy/PC blend system. The tensile properties of the blend were found to be better than that of the pure epoxy matrix. They increased with PC content up to 10%, beyond which they decreased. The influence of carbon fiber orientation on the mechanical properties of the composites was studied, where the fiber content was kept constant at 68 wt %. Composites with 45° fiber orientation were found to have very weak mechanical properties, and the mechanical properties of the blend matrix composites were found to be better than those of the pure epoxy matrix composites. The fracture and surface morphologies of the composite samples were characterized by SEM. Because of the relatively high specific mechanical properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composite materials, they are often used as structural components in aerospace applications. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) can be added to the epoxy matrix to improve the overall mechanical properties of the composite. The resulting GNP/carbon fiber/epoxy hybrid composites have been studied using multiscale modeling to determine the influence of GNP volume fraction, epoxy crosslink density, and GNP dispersion on the mechanical performance. The hierarchical multiscale modeling approach developed herein includes Molecular Dynamics (MD) and micromechanical modeling, and it is validated with experimental testing of the same hybrid composite material system. The results indicate that the multiscale modeling approach is accurate and provides physical insight into the composite mechanical behavior. Also, the results quantify the substantial impact of GNP volume fraction and dispersion on the transverse mechanical properties of the hybrid composite while the effect on the axial properties is shown to be insignificant.  相似文献

Siliconized epoxy‐matrix systems have been developed by an interpenetrating mechanism using epoxy resins GY 250 and LY 556 (Ciba‐Geigy) and hydroxyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane with γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane as crosslinker in the presence of dibutyltindilaurate catalyst. Aliphatic amine (HY 951, Ciba‐Geigy), aromatic amine (HT 972, Ciba‐Geigy) and polyamidoamine (HY 840, Ciba‐Geigy) are used as curing agents for epoxy resins. The tentative level of 10% siloxane introduction into epoxy resin has been ascertained from experimental studies to obtain reasonable improvements in the impact behavior without compromising other mechanical properties. The impact behavior of E‐glass reinforced composites made from the siliconized epoxy resin is enhanced to 2–4 times over that measured on the composites made from a pure epoxy resin. Composites cured with aromatic amine impart better mechanical properties than those cured with aliphatic amine and polyamidoamine.  相似文献

In this work, we undertook a comparative study of the dynamic dielectric analysis of two unidirectional epoxy composites: flax‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy and flax/carbon‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy (FCFRE). In both composites, three relaxation processes were identified. The first one is the water dipoles polarization imputed to the presence of polar water molecules in flax fiber. The second relaxation process associated with conductivity occurs as a result of the carriers charges diffusion noted for high temperature above glass transition and low frequencies. As for the third dielectric relaxation associated with the interfacial polarization effect is attributable to the accumulation of charges at the fibers/matrix interface. The presence of two carbon plies in the reinforcement gives rise to two interfacial polarization effects in the FCFRE composite. The analysis of the Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars and the water dipoles polarizations using the Havriliak–Negami model revealed that the presence of two plies of carbon can locally decrease the adhesion of flax fibers in the matrix. This analysis was supported by the thermal properties using a differential scanning calorimety and the mechanical properties using a short beam shear test. POLYM. The high modulus carbon fiber (M40J) sized by epoxy resin E51 and E20 reinforced bisphenol A dicyanate (2,2′‐bis(4‐cyanatophenyl) isopropylidene resin composite was prepared in order to investigate the influence of epoxy sizing of the fiber on the properties of the composite. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) analysis showed that epoxy resin have catalytic effect on cure reaction of cyanate ester. Mechanical properties of the composite revealed that M40J fiber sized by epoxy resin could improve the flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of M40J/bisphenol A dicyanate composites. The micro‐morphology of the composite fractures was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Reduced flaws were observed in the M40J‐bisphenol A dicyanate interface when the sized fiber was used. Water absorption of the composites was also investigated. The epoxy resin matrix of carbon fiber (CF)‐reinforced epoxy composites was modified with novolac resin (NR) to improve the matrix‐dominated mechanical properties of composites. Flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and impact strength were measured with unfilled, 7 wt% NR, 13 wt% NR, and 18 wt% NR filled to epoxy to identify the effect of adding NR on the mechanical properties of composites. The results showed that both interfacial and impact properties of composites were improved except for flexural property. The largest improvement in ILSS and impact strength were obtained with 13 wt% loading of NR. ILSS and impact strength were improved by 7.3% and 38.6%, respectively, compared with the composite without NR. The fracture and surface morphologies of the composite specimens were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Intimate bonding of the fibers and the matrix was evident with the content of 7–13 wt% NR range. Decrease of crosslinking density and formation of NR transition layer were deduced with adding NR. Epoxy resins are widely used in a variety of applications because of their high chemical and corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. But few types of epoxy resins are brittle and possess low toughness which makes them unsuitable for several structural applications. In this work, carbon nanofibres have been dispersed uniformly into the epoxy resin at a very low concentration (0.07 vol. %). Improvement of 98% in Young modulus, 24% in breaking stress and 144% in work of rupture was achieved in the best sample. The emphasis is on achieving uniform dispersion of carbon nanofibers into epoxy resin using a combination of techniques such as ultrasonication, use of solvent and surfactants. The fracture surfaces of the specimens were studied under scanning electron microscope to see the fracture mechanism of nanocomposites under tensile load and correlate it to the enhancement in their properties. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(styrene‐co‐acylonitrile) was used to modify diglycedyl ether of bisphenol‐A type epoxy resin cured with diamino diphenyl sulfone and the modified epoxy resin was used as the matrix for fiber‐reinforced composites (FRPs) to get improved mechanical properties. E‐glass fiber was used as fiber reinforcement. The tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the blends and composites were investigated. The blends exhibited considerable improvement in mechanical properties. The scanning electron micrographs of the fractured surfaces of the blends and tensile fractured surfaces of the composites were also analyzed. The micrographs showed the influence of morphology on the properties of blends. Results showed that the mechanical properties of glass FRPs increased gradually upon fiber loading. The treated hybrid fillers of aluminum nitride/glass fibers (AlN/GF) were performed to prepare the AlN/GF/epoxy composites by casting method. Results showed that the flexural and impact strength of the composites were increased firstly, but decreased with the excessive addition of AlN. The mechanical properties were optimal with 5 wt% treated AlN. The thermal conductivities of the composites were improved with the increasing content of AlN, and the thermal conductive coefficient λ was 1.412 W/mK with 70 wt% treated AlN, about seven times higher than that of pure epoxy resin. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the composites were increased with the increasing content of AlN. For a given AlN/GF hybrid fillers loading, the surface treatment of AlN/GF hybrid fillers exhibited a positive effect on the mechanical properties and thermal conductivities of the composites. POLYM. The insufficient viscoelastic resistance of fiber reinforced plastics can be retrofitted by the addition of more rigid nano fillers to the polymer matrix. In this study, carbon fibers plies were grafted with zinc oxide (ZnO) nano‐rods and the hybridized reinforcement was utilized in laminated composites. Flexural creep tests were carried out using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and the time/temperature superposition principle was employed for accelerated testing. To verify the applicability of TTPS, prolonged stress relaxation tests were also carried out in flexural mode. Data from the DMA flexural creep tests revealed that the whiskerization of carbon fibers with ZnO nano rods reduced the creep compliance by 23% at elevated temperatures and prolonged durations. Also, the relaxation data confirmed the applicability of TTPS to these hybrid composites. The stress relaxation modulus improved by 65% in comparison to composites based on neat carbon fibers. POLYM. Epoxy composites filled with glass fiber and organo‐montmorillonite (OMMT) were prepared by the hand lay‐up method. The flexural properties of the epoxy/glass fiber/OMMT composites were characterized by a three‐point bending test. The flexural modulus and strength of epoxy/glass fiber were increased significantly in the presence of OMMT. The optimum loading of OMMT in the epoxy/glass fiber composites was attained at 3 wt%, where the improvement in flexural modulus and strength was approximately 66 and 95%, respectively. The fractured surface morphology of the epoxy/glass fiber/OMMT composites was investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy. It was found that OMMT adheres on the epoxy/glass fiber interface, and this is also supported by evidence from energy dispersive X‐ray analysis. The elastic constants of closed mesh braided/woven fabrics are generally obtained from finite element analysis, fabric geometry model, and modified classical laminate plate theory. These models are complex and often impractical for industrial design purposes and do not address the cases of open mesh braided/woven fabrics. This paper proposes an alternative to existing models and software packages. Simple regression‐based empirical equations were developed to obtain Ex, Ey, Gxy, and νxy of braided/woven fabrics at any angle‐ply angle using the braid/weave unit cell volume fraction (Vf0), the fiber volume fraction (Vf), and the elastic constants of an equivalent angle‐ply laminate (E, E, G, ν). Design equation predictions were verified by comparing them to a previously validated modified classical laminate plate theory (CLPT) model using various fiber/resin combinations. It was shown in a previous study that for unidirectional (0‐deg) graphite/epoxy composites, the fracture toughness under hydrostatic pressure increased 38% as hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 200 MPa. This work investigates the compressive delamination behavior of multi‐directional graphite/epoxy laminated composites subjected to various hydrostatic pressures. Compressive delamination tests were performed under four hydrostatic pressure levels: 0.1, 100, 200, and 300 MPa Eighty‐eight‐ply dog‐bone type specimens with a single delamination at the center of the specimen were used. The stacking sequence applied was [0°/±45°/90°]lls. The compliance and fracture load were determined from load‐displacement curves as a function of hydrostatic pressure. The results show that the compliance decreases with increasing pressure while fracture load increases with increasing pressure. The compressive delamination toughness, Gc, was determined from the compliance method as a function of applied hydrostatic pressure. The results also show that Gc is significantly affected by hydrostatic pressure and increases from 2.11 kJ/m2 to 3.04 kJ/m2 (44% increase) as hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 300 MPa. Visual examination of the fractured surface revealed that the increase of Gc is due to the suppression of micro‐cracks With increasing pressure. It was also found from SEM examination of delaminated surface that the Gc increase is due to more epoxy adhering to the fibers and more plastic deformation of epoxy material as applied hydrostatic pressure increases.  相似文献

A uniaxial natural fabric of Hildegardia populifolia was used as a reinforcement for a polycarbonate‐toughened epoxy. The Hildegardia fabric was treated with a 5% sodium hydroxide solution for 1 h. The fabric was spray‐coated with a 1% silane‐based coupling agent. The variation of the chemical resistance and void content with different fabric contents and fiber orientations was studied. The morphology of the fractured composites was investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM micrographs indicate that the bonding between the Hildegardia fabric and the matrix was enhanced partially by the alkali treatment. The alkali treatment in the presence of the silane coupling agent gave rise to matrix skin formation on the surface of the fibers, which indicated good bonding between the reinforcement and the matrix. Hildegardia/polycarbonate‐toughened epoxy composites were found to have reasonable chemical and water resistance. The liquid absorption increased when the fabric was treated with an alkali, when the coupling agent was used, and in the presence of water and aqueous solutions. The use of micro or nano‐fillers to optimize the properties of epoxy resins has become a common practice. The Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are considered excellent fillers because of their strength, stiffness, thermal conductivity, electrical capacity, and thermal stability, along with large electromagnetic wave absorption capability in the microwave range. In this work, electromagnetic absorption properties and dynamic‐mechanical response obtained with the incorporation of CNT into glass fiber/epoxy composites have been studied. A novel procedure to disperse and deposit CNT onto glass fiber fabrics has been developed to reach high overall content of CNT in the composite (4.15 wt%). Storage modulus increased with the incorporation of CNT, especially when they had also been incorporated into the epoxy, and for higher frequency (3 Hz). The response of the composites to electromagnetic radiation has shown an increasing trend for higher CNT content (up to 2 wt%), reaching an excellent attenuation value of up to −18.3 dB (98.5% of absorption). In this investigation, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/short carbon fiber (SCF) composites have been prepared by solution casting technique to enhance electrical and dielectric properties with very low‐electrical percolation threshold (0.5 phr SCF). The effect of SCF content on mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of the composites have also been investigated. The mechanical properties of the composites are found to reduce compared to neat PVDF due to poor polymer–filler interaction which can be concluded from FESEM micrographs showing poor bonding between PVDF and SCF. The PVDF/SCF composites exhibit either positive temperature coefficient effect of resistivity or negative temperature coefficient effect of resistivity depending on the loading of SCF in the polymer matrix. The change in conductivity during heating–cooling cycle for these composites shows electrical hysteresis along with electrical set. The melting point of the composites marginally increases with the increase in fiber loading in PVDF matrix as evidenced from DSC thermograms. X‐ray diffraction analysis reveals the crystallinity of PVDF decreases with the increase in SCF loading in matrix polymer. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Natural fiber‐thermoplastic composite materials, based on their cost‐effectiveness and environmental friendliness, have attracted much interest both scientifically and technologically in recent years. Other advantages of natural fibers are good specific strength, less abrasion, and less irritation upon inhalation (in comparison with some common inorganic fillers). In the present contribution, roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) fibers were chosen and used as reinforcing fillers for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) for the first time, due mainly to the cost‐effectiveness and natural abundance on Thai soil. Processibility and mechanical properties of the resulting composites were investigated against the type and the mean size of the fibers. The results showed that the highest mechanical properties were observed when roselle bast fibers were incorporated. When whole‐stalk (WS) fibers (i.e., the weight ratio of bast and core fibers was 40 : 60 w/w) were used, moderate mechanical properties of the resulting composites were realized. The optimal contents of the WS fibers and the maleic anhydride‐grafted iPP compatibilizer that resulted in an improvement in some of the mechanical properties of the resulting composites were 40 and 7 wt %, respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A high-toughness epoxy has been prepared using carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) as a toughening agent to modify the AG-80 epoxy resin. High-performance carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites are fabricated using the CTBN-toughened epoxy resin as the matrix and two types of CF, namely, T800SC and T800HB, as reinforcement. The mechanical properties of the matrix, surface properties of the CFs, tensile properties, and fracture morphologies of the composites are systematically investigated to elucidate the key factors influencing interfacial bonding in high-performance CF/EP composites. The results reveal that the most significant improvement in toughness is achieved when the CTBN content is 6.90 wt.% in the epoxy resin. Owing to the high content of polar functional groups and excellent surface wettability of T800SC, the T800SC/EP composite exhibits superior mechanical properties compared with the T800HB/EP composite.  相似文献
