Natural rubber/polystyrene (NR/PS) blend films with weight ratios of 70/30, 60/40, and 50/50 were prepared using polystyrene grafted natural rubber copolymers (NR‐g‐PS) as the compatibilizer. Copolymers with molar ratios of 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 were synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using tert‐butyl hydroperoxide/tetraethylene pentamine as an initiator. The copolymers were subsequently added into the blends at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 phr. The mixtures were cast into films by the solution‐casting method using toluene as the casting solvent. Mechanical and morphological properties of the prepared films were investigated. The film prepared from 80/20 NR‐g‐PS showed higher tensile and tear strength, as well as finer domain size of the dispersed phase, than those prepared from 90/10 and 70/30 NR‐g‐PS. However, the mechanical properties of the films were decreased at high loading of the copolymers. In addition, themogravimetric analysis revealed that weight loss was decreased upon introduction of the compatibilizer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 95: 826–831, 2005  相似文献

Graft copolymers of natural rubber (NR) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were prepared using cumene hydroperoxide and tetraethylene pentamine as redox initiators via the semibatch emulsion polymerization technique. Various molar percentage ratios of NR/MMA were studied in the grafting reaction (i.e., 95/5, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, and 60/40). The graft copolymer with a 70/30 molar ratio was selected and used to prepare rubber blends with cassava starch. The starch was used at levels of 0, 20, 40, and 60 phr. Another set of rubber blends was prepared for comparison purposes. The NR‐g‐poly(MMA) (PMMA, 75 phr) was blended with 25 phr of NR air dried sheets (ADS) and a given level of the cassava starch. We found that the Mooney viscosity, shear stress, and shear viscosity increased with an increasing concentration of cassava starch. This may be attributed to the chemical interactions between the polar groups of the NR‐g‐PMMA and the cassava starch. The blends were later compounded using a compounding formulation according to ASTM D 3184‐89. A similar short delay onset of vulcanization (i.e., approximately 1 min) was observed for the whole set of compounds under study. However, different curing characteristics were observed for the blends of NR‐g‐PMMA–cassava starch and NR‐g‐PMMA–ADS–cassava starch. The NR‐g‐PMMA–cassava starch compounds exhibited two‐stage curing characteristics. The curing curve had a slight reversion at a testing time of approximately 8 min. The shear modulus then abruptly increased with an increasing testing time in the range of 20–60 min. The curing curves for NR‐g‐PMMA–ADS–cassava starch blends exhibited a single curing stage with a shear modulus that increased slightly with the testing time was increased from 20 to 60 min. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigated the effect of polylactic acid (PLA)/poly‐d ‐lactide (PDLA) stereocomplex (ST) on the improvement of the mechanical and thermal properties of various rubber‐toughened PLAs. In this work, natural rubber (NR), synthetic polyisoprene rubber (IR), silicone rubber (SI), acrylic rubber (ACM), acrylic core–shell rubber (CSR), thermoplastic copolyester (TPE) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) were chosen as the toughening agents. 5 wt% PDLA was melt‐blended with PLA to form ST crystals in the presence of 15 wt% rubber in an internal mixer at 180 °C and 50 rpm. It was found that the melting temperature of ST crystal (Tm,sc) and the impact strength of ST/rubber blends were strongly correlated with the rubber domain size. For the blends of ST with compatible rubbers (ACM, CSR, TPE and TPU), the rubber domain sizes tended to be smaller with higher Tm,sc and higher impact strength than the blends with incompatible rubbers (NR, IR and SI). However, the presence of ST crystals in PLA/incompatible rubber blends, especially the blends with NR and IR, led to a significant increase in the rubber domain size and plunges in tensile toughness and impact strength. On the other hand, the presence of these crystals in PLA/compatible blends did not change the rubber size or the impact strength significantly compared with those without ST crystals except in the case of ST/ACM, which resulted in a large increase in the impact strength. Among all rubber types, CSR provided the highest impact strength for both the PLA and ST systems. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Natural rubber (NR) latex was grafted by emulsion polymerization with styrene monomer, using cumene hydroperoxide/tetraethylene pentamene as redox initiator system. The polystyrene‐grafted NR (PS‐g‐NR) was hydrogenated by diimide reduction in the latex form using hydrazine and hydrogen peroxide with boric acid as a promoter. At the optimum condition for graft copolymerization, a grafting efficiency of 81.5% was obtained. In addition, the highest hydrogenation level of 47.2% was achieved using a hydrazine:hydrogen peroxide molar ratio of 1:1.1. Hydrogenation of the PS‐g‐NR (H(PS‐g‐NR)) increased the thermal stability. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of the H(PS‐g‐NR) particles revealed a nonhydrogenated rubber core and hydrogenated outer rubber layer, in accordance with the layer model. The addition of H(PS‐g‐NR) at 10 wt % as modifier in an acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) copolymer increased the tensile and impact strengths and the thermal resistance of the ABS blends, and to a greater extent than that provided by blending with NR or PS‐g‐NR. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New bio‐based diblock copolymers were synthesized from poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and natural rubber (NR). NR polymer chains were modified to obtain hydroxyl telechelic natural rubber oligomers (HTNR). Condensation polymerization between PLA and HTNR was performed at 110°C during 24 or 48 h. The molecular weight of PLA and HTNR and the molar ratio PLA : HTNR were varied. The new ester linkage in the diblock copolymers was determined by 1H‐NMR. The molecular weight of the diblock copolymers determined from SEC agreed with that expected from calculation. The thermal behavior and degradation temperature were determined by DSC and TGA, respectively. The diblock copolymers were used as a toughening agent of PLA and as a compatibilizer of the PLA/NR blend. PLA blended with the diblock copolymer showed higher impact strength, which was comparable to the one of a PLA/NR blend. The former blend showed smaller dispersed particles as showed by SEM images, indicating the increase in miscibility in the blend due to the PLA block. The compatibilization was effective in the blends containing ~10 wt % of rubber. At a higher rubber content (>10 wt %), coalescence of the NR and diblock copolymer was responsible of the larger rubber diameter in the blends, which causes a decrease of the impact strength. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural rubber (NR) grafted with poly(vinyl propionate) (NR-g-PVP) was prepared by emulsion polymerization. The monomer content was set at 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt%. The chemical structure of NR-g-PVP was confirmed by 1H-NMR and FTIR techniques. The grafting parameters of purified NR-g-PVP were evaluated. Binary (PLA/NR and PLA/NR-g-PVP) and ternary (PLA/NR/NR-g-PVP) blends were prepared by melt blending using a twin-screw extruder. The percentage of grafted PVP on NR affected morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of the blends. In binary blends, 5% grafting showed the greatest improvement of toughness and ductility with PLA, whereas there was no improvement in the mechanical properties of PLA/NR blend from using NR-g-PVP as a compatibilizer. The mechanical properties of the blends are related to mutual compatibility of the components. Good interfacial adhesion and proper particle size of NR were the key factors contributing to mechanical properties.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA) was reactively functionalized with maleic anhydride (MA) and 2,5‐bis(tert‐butylperoxy)?2,5‐dimethylhexane (Luperox 101 or L101) using a twin screw extruder (TSE). The effects of functionality (grafted MA level) and/or number average molecular weight of functionalized PLA (PLA‐g‐MA) as the reactive polymer pairs (binary blends) and reactive compatibilizer (ternary blends) were investigated. Due to the dominant side reaction during melt free radical grafting, polymer degradation or chain scission, PLA‐g‐MA having a higher grafted MA had lower molecular weights and intrinsic viscosity as well as broader molecular weight distribution values. The thermal, physical, mechanical, and morphological properties of binary blends produced by using the TSE and injection molding at a ratio of 70 wt % PLA‐g‐MA and 30 wt % thermoplastic cassava starch (TPCS) were analyzed. The reactive blends having grafted MA more than 0.4 wt % had poor tensile strength and elongation at break. Similar trends in morphology and tensile properties were observed in the reactive ternary blends. The use of PLA‐g‐MA strongly impacted the elongation at break but not the modulus or tensile strength. An increase of PLA‐g‐MA's number average molecular weight ( or Mn) improved the tensile properties of the blends. The reactive ternary blend having 0.1 wt % grafted MA on PLA and PLA‐g‐MA basis and PLA‐g‐MA's Mn of 45 kDa offered the highest elongation at break. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The copolymer of styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene triblock copolymer‐g‐polylactic acid (SEBS‐g‐PLA) was successfully prepared using a novel solvothermal synthetic method, in which the graft copolymerization of PLA and SEBS was simply performed in cholorform solution at 100–150°C with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The effect of various factors including the reaction temperature and time and the content of BPO and PLA on the graft copolymerization was investigated in detail. It is found that the optimal reaction condition for the grafted copolymers SEBS‐g‐PLA was 120°C for 5 h, while the optimal formulation of SEBS/PLA/BPO was 5 g/2 g/0.5 g in 30 mL chloroform. The properties and microstructures of the obtained SEBS‐g‐PLA copolymers were also studied. The tensile strength and elongation at break were higher than that of pure SEBS and improved with the increase of grafting degree. In addition, SEBS‐g‐PLA copolymer possessed two‐phase structure with vague phase boundaries. The as‐prepared SEBS‐g‐PLA copolymers can be used as the toughening component to improve the impact strength of PLA. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Poly(L lactide) (PLA) was blended with polypropylene (PP) at various ratios (PLA:PP = 90 : 10, 80 : 20, 70 : 30, and 50 : 50) with a melt‐blending technique in an attempt to improve the melt processability of PLA. Maleic anhydride (MAH)‐grafted PP and glycidyl methacrylate were used as the reactive compatibilizers to induce miscibility in the blend. The PLA/PP blend at a blend ratio of 90 : 10, exhibited optimum mechanical performance. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis studies showed that the PLA/PP/MAH‐g‐PP blend had the maximum thermal stability with the support of the heat deflection temperature values. Furthermore, dynamic mechanical analysis findings revealed an increase in the glass‐transition temperature and storage modulus with the addition of MAH‐g‐PP compatibilizer. The interaction between the compatibilizers and constituent polymers was confirmed from Fourier transform infrared spectra, and scanning electron microscopy of impact‐fractured samples showed that the soft PP phase was dispersed within the PLA matrix, and a decrease in the domain size of the dispersed phase was observed with the incorporation of MAH‐g‐PP, which acted as a compatibilizer to improve the compatibility between PLA and PP. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pretreatment of the sisal fiber (SF) grafting with L‐lactide (LA) monomer via a ring‐opening polymerization catalyzed by a Sn(II)‐based catalyst was performed to improve the interfacial adhesion between SF and poly (lactic acid) (PLA). Biocomposites from LA‐grafted SF (SF‐g‐LA) and PLA were prepared by compression molding with fiber weight fraction of 10, 20, 30, and 40%, and then were investigated in contrast with alkali‐treated sisal fiber (ASF) reinforced PLA composites and untreated SF reinforced PLA composites. PLA composites reinforced by half‐and‐half SF‐g‐LA/untreated SF (half SF‐g‐LA) were prepared and studied as well, considering the disadvantages of SF‐g‐LA. The results showed that both the tensile properties and flexural properties of the SF‐g‐LA reinforced PLA composites were improved noticeably as the introduction of SF‐g‐LA, compared with pure PLA, untreated SF reinforced PLA composites and ASF reinforced PLA composites. The mechanical properties of the half SF‐g‐LA reinforced PLA composites were not worse, even better in some aspects, than the SF‐g‐LA reinforced PLA composites. Fourier transform infrared analysis and differential scanning calorimetry analysis exhibited that both the chemical composition and crystal structure of the SFs changed after LA grafting. In addition, the fracture surface morphology of the composites was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The morphological studies demonstrated that a better adhesion between LA‐grafted SF and PLA matrix was achieved. POLYM. COMPOS., 37:802–809, 2016. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The graft copolymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) monomer onto natural rubber (NR) latex was successful using cumene hydroperoxide and tetraethylene pentamine as redox initiators. The grafting of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) on the NR particles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy and TEM. The NR‐g‐PHEA with various grafting percentages (0%, 8.7%, 14.3% and 18.7%) was compounded on a two‐roll mill with a sulfur vulcanization system. The effects of grafting percentage on the cure characteristics, dielectric properties, thermal properties and physical properties of NR‐g‐PHEA vulcanizates were investigated. It was found that increased grafting caused NR‐g‐PHEA vulcanizates to have reduced water contact angle, scorch time and cure time, while the dielectric constant and dissipation factor increased. The NR‐g‐PHEA vulcanizate with 8.7% grafting exhibited the highest delta torque (MH ? ML), crosslink density, tensile strength, moduli at 100%, 200% and 300% strains, and hardness, with insignificant loss of elongation at break in comparison to the other cases. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)‐grafted natural rubbers (NRs) were prepared to study the structure–property relationships. Syntheses were achieved by the photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate groups created beforehand in side positions on the NR chains. With this procedure, good control of the graft density and PMMA content could be obtained. Thermal, morphological, and mechanical properties of NR‐g‐PMMA copolymers were studied as a function of the NR/PMMA composition and graft density. NR‐g‐PMMAs containing 15–80% grafted PMMA showed characteristics of heterogeneous materials (characterized by two glass‐transition temperatures, those of PMMA and NR, in differential scanning calorimetry). Under these conditions, they developed the morphology of thermoplastic elastomers with PMMA nodules dispersed in the rubber matrix when the PMMA content was near 20%; conversely, they developed the morphology of softened thermoplastics with rubber nodules dispersed in PMMA when the PMMA content was near 80%. Graft copolymers containing about 20% PMMA remained essentially rubbery, but they were already different from pure NR. On the other hand, the thermal stability of NR wash improved after the introduction of PMMA grafts onto NR chains. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA) films were surface modified by gamma ray irradiation‐induced grafting of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP). The in vitro degradation behavior of polylactic acid grafting N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (PLA‐g‐PVP) copolymer was analyzed in terms of weight loss, molecular weight, and thermal properties. Grafting NVP significantly accelerated the degradation of PLA. The mass losses of the copolymers, which were less than that of pure PLA at the beginning of the degradation period, sharply accelerated with increasing degradation time. Moreover, the crystallization temperature decreased with increasing degradation time in the same graft ratio, and the degree of crystallinity increased. Cytotoxicity experiments and animal experiments in vivo were carried out to evaluate the biocompatibility of PLA‐g‐PVP copolymer. Varying graft ratios of PVP could control the degradation rate of copolymers, and thus broadening the applications of this material, such as in tissue engineering scaffolds, drug delivery, and prevention of postsurgical adhesion. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers of NR and PMMA (i.e., NR‐g‐PMMA) were prepared with the bipolar redox initiation system, using various percentages of molar ratios of NR/MMA at 95/5, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, and 60/40. It was found that the Mooney viscosity, shear stress, and shear viscosity of the NR‐g‐PMMA increased with an increase in the molar ratio of MMA used in the graft copolymerization. This may be attributed to an increasing trend of the chemical interaction between polar functional groups within the grafted PMMA molecules. Furthermore, a decreasing trend of storage moduli was observed with increasing molar ratios of MMA. The glass transition temperature was obtained from the tan δ curves. We found a slightly increasing trend of the Tg's with an increase in molar ratios of MMA used in the grafting reaction. The NR‐g‐PMMA was later compounded using TBBS as an accelerator. With an increase in molar ratios of MMA in the grafting reaction, we observed an increasing trend of minimum torque, maximum torque, cure time, and scorch time, but quite similar levels of torque difference and crosslink density. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the NR‐g‐PMMA gum vulcanizate increased with an increase in molar ratios of MMA, whereas the elongation at break decreased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(lactide) (PLA) is an interesting biodegradable polymer but has limited application because of its brittleness and low thermal stability. We found that both drawbacks of PLA were solved by forming stereocomplexes augmented with natural rubber (NR). Equal amounts of poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA) and poly(d‐ lactide) (PDLA) stereoisomers were blended to form a stereocomplex (St‐PLA). Varying amounts of NR (5–30% by weight) were added simultaneously to equal amounts of the stereo isomers by melt blending. FTIR and XRD spectra demonstrated that, despite the added NR, the stereocomplex structures were still generated and complete. Stereocomplex crystallinity decreased with increasing NR content, verified by DSC and XRD, as well as polarizing optical micrographs which showed fewer spherulites at higher NR content. Measured glass transition temperatures (Tg) of St‐PLA/NR blends were significantly lower than for neat St‐PLA, exhibiting shifts to as low as 46°C at 30%wt NR content, because of rubber dispersed in St‐PLA segments expanding the free volume and enhancing chain mobility. Thermal stability of the blends, estimated by TGA, showed desired results, for example, at the 50% weight loss point, the temperature of all St‐PLA/NR blends moved to higher temperatures than neat St‐PLA. Three different forms of natural rubber: maleated natural rubber (MNR), epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and natural rubber-graft-poly(methyl methacrylate) (NR-g-PMMA) were prepared. Degree of functional groups in rubber molecules was quantified using the integrated peak areas of 1H NMR. It was found that the modified rubbers with similar level of functionality had been successfully prepared. Thermoplastic natural rubber (TPNR) based on blending of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and various forms of rubber were then prepared using melt blending method. The properties of the blends were studied and compared together in relation to different types of natural rubbers prepared (i.e., unmodified NR, MNR, ENR and NR-g-PMMA). It was found that the blends with modified NR exhibited superior stiffness, entropy effect and damping factor compared to other blends with unmodified NR. This is attributed to the chemical interaction between the functional groups of modified NR molecules and polar functional groups in TPU molecules which facilitated higher interfacial adhesion between both phases. The chemical interaction was verified by ATR-FTIR and TSSR techniques. It was also found that the MNR/TPU blend showed the highest tensile modulus, mechanical and elastic properties with smallest and finer grain dispersion of co-continuous phase compared to ENR/TPU, NR-g-PMMA/TPU and unmodified NR/TPU blends, respectively. This might be due to higher chemical interactions between MNR and TPU phases. Furthermore, the incorporation of rubber did reduce hardness (i.e., <60 Shore A) with improvement of elasticity of the blends compared with the original TPU (i.e., ~85 Shore A).  相似文献

To improve the mechanical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), the possibility of combining PVC with elastomers was considered. Modification of natural rubber (NR) by graft copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) was carried out by emulsion polymerization by using redox initiator to provide an impact modifier for PVC. The impact resistance, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of St and MMA grafted NR [NR‐g‐(St‐co‐MMA)]/PVC (graft copolymer product contents of 5, 10, and 15%) blends were investigated as a function of the amount of graft copolymer product. It was found that the impact strength of blends was increased with an increase of the graft copolymer product content. DMA studies showed that NR‐g‐(St‐co‐MMA) has partial compatibility with PVC. SEM confirmed a shift from brittle failure to ductility with an increase graft copolymer content in the blends. The mechanical properties showed that NR‐g‐(St‐co‐MMA) interacts well with PVC and can also be used as an impact modifier for PVC. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The biodegradability, morphology, and mechanical thermal properties of composite materials composed of polylactide (PLA) and sisal fibers (SFs) were evaluated. Composites containing acrylic acid‐grafted PLA (PLA‐g‐AA/SF) exhibited noticeably superior mechanical properties because of greater compatibility between the two components. The dispersion of SF in the PLA‐g‐AA matrix was highly homogeneous as a result of ester formation and the consequent creation of branched and crosslinked macromolecules between the carboxyl groups of PLA‐g‐AA and hydroxyl groups in SF. Furthermore, with a lower melt temperature, the PLA‐g‐AA/SF composite is more readily processed than PLA/SF. Both composites were buried in soil to assess biodegradability. Both the PLA and the PLA‐g‐AA/SF composite films were eventually completely degraded, and severe disruption of film structure was observed after 6–10 weeks of incubation. Although the degree of weight loss after burial indicated that both materials were biodegradable even with high levels of SF, the higher water resistance of PLA‐g‐AA/SF films indicates that they were more biodegradable than those made of PLA. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of modification by epoxy‐(ethylene diamine) (EED) on (water hyacinth fiber)‐filled (low‐density polyethylene)/(natural rubber) (LDPE/NR/WHF‐EED) composites were studied. The LDPE/NR/WHF and LDPE/NR/WHF‐EED composites were prepared by using a Brabender Plasticorder. LDPE/NR/WHF‐EED showed higher tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break but lower molar sorption of toluene compared with LDPE/NR/WHF composites. The Fourier‐transform infrared radiation analysis indicated that the absorption peak at 1,648 cm?1 exhibited the C? N band. This C? N band was formed from the bond of the epoxy group and the amine group in the WHF‐g‐epoxy‐(ethylene diamine) (WHF‐EED). The scanning electron microscopic morphology of LDPE/NR/WHF‐EED composites displayed rougher surfaces and less fiber pull, which improved the interfacial adhesion among the fiber/matrix. J. Thermoplasticized starch (TPS) filled poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends are usually found to have low mechanical properties due to poor properties of TPS and inadequate adhesion between the TPS and PLA. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reinforcing effect of wood fibers (WF) on the mechanical properties of TPS/PLA blends. In order to improve the compatibility of wood with TPS/PLA blends, maleic anhydride grafted PLA (MA‐g‐PLA) copolymer was synthesized and used. TPS, TPS/PLA blends, and WF reinforced TPS/PLA composites were prepared by twin‐screw extrusion and injection molded. Scanning electron microscope and crystallinity studies indicated thermoplasticity in starch. WF at two different weight proportions, that is, 20% and 40% with respect to TPS content were taken and MA‐g‐PLA at 10% to the total weight was chosen to study the effect on mechanical properties. At 20% WF and 10% MA‐g‐PLA, the tensile strength exhibited 86% improvement and flexural strength exhibited about 106% improvement over TPS/PLA blends. Increasing WF content to 40% further enhanced tensile strength by 128% and flexural strength by 180% with respect to TPS/PLA blends. Thermal behavior of blends and composites was analyzed using dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
