Phenolic resin/carbon fiber (PF/CF) composites have good tribological properties; however, their extensive applications are limited because of the poor thermal conductivity of the phenolic resins. In this work, core‑shell particles of polyaniline-coated (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane-modified β-Si3N4 (m-SiN@PANI) were used to enhance the tribological, electrical, and thermal conductivity properties of a PF/CF composite. A core‑shell particle, consisting of m-SiN@PANI, was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry, X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope, and Transmission Electron Microscope. The friction, thermal, and electrical properties of the composites were characterized by multifunctional vertical friction testing, wear measurement testing, thermogravimetric analysis, thermal constant analysis, and electrical conductivity testing. Remarkably, the test results showed that compared with the wear surface of the PF/CF composite, that of the phenolic resin/(2.0 wt % m-SiN@PANI)/carbon fiber composite exhibited a smoother morphology. The results indicated that the addition of m-SiN@PANI effectively improved the thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, friction coefficient, and wear rate of the composites, which were 3.164 Wm−1 K−1, 5.33 × 10−6 S/m, 0.1681 and 1.13 × 10−8 mm3/Nm, respectively. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three-dimensional braided carbon fiber-reinforced nylon composites (C3D/MCN) were prepared in order to investigate the influence of oxidation of carbon fibers on the tribological properties of the C3D/MCN composites. Friction and wear tests of the C3D/MCN composites with untreated and treated carbon fabric were conducted. The characteristics of the carbon fiber, the interface strength, the hardness, and the worn surface morphologies of the C3D/MCN composites were analyzed. The results show that the specific surface area of treated carbon fiber was far higher than that of untreated carbon fiber and there formed a functional group of –C=O on the carbon fiber surface after air oxidation. The oxidation of the carbon fibers improved the interface strength between the carbon fibers and the matrix and had little effect on the hardness of the composites. The friction coefficient and wear rate of C3D/MCN composites with oxidized carbon fibers were apparently lower than those with untreated carbon fibers. In conclusion, the oxidation of the fibers showed good effects on the improvement of the interface strength and the tribological properties of the composites.  相似文献

Novel epoxy (EP) composite reinforced with three‐dimensional (3D) polyimide (PI) fiber felt (PI3D/EP) is first fabricated by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding. The tribological behaviors of pure EP and PI3D/EP composite under dry sliding and water lubricated condition are comparatively studied. Results indicate that both wear rates and friction coefficients of PI3D/EP composite are lower than those of pure EP. The wear resistance of PI3D/EP composite is 9.8 times higher than that of pure EP under dry sliding of 1.5 MPa and 0.76 m s?1 while a 27‐fold increase is achieved under water lubricated condition. The wear mechanisms of PI3D/EP composite are investigated based on tribological testing results and scanning electron microscopy observations. The PI fiber felt provides strong 3D structure supports to sustain most of the loads on the composite, improving the mechanical and tribological properties significantly. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The tribological behaviors of novel porous Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites under 1‐hexyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid lubricated condition were investigated. The effect of sliding velocity and applied load on the sweating tribological properties and the stability of lubricating oil film was also studied. Results indicated that when the sliding velocity was 0.69 m/s and the applied load was 250 N, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the ionic liquid lubricated porous sweating activated carbon fiber/polytetrafluoroethene/PEEK composites showed the minimum values, were 0.0197 and 4.145 × 10?15 m3/Nm, respectively. The friction coefficients fluctuated in a narrow range of 0.0162–0.0215. It was found that the porous sweating PEEK composites under ionic liquid lubricated condition showed good low‐friction and antiwear performance, especially under the condition of high sliding velocity and applied load. The formed transfer film due to the tribo‐chemical reaction as well as boundary lubricating film is effective in improving the carrying capacity and antiwear properties of the porous sweating PEEK composites. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites with good mechanical and tribological properties are in high demand for engineering applications. Toward this aim, the Mo–12Si–8.5B alloy with 2.5–10 wt% ZrB2 ceramic was prepared. The effects of the ZrB2 content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior were thoroughly investigated. The composites exhibited reduced density and enhanced hardness and strength owing to the dispersion strengthening of ZrB2 particles, thus resulting in improved wear resistance. The frictional properties are highly dependent on the ZrB2 content and counterpart materials. When coupled with GCr15 steel, it shows much slighter abrasive and adhesive wear; therefore, it presents a more preferable anti-wear performance. The wear rate of the composite with 7.5 wt% ZrB2 showed a minimum value of 2.71 × 10−7 mm3N−1m−1.  相似文献

A silicon oxide (SiO2) nanoparticles-decorated short carbon fiber (SCF) hybrid (SCF-SiO2) was designed to improve the weak interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix. Nano-SiO2 was grafted onto carbon fibers by introducing amino group and epoxy group on the surface of carbon fibers and SiO2, respectively. The chemical composition of SCF-SiO2 was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and energy-dispersive spectrometry, the microstructure of SCF-SiO2 were investigated by scanning electron microscope, and then the hybrid filler was introduced into Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK). Due to the strong interfacial interaction between filler and matrix, the mechanical and tribological properties of SCF-SiO2/PEEK composites were significantly better than SCF/PEEK composites. In order to further improve the tribological properties of the composites, micrometer-sized cenosphere (CS) particles were introduced into the aforementioned system to prepare multicomponent composites. The test results of friction and wear indicate that the CS/SCF-SiO2/PEEK composites have the optimal tribological properties. Compared with pure PEEK, the friction coefficient of CS/SCF-SiO2/PEEK composites under 200 N load decreases by 56.4% and the specific wear rate decreases by 87.4%. Meanwhile, the thermal decomposition temperature of CS/SCF-SiO2/PEEK composites is increased by 40 °C compared to pure PEEK. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The composites of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) filled with nanometer SiC of different proportions were prepared by compression molding. The tribological behaviors of the composites under lubrication of distilled water were investigated and compared with that under dry sliding, on an M‐200 friction and wear test rig, by running a plain carbon steel (AISI 1045 steel) ring against the composite block. The worn surfaces of nanometer SiC filled‐PEEK and the transfer film were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). As the results, nanometer SiC as the filler greatly improves the wear resistance of PEEK under dry sliding and distilled water lubrication, though the composites show different dependence of wear resistance on the filler content. Nanometer SiC‐filled PEEK showed signs of slight scuffing under distilled water lubrication, while a thin, uniform, and tenacious transfer film was formed on the surface of the counterpart steel ring. On the contrary, unfilled PEEK under lubrication of water showed signs of severe plowing and erosion, while the worn surface of the counterpart ring was very rough, and a discontinuous PEEK transfer film was formed. Thus, the different friction and wear behaviors of unfilled PEEK and nanometer SiC‐filled PEEK can be attributed to the different characteristics of the corresponding transfer films. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To improve the tribological properties of basalt‐fabric‐reinforced phenolic composites, solid lubricants of MoS2 and graphite were incorporated, and the tribological properties of the resulting basalt‐fabric composites were investigated on a model ring‐on‐block test rig under dry sliding conditions. The effects of the filler content, load, and sliding time on the tribological behavior of the basalt‐fabric composites were systematically examined. The morphologies of the worn surfaces and transfer films formed on the counterpart steel rings were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results reveal that the incorporation of MoS2 significantly decreased the friction coefficient, whereas the inclusion of graphite improved the wear resistance remarkably. The results also indicate that the filled basalt‐fabric composites seemed to be more suitable for friction materials serving under higher loads. The transfer films formed on the counterpart surfaces during the friction process made contributions to the reduction of the friction coefficient and wear rate of the basalt‐fabric composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and epoxy resin plays an important role in determining performance of carbon–epoxy composites. The objective of this research is to determine the effect of fiber surface treatment (oxidization in air) on the mechanical properties (flexural strength and modulus, shear and impact strengths) of three‐dimensionally (3D) braided carbon‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy (C3D/EP) composites. Carbon fibers were air‐treated under various conditions to improve fiber–matrix adhesion. It is found that excessive oxidation will cause formation of micropits. These micropits are preferably formed in crevices of fiber surfaces. The micropits formed on fiber surfaces produce strengthened fiber–matrix bond, but cause great loss of fiber strength and is probably harmful to the overall performance of the corresponding composites. A trade‐off between the fiber–matrix bond and fiber strength loss should be considered. The effectiveness of fiber surface treatment on performance improvement of the C3D/EP composites was compared with that of the unidirectional carbon fiber–epoxy composites. In addition, the effects of fiber volume fraction (Vf) and braiding angle on relative performance improvements were determined. Results reveal obvious effects of Vf and braiding angle. The friction coefficient and wear rate decreased with increases in the sliding speed and load, respectively. The tribological properties of the resulting composites sliding against GCr15 steel ring were investigated on a model ring‐on‐block test rig. The wear mechanisms were also comparatively discussed, based on scanning electron microscopic examination of the worn surface of the PI composites and the transfer film formed on the counterpart. Experimental results revealed that MoS2 and graphite as fillers significantly improved the wear resistance of the BFs‐reinforced polyimide (BFs/PI) composites. For the best combination of friction coefficient and wear rate, the optimal volume content of MoS2 and graphite in the composites appears to be 40 and 35%, respectively. It was also found that the tribological properties of the filled BFs/PI composites were closely related with the sliding conditions such as sliding speed and applied load. This investigation focuses on the effects of cenosphere fillers on tribological properties of carbon fiber reinforced PEEK composites. Dry sliding wear behavior of 15 wt % short carbon fiber (SCF) reinforced PEEK composites filled with 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt % cenosphere was reported in this study, pure PEEK and 15 wt % SCF reinforced PEEK composites were also prepared for comparative analysis. Friction and wear experiments were conducted on a ring-on-block apparatus under different loads (100–400 N). The experimental results showed that all the composites exhibited lower coefficient of friction and better wear resistance than the matrix resin under different load conditions. It is noted that 10 wt % of the cenosphere particles filled SCF reinforced PEEK composites show superior tribological properties when compared to the other composites in this study. The morphologies of the worn surface and the fracture surface were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and the transfer film was observed by optical microscope to understand the dominant wear mechanisms. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The composites of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) filled with micrometer‐sized Cu and Fe particles were prepared by compression molding. The friction and wear behaviors of the composites were examined on a pin‐on‐disc friction‐and‐wear tester by sliding PEEK‐based composites against tool steel at a sliding speed of 1.0 m s−1 and a normal load of 19.6N. Optical microscopic analysis of the transfer film and of the worn pin surfaces and wear debris was performed to investigate the wear mechanisms of the composites. It was found that Cu and Fe used as filler considerably decreased the wear rate of PEEK. A thin, uniform, and tenacious transfer film was formed when Cu was used as the filler, and a nonuniform and thick transfer film was formed when Fe was used as the filler. The transfer film played a key role in increasing the wear resistance of the PEEK composites. Plastic deformation was dominant for wear of PEEK–Cu, while abrasion and adhesion were dominant for wear of PEEK–Fe. Because of the strong affinity between Fe as filler and its identical counterpart in the counterface tool steel surface, the adhesion between the PEEK–Fe composite surface and the counterface tool steel surface was thus severe. Tribological properties of neat polyetherimide (PEI), glass, carbon fiber, and solid lubricants filled PEI composites are presented in this article. The aim of this study was to investigate the friction and wear properties of these composites under dry oscillating sliding condition at room temperature (RT) as well as at elevated temperature (120°C). The polymer specimens were made to oscillate against steel cylinder as a counterpart. The friction and wear properties of PEI and composites were strongly influenced by the temperature. Incorporation of carbon fiber in the PEI matrix has increased the wear rate at RT, while at elevated temperature this trend was opposite. Abrasive action of carbon fibers has severely damaged the counterpart and resulted in accelerated wear of the composite at RT. Solid lubricants filled (PTFE, MoS2, graphite) along with glass fiber is beneficial in improving the friction and wear performance of the PEI composite at RT, whereas at elevated temperature wear performance was deteriorated. Tribological performance of neat PEI and glass fiber composite was similar with each other at RT. Scanning electron micrographs and optical micrographs of the worn polymer specimens and the steel cylinders was used to study the possible wear mechanisms. The present test results were also compared with data available on the reciprocating wear of PEI and composites in the literature and trends have been reported. POLYM. Solid lubricants, that is, graphite flakes and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) powders, were incorporated with short carbon fibers into a poly(ether imide) matrix to improve the tribological performance. Wear tests were performed with a polymer pin against a mild steel counterpart at a constant sliding speed of 1 m/s under various temperatures and contact pressures. Composites filled with equilibrium contents of solid lubricants and short carbon fibers, that is, 10 vol % of each filler, exhibited the lowest wear rate and friction coefficient. The relatively lower concentration of solid lubricants adversely affected the wear resistance, whereas the friction coefficient did not vary significantly in comparison with the friction coefficient of the composites filled with only short carbon fibers. The improved tribological behavior was attributed to more continuous and effective friction films formed on the material pairs during sliding. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In recent years, three‐dimensionally (3D) braided composites have attracted a great deal of attention because of their high‐impact damage tolerance and fatigue life, superior fracture toughness, and so forth, and have been used in aeronautics, military, and transportation. These advantages make them strong candidates for osteosynthesis devices. In this study, 3D braided carbon fiber–epoxy (C3D/EP) composites were produced via a simple vacuum impregnation technique. The load‐deflection curve, mechanical properties, and influence of fiber volume fraction, braiding angle, and axial reinforcing fibers were examined to determine their suitability for internal fixation devices. It is found that the C3D/EP composites have excellent toughness and do not show brittleness when fractured because of their relatively high void content. The flexural, shear, and impact strengths of the C3D/EP composites are excellent. It was shown that a C3D/EP composite with a stiffness similar to load‐bearing bones can be made while maintaining enough strength. It is concluded that a relatively higher void content and braiding angle is more suitable for the C3D/EP composites from the viewpoint of requirements of fracture fixation materials. The moisture absorption behavior and changes in mechanical properties caused by moisture uptake were evaluated. Results show that absorbed moisture slightly decreases mechanical properties of the C3D/EP composites. Contrary to the unreinforced epoxy, the moisture absorption behavior of the C3D/EP composites cannot be described with Fick's law of diffusion, probably because of the presence of voids and/or 3D fiber structure. The tribological behaviors of Si3N4-hBN ceramic composites sliding against steels (austenitic stainless steel (ASS) and 45 steel) under dry friction conditions at different loads were investigated by using an MMW-1 type vertical universal friction and wear tester. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficients and wear rates first showed a decrease and then an increase with an increase in the load under dry friction conditions. The better tribological performance was exhibited by the SN10/ASS sliding pair under a load of 20 N (the friction coefficient was as low as 0.27 and the wear rates of both pin and disc had a magnitude of 10−6 mm3 N−1 m−1). This may be attributed to the formation of a black surface film (consisting of B2O3, SiO2, and Fe2O3). For the same sliding pair, when the load was 10 N, the dominating wear mechanism was abrasive wear. Hence, the friction coefficient was higher (0.7). When the load increased to 30 and 50 N, the wear mechanism of the SN10/ASS sliding pair was a combination of abrasive and adhesive wears, and higher friction coefficients (0.48 and 0.72 under loads of 30 and 50 N, respectively) were obtained. On the other hand, the contents of hBN also showed a significant impact on the tribological behaviors of the Si3N4-hBN/ASS sliding pairs. When the hBN content was less than 10%, the friction coefficients of the Si3N4-hBN/ASS sliding pairs decreased with an increase in the hBN content. On the other hand, at hBN contents of 10% or more, the friction coefficients of the sliding pairs increased with an increase in the hBN content. Under the same experimental conditions, the Si3N4-hBN/45 steel pairs showed poor tribological properties as compared with the Si3N4-hBN/ASS pairs.  相似文献

The dry sliding tribological characteristics of B4C-hBN ceramics with different contents of hBN against GCr15 bearing steel under two different test modes (upper disc on bottom pin test mode and upper pin on bottom disc test mode) have been evaluated using a pin-on-disc friction and wear tester. The experimental results show that, with increasing hBN content, the dry sliding tribological characteristics of B4C-hBN/GCr15 bearing steel pairs have different variation rules under two different test modes. Under upper disc on bottom pin test mode, with increasing hBN content, the friction coefficients of B4C-hBN/GCr15 bearing steel pairs decrease firstly and increase subsequently; however, under upper pin on bottom disc test mode, the friction coefficients of B4C-hBN/GCr15 bearing steel pairs increase continuously with increasing hBN content. In this paper, the possible reasons for these interesting results are most deeply discussed.  相似文献

A multiscale functional filler of micro–nano synergetic structure was successfully prepared via in-situ growth of silica (SiO2) on biomimetic dopamine modified carbon fiber (CF) surface. The CF-SiO2 hybrid as a reinforcement possessed lubricating and reinforcing effect to enhance tribological performance, thermal stability and thermomechanical property of epoxy (EP) composites. The micro–nano synergetic structure was of great importance for ameliorating the compatibility and interfacial adhesion between CF and EP matrix, which was conductive to transferring stress from matrix to fiber and alleviating stress concentration. It was concluded that the friction coefficient and wear rate of EP/CF-SiO2 were 0.382 and 1.12 × 10−5 mm3/N·m, that is, a decline of 58% and 2.5 times, respectively, compared to EP/CF. The CF-SiO2 hybrid exhibited excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear performance.  相似文献

Herein, the tribological performance, thermal and compression resistance behavior of polyimide (PI) reinforced by Fe2O3 decorated reduced graphene is systematically investigated. The remarkable synergistic effect of Fe2O3 decorated reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is demonstrated in its PI wear resistance, and PI/RGO/Fe2O3 composites show good thermal stability and much higher compression resistant ability than PI, PI/RGO, and PI/Fe2O3 composites when the filling contents are same. Additionally, the PI/RGO/Fe2O3 composites also exhibited ultra-wear-resistant properties under high load condition, and the lowest wear rate is 3.18 × 10−8 mm3N−1 m−1, which is an order of magnitude lower than that of pure PI. The investigation of its tribological mechanism also showed strong synergistic effect and interface force of Fe2O3 decorated RGO, which contribute to its high-performance friction-reducing behaviors. These findings give an inside view to Fe2O3 decorated RGO and its polyimide composites, and open an avenue for the graphene oxide (GO) based composite to act as compression wear-resisting solid fillers and lubricants when polymer composite with excellent compressive, thermal and tribological properties is required.  相似文献
