A divided visual field (DVF) procedure was used to investigate the scalp distribution of the event-related potential (ERP) repetition effect. ERPs were recorded from 27 scalp sites whilst subjects (n = 20) discriminated between words and non-words presented to either the left (LVF) or the right (RVF) visual field. A proportion of the words were repeated on the trial immediately following their first presentation. In two within-field repetition conditions the two encounters with a word occurred in the same visual field (LVF or RVF). In two across-field repetition conditions, the two encounters with a word occurred in different visual fields. For both words and non-words, task performance was better for RVF presentations than for LVF presentations. In each repetition condition there was a positive-going shift in the ERP elicited by repeated words compared to that elicited by words on their first presentation. This ERP repetition effect was equivalent in magnitude and lateralised to the right hemisphere to an equivalent degree in all four repetition conditions. It is suggested that the ERP effects largely reflect the processing of visual form thought to occur predominately in the right hemisphere.  相似文献

Results of 4 experiments indicate that both within-modality and case-specific visual priming for words are greater when test stimuli are presented initially to the right cerebral hemisphere (RH). In contrast, neither within-modality nor case-specific explicit memory for words is greater when stimuli are presented initially to the RH. Priming is measured using word-stem completion, and explicit memory is measured using word-stem cued recall. In both cases, Ss first rate how much they like words, and then word stems are presented briefly to the RH (in the left visual field) or to the left hemisphere (in the right visual field). Results suggest that at least 2 separate systems encode the visual representations that produce priming. The system that is more effective in the RH is better at representing form-specific information, whereas another system that is not more effective in the RH does not distinguish among distinct instances of word forms. Past inconsistencies in the occurrence of differential visual half-field Stroop effects were addressed in two experiments using a visual half-field presentation technique incorporating brief displays (100 ms) and a fixation task designed to ensure proper eye fixation at display onset. Experiment 1 used displays in which distractor words and color targets were presented in contralateral visual fields. Experiment 2 compared contralateral with ipsilateral displays where words and color targets appeared one above the other in the same visual field. Stroop effects were larger whenever a word occupied the right as opposed to the left visual field, regardless of whether the color target was left or right. Results are consistent with the idea that words are processed more efficiently or automatically in right visual field/left hemisphere presentations.  相似文献

Two priming experiments, using normal university students as subjects, independently projected low imagery primes and concrete target words to the left or right visual fields (LVF or RVF) to examine the merits of three spreading activation models of interhemispheric communication: (i) callosal relay of a semantically encoded prime; (ii) transfer of products activated as a result of the spread of activation; and (iii) direct connections between the hemispheres. The first experiment temporally separated pairs by a stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) of 250 ms and obtained strong support for the direct connections model. Priming effects were obtained only when the prime was projected to the RVF and the target to the LVF. The pattern of priming effects suggested that low imagery words projected to the left hemisphere can activate concrete associates in the right hemisphere via direct callosal connections between the two. In the second experiment, the SOA was increased to 450 ms. This time, RVF-RVF priming was obtained along with RVF-LVF priming. The findings are interpreted within a modification of Bleasdale's (1987) framework, where abstract/low imagery words and concrete/high imagery words are represented in separate subsystems in the left hemisphere lexicon. Support was also found for the view that the left hemisphere is comprised of a complex network of abstract and concrete words, while the right hemisphere operates as a subsidiary word processor, subserving linguistic processing with a limited, special purpose lexicon comprised of associative connections between concrete, imageable words (e.g., Zaidel, 1983a; Bradshaw, 1980). Interhemispheric communication in the priming procedure appears to occur at the semantic level, via direct connections between the hemispheres.  相似文献

Event-related potentials to critical verbs were measured as patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls read sentences word by word. Relative to their preceding context, critical verbs were (a) congruous, (b) incongruous and semantically unrelated to individual preceding words (pragmatic-semantic violations), (c) incongruous but semantically related to individual preceding words (animacy-semantic violations), or (d) syntactically anomalous. The N400 was modulated normally in patients, suggesting that semantic integration between individual words within sentences was normal in schizophrenia. The amplitude of the P600 to both syntactic and animacy-semantic violations was reduced in patients relative to controls. The authors suggest that, in schizophrenia, an abnormality in combining semantic and syntactic information online to build up propositional meaning leaves sentence processing to be primarily driven by semantic relationships between individual words. Cerebral lateralization in visual perception was investigated in 9 severe stuttering, 11 mild stuttering and 48 fluent speakers. The subjects were asked to identify words presented in the left or right visual field for 20 ms. Children responded by pointing to the exposed test word on a response card which contained four different words. Errors committed in the left and right visual fields were analyzed. The data showed a left hemisphere superiority in the processing of words in both the mild stutterers and the fluent speakers, but a right hemisphere advantage in the severe stutterers. The results suggest a close relationship between the severity of stuttering and functional brain organization.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze dynamic aspects of right hemisphere implementation in processing visual images. Two tachistoscopic, divided visual field experiments were carried out on a partial split-brain patient with no damage to the right hemisphere. In the first experiment, image generation performance for letters presented in the right visual field (/left hemisphere) was undeniably optimal. In the left visual field (/right hemisphere), performance was no better than chance level at first, but then improved dramatically across stimulation blocks, in each of five successive sessions. This was interpreted as revealing the progressive spontaneous activation of the right hemisphere's competence not shown initially. The aim of the second experiment was to determine some conditions under which this pattern was obtained. The experimental design contrasted stimuli (words and pictures) and representational activity (phonologic and visuo-imaged processing). The right visual field (/left hemisphere: LH) elicited higher performance than the left visual field (/right hemisphere, RH) in the three situations where verbal activity was required. No superiority could be found when visual images were to be generated from pictures: parallel and weak improvement of both hemispheres was observed across sessions. Two other patterns were obtained: improvement in RH performance (although LH performance remained superior) and an unexpectedly large decrease in RH performance. These data are discussed in terms of RH cognitive competence and hemisphere implementation.  相似文献

Right-handed Ss identified consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) nonsense syllables presented tachistoscopically. The CVC on each trial was presented to the left visual field-right hemisphere (LVF-RH), to the right visual field-left hemisphere (RVF-LH), or the same CVC was presented to both visual fields ( bilateral presentation). When recognition was incorrect, the pattern of errors was qualitatively different on LVF-RH and RVF-LH trials, suggesting that each cerebral hemisphere has its own preferred mode of processing the CVC stimuli. The qualitative pattern of errors on bilateral trials was identical to that obtained on LVF-RH trials. The bilateral results are described well by a model that assumes the mode of processing characteristic of the RH dominates on bilateral trials but is applied to both the LVF-RH and RVF-LH stimuli. In a visual hemifield emotional Stroop task, 54 women were asked to name the color of laterally flashed emotional and neutral words while ignoring their semantic content. Vocal reaction times for color naming were recorded. The participants exhibited significant emotional interference effects in the left visual field, which tended to be larger for negative words than for positive words. Participants with higher trait anxiety scores exhibited larger interference for positive words in the left relative to the right visual field. The outcome indicates that, in women, emotional Stroop interference arises in the right rather than in the left hemisphere, with a larger impact of negative than of positive words, and with trait anxiety modulating the lateralized interference for positive words. Cerebral asymmetries in lexical ambiguity resolution were studied. In 2 experiments, targets related to the dominant and subordinate meanings of ambiguous word primes were presented for lexical decision after a 750-ms stimulus onset asynchrony. Experiment 1 compared presentation of target words to the left visual field/right-hemisphere (LVF/RH), to the right visual field/left-hemisphere (RVF/LH), or after redundant bilateral visual field (BVF) presentation. Experiment 2 examined unilateral priming in the absence of a BVF condition. On unilateral trials, priming was observed for dominant meanings in both the LVF/RH and RVF/LH, whereas subordinate priming was obtained only in the RVF/LH. These results suggest a possible role of hemispheric interaction in the availability of ambiguous word meanings. BVF performance evidenced a bilateral redundancy gain and priming that resembled that obtained on RVF/LH trials. Additional BVF analyses were not consistent with a strict race model interpretation and appear to implicate hemispheric cooperation in the bihemisperic processing of lexical information.  相似文献

Automatic and postlexical semantic processing in the cerebral hemispheres was studied by presenting categorically related but nonassociated word pairs (e.g., TABLE-BED) to the left visual field (LVF) or to the right visual field (RVF) in semantic priming experiments. Experiment 1 examined automatic priming across stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) of 165 and 750 ms with a low proportion of related pairs and a low nonword ratio, employing a GO-NOGO lexical decision task. In contrast to an earlier view that a larger range of meanings is automatically activated in the right than in the left hemisphere, priming was observed in the RVF/left hemisphere only. SOA did not exert any effects. In Experiment 2, postlexical semantic matching of the prime and the target was encouraged by requiring subjects to respond to both of them at the same time. Now there was priming in the LVF, suggesting that a postlexical matching process works in the right hemisphere. The earlier studies showing a right hemisphere advantage in categorical priming are reinterpreted according to the postlexical right hemisphere hypothesis.  相似文献

Observers identified consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) nonsense syllables with the letters arranged horizontally. In each of 2 experiments, there were fewer errors when stimuli were presented to the right visual field (RVF) and left hemisphere (LH) than when stimuli were presented to the left visual field (LVF) and right hemisphere (RH), and the extent to which the number of last-letter errors exceeded the number of first-letter errors was greater on LVF/RH than on RVF/LH trials. When the same stimulus was presented simultaneously to both visual fields (Experiment 2), the qualitative error pattern was very similar to the pattern obtained on LVF/RH trials. These effects replicate results obtained in earlier CVC identification experiments with letters arranged vertically. However. when a single stimulus was presented in the center of the visual field (Experiment 1), so that the first letter of the CVC projected to the LVF/RH and the last letter projected to the RVF/LH, the error pattern was a mixture of the LVF/RH and RVF/LH patterns, as if each hemisphere took the lead for processing the letter it received directly. The electrophysiological correlates of recognition memory for new associations were investigated in two experiments. In both experiments subjects first studied unrelated word pairs. At test, they were presented with old words in the same pairing as at study (same pairs), old words in a different pairing from study (rearranged pairs), and pairs of new words. In Experiment 1 the test requirement was to discriminate between old and new pairs and, for any pair judged old, to then judge whether the pair was the same or rearranged. In Experiment 2 the requirement was merely to discriminate between old and new pairs. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded for correctly classified same, rearranged and new pairs. The ERPs elicited by same pairs exhibited a similar pattern of effects in both experiments. Relative to the ERPs to new pairs, these effects took the form of sustained positive shifts with two distinct scalp maxima, over the left temporo-parietal and right frontal scalp respectively. ERPs to rearranged pairs showed effects which were similar in scalp topography, but markedly smaller in magnitude. This pattern of ERP effects closely resembles that found previously for test items defined as recollected on the basis of their attracting a successful source judgement. The findings therefore suggest that associative recognition memory shares some of the recollective processes that are engaged by the requirement to retrieve contextual information about a study episode. The findings from Experiment 2 indicate that the processes associated with the recollection of associated pairs are engaged regardless of whether the retrieval of associative information is an explicit task requirement.  相似文献

Bilateral presentations of words, 1 in the left visual hemifield (LVF) and 1 in the right (RVF), are used widely in studies of hemispheric asymmetry. However, although words shown centrally (i.e., nonlaterally) produce perceptual interactions in which 1 word alters the perceived identity of the other, perceptual interactions between bilaterally presented words have never been reported. To investigate this issue, the authors used brief, bilateral displays of words (e.g., romp-ramp) presented simultaneously. An eye tracker and forced-choice task ensured appropriate presentation and testing. Report accuracy was greatest for RVF words. However, this was accompanied by perceptual interactions that occurred almost exclusively in responses to LVF words, indicating that RVF words often altered the perceived identity of LVF words but not vice versa. Three experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of contextual constraint on lexical ambiguity resolution in the cerebral hemispheres. A cross-modal priming variant of the divided visual field task was utilized in which subjects heard sentences containing homonyms and made lexical decisions to targets semantically related to dominant and subordinate meanings. Experiment 1 showed priming in both hemispheres of dominant meanings for homonyms embedded in neutral sentence contexts. Experiment 2 showed priming in both hemispheres of dominant and subordinate meanings for homonyms embedded in sentence contexts that biased a central semantic feature of the subordinate meaning. Experiment 3 showed priming of dominant meanings in the left hemisphere (LH), and priming of the subordinate meaning in the right hemisphere (RH) for homonyms embedded in sentences that biased a peripheral semantic feature of the subordinate meaning. These results are consistent with a context-sensitive model of language processing that incorporates differential sensitivity to semantic relationships in the cerebral hemispheres.  相似文献

Hemispheric asymmetry was examined for Urdu-English bilinguals identifying printed Urdu words and nonwords, separated Urdu letter strings, digits, and English nonwords. In all cases, fewer errors occurred when stimuli were presented to the right visual field/left hemisphere (RVF/LH) than to the left visual field/right hemisphere (LVF/RH). Qualitative error patterns suggested that separated Urdu letter strings were processed more serially than Urdu letter strings joined to form words or pronounceable nonwords and more serially on RVF/LH than on LVF/RH trials. This qualitative laterality effect is similar to that found for Hebrew and Arabic but opposite that found for English and suggests that the qualitative manner of processing printed verbal material is influenced by language-specific factors such as scanning direction, orthographic-to-phonological mapping rules, and morphology. Reports a failure to find a repetition deficit in recall following the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) of words within sentences, using adjectives rather than nouns as the critical items. In a series of experiments that ruled out participant and procedural differences as the source of the failure, both word class and list context were found to moderate the repetition deficit, but grammatical necessity did not. The presence in the list of sentences in which the repeated adjectives were separated by more than three words not only eliminated the repetition deficit for the recall of those sentences but also for the recall of sentences in which the repeated adjectives were separated by three or fewer words. However, although substantially reduced, a repetition deficit with noun-based materials was still found in this list context. Matching the adjective-based sentences with the noun-based sentences in sentence length and position of the critical items revealed that the moderating effect of word-class on the repetition deficit was mediated by the biases in sentence structure that using different word classes tend to induce. Word recognition thresholds and rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) reading rates for both unrelated words and meaningful sentences were examined across the visual field. Both word recognition thresholds and RSVP reading rates for unrelated words can be equated across the visual field by an increase in size scale. RSVP reading rates for meaningful sentences cannot be equated across the visual field, with the fovea demonstrating a qualitative superiority over the periphery, irrespective of scale. The results suggest that the early visual machinery which underlies word recognition is the same across the visual field apart from a change in scale, whilst the periphery is qualitatively inferior to the fovea at interpreting sentences with meaning.  相似文献

Hemispheric processing of visually presented words and pictures was examined in 3 groups of Ss with mean ages of 8 yrs 8 mo, 12 yrs 3 mo, and 27 yrs 9 mo (154 Ss). Pictorial or symbolic stimuli were presented singly to either the right or left visual hemifield. Ss had to decide whether the 1st stimulus in a pair matched the 2nd stimulus. The major results were that (a) age groups differed in the strength of lateral differences, and (b) for all age groups, the right hemisphere was significantly faster in processing unmatched stimuli. Results suggest that lateral specialization of the left hemisphere is not complete until adolescence and that over the age range tested, the left hemisphere becomes progressively more specialized for the processing of matched data. Several studies have claimed that hemispheric asymmetries affect word recognition right up to the point of fixation because each fovea is split precisely at its vertical midline and information presented either side of this midline projects unilaterally to different, contralateral hemispheres. To investigate this claim, four-letter words were presented to the left or right of fixation, either close to fixation entirely in foveal vision (0.15, 0.25, and 0.35 degrees from fixation) or further from fixation entirely in extrafoveal vision (2.00, 2.10, and 2.20 degrees from fixation). Fixation location and stimulus presentation were controlled using an eye-tracker linked to a fixation-contingent display and performance was assessed using a forced-choice task to suppress confounding effects of guesswork. A left hemisphere advantage was observed for words presented in extrafoveal locations but no hemisphere advantage (left or right) was observed for words presented in any foveal location. These findings support the well-established view that words encountered outside foveal vision project to different, contralateral hemispheres but indicate that this division for word recognition occurs only outside the fovea and provide no support for the claim that a functional split in hemispheric processing exists at the point of fixation.
