Percutaneous transhepatic radiomanometry of the bile ducts (PTC-manometry) (author's transl)

Method and first results of the PTC-manometry are shown in 32 cases. Low residual pressures in bilio-digestive anastomosis and high results both in incomplete bile obstruction and in anicteric patients with incomplete stenosis of the common bile duct and with papillary stenosis suggest a clinical importance. In connection with clinical symptoms and x-ray results it is possible to give informations already preoperatively which we could got only by intraoperative radiomanometry till now. There was no correlation between the maximum size of the common bile duct and the residual pressure.     

Dumping-prophylaxis (author's transl)

The dumping syndrome is due to a vigorous reflex distension of the jejunum, caused by the stomach violently evacuating its contents. The aim of treatment is to overcome the drastic evacuation by restoring the rhythmic peristalsis of the stomach (eukinetics). This can be achieved by a special diet. Every meal should begin with well chewed solids (pulp) and avoid all fluids. With a well organised medical staff a complete success can be achieved. Surgical measures in Dumping can be avoided.     

Conisation and fertility (author's transl)

Long-term observation by defined criteria of 121 women who had undergone conisation gave 56 pregnancies in 49 patients. The pregnancy rate established, with due consideration of contraception, other causes of sterility, and sexual activity, was about 75 per cent. Twenty-five deliveries were analysed. Forty per cent of them were premature births, with some of the newborns being of extremely low birth weight, which supported the conclusion that pregnancies following conisation should be given high-risk rating and, generally, lead to hospitalisation of the women concerned.     

Dysphonia in acromegaly (author's transl)

Acromegalic dysphonia is described in a series of 80 acromegalic patients. Subjective dysphonia was observed in most patients, objective dysphonia, however, wasnoted in only 50% of the cases. The patients with objective dysphonia usually had progenia, moderate to high acromegalic activity and duration of disease of more than five years. The different factors of importance for the development of acromegalic dysphonia are summarized.     

Arabinosyladenine in ophthalmology (author's transl)

Arabinosyladenine (Ara-A) is an antiviral compound employed for ophthalmological lesions in the form of a 3 p. cent ointment. This purine nucleoside has been shown to possess antiviral activity against several ADN viruses, including herpes simplex virus, but it is ineffective against ARN viruses. Its action in superficial herpetic keratitis is comparable with that of idoxuridine, tolerance to the two compounds being almost identical. Ara-A is of value for treating superficial keratitis lesions not responding to idoxuridine. The weak intra-ocular penetration of Ara-A explains its lack of efficacy in stromal keratitis and herpetic kerato-uveitis, forms in which certain analogues of Ara-A could be beneficial.     

Sarcosporidiosis in sheep (author's transl)

Histological examination of the masseter muscle, diaphragm, oseophagus and heart showed that about 18 per cent of approximately eight-month-old sheep in the Netherlands were infected with Sarcocystis. The masseter muscle obviously was the site of predilection.     

Yersinia arthritis (author's transl)

Yersinia arthritis is an acute oligo- or, more rarely, polyarthritis. It occurs after pyrexic diarrhoea of several days, often associated with right-sided lower abdominal pain. The disease is caused by Yersinia enterocolitica and four such cases, confirmed serologically in three, are described. In one case fluid from the knee-joint was antibody-positive. It was not possible to culture the causative organism, probably because all patients had previously been treated with an antibiotic. Rheumatic fever and Reiter's disease must be considered in the differential diagnosis. Because pharyngitis, transitory ECG changes and conjunctivitis may occur in the early stages of Yersinia arthritis, the diagnosis may be missed. Prognosis of Yersinia arthritis is good, with complete cure within weeks or months. Demonstration of HLA-B 27 in all four cases points to a genetic disposition.
