In this research, the overall heat transfer coefficient of Al2O3/water–mono ethylene glycol (MEG) nanofluids is investigated experimentally in a car radiator under laminar flow conditions. The experimental rig developed is similar to the automotive cooling system. The stable nanofluid used is prepared by a two‐step method. Ultrasonication is done for proper dispersion of 20 nm Al2O3 nanoparticle in carrier fluid water and MEG mixture with 50:50 proportions by volume. The experimental study showed that use of a nanofluid enhances the overall heat transfer coefficient as compared to the base fluid. In this study as the nanoparticle volume fraction increases from 0% to 0.8%, the overall heat transfer coefficient also increases. It was observed that as the nanofluid inlet temperature increased from 65 °C to 85 °C, the overall heat transfer coefficient decreased. It was found that using a 0.2% volume fraction Al2O3/water–MEG nanofluid can enable a 36.69 % reduction in surface area of the radiator.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to investigate the thermal performance of an L-shaped grooved heat pipe with cylindrical cross section, which contained 0.5 wt% water-based Al2O3 nanofluid as the working fluid. The transient performance of the heat pipe and the effect of cooling water temperature on the heat transfer characteristics of the heat pipe were investigated. The outer diameter and the length of the heat pipe were 6 mm and 220 mm, respectively. Experimental results revealed that the temperature of the cooling water has a significant effect on the thermal resistance of the heat pipe containing nanofluids as its working fluid. By increasing the cooling water temperature from 5°C to 27.5°C, the thermal resistance decreases by approximately 40%. At the same charge volume, test results indicated an average reduction of 30% in thermal resistance of heat pipes with nanofluid as compared with heat pipe containing pure water. For transient conditions, unsteady state time for nanofluids was reduced by approximately 28%, when compared with water as the working fluid.  相似文献

This work addresses the effect of temperature on the thermophysical properties (i.e., density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and specific heat capacity) of alumina–water nanofluid over a wide temperature range (25°C–75°C). Low concentrations (0–0.5% v/v) of alumina nanoparticles (40 nm size) in distilled water were used in this study. The pressure drop and the effective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids were also estimated for different power inputs and at different flow rates corresponding to Reynolds numbers in the range of 1500–6000. The trends in variation of thermophysical properties of nanofluids with temperature were similar to that of water, owing to their low concentrations. However, the density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity of nanofluids increased, while the specific heat capacity decreased with increasing the nanoparticle concentration. The convective heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluid and the pressure drop along the test section increased with increasing the particle concentration and flow rate of nanofluid. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficient increases, while the pressure drop decreases slightly with increasing the power input. This is because of the fact that increasing power input to heater increases the bulk mean temperature of nanofluids, resulting in a decreased viscosity. The prepared nanofluids were found to be more effective under turbulent flow than in transition flow.  相似文献

In the present study, experimental and analytical thermal performance of automobile radiator using nanofluids is investigated and compared with performance obtained with conventional coolants. Effect of operating parameters and nanoparticle concentration on heat transfer rate are studied for water as well as CuO/EG‐water based nanofluid analytically. The results are presented in the form of graphs showing variations of net heat transfer rate for various coolant flow rate, air velocity, and source temperature for various CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids. Experimental results indicate that with the increase in coolant flow rate and air velocity, heat transfer rate increases, reaches maximum and then decreases. Experimental investigation of a radiator is carried out using CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids. Results obtained by experimental work and analytical MATLAB code are almost the same. Maximum absolute error in water and air side is within 12% for all flow condition and coolant fluids. Nusselt number of nanofluid is calculated using equation number 33[9]. The results obtained from experimental work using 0.2% volume CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids are compared with the results obtained from MATLAB code. The results show that the maximum error in the outlet temperature of the coolant and air is 12% in each case. Thus MATLAB code can be used for different concentration of nanofluids to study the effect of operating parameters on heat transfer rate. Thus MATLAB code developed is valid for given heat exchanger applications. From the results obtained by already validated MATLAB code, it is concluded that increase in coolant flow rate, air velocity, and source temperature increases the heat transfer rate. Addition of nanoparticles in the base fluid increases the heat transfer rate for all kind of base fluids. Among all the nanofluid analyzed in this study, water‐based nanofluid gives highest value of heat transfer rate and is recommended for the heat exchanger applications under normal operating conditions. Maximum enhancement is observed for ethylene glycol‐water (4:6) mixture for 1% volume concentration of CuO is almost equal to 20%. As heat transfer rate increases with the use of nanofluids, the heat transfer area of the radiator can be minimized.  相似文献

The present study exemplifies the comprehensive thermal analysis to compare and contrast ammonia‐lithium nitrate (NH3‐LiNO3) and ammonia‐sodiumthiocynate (NH3‐NaSCN) absorption systems with and without incorporation of nanoparticles. A well‐mixed solution of copper oxide/water (CuO/H2O) nanofluid is considered inside a flat‐plate collector linked to an absorption chiller to produce 15‐kW refrigeration at ?5°C evaporator temperature. Enhancements in heat transfer coefficient, thermal efficiency, and useful heat gain of the collector are evaluated, and the effect of these achievements on the performance of both absorption chillers have been determined for different source temperatures. A maximum 121.7% enhancement is found in the heat transfer coefficient with the application of the nanofluid at 2% nanoparticle concentration. The maximum coefficient of performance observed for the NH3‐NaSCN chiller is 0.12% higher than that for the NH3‐LiNO3 chiller at 0°C evaporator temperature. Contradictory to this, the average system coefficient of performance of the NH3‐LiNO3 absorption system has been found 5.51% higher than that of the NH3‐NaSCN system at the same evaporator temperature. Moreover, the application of the nanofluid enhanced the performance of the NH3‐NaSCN and NH3‐LiNO3 systems by 2.70% and 1.50%, respectively, for lower generator temperature and becomes almost the same at higher temperatures, which altogether recommends the flat‐plate collector–coupled NH3‐LiNO3 absorption system be integrated with a nanofluid.  相似文献

The heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of TiO2 and SiO2 water based nanofluids flowing in a circular tube under turbulent flow are investigated experimentally under constant heat flux boundary condition. TiO2 and SiO2 nanofluids with an average particle size of 50 nm and 22 nm respectively are used in the working fluid for volume concentrations up to 3.0%. Experiments are conducted at a bulk temperature of 30 °C in the turbulent Reynolds number range of 5000 to 25,000. The enhancements in viscosity and thermal conductivity of TiO2 are greater than SiO2 nanofluid. However, a maximum enhancement of 26% in heat transfer coefficients is obtained with TiO2 nanofluid at 1.0% concentration, while SiO2 nanofluid gave 33% enhancement at 3.0% concentration. The heat transfer coefficients are lower at all other concentrations. The particle concentration at which the nanofluids give maximum heat transfer has been determined and validated with property enhancement ratio. It is observed that the pressure drop is directly proportional to the density of the nanoparticle.  相似文献

This research work discusses the heat transfer improvement in a tractor radiator with nanosized particles of CuO with water as base fluid. The nano materials and its suspension in fluids as particles have been the subject of intensive study worldwide recently since pioneering researchers recently discovered the anomalous thermal behavior of these fluids. The engine cooling in heavy vehicles is an important factor for their performance in the intended application. Here, the tractor engine radiator cooling is enhanced by the nanofluid mechanism of heat transfer for its improved performance in agricultural work. Through the improvement of tractor engine cooling through the radiator a greater area can be ploughed and cultivated within a short time span. Heat transfer in automobiles is achieved through radiators. In this research work an experimental and numerical investigation for the improved heat transfer characteristics of a radiator using CuO/water nanofluid for 0.025 and 0.05% volume fraction is done with an inlet temp of 50 °C to 60 °C under the turbulent flow regime (8000 ≤ Re ≤ 25000). The overall heat transfer coefficient decreases with an increase in nanofluid inlet temperature of 50 °C to 60°C. The experimental results of the heat transfer using the CuO nanofluid is compared with the numerical values. The results in this work suggest that the best heat transfer enhancement can be obtained compared with the base fluid by using a system with CuO/ water nanofluid‐cooled radiators.  相似文献

Natural convection inside a triangular solar collector is investigated numerically for different nanofluids and hybrid nanofluids in this study. The individual effects of Al2O3–water, carbon nanotubes (CNT)–water, and Cu–water nanofluids are observed for different solid volume fractions of nanoparticles (0%–10%). Three types of hybrid nanofluids are prepared using different ratios of Al2O3, CNT, and Cu nanoparticles in water. A comparison is made varying the Rayleigh numbers within laminar range (103–106) for different tilt angles (0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°) of the solar collector. The inclined surface of the triangular solar collector is isothermally cold and the bottom wall (absorber plate) is isothermally hot, whereas the vertical wall with respect to the absorber plate is considered adiabatic. Average Nusselt numbers along the hot wall for different parameters are observed. Streamlines and isotherm contours are also plotted for different cases. Dimensionless governing Navier–Stokes and thermal energy conservation equations are solved by Galerkin weighted residual finite element method. Better convective heat transfer is found for higher Rayleigh number, solid volume fraction, and tilt angle. In the case of hybrid nanofluid, increasing the percentage of the nanoparticle that gives better heat transfer performance individually results in enhancing natural convection heat transfer inside the enclosure.  相似文献

Numerical study has been carried out on the laminar forced convection flow of nanofluids in a wide rectangular microchannel. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of gold and of single-walled carbon (SWCNT) nanofluids are investigated in order to find an efficient and cost-effective heat transfer fluid. The effects of nanoparticle volume concentration and of spherical and cylindrical particulate sizes on the conjugate heat transfer performance of the microchannel are reported. The effective thermal conductivity of a nanofluid is evaluated on the basis of particle sphericity by considering the volume and surface area of the nanoparticles. The average convective heat transfer coefficient increases with increase in Reynolds number and volume concentration. Moreover, sphericity-based thermal conductivity evaluation showed that increasing the length of the SWCNT nanoparticle has significant effect on the heat transfer performance, concluding that axial heat conduction dominates the radial heat conduction within the nanoparticle. The carbon nanofluid is identified as an optimized heat transfer fluid with better heat transfer characteristics in comparison with the gold nanofluid. It also reduces the cost of the working fluid. The variations in the interface temperature between solid and fluid regions are reported for nanofluids with different concentrations at different Reynolds numbers. The diameter and length of the SWCNT nanoparticle show a significant effect on heat transfer characteristics.  相似文献

Novel high‐temperature heat transfer fluids (HTFs) with incorporated phase change nanomaterials were synthesized and tested for heat transfer and thermal energy storage. The advanced thermal properties were achieved by preparing a nanofluid consisting of core/shell silica encapsulated tin (Sn/SiO2) nanoparticles dispersed in a synthetic HTF Therminol 66 (TH66) at loadings up to 5 vol%. Tin nanoparticles were synthesized by modified polyole reduction method followed by sol–gel silica encapsulation process. The measured increase in thermal conductivity of the nanofluid (~13% at 5 vol%) was in agreement with Maxwell's effective medium theory. Latent heat of phase change during melting of Sn core added ~11% increase to the volumetric thermal energy storage of the nanofluid when cycled in between 100°C and 270°C. The value could be further improved if thermal cycling is conducted in a narrower temperature range. The experimental results demonstrated dual functionality of the engineered nanofluids as desired for Concentrated Solar Power systems. Viscosity and stability of the nanofluids as well as thermal stability of core/shell nanomaterials) were investigated in a wide temperature range to obtain a perspective on any additional pumping power requirements for the nanofluid over the base fluid. In this study, Shell and tube heat exchanger (STHX) with 22% cut segmental baffles and helical baffles with 20°, 30°, 40° inclination angles are considered for three-dimensional CFD analysis using the ANSYS FLUENT tool to investigate the performance of STHX. OHTC and comprehensive performance index are higher for 40° helical baffles when compared to segmental baffle and 20°, 30° helical baffle heat exchangers with water as working fluid. Hence, further investigations are carried out for 40° helical baffle heat exchangers. Numerical investigations are extended with nanofluids (Al2O3, CuO, and SiO2) at 1%, 3%, and 5% volume concentrations for each nanofluid. Under the same mass flow rates, 40° helical baffles with Al2O3 nanofluid as working fluid provided better heat transfer rates when compared to the other two nanofluids and base fluid. Also, the authors noticed that the 5% volume (vol) concentration nanofluids provided better heat transfer enhancements when compared to 1%, 3% volume concentrations, and base fluid. Enhancements (10.33%–8.24%) from lower to the higher mass flow rate in 40° HB with Al2O3 nanofluid at 5% volume concentration are observed when compared to water as base fluid.  相似文献

Enhancement of heat transfer by nanofluids is reported by a large number of researchers. In this study, numerical and experimental investigation of heat transfer and flow characteristics of Al2O3/water nanofluid flowing in a spiral-coil tube is performed for various flow conditions. The spiral-coil tube is immersed horizontally in a hot water bath maintained at 60°C. Experiments are conducted in a turbulent flow regime using distilled water and nanofluid with 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% particle volume concentrations. Also, a computational fluid dynamics methodology is used to simulate heat transfer and flow characteristics corresponding to the experimental measurements and for further flow conditions. Simulation results are compared with the experimental measurements, and 85% agreement between the results is observed. The results showed that convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid is enhanced up to 61% compared with that of the base fluid. Based on the experimental measurements, a new correlation is developed to predict convection heat transfer from nanofluids in spiral-coil tubes.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics of γ-Al2O3/water and TiO2/water nanofluids were measured in a shell and tube heat exchanger under turbulent flow condition. The effects of Peclet number, volume concentration of suspended nanoparticles, and particle type on the heat characteristics were investigated. Based on the results, adding of naoparticles to the base fluid causes the significant enhancement of heat transfer characteristics. For both nanofluids, two different optimum nanoparticle concentrations exist. Comparison of the heat transfer behavior of two nanofluids indicates that at a certain Peclet number, heat transfer characteristics of TiO2/water nanofluid at its optimum nanoparticle concentration are greater than those of γ-Al2O3/water nanofluid while γ-Al2O3/water nanofluid possesses better heat transfer behavior at higher nanoparticle concentrations.  相似文献

The heat transfer effectiveness of nanofluids is adversely affected by the delay in convection onset. The lesser effectiveness, when compared to that of base fluid, is observed in a range of nanofluid layer thickness. The heat transfer coefficient of water–Al2O3 nanofluid can be enhanced by sustaining the equilibrium between Rayleigh number, temperature, particle volume fraction, and enclosure aspect ratio. In this paper, the specific correlation of fluid layer thickness and the onset of convection, which can significantly dominate the heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids are investigated using the concept of critical Rayleigh number. The water layer thickness for convection onset is first experimentally assessed for different real-life heat flux densities. It is then performed for Al2O3–water nanofluid for varying volume fractions. With the increase in volume fraction even though thermal conductivity increases, the overall heat transfer enhancement of the nanofluid is reduced. Temperature involved (heat flux density), the volume fraction of the nanofluid used, nanofluid layer thickness (space availability for the cooling system), and mass of the nanoparticle influence heat transfer enhancement. A higher volume fraction may not always result in enhancement of heat transfer as far as nanofluids are concerned.  相似文献

Heat transfer enhancement capabilities of coolants with suspended metallic nanoparticles inside typical radial flow cooling systems are numerically investigated in this paper. The laminar forced convection flow of these nanofluids between two coaxial and parallel disks with central axial injection has been considered using temperature dependent nanofluid properties. Results clearly indicate that considerable heat transfer benefits are possible with the use of these fluid/solid particle mixtures. For example, a Water/Al2O3 nanofluid with a volume fraction of nanoparticles as low as 4% can produce a 25% increase in the average wall heat transfer coefficient when compared to the base fluid alone (i.e., water). Furthermore, results show that considerable differences are found when using constant property nanofluids (temperature independent) versus nanofluids with temperature dependent properties. The use of temperature-dependent properties make for greater heat transfer predictions with corresponding decreases in wall shear stresses when compared to predictions using constant properties. With an increase in wall heat flux, it was found that the average heat transfer coefficient increases whilst the wall shear stress decreases for cases using temperature-dependent nanofluid properties.  相似文献

Three concentrations of 0.2, 0.6, and 1.0 vol.% Copper/25 nm and silica/22 nm nanofluids are prepared in a base liquid glycerol–water mixture of 30:70 ratio by volume (GW70). The thermophysical properties of Cu and SiO2 nanofluids are determined with a TPS500S hot disc thermal analyzer and Brookfield viscometer in the temperature range of 20–80°C. The maximum enhancement in Cu and SiO2 nanofluid viscosity (63.4%, 35.7%), thermal conductivity (100.4%, 71.3%), and density (7.5%, 1.5%) while specific heat (7.8%, 2.3%) determined for 1.0% concentration at 80°C compared to base liquid GW70. Heat transfer experiments are conducted in a short-length double pipe heat exchanger. The flow rates resulted in the lamifnar entry length region. A maximum enhancement in the overall heat transfer coefficient (HTC; 25.0%, 19.7%) and convective HTC (46.2%, 34.8%), respectively for Cu and SiO2 nanofluids is estimated at 1.0% concentration compared to base liquid at a bulk temperature of 35°C.  相似文献

This study presents the effect of silver nanofluid on thermal performance of inclined screen mesh heat pipe in cooling applications. Four cylindrical copper heat pipes containing two layers of screen mesh were fabricated and tested with distilled water and water based silver nanofluids with mass concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75% as working fluids. The experiments were performed at four inclination angles of 0°, 30°, 6° and 90°. The main focus of this study is to investigate inclined heat pipe performance with nanofluid. Experimental results indicate that the thermal performance of heat pipes was improved with nanofluids compared to water and thermal resistance of the heat pipes decreased with the increase of nanoparticle concentration. Moreover, the thermal performance of the heat pipes at inclination angle of 60° is found to be higher than other tested inclination angles, which shows the effect of gravity on heat pipe performance.  相似文献

Nanofluid is a new type of heat transfer fluid with superior thermal performance characteristics, which is very promising for thermal engineering applications. This paper presents new findings on the thermal conductivity, viscosity, density, and specific heat of Al2O3 nanoparticles dispersed into water and ethylene glycol based coolant used in car radiator. The nanofluids were prepared by the two-step method by using an ultrasonic homogenizer with no surfactants. Thermal conductivity, viscosity, density, and specific heat have been measured at different volume concentrations (i.e. 0 to 1 vol.%) of nanoparticles and various temperature ranges (i.e. from 10 °C to 50 °C). It was found that thermal conductivity, viscosity, and density of the nanofluid increased with the increase of volume concentrations. However, specific heat of nanofluid was found to be decreased with the increase of nanoparticle volume concentrations. Moreover, by increasing the temperature, thermal conductivity and specific heat were observed to be intensified, while the viscosity and density were decreased.  相似文献

This paper discusses the impact of using various types of nanofluids on heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in triangular shaped microchannel heat sink (MCHS). In this study, an aluminum MCHS performance is examined using water as a base fluid with different types of nanofluids such as Al2O3, Ag, CuO, diamond, SiO2, and TiO2 as the coolants with nanoparticle volume fraction of 2%. The three-dimensional steady, laminar flow and heat transfer governing equations are solved using the finite volume method. It is inferred that diamond-H2O nanofluid has the lowest temperature and the highest heat transfer coefficient, while Al2O3-H2O nanofluid has the highest temperature and the lowest heat transfer coefficient. SiO2-H2O nanofluid has the highest pressure drop and wall shear stress while Ag-H2O nanofluid has the lowest pressure drop and wall shear stress among other nanofluid types. Based on the presented results, diamond-H2O and Ag-H2O nanofluids are recommended to achieve overall heat transfer enhancement and low pressure drop, respectively, compared with pure water.  相似文献

TiO2/water nanofluid is used together with a ribbed tube for heat transfer augmentation. This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation to study the influence of the ribs' pitch distance and ribbed tube configuration on heat transfer using TiO 2 nanofluid in a turbulent regime with Reynolds numbers of 5000‐40 000. Meanwhile, the fluid properties are assumed to be constant with temperature under uniform heat flux. The average nanoparticle size is 50 nm and volume fractions of 0% to 1% are adopted. The study is accomplished by using the finite volume method, and its objective involves finding a low friction factor and high heat transfer enhancement in the presence of TiO 2/water nanofluids. In comparison with the plain tube, a helical ribbed tube provides higher performance evaluation criteria (about 2.0%), while circumferentially ribbed tube provides 1.9% and longitudinal ribbed tube provides 1.88%. The helical ribbed tubes with a 5.89 mm pitch distance gave higher turbulent kinetic energy due to a stronger swirl intensity, resulting in a thinner thermal boundary layer and a higher Nusselt number with uniform distribution. The nonlinear models of friction factor and Nusselt number have been predicted with a maximum deviation of ±3% and ±2%, respectively.  相似文献
