Process Control is a course that needs a thorough understanding of how the different unit operations work and what are the implications of changing operation variables in a process. This paper presents how education innovation can help students to improve their learning and understanding of the different concepts and thus to get better results in the subject and to achieve the desired outcomes. The Process Control Course is taught in the Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid. Different methodologies have been integrated and used in the course as: flipped classroom, peer instruction or gamification. In order to implement the mentioned methods, the following material has been developed: screencasts, concept tests, trivia contest and simulations besides the traditional lecturing material (slides and text). First year results show high student motivation, higher participation in class and better results (marks) in the subject.  相似文献

Preoccupation to define the nutritional status of Puerto Rican families migrating to the United States, motivated the present research. A total of 526 families residing in the South Bronx, New York, and four communities in Puerto Rico, were therefore studied. Results in regard to nutrient intake suggest that the mothers' diets appear to be adequate in the South Bronx as well as in Puerto Rico, except in iron consumption, in the latter. Furthermore, the data show an apparent tendency to overconsumption of certain foods in both the South Bronx and Puerto Rico, particularly of the protein group, as well as a high consumption of sugar and carbonated beverages in Puerto Rico. Dietary data were corroborated through nutritional anthropometry, conforming a tendency for overweight and obesity among the women studied. Detailed information on the dietary changes occurred during the last five years, is provided. Educational programs such as EFNEP, availability of new foods, and the food preferences of children in their homes, seem to be influencing factors in the dynamics of food modifications within societal groups in transition.  相似文献

An effective understanding of fundamental concepts in Chemical Engineering can have an enduring affect on the ability of students to achieve success in their degree. Concept inventories are tools implemented to analyse students understanding of the fundamental concepts in their learning programs. A study at a large University in Australia has facilitated the development and implementation of a Chemical Engineering Fundamentals Concept Inventory (CEFCI). This concept inventory provides a quantitative means to predict areas in which course development can be focused. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the results from the CEFCI implemented at our institution, which follows similar research at the University of Melbourne (Shallcross, 2010). An outline of the development of the CEFCI questions is provided, showing the thorough methodology implemented to ensure a strong foundation for the CEFCI. Results from implementation of the CEFCI, along with the implications and limitations of these results are provided. Unlike previous research, rigorous analysis of the results through implementation of statistical methods has been completed. This provided a novel approach through which to analyse the effectiveness of both the inventory and the teaching of foundational concepts in the School of Chemical Engineering. The results of the implementation and analysis of the inventory displayed areas for constructive development in areas of synthesis and instruction of key concepts. Furthermore we believe a longitudinal study will facilitate improved understanding and implementation of the CEFCI. A similar tool could be utilised for other engineering disciplines, providing broad appeal for this current research.  相似文献

Communication skills are among the most important attributes for engineering graduates, and yet Australian employers are often dissatisfied with the level of communication skills demonstrated by graduate engineers. In recognition of the importance of communication skills, an engineering communication curriculum is fully integrated into two undergraduate courses in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Adelaide. The structured development of fundamental engineering communication skills in two Professional Practice courses (Levels I and II) is a collaboration between lecturers from the School of Chemical Engineering and the Faculty’s Engineering Communication Unit. The integration at Level I (Professional Practice I) is the focus of this paper.The success of the integration has been sustained in every Professional Practice I cohort from 2009 to 2016. Improvement is evident in the communication skills of almost every individual student, particularly for those students who enter the course with low-level skills. The wide spectrum of communication abilities, and some initial resistance from students to a focus on communication skills within an engineering course have been effectively addressed with a number of strategies. Limited success has been achieved with intervention in contributions to group reports by students with low-level skills.  相似文献

This paper outlines the design and implementation of two activity weeks in the autumn (first) and spring (second) semester of a first year Chemical Engineering program at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. Part of both the Chemical and Chemical with Environmental Engineering curriculum, these week long activity weeks were developed to foster students independent learning using open ended tasks, all linked through one overarching “industrial theme”. Designed to combine topics from a number of different taught modules into single problems, the activity weeks introduced students to multimodular problems whose solutions required a student centred approach utilising enhanced student-staff interaction. Feedback is presented from both staff and students, along with problems encountered during implementation and how these were overcome. Students were generally positive about the learning experience, and student performance during the weeks was greater than in the subsequent exams. However, this performance and enhanced interaction with staff came with an associated increase in teaching time required to plan and implement such activities.  相似文献

Lipid-enriched diets have been related to a high cancer incidence in experimental animals for many years, and more recently, to assorted defects on the immune response. We investigated the effect of incubating human or murine (C3H/HEJ) lymphocytes with saturated (16∶0) and unsaturated (18∶1, 18∶2, 18∶3, 20∶4) fatty acids (12 μg for each 107 cells), on the ability to cap with andhuman or anti-mouse anti-IgM, μ-chain specific antibody. Capping was also tested in obese (ob/ob, C57BL/6J) mice. Capping at 30 and 60 min was reduced by fatty acid incubation to 10–30% of control values in humans (p<.001), and to 30% of control values in mice (p<.01), regardless of degree of unsaturation. ob/ob capped normally. A lymphocyte membrane effect caused by fatty acids is observed in these experiments. Whether this is related to the dysimmunity caused by lipid diets cannot be assessed from our data, especially since all fatty acids, regardless of unsaturation, reduced the capping phenomenon. 物理化学课程是化学、化工、生物工程、环境工程、材料工程等专业的一门重要的专业基础课。为了适应社会发展的需要,物理化学课程教学的改革势在必行。笔者观摩了美国田纳西大学物理化学教学的全过程,受到了一些深刻的启示和借鉴,认为借鉴美国高校物理化学教学的先进经验,将以教师为中心的教学模式转变为以学生为中心的教学模式,是提高物理化学教学效果的一个有效途径。  相似文献
