The flow behavior of the α and β phases in Ti-6Al-4V was interpreted in the context of a self-consistent modeling formalism. For this purpose, high-temperature compression tests were conducted at various temperatures for a single-phase α alloy (Ti-7Al-1.5V), a variety of near-β alloys, and the two-phase alloy Ti-6Al-4V, each with an equiaxed microstructure. The flow behavior of the α phase in Ti-6Al-4V was deduced from the experimental results of the single-phase α alloy. The flow behavior of the β phase, which was predicted by using the self-consistent approach and the measured flow behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-7Al-1.5V, showed good agreement with direct measurements of the various near-β alloys. From these results, it was shown that the strength of the α phase is approximately three times higher than that of the β phase at temperatures between 1088 K and 1223 K (815 °C and 950 °C). It was also concluded that the relative strain rates in the two phases varies significantly with temperature. The usefulness of the approach was confirmed by comparing the predicted and measured flow stresses for other Ti-6Al-4V and near-α alloys.  相似文献

Synthesis of nanocrystalline Ti-6Al-4V was explored using mechanochemical processing. The reaction mixture was comprised of CaH2, Mg powder, anhydrous AlCl3, anhydrous VCl3, and TiCl4. The milled powder (reaction product) primarily consisted of nanocrystalline alloy hydride having a composition (Ti-6Al-4V)H1.942, along with MgCl2 and CaCl2 as by-products. Aqueous solutions of nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and 1 pct sodium sulfite were found to be very effective in leaching of the chlorides from the milled powder. The (Ti-6Al-4V)H1.942 on dehydrogenation at 375°C resulted in nanocrystalline Ti-6Al-4V alloy powder.  相似文献

In the present study, a detailed investigation of mechanical and electrochemical properties of laser-surface-nitrided Ti-6Al-4V has been carried out. Laser treatment is carried out by melting the surface of Ti-6Al-4V substrate using a high power CW diode laser with nitrogen as shrouding environment. The effect of laser parameters (applied power and gas flow rate) on the properties of the nitrided surface was evaluated. The microhardness of the nitrided surface was improved to a maximum of 1175 VHN in the present set of laser processing conditions as compared to 280 VHN of as-received substrate. Surface nitriding increased the potential for pit formation (E pit) significantly as compared to as-received Ti-6Al-4V. Immersion in Hank’s solution showed calcium phosphate deposition from the solution. The optimum process parameters for laser surface nitriding were derived.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate the hypothesis that the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of removable partial dentures (RPD) made from cast titanium alloys can be improved by alloying with low-cost, low-melting elements such as Cu, Al, and Fe using commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V as controls. RPD specimens in the form of rest-shaped, clasp, rectangular-shaped specimens and round-bar tensile specimens were cast using an experimental Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy, Ti-5Al-1Fe, and Ti-1Fe in an Al2O3-based investment with a centrifugal-casting machine. The mechanical properties of the alloys were determined by performing tensile tests under a controlled displacement rate. The fatigue life of the RPD specimens was tested by the three-point bending in an MTS testing machine under a cyclic displacement of 0.5 mm. Fatigue tests were performed at 10 Hz at ambient temperature until the specimens failed into two pieces. The tensile data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05) and the fatigue life data were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (α = 0.05). The experimental Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy showed a significantly higher average fatigue life than that of either CP-Ti or Ti-5Al-1Fe alloy (p < 0.05). SEM fractography showed that the fatigue cracks initiated from surface grains, surface pores, or hard particles in surface grains instead of the internal casting pores. Among the alloys tested, the Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy exhibited favorable results in fabricating dental appliances with an excellent fatigue behavior compared with other commercial alloys.  相似文献

The change in hydrogen concentration as a function of applied strain has been studied in commercial titanium alloys that included threeβ-phase, twoα-phase, and an (α + β)-phase Ti-6Al-4V alloy with differingα/β morphologies.Insitu measurements were made using a nondestructive nuclear technique on samples for which uniaxial compressive and tensile stresses were applied by four-point bending. Theβ-phase alloys exhibited hydrogen redistribution under an elastic stress gradient, but no further change was discernible accompanying plastic deformation. The extent of hydrogen concentration change for theβ-phase alloys was of the order of 4 to 6 pct for a 620 MPa stress gradient. This is less than would be predicted based on available data for the partial molal volume of hydrogen. Diffusion coefficients in a stress gradient were also determined and are consistent with those measured inβ-phase titanium at elevated and room temperatures. Within the experimental sensitivities there was no evidence of hydrogen redistribution with applied stress for theα-phase and Ti-6Al-4V alloys.  相似文献

The stability of a lamellar structure consisting of α 2 and γ phases in alloys Ti-48Al, Ti-48Al-2Mo, Ti-48Al-4Nb, and Ti-48Al-1Mo-4Nb has been studied as a function of aging time and temperature. The alloys were solution treated (1400 °C, 30 min, and air-cooled (AC)) and aged at 1000 °C and 1100 °C for 1, 4, and 16 hours, respectively. The results indicate that the kinetics of lamellae to equiaxed transformation depends on alloy chemistry, aging time, and temperature. The Nb decreases and Mo increases the kinetics of transformation. The combined effect of Nb and Mo results in the highest volume fraction of equiaxed microstructure at a given aging time and temperature. The results have been discussed in relation to microstructural features and have been compared with those reported in other α 2+γ alloys.  相似文献

The effect of alloy composition on hydrogen activity was measured for seven titanium alloys as a means to determine the tendency for hydrogen migration within dissimilar metal welds. The alloys were: Ti-CP, Ti-3A1-2.5V, Ti-3Al-2.5V-3Zr, Ti-3Al-2Nb-lTa, Ti-6A1, Ti-6A1-4V, and Ti-6Al-2Nb-lTa-0.8Mo. Hydrogen pressure-hydrogen concentration relationships were determined for temperatures from 600 ‡C to 800 ‡C and hydrogen concentrations up to approximately 3.5 at. pct (750 wppm). Fusion welds were made between Ti-CP and Ti-CP and between Ti-CP and Ti-6A1-4V to observe directly the hydrogen redistribution in similar and dissimilar metal couples. Hydrogen activity was found to be significantly affected by alloying elements, particularly Al in solid solution. At a constant Al content and temperature, an increase in the volume fraction ofΒ reduced the activity of hydrogen in α-@#@ Β alloys. Activity was also found to be strongly affected by temperature. The effect of temperature differences on hydrogen activity was much greater than the effects resulting from alloy composition differences at a given temperature. Thus, hydrogen redistribution should be expected within similar metal couples subjected to extreme temperature gradients, such as those peculiar to fusion welding. Significant hydrogen redistribution in dissimilar alloy weldments also can be expected for many of the compositions in this study. Hydride formation stemming from these driving forces was observed in the dissimilar couple fusion welds. In addition, a basis for estimating hydrogen migration in titanium welds, based on hydrogen activity data, is described.  相似文献

The fracture toughness,K c, of two rapid-solidification powder-metallurgy Al-Fe-X alloys, Al-8Fe-1.4V-1. 7Si and Al-8Fe-2Mo-1V, has been measured as a function of specimen thickness. The former alloy has been found to exhibit crack-divider delamination and aK IC value independent of specimen thickness, while an opposite behavior is found in the latter alloy. The results confirm the presence of a thin sheet toughening mechanism in the Al-Fe-V-Si alloy. The orientation dependence ofK IC and an unusual anisotropy fracture behavior observed in some, but not all, Al-Fe-X alloys have also been studied and their origins identified. It is shown that both thin sheet toughening and anisotropic fracture in Al-Fe-X alloys arise from interface delamination and void nucleation at oxide fragments aligned along prior powder-particle bound-aries (PPB’s).  相似文献

The present study compares the fatigue and fracture properties of the high-strength β titanium alloy β-Cez with the conventional α+β titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V, because of increasing interest in replacing α+β titanium alloys with β titanium alloys for highly stressed airframe and jet engine components. This comparison study includes the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in an α+ β-processed condition (for a typical turbine blade application) and the β-Cez alloy in two distinctly different α+β-processed and β-processed conditions (optimized for a combination of superior strength, ductility, and fracture toughness). The comparison principally showed a much lower yield stress for Ti-6Al-4V (915 MPa) than for both β-Cez conditions (1200 MPa). The Ti-6Al-4V material also showed the significantly lower high-cycle fatigue strength (resistance against crack initiation) of 375 MPa (R=−1) as compared to the β-Cez alloy (∼600 MPa, R=−1). Particularly in the presence of large cracks (>5 mm), the fatigue crack growth resistance and fracture toughness of the Ti-6Al-4V material is superior when compared to both β-Cez conditions. However, for small crack sizes, the conditions of both the alloys under study show equivalent resistance against fatigue crack growth. For the β-Cez material, where microstructures were optimized for high fracture toughness (conventional large crack sizes) by thermomechanical processing, maximum K Ic-values of 68 MPa√m of the β-processed β-Cez condition (tested in the longitudinal direction) decreased by ∼50 pct in the presence of small cracks (1 mm). A similar decrease in fracture toughness was obtained by loading the β-processed β-Cez condition perpendicular to the flat surfaces of the pancake-shaped β grain structure (tested in the short transverse direction). These results were discussed in terms of the effectiveness of the crack front geometry in hindering crack propagation. Further, the results of this study were considered for alloy selection and optimized microstructures for fatigue and fracture critical applications. Finally, the advantage of the α+β-processed β-Cez condition in highly stressed engineering components is pointed out because of its overall superior combination of fatigue crack initiation and propagation resistance (especially against small fatigue cracks).  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen on the oxidation behavior of Ti-25Al, T-24Al-15Nb, and Ti-25Al-11Nb (at. pct) has been examined in this study. The gases employed were nitrogen and oxygen-nitrogen and oxygen-argon mixtures in various proportions at a total pressure of 1 atmosphere. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range of 1100 to 1300 K by thermogravimetry. The suitability of employing the parabolic rate law as the basis of interpretation of weight gainvs time data has been discussed. Oxidation resistance of Nb-containing alloys was superior to that of binary Ti-25Al, irrespective of the gas composition employed. The nitridation rates of alloys, with or without Nb, were more than an order of magnitude lower than those for oxidation. The scales were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The scales formed in all the conditions mostly consisted of TiO2 and Al2O3. However, TiN was observed in scales of Nb-containing alloys in all nitrogen bearing gases and seemed to primarily account for improved oxidation resistance of the preceding in comparison to alloys without Nb. Nitrogen pretreatment was provided for some samples before oxidation for further elucidation of the role of nitrogen.  相似文献

Two ternary TiAl-based alloys with chemical compositions of Ti-46.4 at. pct Al-1.4 at. pct Si (Si poor) and Ti-45 at. pct Al-2.7 at. pct Si (Si rich), which were prepared by reaction powder processing, have been investigated. Both alloys consist of the intermetallic compounds y-TiAl, α2-Ti3Al, and ξ-Ti5(Si, Al)3. The microstructure can be described as a duplex structure(i.e., lamellar γ/α2 regions distributed in γ matrix) containing ξ precipitates. The higher Si content leads to a larger amount of ξ precipitates and a finer y grain size in the Si-rich alloy. The tensile properties of both alloys depend on test temperature. At room temperature and 700 °C, the tensile properties of the Si-poor alloy are better than those of the Si-rich alloy. At 900 °C, the opposite is true. Examinations of tensile deformed specimens reveal ξ-Ti5(Si, Al)3 particle debonding and particle cracking at lower test temperatures. At 900 °C, nucleation of voids and microcracks along lamellar grain boundaries and evidence for recovery and dynamic recrystallization were observed. Due to these processes, the alloys can tolerate ξ-Ti5(Si, Al)3 particles at high temperature, where the positive effect of grain refinement on both strength and ductility can be utilized.  相似文献

The effect of deformation-induced transformation of metastableβ phase on the ductility and toughness of four commercial titanium alloys was investigated. Tensile tests, Charpy impact tests, and both static and dynamic fracture toughness tests were carried out at temperatures between 77 and 473 K on four titanium alloys containing metastableβ phase. Deformation-inducedα″ (orthorhombic martensite) was observed in an (α + β)-type Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo alloy. The dynamic fracture toughness of this alloy increased considerably at 223 K compared to those at other temperatures. In another (α + β)-type Ti-6A1-4V alloy, the static fracture toughness at 123 K and the dynamic fracture toughness at 223 K were increased considerably by the presence of deformation-induced martensite compared to those at other temperatures. The strength increased as the temperature decreased in this alloy. An abnormal elongation of aβ-type alloy, Ti-15V-3Al-3Sn-3Cr, at 123 K was attributed to the mechanical twinning of theβ phase. However, the effect of deformation-induced transformation on the fracture toughness of Ti-3Al-8V-6Cr-4Mo-4Zr alloy was not observed. Evaluations of the (infrared)-brazed Ti-6Al-4V and niobium joints using three silver-base braze alloys have been extensively studied. According to the dynamic wetting angle measurement results, the niobium substrate cannot be effectively wetted by all three braze alloys. Because the dissolution of Ti-6Al-4V substrate causes transport of Ti into the molten braze, the molten braze dissolved with Ti can effectively wet the niobium substrate during brazing. For infrared-brazed Ti-6Al-4V/Ag/Nb joint, it is mainly comprised of the Ag-rich matrix. The TiAg reaction layer is observed at the interface between the braze and Ti-6Al-4V substrate. In contrast, Ti-rich, Ag-rich, and interfacial TiAg phases are found in the furnace-brazed specimen. The dominated Ti-rich phase in the joint is caused by enhanced dissolution between the molten braze and Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The infrared-brazed Ti-6Al-4V/72Ag-28Cu/Nb joint is mainly comprised of the Ag-rich matrix and Ag-Cu eutectic. With increasing the brazing temperature or time, the amount of Ag-Cu eutectic is decreased, and the interfacial Cu-Ti reaction layer(s) is increased. The infrared brazed joint has the highest average shear strength of 224.1 MPa. The averaged shear strength of the brazed joint is decreased with increasing brazing temperature or time, and its fracture location changes from the braze alloy into the interfacial reaction layer(s) due to excessive growth of the Cu-Ti intermetallics. The infrared-brazed Ti-6Al-4V/95Ag-5Al/Nb joint is composed of Ag-rich matrix and TiAl interfacial reaction layer. With increasing the brazing time, the amount of Ag-rich phase is greatly decreased, and the interfacial reaction layer becomes Ti3Al due to enhanced dissolution of Ti-6Al-4V substrate into the molten braze. The average shear strength of the infrared-brazed joint is 172.8 MPa. Additionally, the existence of an interfacial Ti3Al reaction layer significantly deteriorates the shear strength of the furnace-brazed specimen.  相似文献

In the current study, the evolution of microstructure and texture has been studied for Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy during sub-transus thermomechanical processing. This part of the work deals with the deformation response of the alloy by rolling in the (α + β) phase field. The (α + β) annealing behavior of the rolled specimen is communicated in part II. Rolled microstructures of the alloys exhibit either kinked or straight α colonies depending on their orientations with respect to the principal rolling directions. The Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy shows an improved rolling response compared with the alloy Ti-6Al-4V because of smaller α lamellae size, coherency of α/β interfaces, and multiple slip due to orientation factors. Accelerated dynamic globularization for this alloy is similarly caused by the intralamellar transverse boundary formation via multiple slip and strain accumulation at TiB particles. The (0002)α pole figures of rolled Ti-6Al-4V alloy shows “TD splitting” at lower rolling temperatures because of strong initial texture. Substantial β phase mitigates the effect of starting texture at higher temperature so that “RD splitting” characterizes the basal pole figure. Weak starting texture and easy slip transfer for Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy produce simultaneous TD and RD splittings in basal pole figures at all rolling temperatures.  相似文献

The results of a recent study of the effects of ternary alloying with Ti on the fatigue and fracture behavior of a new class of forged damage-tolerant niobium aluminide (Nb3Al-xTi) intermetallics are presented in this article. The alloys studied have the following nominal compositions: Nb-15Al-10Ti (10Ti alloy), Nb-15Al-25Ti (25Ti alloy), and Nb-15Al-40Ti (40Ti alloy). All compositions are quoted in atomic percentages unless stated otherwise. The 10Ti and 25Ti alloys exhibit fracture toughness levels between 10 and 20 MPa√m at room temperature. Fracture in these alloys occurs by brittle cleavage fracture modes. In contrast, a ductile dimpled fracture mode is observed at room-temperature for the alloy containing 40 at. pct Ti. The 40Ti alloy also exhibits exceptional combinations of room-temperature strength (695 to 904 MPa), ductility (4 to 30 pct), fracture toughness (40 to 100 MPa√m), and fatigue crack growth resistance (comparable to Ti-6Al-4V, monolithic Nb, and inconnel 718). The implications of the results are discussed for potential structural applications of the 40Ti alloy in the intermediate-temperature (∼700 °C to 750 °C) regime.  相似文献

Correlation of microstructure with the hardness, wear resistance, and fracture toughness of two-layered VC/Ti-6Al-4V surface composites fabricated by high-energy electron-beam irradiation was investigated in this study. A mixture of VC powders and CaF2 flux was deposited on a Ti-6Al-4V substrate, and then an electron beam was irradiated on these powder mixtures to fabricate an one-layered surface composite. A two-layered surface composite was fabricated by irradiating an electron-beam again onto the powder mixture deposited on the one-layered surface composite. The composite layers of 1.2 to 1.5 mm in thickness were homogeneously formed without defects and contained a large amount (25 to 40 vol pct) of carbides in the martensitic or β-Ti matrix. This microstructural modification, including the formation of hard carbides and hardened matrix, improved the hardness and wear resistance. Particularly in the two-layered surface composite containing more carbides, the wear resistance was greatly enhanced to a level 7 times higher than that of the Ti-6Al-4V substrate. In-situ observation of the fracture process showed that microcracks were initiated at carbides and propagated along these microcracked carbides and that shear bands were formed in the matrix between these microcracks. In the two-layered surface composite, numerous microcracks were initiated at many carbides and then rapidly propagated along them, thereby lowering the fracture toughness.  相似文献

A series of in-situ, deformation-processed metal matrix composites were produced by direct powder extrusion of blended constituents. The resulting composites are comprised of a metallic Ti-6Al-4V matrix containing dispersed and co-deformed discontinuously reinforced-intermetallic matrix composite (DR-IMC) reinforcements. The DR-IMCs are comprised of discontinuous TiB2 particulate within a titanium trialuminide or near-γ Ti-47Al matrix. Thus, an example of a resulting composite would be Ti-6Al-4V+40 vol pct (Al3Ti+30 vol pct TiB2) or Ti-6Al-4V+40 vol pct (Ti-47Al+40 vol pct TiB2), with the DR-IMCs having an aligned, high aspect ratio morphology as a consequence of deformation processing. The degree to which both constituents deform during extrusion has been examined using systematic variations in the percentage of TiB2 within the DR-IMC, and by varying the percentage of DR-IMC within the metal matrix. In the former instance, variation of the TiB2 percentage effects variations in relative flow behavior; while in the latter, varying the percentage of DR-IMC within the metallic matrix effects changes in strain distribution among components. The results indicate that successful co-deformation processing can occur within certain ranges of relative flow stress; however, the extent of commensurate flow will be limited by the constituents’ inherent capacity to plastically deform.  相似文献

Processing of two-phase γ-TiAl alloys (Ti-47Al-2Cr-2Nb, or minor modifications thereof) above the α-transus temperature (T α ) produced unique refined-colony/ultrafine lamellar structures in both powder-and ingot-metallurgy (PM and IM, respectively) alloys. These ultrafine lamellar structures consist of fine laths of the γ and α 2 phases, with average interlamellar spacings (λ L ) of 100 to 200 nm and α 2-α 2 spacings (λ α ) of 200 to 500 nm, and are dominated by γ/α 2 interfaces. This characteristic microstructure forms by extruding PM Ti-47Al-2Cr-2Nb alloys at 1400 °C and also forms with finer colony size but slightly coarser, fully lamellar structures by hot-extruding similar IM alloys. Alloying additions of B and W refine λ L and λ α in both IM Ti-47Al (cast and heat treated at 1400 °C) and IM Ti-47Al-2Cr-2Nb alloys (extruded at 1400 °C). The ultrafine lamellar structure in the PM alloy remains stable during heat treatment at 900 °C for 2 hours but becomes unstable after 4 hours at 982 °C; the ultrafine lamellar structure remains relatively stable after aging for >5000 hours at 800 °C. Additions of B+W dramatically improve the coarsening resistance of λ L and λ α in the IM Ti-47Al alloys aged for 168 hours at 1000 °C. In both the PM and IM Ti-47Al-2Cr-2Nb alloys, these refined-colony/ultrafine lamellar structures correlate with high strength and good ductility at room temperature, and very good strength at high temperatures. While refining the colony size improves the room-temperature ductility, alloys with finer λ L are stronger at both room and high temperatures. Additions of B + W produce finer as-processed λ L and λ α in IM TiAl alloys and stabilize such structures during heat treatment or aging. This article is based on a presentation made in the symposium “Fundamentals of Gamma Titanium Aluminides,” presented at the TMS Annual Meeting, February 10–12, 1997, Orlando, Florida, under the auspices of the ASM/MSD Flow & Fracture and Phase Transformations Committees.  相似文献

The increasing incidence of military aircraft engine failures that can be traced to high-cycle fatigue (HCF) has prompted a reassessment of the design methodologies for HCF-critical components, such as turbine blades and disks. Because of the high-frequency vibratory loading involved, damagetolerant design methodologies based on a threshold for no crack growth offer a preferred approach. As impact damage from ingested debris is a prime source of HCF-related failures, the current study is focused on the role of such foreign-object damage (FOD) in influencing fatigue crack-growth thresholds and early crack growth of both large and small cracks in a fan blade alloy, Ti-6Al-4V. FOD, which was simulated by the high-velocity (200 to 300 m/s) impact of steel spheres on a flat surface, was found to reduce markedly the fatigue strength, primarily due to earlier crack initiation. This is discussed in terms of four salient factors: (1) the stress concentration associated with the FOD indentation, (2) the presence of small microcracks in the damaged zone, (3) the localized presence of tensile residual hoop stresses at the base and rim of the indent sites, and (4) microstructural damage from FOD-induced plastic deformation. It was found that no crack growth occurred from FOD impact sites in this alloy at ΔK values below ∼ 2.9 MPa √m, i.e., over 50 pct higher than the “closure-free”, worst-case threshold value of ΔK TH = 1.9 MPa √m, defined for large cracks in bimodal Ti-6Al-4V alloys at the highest possible load ratio. It is, therefore, concluded that such worst-case, large fatigue crack thresholds can, thus, be used as a practical lower-bound to FOD-initiated cracking in this alloy.  相似文献
