The effect of Na‐alginate content on the gas permeation properties of water‐swollen membranes prepared by varying Na‐alginate and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) content in membranes was investigated. The influences of water content and crystallinity of the membranes on the gas permeation performance of the water‐swollen membranes were studied. The gas permeation rate and selectivity of Na‐alginate/PVA water‐swollen membranes were compared with those of the dry membranes. The permeation rates of nitrogen and carbon dioxide through water‐swollen membranes were in the range of 0.4–7.6 × 10?7 to 3.7–8.5 × 10?6 cm3 (STP)/cm2 s?1 cmHg?1, which were 10,000 times higher than those of dry‐state membranes. The permeation rates of mixture gases through water‐swollen Na‐alginate/PVA membranes were found to increase exponentially with the increase of Na‐alginate content, whereas carbon dioxide concentration in permeates was decreased linearly. It was found that the gas permeance of the water‐swollen membranes increased with increasing the Na‐alginate content in the membrane. Gas permeation rates of the water‐swollen Na‐alginate/PVA membranes increased with increasing the water content in the membrane and decreasing the crystallinity of the membrane. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water‐swollen hydrogel (WSH) membranes for gas separation were prepared by the dip‐coating of asymmetric porous polyetherimide (PEI) membrane supports with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)–glutaraldehyde (GA), followed by the crosslinking of the active layer by a solution method. Crosslinked PVA/GA film of different blend compositions (PVA/GA = 1/0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12 mol %) were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and their water‐swelling ratio. The swelling behavior of PVA/GA films of different blend compositions was dependent on the crosslinking density and chemical functional groups created by the reaction between PVA and GA, such as the acetal group, ether linkage, and unreacted pendent aldehydes in PVA. The permeation performances of the membranes swollen by the water vapor contained in a feed gas were investigated. The behavior of gas permeation through a WSH membrane was parallel to the swelling behavior of the PVA/GA film in water. The permeation rate of carbon dioxide through the WSH membranes was 105 (cm3 cm?2 s?1 cmHg) and a CO2/N2 separation factor was about 80 at room temperature. The effect of the additive (potassium bicarbonate, KHCO3) and catalyst (sodium arsenite, NaASO2) on the permeation of gases through these WSH membranes was also studied. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of LDPE/PVA blend films were prepared via a twin‐screw extruder, and their morphology, thermal property, oxygen and water vapor permeation, surface properties, and mechanical properties were investigated as a function of the PVA content. During the extrusion process of the blend films, glycerin improved the compatibility and processing conditions between LDPE and PVA. The melting temperature (Tm), melting enthalpy (ΔHm), crystallinity (%), and thermal stability of the thermal decomposition temperature (T5%) of the LDPE/PVA blend films decreased with increasing PVA content. The oxygen permeabilities of the blend films decreased from 24.0 to 11.4 cm3·cm (m2·day·atm)?1 at 23°C. The WVTR increased from 7.8 to 15.0 g(m2 day)?1 and the water uptake increased from 0.13 to 9.31%, respectively. The mechanical properties of blend films were slightly enhanced up to 2% PVA and then decreased. The physical properties of the blend films strongly varied with the chemical structure and morphology depending on the PVA and glycerin. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Novel pervaporation (PV) membranes for ethanol dehydration were prepared by blend poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), followed by the crosslinking reaction with glutaraldehyde; the structure and miscibility of the blend membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry; the results indicated that the blends were miscible. The effect of feed concentration, operation temperature, crosslinking agent content, etc. on sorption performance and PV performance of the blend membrane is investigated. The membrane of CMCS/PVA blend ratio of 8 : 2 exhibited a high separation factor of 2959 with a reasonably high water flux value of 0.14 kg m?2h?1 at the azeotropic feed composition (95 wt % of ethanol) at a temperature of 45°C. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanofiltration membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and ionic polymers, such as sodium alginate (SA) and chitosan, were prepared by casting the respective polymer solutions. The membranes prepared from PVA or PVA–ionic polymer blend were crosslinked in a isopropanol solution using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. The membranes were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffractometry and swelling test. The membranes crosslinked through the acetal linkage formation between the  OH groups of PVA and the ionomer and glutaraldehyde appeared to be semicrystalline. To study the permeation properties, the membranes were tested with various feed solutions [sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, poly(ethylene glycol) with 600 g/mol of molecular weight (PEG 600), and isopropyl alcohol]. For example, the permeance and the solute rejection of the 1000 ppm sodium sulfate at 600 psi of upstream pressure through the PVA membrane were 0.55 m3/m2 day and over 99%, respectively. The effects of the ionomers on the permeation properties of the PVA membranes were studied using the PVA–SA and PVA–chitosan blend membranes. The addition of small amount of ionic polymers (5 wt %) made the PVA membranes more effective for the organic solute rejection without decrease in their fluxes. The rejection ratios of the PEG 600 and isopropanol were increased substantially. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 72: 1755–1762, 1999  相似文献

Polyvinyl alcohol–tetraethoxysilane–perfluorosulfonic acid (PVA–TEOS–PFSA) hybrid membrane was prepared by sol–gel method through PVA being modified doubly by PFSA and TEOS. With polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane as a substrate membrane, PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane was fabricated by dip-coating method for pervaporation (PV) dehydration of ethyl acetate (EAc) aqueous solution. The hybrid membrane was characterized by swelling degree, static contact angle, Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscope. Effects of PFSA and TEOS contents in coating solution on PV performance of composite membrane were investigated, respectively. With increasing PFSA content, the permeation flux of composite membrane increased, while the separation factor decreased. Just the opposite, the increase of TEOS content resulted in the decrease in permeation flux and the increase in separation factor. In addition, the PV performances of composite membranes were also investigated at different feed temperatures and water concentrations in feed, respectively. The PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane, which was prepared from coating with PVA/PFSA mass ratio of 80/20 and TEOS content of 20 wt%, exhibited the permeation flux of 347.9 g m?2 h?1 and the separation factor of 2218 for PV dehydration of 2 wt% water of EAc solution at 40 °C.  相似文献

A series of membranes are prepared by air drying thin films, which were composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) blended with chitosan [a (1 → 4)2-amino-2-deoxy-β-D-glucan] (PVA–Chit) in different ratios. The PVA-blended chitosan membranes showed improved strength properties and permeability functions for low-molecular-weight compounds. Nonthrombogenic PVA–Chit (4 : 6) membranes were derived by immobilizing bioactive molecules like PGE1 on heparin-modified membranes, via free radical mechanisms, by N2 plasma. This novel membrane demonstrated good permeability properties for small molecules and showed a dramatic reduction in platelet attachment. The prostaglandin E1-immobilized substrate also indicated an increase in albumin surface attachment and a reduction in fibrinogen binding. This may be one of the parameters for a reduced platelet-surface attachment, which may also improve the blood compatibility of the substrate. It is also postulated that the total water content of membranes need not be the prime factor governing the permeability of solutes through water-swollen membranes. However, many other parameters govern the solute permeability, like the amount of solutes dissolved in bound water and the status of water in the polymer matrix.  相似文献

The blend membranes were satisfactorily prepared by coagulating a mixture of O‐carboxymethylated chitosan (CM‐chitosan) and alginate in aqueous solution with 5 wt % CaCl2, and then by treating with 1 wt % HCl aqueous solution. Their structure and miscibility were characterized by scanning electron micrograph, X‐ray diffraction, infrared spectra, differential thermal analysis, and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results indicated that the blends were miscible, when the weight ratio of CM‐chitosan to alginate was in the range from 1 : 1 to 1 : 5. The polymers interpenetration including a Ca2+ crosslinked bridge occurred in the blend membrane, and leads to high separation factor for pervaporation separation of alcohol/water and low permeation. The tensile strength in the wet state (σb = 192 kg cm−2 for CM‐chitosan/alginate 1 : 1) and thermostability of the blend membranes were significantly superior to that of alginic acid membrane, and cellulose/alginate blend membranes, owing to a strong electrostatic interaction caused by —NH2 groups of CM‐chitosan with —COOH groups of algic acid. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Silk fibroin/chitosan blend films were examined through IR spectroscopy to determine the conformational changes of silk fibroin. The effects of the fibroin/chitosan blend ratios (chitosan content) on the physical and mechanical properties were investigated to discover the feasibility of using these films as biomedical materials such as artificial skin and wound dressing. The mechanical properties of the blend films containing 10–40% chitosan were found to be excellent. The tensile strength, breaking elongation, and Young's modulus were affected by the chitosan contents of the blend films, which were also related to the density and degree of swelling. The coefficient of water vapor permeability of the blend films increased linearly with the chitosan content, and the values of 1000–2000 g m?2 day?1 were comparable to those of commercial wound dressings. Silk fibroin/chitosan blend films had good oxygen and water vapor permeabilities, making them useful as biomaterials. In particular, the blend film containing 40–50% chitosan showed very high oxygen permeability. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 80: 928–934, 2001  相似文献

Silk fibroin/chitosan (SF/CS) blend membranes were prepared and characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that SF and CS were compatible in the blend membranes and that the membranes were dense without microscopic phase separation. Swelling experiments showed that the swelling ratio of the blend membranes increased with CS content and reached the highest value when CS content was 70 wt%. Experiments indicated that the permeability coefficient of K+ through the blend membrane was 2–4 times higher than that of pure CS membrane, and 10 times higher than that of pure SF membrane. The permeation rate of K+ increased linearly with CS content in the blend membrane for the lower concentration feeding solution. For different metal ions, the permeability through SF/CS blend membranes was in the sequence K+ > Ca2+ > Cd2+ > Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Graft copolymers of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with polyacrylamide were prepared and membranes were fabricated at 48 and 93% grafting of acrylamide onto PVA. These membranes were used in the pervaporation separation of water/acetic acid mixtures at 25, 35, and 45°C. The permeation flux, separation selectivity, diffusion coefficient, and permeate concentration were determined. The highest separation selectivity of 23 for neat PVA at 25°C and the lowest value of 2.2 for 93% acrylamide‐grafted PVA membranes were observed. A permeation flux of 1.94 kg m?2 h?1 was found for the 93% grafted membrane at 90 mass % of water in the feed mixture. The diffusion coefficients in a water/acetic acid mixture had an effect on the membrane permselectivity. The Arrhenius equation was used to calculate the activation parameters for permeation as well as for the diffusion of water and of acetic acid. The activation energy values for the permeation flux varied from 97 to 28 kJ/mol. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 244–258, 2002  相似文献

A novel polyion complex membrane was synthesized for direct methanol fuel cell application through the blending of the natural biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) with the synthetic polymer Pebax [poly(ether‐block ‐amide)]. The blend was covalently crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) and sulfonated with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), after which characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, and universal testing machine techniques was carried out. The SA–Pebax–GA–H2SO4 membrane exhibited a high ion‐exchange capacity of 2.1 mequiv/g, an optimum water sorption of 17.3%, and a low methanol sorption of 9.5%. A desirably low methanol permeability of 9.25 × 10?8 cm2/s and a high proton conductivity of 0.067 S/cm were obtained as against corresponding values of 1.82 × 10?6 cm2/s and 0.077 S/cm reported for a commercial Nafion 117 membrane. Moreover, a high selectivity of 6.5 × 105 Ss/cm3 with a power density of 0.17 W/cm2 was achieved with the indigenous blend membrane at a potential of 0.34 V. Molecular dynamics simulation was performed along with the estimation of fractional free volume to explain the transport behavior of water and methanol molecules through the membrane. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blended with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was crosslinked with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to prepare organic–inorganic PVA/PEG/TEOS hybrid membranes. The membranes were then used for the dehydration of ethanol by pervaporation (PV). The physicochemical structure of the hybrid membranes was studied with Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT‐IR), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction WXRD, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PVA and PEG were crosslinked with TEOS, and the crosslinking density increased with increases in the TEOS content, annealing temperature, and time. The water permselectivity of the hybrid membranes increased with increasing annealing temperature or time; however, the permeation fluxes decreased at the same time. SEM pictures showed that phase separation took place in the hybrid membranes when the TEOS content was greater than 15 wt %. The water permselectivity increased with the addition of TEOS and reached the maximum at 10 wt % TEOS. The water permselectivity decreased, whereas the permeation flux increased, with an increase in the feed water content or feed temperature. The hybrid membrane that was annealed at 130°C for 12 h exhibited high permselectivity with a separation factor of 300 and a permeation flux of 0.046 kg m?2 h?1 in PV of 15 wt % water in ethanol. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The permeability of poly-L -methionine (PLM) membrane and its oxidized form to water vapor was studied. Permeability coefficients of the PLM membrane were large, of the order of 10?7 cm3 (S.T.P.)·cm/cm2·sec·cm Hg. The sorption and permeation behavior of the PLM membrane was hydrophobic. The oxidized membrane was prepared by treating one or both sides of the PLM membrane with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. The membrane oxidized from one side is probably not layered but has a gradient of composition from one surface to the other. The amounts of water sorbed by the modified membrane increased with increase in oxidation time. The permeability coefficients of water vapor through the modified membrane were of the order of 10?6 cm3 (S.T.P.)·cm/cm2·sec·cm Hg.  相似文献

Using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with highly hydrophilic properties as membrane material and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as an additive, we prepared PVA/tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with good antifouling properties by a sol–gel method. The PVA/TEOS UF membranes were characterized by X‐ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and static contact angle of measurement of water. The hybridization of TEOS to PVA for preparing the PVA/TEOS UF membranes achieved the required permeation performance and good antifouling behaviors. The morphology and permeation performance of the PVA/TEOS membranes varied with the different TEOS loadings and PEG contents. The pure water fluxes (JW) increased and the rejections (Rs) decreased with increasing TEOS loading and PEG content. The PVA/TEOS UF membrane with a PVA/TEOS/PEG/H2O composition mass ratio of 10/3/4/83 in the dope solution had a JW of 66.5 L m?2 h?1 and an R of 60.3% when we filtered it with 300 ppm of bovine serum albumin aqueous solution at an operational pressure difference of 0.1 MPa. In addition, the filtration and backwashing experiment proved that the PVA/TEOS membranes possessed good long‐term antifouling abilities. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. To identify the effect of blend ratios of syndiotacticity‐rich poly(vinyl alcohol) (s‐PVA)/atactic PVA (a‐PVA) having similar number‐average degrees of polymerization (Pn)s of 4000 and degrees of saponification (DS)s of 99.9% on the rheological properties of s‐PVA/a‐PVA/water solutions, water‐soluble s‐PVA and a‐PVA with different syndiotactic diad contents of 58.5 and 54.0%, respectively, were prepared by bulk copolymerization of vinyl pivalate and vinyl acetate (VAc) and solution polymerization of VAc, followed by saponifying the corresponding copoly(vinyl pivalate/vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl acetate). The blend ratios played a significant role in rheological behavior. Over the frequency range of 10?1–102 rad/s, s‐PVA/a‐PVA blend solutions with larger s‐PVA content show more shear thinning at similar (Pn)s and (DS)s of polymer, suggesting that PVA molecules are more readily oriented as s‐PVA content increases. Yield stress is higher for s‐PVA/a‐PVA blend solutions with larger s‐PVA content at similar (Pn)s and (DS)s of polymer. This indicates that more domains with internal order are produced at larger s‐PVA content in s‐PVA/a‐PVA blend solutions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of composition, molecular weight, and milling temperature on homogeneity, gas permeability, selectivity of oxygen/nitrogen, and mechanical strength of the TPX/siloxane blend membranes were studied. By adjusting the blending conditions and hence controlling the homogeneity, the gas permeability of TPX membrane was significantly improved without loss of oxygen/nitrogen selectivity. The oxygen permeability of 1.57 × 10?8 cm3 (STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and the oxygen/nitrogen permeation ratio of 6.92 can be obtained under the condition of TPX (MX-001)/siloxane (75,000 MW) = 9/1 at 65°C milling temperature. This membrane possesses 133 kg/cm2 tensile strength and 92% elongation. The morphology of the blend membranes was studied.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) of chitosan (Chi) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAA)-modified iron sand leachate were prepared and considered for applicability as a proton exchange membrane in fuel cells. Chi-PAA-hematite blended in different weight ratios and the resulting membranes were treated to enable the formation of the polyelectrolyte. The membranes of Chi-PAA polyblend were treated using iron sand leachate and reveal high ion exchange capacity (IEC), proton conductivity, water uptake, and good mechanical stability. The result of research indicated that the membrane with 40 wt% of Chi and 60 wt% of PAA blend which its conductivity of 6.10 × 10?2 S cm?1 was potentially for a proton exchange membrane in fuel cell applications.  相似文献

To improve the hydrophilicity and enhance the transport flux of nylon 4 membrane for dialysis, this study attempts to utilize blending nylon 4 with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The instability of PVA in water can be obtained more easily than by other methods, such as chemical, γ-ray irradiated crosslinking, or high-temperature treatment used by previous researchers. The effects of maturation time of the casting solution, nylon 4/PVA ratios, and casting solvent compositions on esterification of PVA, salt permeability, water content, partition coefficient, diffusivity, and mechanical strength of membrances are studied. The membrane, prepared by casting solution of nylon 4/PVA = 9/1 wt % formic acid with 24-h maturation time, possesses permeabilities of NaCl and urea, 33.14 and 19.67 × 10?5 cm2/min, respectively.  相似文献
