Traditionally, reliability based design optimization (RBDO) is formulated as a nested optimization problem. For these problems the objective is to minimize a cost function while satisfying the reliability constraints. The reliability constraints are usually formulated as constraints on the probability of failure corresponding to each of the failure modes or a single constraint on the system probability of failure. The probability of failure is usually estimated by performing a reliability analysis. The difficulty in evaluating reliability constraints comes from the fact that modern reliability analysis methods are themselves formulated as an optimization problem. Solving such nested optimization problems is extremely expensive for large scale multidisciplinary systems which are likewise computationally intensive. In this research, a framework for performing reliability based multidisciplinary design optimization using approximations is developed. Response surface approximations (RSA) of the limit state functions are used to estimate the probability of failure. An outer loop is incorporated to ensure that the approximate RBDO converges to the actual most probable point of failure. The framework is compared with the exact RBDO procedure. In the proposed methodology, RSAs are employed to significantly reduce the computational expense associated with traditional RBDO. The proposed approach is implemented in application to multidisciplinary test problems, and the computational savings and benefits are discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to present an efficient computational methodology for the reliability optimization of electronic devices under cost constraints. The system modeling for calculating the reliability indices of the electronic devices is based on Bayesian networks using the fault tree approach, in order to overcome the limitations of the series–parallel topology of the reliability block diagrams. Furthermore, the Bayesian network modeling for the reliability analysis provides greater flexibility for representing multiple failure modes and dependent failure events, and simplifies fault diagnosis and reliability allocation. The optimal selection of components is obtained using the simulated annealing algorithm, which has proved to be highly efficient in complex optimization problems where gradient‐based methods can not be applied. The reliability modeling and optimization methodology was implemented into a computer program in Matlab using a Bayesian network toolbox. The methodology was applied for the optimal selection of components for an electrical switch of power installations under reliability and cost constraints. The full enumeration of the solution space was calculated in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed optimization algorithm. The results obtained are excellent since a near optimum solution was found in a small fraction of the time needed for the complete enumeration (3%). All the optimum solutions found during consecutive runs of the optimization algorithm lay in the top 0.3% of the solutions that satisfy the reliability and cost constraints. In reliability based design optimization, a methodology for finding optimized designs characterized with a low probability of failure the main objective is to minimize a merit function while satisfying the reliability constraints. Traditionally, these have been formulated as a double-loop (nested) optimization problem, which is computationally intensive. A new efficient unilevel formulation for reliability based design optimization was developed by the authors in earlier studies, where the lower-level optimization was replaced by its corresponding first-order Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) necessary optimality conditions at the upper-level optimization and imposed as equality constraints. But as most commercial optimizers are usually numerically unreliable when applied to problems accompanied by many equality constraints, an optimization framework for reliability based design using the unilevel formulation is developed here. Homotopy methods are used for constraint relaxation and to obtain a relaxed feasible design and heuristic scheme is employed to update the homotopy parameter.  相似文献

In this paper, we take a design-led perspective on the use of computational tools in the aerospace sector. We briefly review the current state-of-the-art in design search and optimization (DSO) as applied to problems from aerospace engineering, focusing on those problems that make heavy use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This ranges over issues of representation, optimization problem formulation and computational modelling. We then follow this with a multi-objective, multi-disciplinary example of DSO applied to civil aircraft wing design, an area where this kind of approach is becoming essential for companies to maintain their competitive edge. Our example considers the structure and weight of a transonic civil transport wing, its aerodynamic performance at cruise speed and its manufacturing costs. The goals are low drag and cost while holding weight and structural performance at acceptable levels. The constraints and performance metrics are modelled by a linked series of analysis codes, the most expensive of which is a CFD analysis of the aerodynamics using an Euler code with coupled boundary layer model. Structural strength and weight are assessed using semi-empirical schemes based on typical airframe company practice. Costing is carried out using a newly developed generative approach based on a hierarchical decomposition of the key structural elements of a typical machined and bolted wing-box assembly. To carry out the DSO process in the face of multiple competing goals, a recently developed multi-objective probability of improvement formulation is invoked along with stochastic process response surface models (Krigs). This approach both mitigates the significant run times involved in CFD computation and also provides an elegant way of balancing competing goals while still allowing the deployment of the whole range of single objective optimizers commonly available to design teams.  相似文献

This article proposes an uncertain multi-objective multidisciplinary design optimization methodology, which employs the interval model to represent the uncertainties of uncertain-but-bounded parameters. The interval number programming method is applied to transform each uncertain objective function into two deterministic objective functions, and a satisfaction degree of intervals is used to convert both the uncertain inequality and equality constraints to deterministic inequality constraints. In doing so, an unconstrained deterministic optimization problem will be constructed in association with the penalty function method. The design will be finally formulated as a nested three-loop optimization, a class of highly challenging problems in the area of engineering design optimization. An advanced hierarchical optimization scheme is developed to solve the proposed optimization problem based on the multidisciplinary feasible strategy, which is a well-studied method able to reduce the dimensions of multidisciplinary design optimization problems by using the design variables as independent optimization variables. In the hierarchical optimization system, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, sequential quadratic programming method and Gauss–Seidel iterative approach are applied to the outer, middle and inner loops of the optimization problem, respectively. Typical numerical examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.  相似文献

This study presents an efficient methodology that derives design alternatives and performance criteria for safety functions/systems in commercial nuclear power plants. Determination of the design alternatives and intermediate-level performance criteria is posed as a reliability allocation problem. The reliability allocation is performed in a single step by means of the concept of two-tier noninferior solutions in the objective and risk spaces within the top-level probabilistic safety criteria (PSC). Two kinds of two-tier noninferior solutions are obtained: desirable design alternatives and intolerable intermediate-level PSC of safety functions/systems.The weighted Chebyshev norm (WCN) approach with an improved Metropolis algorithm in simulated annealing is used to find the two-tier noninferior solutions. This is very efficient in searching for the global minimum of the difficult multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) which results from strong nonlinearity of a probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) model and nonconvexity of the problem. The methodology developed in this study can be used as an efficient design tool for desirable safety function/system alternatives and for the determination of intermediate-level performance criteria.The methodology is applied to a realistic streamlined PSA model that is developed based on the PSA results of the Surry Unit 1 nuclear power plant. The methodology developed in this study is very efficient in providing the intolerable intermediate-level PSC and desirable design alternatives of safety functions/systems.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how a combination of design optimization theory and methodology can be applied to large-scaled industrial systems to efficiently improve their performance, reduce their costs or improve other design objectives. The scheme described was developed when other conventional design and optimization strategies failed in efficiently optimizing an air-to-air missile design for Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control. The efficient design scheme was developed for the system using a combination of optimization and design of experiment techniques. It will be shown that multidisciplinary design optimization techniques can be improved with a dependency-tracking demand-driven language resulting in an attractive choice for solving industrial type design problems. The design methodology holds true even for systems in which a large number of disciplinary design and analysis software are integrated. One reason for the efficiency of the scheme is the parameterized dependency-tracking environment in which the optimizations are carried out. With the hybrid approach developed, combining exploration and optimization techniques with the unique dependency-tracking and demand driven features of the environment, it was possible to reduce the computational time by as much as 44%. The design scheme developed and presented can be used to improve the design and optimization process for numerous other engineering applications.  相似文献

Traditional risk-based design process involves designing the structure based on risk estimates obtained during several iterations of an optimization routine. This approach is computationally expensive for large-scale aircraft structural systems. Therefore, this paper introduces the concept of risk-based design plots that can be used for both structural sizing and risk assessment for fracture strength when maximum allowable crack length is available. In situations when crack length is defined as a probability distribution the presented approach can only be applied for various percentiles of crack lengths. These plots are obtained using normalized probability density models of load and material properties and are applicable for any arbitrary load and strength values. Risk-based design plots serve as a tool for failure probability assessment given geometry and applied load or they can determine geometric constraints to be used in sizing given allowable failure probability. This approach would transform a reliability-based optimization problem into a deterministic optimization problem with geometric constraints that implicitly incorporate risk into the design. In this paper, cracked flat plate and stiffened plate are used to demonstrate the methodology and its applicability.  相似文献

This paper presents a multiobjective optimization methodology for composite stiffened panels. The purpose is to improve the performances of an existing design of stiffened composite panels in terms of both its first buckling load and ultimate collapse or failure loads. The design variables are the stacking sequences of the skin and of the stiffeners of the panel. The optimization is performed using a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm specifically developed for the design of laminated parts. The algorithm takes into account the industrial design guidelines for stacking sequence design. An original method is proposed for the initialization of the optimization that significantly accelerates the search for the Pareto front. In order to reduce the calculation time, Radial Basis Functions under Tension are used to approximate the objective functions. Special attention is paid to generalization errors around the optimum. The multiobjective optimization results in a wide set of trade-offs, offering important improvements for both considered objectives, among which the designer can make a choice.  相似文献

Automatic design optimization is highly sensitive to problem formulation. The choice of objective function, constraints and design parameters can dramatically impact on the computational cost of optimization and the quality of the resulting design. The best formulation varies from one application to another. A design engineer will usually not know the best formulation in advance. To address this problem, we have developed a system that supports interactive formulation, testing and reformulation of design optimization strategies. Our system includes an executable, data-flow language for representing optimization strategies. The language allows an engineer to define multiple stages of optimization, each using different approximations of the objective and constraints or different abstractions of the design space. We have also developed a set of transformations that reformulate strategies represented in our language. The transformations can approximate objective and constraint functions, abstract or reparameterize search spaces, or divide an optimization process into multiple stages. The system is applicable in principle to any design problem that can be expressed in terms of constrained optimization; however, we expect the system to be most useful when the design artifact is governed by algebraic and ordinary differential equations. We have tested the system on problems of racing yacht design and jet engine nozzle design. We report experimental results demonstrating that our reformulation techniques can significantly improve the performance of automatic design optimization. Our research demonstrates the viability of a reformulation methodology that combines symbolic program transformation with numerical experimentation. It is an important first step in a research program aimed at automating the entire strategy formulation process.  相似文献

This paper addresses the challenge of design optimization under uncertainty when the designer only has limited data to characterize uncertain variables. We demonstrate that the error incurred when estimating a probability distribution from limited data affects the out-of-sample performance (ie, performance under the true distribution) of optimized designs. We demonstrate how this can be mitigated by reformulating the engineering design problem as a distributionally robust optimization (DRO) problem. We present computationally efficient algorithms for solving the resulting DRO problem. The performance of the DRO approach is explored in a practical setting by applying it to an acoustic horn design problem. The DRO approach is compared against traditional approaches to optimization under uncertainty, namely, sample-average approximation and multiobjective optimization incorporating a risk reduction objective. In contrast with the multiobjective approach, the proposed DRO approach does not use an explicit risk reduction objective but rather specifies a so-called ambiguity set of possible distributions and optimizes against the worst-case distribution in this set. Our results show that the DRO designs, in some cases, significantly outperform those designs found using the sample-average or the multiobjective approach.  相似文献

The multiobjective ant colony system (ACS) meta-heuristic has been developed to provide solutions for the reliability optimization problem of series-parallel systems. This type of problems involves selection of components with multiple choices and redundancy levels that produce maximum benefits, and is subject to the cost and weight constraints at the system level. These are very common and realistic problems encountered in conceptual design of many engineering systems. It is becoming increasingly important to develop efficient solutions to these problems because many mechanical and electrical systems are becoming more complex, even as development schedules get shorter and reliability requirements become very stringent. The multiobjective ACS algorithm offers distinct advantages to these problems compared with alternative optimization methods, and can be applied to a more diverse problem domain with respect to the type or size of the problems. Through the combination of probabilistic search, multiobjective formulation of local moves and the dynamic penalty method, the multiobjective ACSRAP, allows us to obtain an optimal design solution very frequently and more quickly than with some other heuristic approaches. The proposed algorithm was successfully applied to an engineering design problem of gearbox with multiple stages.  相似文献

This paper presents a methodology to solve a new class of stochastic optimization problems for multidisciplinary systems (multidisciplinary stochastic optimization or MSO) wherein the objective is to maximize system mechanical performance (e.g. aerodynamic efficiency) while satisfying reliability-based constraints (e.g. structural safety). Multidisciplinary problems require a different solution approach than those solved in earlier research in reliability-based structural optimization (single discipline) wherein the goal is usually to minimize weight (or cost) for a structural configuration subject to a limiting probability of failure or to minimize probability of failure subject to a limiting weight (or cost). For the problems solved herein, the objective is to maximize performance over the range of operating conditions, while satisfying constraints that ensure safe and reliable operation. Because the objective is performance based and because the constraints are reliability based, the random variables used in the objective must model variability in operating conditions, while the random variables used in the constraints must model uncertainty in extreme values (to ensure safety). Thus, the problem must be formulated to treat these two different types of variables at the same time, including the case when the same physical quantity (e.g. a particular load) appears in both the objective function and the constraints. In addition, the problem must be formulated to treat multiple load cases, which can again require modeling the same physical quantity with different random variables. Deterministic multidisciplinary optimization (MDO) problems have advanced to the stage where they are now commonly formulated with multiple load cases and multiple disciplines governing the objective and constraints. This advancement has enabled MDO to solve more realistic problems of much more practical interest. The formulation used herein solves stochastic optimization problems that are posed in this same way, enabling similar practical benefits but, in addition, producing optimum designs that are more robust than the deterministic optimum designs (since uncertainties are accounted for during the optimization process). The methodology has been implemented in the form of a baseline MSO shell that executes on both a massively parallel computer and a network of workstations. The MSO shell is demonstrated herein by a stochastic shape optimization of an axial compressor blade involving fully coupled aero-structural analysis.  相似文献

A multiobjective approach to the combined structure and control optimization problem for flexible space structures is presented. The proposed formulation addresses robustness considerations for controller design, as well as a simultaneous determination of optimum actuator locations. The structural weight, controlled system energy, stability robustness index and damping augmentation provided by the active controller are considered as objective functions of the multiobjective problem which is solved using a cooperative game-theoretic approach. The actuator locations and the cross-sectional areas of structural members are treated as design variables. Since the actuator locations are spatially discrete, whereas the cross-sectional areas are continuous, the optimization problem has mixed discrete-continuous design variables. A solution approach to this problem based on a hybrid optimization scheme is presented. The hybrid optimizer is a synergetic blend of artificial genetic search and gradient-based search techniques. The computational procedure is demonstrated through the design of an ACOSS-FOUR space structure. The optimum solutions obtained using the hybrid optimizer are shown to outperform the optimum results obtained using gradient-based search techniques.  相似文献

During the lifetime of any system, e.g. an electronic circuit, sources of variation of parameters include fabrication, operational and environmental (FOE) variables. Since these sources of variation are not under designer control, one important objective at the product design stage is to reduce rather than control their influence. The aim of this paper is to present a methodology whereby settings of system parameters which make product performance less sensitive to FOE variations are identified. By so doing, reliability (consistency of acceptable performance), and hence quality, is enhanced. The approach taken is to minimize performance variability subject to a constraint on yield. This objective ensures consistency of performance while the constraint ensures acceptability of performance. Multiple performances are handled via a weighted sum objective. The Monte Carlo approach ensures that any parameter probability density function is handled and that computational cost does not increase with system dimensionality. The effectiveness of the technique is illustrated via a practical system example—an electronic circuit having 11 design parameters.  相似文献

A design procedure for integrating topological considerations in the framework of structural optimization is presented. The proposed approach is capable of considering multiple load conditions, stress, displacement and local/global buckling constraints, and multiple objective functions in the problem formulation. Further, since the proposed method permits members to be added to or deleted from an existing topology and the topology is not defined by member areas, the difficulty of not being able to reach singular optima is also avoided. These objectives are accomplished using a discrete optimization procedure which uses 0–1 topological variables to optimize alternate designs. Since the topological variables are discrete in nature and the member cross-sections are assumed to be continuous, the topological optimization problem has mixed discrete-continuous variables. This non-linear programming problem is solved using a memory-based combinatorial optimization technique known as tabu search. Numerical results obtained using tabu search for single and multiobjective topological optimization of truss structures are presented. To model the multiple objective functions in the problem formulation, a cooperative game theoretic approach is used. The results indicate that the optimum topologies obtained using tabu search compare favourably, and in some instances, outperform the results obtained using the ground–structure approach. However, this improvement occurs at the expense of a significant increase in computational burden owing to the fact that the proposed approach necessitates that the geometry of each trial topology be optimized.  相似文献

We have adapted an advanced semistochastic evolutionary algorithm for constrained multiobjective optimization and combined it with experimental testing and verification to determine optimum concentrations of alloying elements in heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel alloys and superalloys that will simultaneously maximize a number of the alloy's mechanical properties. The optimization algorithm allows for a finite number of ingredients in the alloy to be optimized so that a finite number of physical properties of the alloy are either minimized or maximized, while satisfying a finite number of equality and inequality constraints. Alternatively, an inverse design method was developed, which uses the same optimization algorithm to determine chemical compositions of alloys that will be able to sustain a specified level of stress at a given temperature for a specified length of time. The main benefits of the self-adapting response surface optimization algorithm are its outstanding reliability in avoiding local minimums, its computational speed, ability to work with realistic nonsmooth variations of experimentally obtained data and for accurate interpolation of such data, and a significantly reduced number of required experimentally evaluated alloy samples compared with more traditional gradient-based and genetic optimization algorithms. Experimentally preparing samples of the optimized alloys and testing them have verified the superior performance of alloy compositions determined by this multiobjective optimization.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of capturing Pareto optimal points on non-convex Pareto frontiers, which are encountered in nonlinear multiobjective optimization problems in computational engineering design optimization. The emphasis is on the choice of the aggregate objective function (AOF) of the objectives that is employed to capture Pareto optimal points. A fundamental property of the aggregate objective function, the admissibility property, is developed and its equivalence to the coordinatewise increasing property is established. Necessary and sufficient conditions for such an admissible aggregate objective function to capture Pareto optimal points are derived. Numerical examples illustrate these conditions in the biobjective case. This paper demonstrates in general terms the limitation of the popular weighted-sum AOF approach, which captures only convex Pareto frontiers, and helps us understand why some commonly used AOFs cannot capture desirable Pareto optimal points, and how to avoid this situation in practice. Since nearly all applications of optimization in engineering design involve the formation of AOFs, this paper is of direct theoretical and practical usefulness.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

To address multiobjective, multi constraint and time-consuming structural optimization problems in a vehicle axle system, a multiobjective cooperative optimization model of a vehicle axle structure is established. In light of the difficulty in the nondominated sorting of the NSGA-II algorithm caused by inconsistent effects of the uniformity objective function and physical objective function, this paper combines a multiobjective genetic algorithm with cooperative optimization and presents a strategy for handling the optimization of a vehicle axle structure. The uniformity objective function of the sub discipline is transformed to its self-constraint. Taking the multiobjective optimization of a vehicle axle system as an example, a multiobjective cooperative optimization design for the system is carried out in ISIGHT. The results show that the multiobjective cooperative optimization strategy can simplify the complexity of optimization problems and that the multiobjective cooperative optimization method based on an approximate model is favorable for accuracy and efficiency, thereby providing a theoretical basis for the optimization of similar complex structures in practical engineering.  相似文献

Robust design is an efficient method for product and process improvement which combines experimentation with optimization to create a system that is less sensitive to uncontrollable variation. In this article, a simple and integrated modeling methodology for robust design is proposed. This methodology achieves the robustness objective function and input variables constraints simultaneously. The objective function is written in terms of the multivariate process capability vector (MCpm) of several competing features of the system under study. The proposed methodology is applicable to general functions of the system performance with random variables.
