Turnover Intention of Technology Professionals: A Social Exchange Theory Perspective

Retaining skilled professionals is a critical concern for organizations because employee turnover can affect the quality of service provided by the organization and create considerable expense. Using a framework of social exchange theory, this study develops a model to investigate the interrelationships between turnover intentions, organizational commitment, and constructs of particular importance to information technology (IT) professionals. Field survey data from a large US federal agency empirically test these associations. The results confirm that IT professionals’ perceptions of their skill obsolescence, work overload, and the fairness of the rewards they receive directly influence their organizational commitment. Furthermore, their organizational commitment, perceived work overload, and fairness of rewards significantly affect turnover intention. Employees’ commitment toward the organization is an essential mediator between the perception that their skills are becoming obsolete and intention to leave the organization. Implications of these results for literature and practice are discussed.

Learning Virtual Community Loyalty Behavior From a Perspective of Social Cognitive Theory

Drawing upon social cognitive theory (SCT), this research postulates several personal and environmental factors as key drivers of virtual community loyalty behavior in online settings. An empirical testing of this model, by investigating undergraduate students' participation in communities of online games, reveals the applicability of SCT in virtual communities. The study's test results show that the influences of both affective commitment and social norms on community loyalty behavior are significant, whereas the influences of both exchange ideology and social support on community loyalty behavior are insignificant. This research contributes to the online community literature by assessing critical antecedent factors to the unexplored area of community loyalty behavior, by validating idiosyncratic drivers of community loyalty behavior and by performing an operationalization of affective commitment and social norms in a virtual world. Last, managerial implications and limitations of this research are provided.

Impact of Ergonomic and Social Psychological Perspective: A Case Study of Fashion Technology Adoption in Taiwan

Recently, there have been dramatic and emerging innovations in portable media devices. This is evident, for example, with the Apple iPod, Microsoft Zune, Sony Walkman, and the Samsung and iriver media players. Because of this, how to best understand the users' intentions to adopt these fashionable technologies has become a new issue in the information technology domain. However, in the literature, little is published about what motivates people to adopt these innovative technologies. To address this issue, this research sought to come up with a model by integrating key variables from the role of ergonomic and social psychological facets on estimates of the fashion technology acceptance. A structural equation modeling approach was used to examine 10 hypotheses in the proposed model. The results indicated that usefulness, playfulness, and aesthetics from the ergonomic facet and critical mass from the social psychological perspective positively contributed to the users' intent to adopt the fashion technology. Furthermore, the perceived ease of use indirectly affects adoptive intentions through perceived usefulness and playfulness. Important implications of these findings are discussed from both theoretical and practical aspects.

The Antikythera Mechanism: A Computer Science Perspective

Two thousand years separate us from an ancient Greek computing device known as the Antikythera mechanism. The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient astronomical calculator that contains a lunisolar calendar, predicts eclipses, and indicates the moon's position and phase. Its use of multiple dials and interlocking gears eerily foreshadows modern computing concepts from the fields of digital design, programming, and software engineering. In this article, the author explains the mechanism's operation based on its reconstruction in Squeak Etoys, a multimedia authoring environment primarily designed to help high school students learn scientific and engineering concepts. This paper aims to present the functioning of this remarkable device using working code, the language of our community.     

Information and Communication Technology Offshoring Logistics Success: A Social Exchange Perspective

As emerging countries continue to enhance the education of their workforce and modernize their infrastructures, the opportunities the information and communication technology offshoring increase. This research offers a perspective on the client–vendor relationship using social exchange theory. Our findings show that partnership mediates the relationships between communication, lack of trust, shared values, and offshoring logistics success. In addition, shared values increase trust, whereas power and partnership influence the success of offshoring logistics.

Impact of Users’ Security Awareness on Desktop Security Behavior: A Protection Motivation Theory Perspective

This article uses the protection motivation theory to study the impact of information security awareness on desktop security behavior. It contributes to the literature by examining the roles played by awareness, an important antecedent to the cognitive processes in the protection motivation theory. The findings indicate that security awareness significantly affects perceived severity, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and response cost. Constructs in the coping appraisal process (except response cost), in turn, significantly impact recommended security behavior.     

Interactive Persuasive Systems: A Perspective on Theory and Evaluation

Interactive systems are increasingly used in a growing number of domains to encourage users to perform certain actions or take a certain position toward a given subject. This article offers a perspective on interactive persuasive systems that emphasizes theories and concepts that can guide their design and evaluation. The goal is not to champion a theoretical model over others or to compare the effectiveness of different persuasive strategies but rather to depict the current conceptual landscape in this field and highlight emerging concepts and positions that have recently appeared in it. The article includes a discussion of some representative, general, and domain-specific constructs that can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of interactive persuasive systems.

Mapping Sentiments to Themes of Customer reactions on Social Media during a Security Hack: A Justice Theory Perspective

As social media continues to transform firm–customer interactions, firms must leverage customer reactions to generate actionable insights, especially in contexts (e.g., crisis events) where customer reactions are critical. Using the justice theory, we categorize customer reactions of two firms, Home Depot and Target, during the time-frame of a security hack to understand key themes/topics. We then map the themes/topics to customer sentiments in those reactions. We found that customers associate justice with simple procedures than the experience of dealing with the firm. In addition, it is critical for firms to carefully assess and control customer sentiments on social media during crisis events.     

Cultural Entrepreneurship: The Impact of Social Networking on Success

Because of the complex structures characteristic of the arts sector and creative industries, it is often thought that external network ties of leading managers are critical to the success of their cultural enterprises. Based on research into entrepreneurship and promoters' activity, this study examines the influence of social network relationships on the success of cultural establishments in Germany. The regression analysis of data from 121 private arts and culture ventures presented here clearly shows that founders as well as managers can overcome numerous barriers through their engagement and activity in social networks, and thereby exercise to a significant degree a positive influence on establishing their enterprise. As expected, this effect is even stronger in cases of low sponsorship of cultural activities on the part of cities and communities. Contrary to expectations, the positive effect of intensive networking activities is not increased by a high intensity of competition; it is worth noting that the effect is strongest in situations of low competitive pressure. The results of this study demonstrate that successful networking expertise, as postulated by research into promoters' activity, is of great importance for overcoming significant barriers in the cultural sector, but that its effectiveness also has limits.     

Urban Social Change in Transitional China: A Perspective of Social Exclusion and Vulnerability

Since the late 1970s, China has experienced rapid economic growth and urbanisation. However, in recent years, various social pressures and tensions began to hold down the optimism buttressed by the economic growth. There are signs showing that the basis of sustained economic growth—rich labour supply and stable social conditions will unavoidably suffer from the lagging social reforms targeting the inequality and vulnerability of migrant workers. This paper argues that the discussion of social exclusion and its risks as a potential threat to urban stability in the Chinese context should consider the deprivation of various rights, including political, social and economic rights and be extended to rural‐urban migrants who do not necessarily enjoy urban citizenship. The paper suggests that there need be major policy changes in order to integrate rural‐urban migrants into the “mainstream” of the urban society.     

Sharing of Sponsored Advertisements on Social Media: A Uses and Gratifications Perspective

Organisations are increasingly utilising social media to advertise to, and interact with, consumers. Sponsored advertisements embedded into targeted users’ social media feeds appear less invasive than standalone advertisements but, unlike organic postings, incur financial cost. Given that friends’ posts attract most attention, this research employs Uses and Gratifications theory to determine salient motivations for users’ intentions to share sponsored advertisements, framed in the tourism context. Survey data was collected (n?=?487) and analysis revealed altruism, entertainment, socialising, and information seeking to be significant positive drivers of intention to share tourism-related sponsored advertisements on Facebook. Notably, information sharing was found to have a negative effect, while self-expression had no significant effect. In addition, the motivations were not found to significantly differ between males and females. This study contributes to theoretical understanding of users’ intentions to share sponsored advertisements within the social media environment and provides practical recommendations to help tourism marketers maximise reach.
