AbstractMany enterprises encounter difficulty in managing strategic goals and performance measures because of a lack of a systemic and objective procedure and method. Action research was conducted through a case study approach at a mining company to investigate this problem regarding performance measurement and management (PMM) and to identify potential solutions for application. This research proposes a multiple-technique approach (including the Delphi method, analytic network process, system dynamics simulation, dashboard visualization, and radio frequency identification tracking techniques) and a creative implementation framework for overcoming the shortcomings within a case company and those in the relevant performance measurement literature. This study demonstrates a step-by-step approach for establishing a PMM system using a real case example. Furthermore, for sustaining the effectiveness and efficiency of the PMM system, key performance indicators (KPIs) were continually monitored against a changing operational environment through design, measurement, analysis, and improvement processes to address problem areas occurring in the production and maintenance departments of a mining company. The benefits of the PMM system in practice are demonstrated by the outcomes of the mining company, with noticeable improvements observed in many KPIs. 相似文献

Abstract:Enterprise risk management (ERM) has emerged as the new paradigm in risk management with the goal of holistically managing all risks facing an enterprise. Yet organizations still manage risks in a piece-meal fashion and struggle to effectively implement ERM and manage complex strategic risks. This article proposes a solution to this problem: ERM implementation using a system dynamics approach, which enables integrating risks in a causal modeling environment that includes feedback and delays. AbstractRecent studies of the innovation process within firms draw a distinction between “sustaining” and “disruptive” technological change. Government incentives designed to encourage research and development (R&D) activities may interact with the organizational structure of firms developing disruptive technologies. This study finds evidence from companies involved with design and manufacture of microelectromechanical-systems (MEMS) that practical concerns in raising capital may supersede utilizing tax incentives. AbstractThis article addresses the need for developing long-term learning abilities in Lean production: dynamic capabilities. Despite Lean’s remarkable popularity, implementation efforts often emphasize short-term efficiency over developing dynamic capabilities necessary for long-term success. This article advances the understanding of dynamic capabilities in Lean based on a longitudinal in-depth case study at a manufacturing facility. The article shows that dynamic capabilities develop through the development of an organizational setting for improvement activities, termed the improvement system. The improvement system’s effectiveness is characterized by the coherence between participants, technology, management, and organization, and between the improvement system and the work system. 相似文献

This article aims to identify the main risk factors that are threats to meet the objectives of tunnel construction projects by using the Chilean construction industry as a case study and proposes a methodology to evaluate risk factors in this type of project. Surveys were used to generate probability and severity indexes to rank 36 risk factors. Data were collected from 14 companies that are members of the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association. The results indicate that the main risk factors that hinder achieving the tunneling construction project objectives are (1) inaccurate cost estimation or lack of detail in budget preparation, (2) unexpected geological conditions, (3) inaccurate deadline estimation or insufficient breakdown of the project schedule, (4) frequent malfunction of construction equipment, (5) excessive delays in approval processes by government entities, and (6) unexpected soil conditions and water table. Furthermore, a comprehensive literature review is provided to compare these results to international perspectives to confirm the existence of risks inherent to tunnel construction projects. This article concludes with revisiting the risk factors, which are common for the construction industry in general. 相似文献

An enhanced scheme of transcribing the system dynamics for the numerical solution of optimal control problems is proposed. This new scheme is based on the standard method of direct collocation that converts an optimal control problem into a nonlinear programming problem via simultaneous state and control discretization. When compared with the standard method, the enhanced scheme has the advantage of higher solution accuracy with minimal additional computational effort. It is particularly suited for systems with states that are related to each other in a special form. For such systems, the ensuing nonlinear programming problem has the same number of constraints as those using the standard method. Manufacturing organizations are constantly striving to develop more effective and flexible means for managing challenges due to globalization and increasing customer expectations. This has led to increased efforts by the business community to research and implement the Toyota Production System, or lean manufacturing, to address these challenges. These efforts have resulted in numerous publications on lean manufacturing, including research reports, scholarly articles, and trade magazine articles. However, the existing body of knowledge on lean manufacturing is disperse and diverse in nature with respect to the application and implementation of lean tools and practices, making it difficult for researchers and practitioners to gain a real grasp of this topic. In this article, we have comprehensively organized the existing work on implementation of lean manufacturing in a more structured way, enabling engineering management practitioners to more easily identify knowledge and best practices and enabling researchers to identify gaps in the extant literature. Lastly, drawing from the organizational science literature, this article also provides important insights on lean manufacturing from the perspective of organizational learning, innovation, and \culture. 相似文献

In the paper a concept of an equivalent normal ball stiffness based on averaging the work done by the nonlinear Hertz force during the impact is introduced and a numerical assessment is made on its efficiency in simulating collinear collisions. The systems of balls investigated, ranging from 2 to 30, are considered to be coupled and conservative. The energy and momentum conservation principles are used to assess the accuracy of simulation results. The effect of the time step for both linear and nonlinear models is investigated and it is shown that the linear model allows an increased time step compared to a nonlinear one while meeting energy and momentum conservation requirements with the same accuracy. In the paper also the pattern of break up for both models and different number of balls is investigated. It is found that for both models the pattern is the same: the balls are disconnected one at the time with constant rate and this rate does not depend on the number of balls.

Abstract:This research article provides valuable insights for practicing engineering managers on improving a firm's performance by applying a knowledge management (KM) based approach to quality management (QM). Traditional quality management systems do not provide sufficient knowledge management and knowledge creation opportunities for manufacturing firms to stay competitive in today's fast paced, unpredictable, complex, and rapidly changing global business environment. The world's body of knowledge does not include a quality management strategy where KM is integrated in QM, and where the effectiveness of such a KM/QM strategy is determined through quantitative empirical research over a defined time frame, thus omitting important performance improvement opportunities for manufacturing firms. The objective in addressing this research topic is to present a KM/QM strategy and to demonstrate its effectiveness. Engineering management areas, such as knowledge management and quality management, are leveraged throughout this research. Systems engineering aspects, such as operational efficiency improvement and system performance, are leveraged by integrating knowledge management and quality management to form an enhanced quality management system. The research demonstrates that a company with a KM/QM strategy is more effective than a company which does not have a KM/QM strategy, that the implementation of a KM/QM strategy contributes to product quality improvements over KM/QM strategy application time, and presents a framework that can be applied by practicing engineering managers. 相似文献
