Heat transfer enhancement capabilities of coolants with suspended metallic nanoparticles inside typical radial flow cooling systems are numerically investigated in this paper. The laminar forced convection flow of these nanofluids between two coaxial and parallel disks with central axial injection has been considered using temperature dependent nanofluid properties. Results clearly indicate that considerable heat transfer benefits are possible with the use of these fluid/solid particle mixtures. For example, a Water/Al2O3 nanofluid with a volume fraction of nanoparticles as low as 4% can produce a 25% increase in the average wall heat transfer coefficient when compared to the base fluid alone (i.e., water). Furthermore, results show that considerable differences are found when using constant property nanofluids (temperature independent) versus nanofluids with temperature dependent properties. The use of temperature-dependent properties make for greater heat transfer predictions with corresponding decreases in wall shear stresses when compared to predictions using constant properties. With an increase in wall heat flux, it was found that the average heat transfer coefficient increases whilst the wall shear stress decreases for cases using temperature-dependent nanofluid properties.  相似文献

Boiling heat transfer performance of nanofluid has been studied during the past few years. Some controversial results are reported in literature about the potential impact of nanofluids on heat transfer intensification. Whereas the mixtures of ethylene glycol and water are considered the most common water-based antifreeze solutions used in automotive cooling systems, the present study is an experimental investigation of boiling heat transfer of CuO/ethylene glycol–water (60/40) nanofluids. The results indicate that a considerable boiling heat transfer enhancement has been achieved by nanofluid and the enhancement increases with nanoparticles concentration and reaches 55% at a nanoparticles loading of 0.5%.

Water and ethylene glycol as conventional coolants have been widely used in an automotive car radiator for many years. These heat transfer fluids offer low thermal conductivity. With the advancement of nanotechnology, the new generation of heat transfer fluids called, “nanofluids” have been developed and researchers found that these fluids offer higher thermal conductivity compared to that of conventional coolants. This study focused on the application of ethylene glycol based copper nanofluids in an automotive cooling system. Relevant input data, nanofluid properties and empirical correlations were obtained from literatures to investigate the heat transfer enhancement of an automotive car radiator operated with nanofluid-based coolants. It was observed that, overall heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate in engine cooling system increased with the usage of nanofluids (with ethylene glycol the basefluid) compared to ethylene glycol (i.e. basefluid) alone. It is observed that, about 3.8% of heat transfer enhancement could be achieved with the addition of 2% copper particles in a basefluid at the Reynolds number of 6000 and 5000 for air and coolant respectively. In addition, the reduction of air frontal area was estimated.  相似文献

Heat exchangers have been widely used for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. Nanofluids are potential coolants, which can afford excellent thermal performance in heat exchangers. This study examined the effects of water and CuO/water nanofluids (as coolants) on heat transfer coefficient, heat transfer rate, frictional loss, pressure drop, pumping power and exergy destruction in the corrugated plate heat exchanger. The heat transfer coefficient of CuO/water nanofluids increased about 18.50 to 27.20% with the enhancement of nanoparticles volume concentration from 0.50 to 1.50% compared to water. Moreover, improvement in heat transfer rate was observed for nanofluids. On the other hand, exergy loss was reduced by 24% employing nanofluids as a heat transfer medium with comparing to conventional fluid. Besides, 34% higher exergetic heat transfer effectiveness was found for 1.5 vol.% of nanoparticles. It has a small penalty in the pumping power. Hence, the plate heat exchanger performance can be improved by adapting the working fluid with CuO/water nanofluids.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of heat transfer enhancement capabilities of coolants with suspended nanoparticles (Al2O3 dispersed in water) inside a radial flow cooling device. Steady, laminar radial flow of a nanofluid between a heated disk and a flat plate with axial coolant injection has been considered. An experimental test rig was built. Results show that heat transfer enhancements are possible in radial flow cooling systems with the use of nanofluids. In general, it was noticed that the Nusselt number increases with particle volume fraction and Reynolds number and decreases with an increase in disk spacing.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of nanofluids on reflood heat transfer in a hot vertical tube. The nanofluids, which are produced by dispersing nano-sized particles in traditional base fluids such as water, ethylene glycol, and engine oil, are expected to have a reasonable potential to enhance a heat transfer. 0.1 volume fraction (%) Al2O3/water nanofluid was prepared by two-step method and 0.1 volume fraction (%) carbon nano colloid (CNC) was prepared by the process self-dispersing by carboxyl formed particle surface. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images are acquired to characterize the shape and size of Al2O3 and graphite nanoparticles. The dispersion behavior of nanofluids was investigated with zeta potential values. And then, the reflood tests have been performed using water and nanofluids. We have observed a more enhanced cooling performance in the case of the nanofluid reflood. Consequently, the cooling performance is enhanced more than 13 s and 20 s for Al2O3/water nanofluid and CNC.  相似文献

In this study, numerical investigation of CuO/water nanofluids in a triple concentric-tube heat exchanger has been carried out using a commercial CFD software. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of water-based CuO nanofluids under turbulent flow regime. Reynolds number for the nanofluid has also been considered in the range of 2500 to 10,000 with a nanoparticle volume concentration of 0% to 3%. The effects of flow rate, volume concentration of nanoparticles, and flow arrangement on heat transfer performance of nanofluid have been studied for four flow arrangements. The comparison of the performance with and without nanofluid has been done. It was found that thermal performance and overall effectiveness increased with the increase in Reynolds number and volume concentration of nanoparticles in all the four flow arrangements for the considered range of operating parameters.  相似文献

Abstract

The overall heat transfer of a cross flow heat exchanger can be enhanced by using the nanofluids as coolant, which finds application in reducing the size and weight of automobile radiator. However, improving the heat transfer using nanofluids can be accompanied by simultaneous variations in the required pumping power. This study experimentally evaluates the thermo-hydraulic performance of three nanofluids—metallic (copper, aluminum) and nonmetallic (multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT))—as coolant for an automobile radiator by utilizing an in-house test rig. An enhancement in overall heat transfer coefficient can be observed with nanocoolants (nanofluid as coolant), compared to the de-ionized water at the same Reynolds number. The maximum enhancement in the overall heat transfer coefficient was observed to be 40, 29, and 25% for MWCNT, copper, and aluminum nanofluids, respectively. The thermal performance of coolants was also compared with the same pumping power criterion. The overall heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids were higher than basefluid at low pumping power range and the trend changes with increase in the pumping power. The present study shows that the heat transfer characteristics at the same Reynolds number as well as at the same pumping power needs to be considered for the selection of appropriate nanocoolant for automobile radiator application.  相似文献

An experimental report on the thermal performance of Silicone Dioxide (SiO2) nanofluid coolants based on a PEM fuel cell cooling system is presented. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of applying these nanofluids coolants as an alternative to conventional distilled water through detailed analysis of thermofluids behaviour in a simulated cooling plate environment. SiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed in distilled water at 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5% volume concentrations and tested in a parallel channel cooling plate system. A constant heat load was supplied to simulate a fuel cell stack thermal condition. At inlet flow conditions from 750 to 900 Reynolds number, the SiO2 nanofluids reduced the average plate temperatures by 15%–20% compared to conventional water coolant. The nanofluids also increased the cooling effectiveness by a similar margin, as well as improving the bulk heat transfer coefficient to a range between 2700 and 4400 W m−2. oC−1. However, the required pumping power was also increased due to the added viscous effect. Through the Advantage Ratio (AR) analysis, it was concluded that the enhancement in heat transfer mechanics was more significant than the penalties in fluid flow dynamics. Thus, the SiO2 nanofluids and the cooling plate design are possible options for advanced PEM fuel cell thermal management practice in future stack designs.  相似文献

Enhancement in heat transfer of the cold side is vital to amplify the performance of a thermoelectric generator (TEG). With enriched thermophysical properties of nanofluids, significant improvement in heat transfer process can be obtained. The current study concerns the performance comparison of an automobile waste heat recovery system with EG‐water (EG‐W) mixture, ZnO, and SiO2 nanofluid as coolants for the TEG system. The effects on performance parameters, that is, circuit voltage, conversion efficiency, and output power with exhaust inlet temperature, the total area of TEG, Reynolds number, and particle concentration of nanofluids for the TEG system have been investigated. A detailed performance analysis revealed an increase in voltage, power output, and conversion efficiency of the TEG system with SiO 2 nanofluid, followed by ZnO and EG‐W coolants. The electric power and conversion efficiency for SiO 2 nanofluid at an exhaust inlet temperature of 500K were enhanced by 11.80% and 11.39% respectively, in comparison with EG‐W coolants. Moreover, the model speculates that an optimal total area of TEGs exists for the maximum power output of the system. With SiO 2 nanofluid as a coolant, the total area of TEGs can be diminished by up to 34% as compared with EG‐W, which brings significant convenience for the placement of TEGs and reduces the cost of the TEG system.  相似文献

Nanofluid is a heat transfer fluid that can improve the performance of heat exchanger systems. Different parameters such as particle size, shape, and volume concentration affect the performance of these systems. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of different nanoparticle shapes (such as cylindrical, bricks, blades, platelets, and spherical) on the performance of a shell and tube heat exchanger operating with nanofluid analytically. Boehmite alumina (γ-AlOOH) nanoparticles of different shapes were dispersed in a mixture of water/ethylene glycol as the nanofluid. The thermodynamic performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger that is used in a waste heat recovery system was analysed in terms of heat transfer rate and entropy generation. Established correlations were used to measure the thermal conductivity, heat transfer coefficient and rate and entropy generation of nanofluid. The results show an increase in both the heat transfer and thermodynamic performance of the system. However, among the five nanoparticle shapes, cylindrical shape exhibited better heat transfer characteristics and heat transfer rate. On the other hand, entropy generation for nanofluids containing cylindrical shaped nanoparticles was higher in comparison with the other nanoparticle shapes. However, the increased percentage of entropy was below 1%. Therefore, this greater entropy generation could be deemed negligible and cylindrical shaped nanoparticles are recommended to be utilized in heat exchanger systems working with nanofluids.  相似文献

This study aims to evaluate the thermal performance and friction factor characteristics of the U-shaped serpentine microchannel heat sink using three different nanofluids. Two distinct nanoparticles, namely Al2O3 (alumina) and CuO (copper oxide), were used for the preparation of nanofluids using water and ethylene glycol (EG) as base fluids. Three nanofluids, namely nanofluid I (Al2O3 + water), nanofluid II (CuO + water), and nanofluid III (CuO + EG), have been prepared. The results showed that the thermal conductivity of nanofluids was increased for all concentrations (from 0.01 to 0.3%), compared with base fluids. The theoretical values derived from the relationship between the Darcy friction factor showed a clear understanding of the fully developed laminar flow. Thermal resistance for nanofluid III was lower than other nanofluids, resulting in a higher cooling efficiency. The nanofluid mechanism and the geometry of the U-shaped serpentine heat sink have led to the improvement in the thermal performance of electronic cooling systems.  相似文献

Analysis of microchannel heat sink performance using nanofluids   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study, silicon microchannel heat sink performance using nanofluids as coolants was analyzed. The nanofluid was a mixture of pure water and nanoscale Cu particles with various volume fractions. The heat transfer and friction coefficients required in the analysis were based on theoretical models and experimental correlations. In the theoretical model, nanofluid was treated as a single-phase fluid. In the experimental correlation, thermal dispersion due to particle random motion was included. The microchannel heat sink performances for two specific geometries, one with Wch = Wfin = 100 μm and Lch = 300 μm, the other with Wch = Wfin = 57 μm and Lch = 365 μm, were examined. Because of the increased thermal conductivity and thermal dispersion effects, it was found that the performances were greatly improved for these two specific geometries when nanofluids were used as the coolants. In addition to heat transfer enhancement, the existence of nanoparticles in the fluid did not produce extra pressure drop because of small particle size and low particle volume fraction.  相似文献

The heat transfer performance of a system can be improved using a combination of passive methods, namely nanofluids and various types of tube geometries. These methods can help enhance the heat transfer coefficient and consequently reduce the weight of the system. In this paper, the effect of tube geometry and nanofluids towards the heat transfer performance in the numerical system is reviewed. The forced convective heat transfer performance, friction factor and wall shear stress are studied for nanofluid flow in different tube geometries. The thermo-physical properties such as density, specific heat, viscosity and thermal conductivity are reviewed for the determination of nanofluid heat transfer numerically. Various researchers had measured and modelled for the determination of thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids. However, the density and specific heat of nanofluids can be estimated with the mixture relations. The different tube geometries in simulation work are analyzed namely circular tube, circular tube with insert, flat tube and horizontal tube. It was observed that the circular tube with insert provides the highest heat transfer coefficient and wall shear stress. Meanwhile, the flat tube has greater heat transfer coefficient with a higher friction factor compared to the circular tube.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics of γ-Al2O3/water and TiO2/water nanofluids were measured in a shell and tube heat exchanger under turbulent flow condition. The effects of Peclet number, volume concentration of suspended nanoparticles, and particle type on the heat characteristics were investigated. Based on the results, adding of naoparticles to the base fluid causes the significant enhancement of heat transfer characteristics. For both nanofluids, two different optimum nanoparticle concentrations exist. Comparison of the heat transfer behavior of two nanofluids indicates that at a certain Peclet number, heat transfer characteristics of TiO2/water nanofluid at its optimum nanoparticle concentration are greater than those of γ-Al2O3/water nanofluid while γ-Al2O3/water nanofluid possesses better heat transfer behavior at higher nanoparticle concentrations.  相似文献

In the present study, experimental and analytical thermal performance of automobile radiator using nanofluids is investigated and compared with performance obtained with conventional coolants. Effect of operating parameters and nanoparticle concentration on heat transfer rate are studied for water as well as CuO/EG‐water based nanofluid analytically. The results are presented in the form of graphs showing variations of net heat transfer rate for various coolant flow rate, air velocity, and source temperature for various CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids. Experimental results indicate that with the increase in coolant flow rate and air velocity, heat transfer rate increases, reaches maximum and then decreases. Experimental investigation of a radiator is carried out using CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids. Results obtained by experimental work and analytical MATLAB code are almost the same. Maximum absolute error in water and air side is within 12% for all flow condition and coolant fluids. Nusselt number of nanofluid is calculated using equation number 33[9]. The results obtained from experimental work using 0.2% volume CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids are compared with the results obtained from MATLAB code. The results show that the maximum error in the outlet temperature of the coolant and air is 12% in each case. Thus MATLAB code can be used for different concentration of nanofluids to study the effect of operating parameters on heat transfer rate. Thus MATLAB code developed is valid for given heat exchanger applications. From the results obtained by already validated MATLAB code, it is concluded that increase in coolant flow rate, air velocity, and source temperature increases the heat transfer rate. Addition of nanoparticles in the base fluid increases the heat transfer rate for all kind of base fluids. Among all the nanofluid analyzed in this study, water‐based nanofluid gives highest value of heat transfer rate and is recommended for the heat exchanger applications under normal operating conditions. Maximum enhancement is observed for ethylene glycol‐water (4:6) mixture for 1% volume concentration of CuO is almost equal to 20%. As heat transfer rate increases with the use of nanofluids, the heat transfer area of the radiator can be minimized.  相似文献

The development of nanotechnology has witnessed an emergence of new generation of heat transfer fluids known as nanofluids. Nanofluids are used as coolants which provide excellent thermal performance in shell and tube heat exchangers. However, the viscosity of these fluids increases with the addition of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the performance of these heat exchangers is influenced by the arrangement of baffles. Thus, in this paper, the study focuses on the heat transfer and entropy analysis of segmental, 25° and 50 helical baffles shell and tube heat exchangers. Heat transfer rate of the 25 helical baffles heat exchanger found to be the highest among the three heat exchangers studied in this research. Study indicates that shell and tube heat exchanger with 50° helical baffles exhibits lowest entropy generation among three different heat exchangers.  相似文献

In this paper an experimental and numerical study to investigate the convective heat transfer characteristics of fully developed turbulent flow of a water–Al2O3 nanofluid in a circular tube is presented. The numerical simulations are accomplished on the experimental test section configuration. In the analysis, the fluid flow and the thermal field are assumed axial-symmetric, two-dimensional, and steady state. The single-phase model is employed to model the nanofluid mixture and the k-? model is used to describe the turbulent fluid flow. Experimental and numerical results are carried out for different volumetric flow rates and nanoparticles concentration values. Heat transfer convective coefficients as a function of flow rates and Reynolds numbers are presented. The results indicate that the heat transfer coefficients increase for all nanofluids concentrations compared to pure water at increasing volumetric flow rate. Heat transfer coefficient increases are observed at assigned volumetric flow rate for nanofluid mixture with higher concentrations, whereas Nusselt numbers present lower values than the ones for pure water.  相似文献

This research presents an experimental and numerical study on the heat transfer of α-Al2O3/water nanofluid flowing through the double pipe and shell and tube heat exchangers, under laminar flow conditions. Effects of important parameters such as hot and cold volume flow rates, nanofluid temperature, and nanoparticles concentration on the heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The results indicated that the heat transfer performance of both double pipe and shell and tube heat exchangers increases with increasing the hot and cold volume flow rates, as well as the particle concentrations and nanofluid inlet temperature. Compared with pure water, the results indicated that the heat transfer coefficients of nanofluid in the double pipe and shell and tube heat exchangers are higher than those of water by 13.2% and 21.3%, respectively. Also, the heat transfer performance of nanofluid in a shell and tube heat exchanger is 26.2% higher than the double pipe heat exchanger. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique was used for heat transfer simulation in the previously mentioned heat exchangers. Computed overall heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluids are in good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献
