Improvement tools in the UK construction industry

The use of improvement tools in manufacturing industry has proven to be an important aspect of continuous improvement activities. To determine whether the same is true in the UK construction industry, a survey was conducted to assess the current level of use and perceived importance of such tools. In addition, the impact of the ISO 9001 quality system on the level of use and perceived importance of these tools was also investigated. Following a comprehensive literature review, more than thirty improvement tools were identified and categorized using affinity diagrams. Factor analysis was used to demonstrate that the proposed classification was valid. The results of the survey showed that, in terms of use, quality control, performance measures and technology tools are common practice in the industry. A similar set of tools/techniques was perceived as highly important except that technology and performance measures were interchanged. When comparing the mean use and mean perceived importance for each group of techniques, significant differences were found in tools that help to gather customer needs, those aimed at programming and those used for measuring performance. In terms of the ISO 9001 standard, it was found that certified companies make more use of and place higher levels of importance on most of the groups of tools studied than those not certified. The conclusions from the survey will help to develop a framework for suggesting which tools to use at each stage of a construction project.     

Management of recruitment in the construction industry

Prompted by allegations of inefficiency, the British construction industry has been subjected to government- and industry-sponsored investigations. Manpower issues—many of which involve a consideration of recruitment and recruitment practices—were reputed to be critically important in contributing to the overall performance of the industry. Some of the issues raised and the solutions offered to the perceived problems are discussed. An outline is given of the approach that sociologists might adopt to such issues and to questions that need to be asked in connection with recruitment. Work currently being conducted by the authors concerning management strategies in relation to recruitment is described.

Organizational behaviour and safety management in the construction industry

This research paper examines the relationship between organizational theory and accident causation/prevention theory as applied in practice to the construction industry. Part of the research work consisted of an information survey of groups of various categories of workers, managers and owners to establish their perceptions of accident causation. The findings indicate that the emphasis of current accident prevention measures in force is more suited to mechanistic organizations than to organic types of which the construction industry is one. The conclusions reached are that the emphasis must be concentrated more on education and training and the spread of information on the hazards of the working environment and their avoidance.

Development of the construction industry in Egypt

Through the position it holds in the nation's economy, the Egyptian construction industry has an important effect on the country's social and economic growth and development. In the past, the industry's problems stemmed from a lack of resources and technological expertise, but more recently it is the management and administration of those problems that have assumed greater prominence. The paper describes briefly the formal construction industry in Egypt and highlights the factors that currently constrain its effective operation. A call is made for better management and greater stability so that both the capacity and the efficiency of the industry can be improved.
