The performance of tertiary lagoons in the United Kingdom: I

Two tertiary lagoons at Holmwood Sewage Treatment Works in the United Kingdom were sampled over a 1 year period. Each lagoon is approximately 39×28 m, receives domestic wastewater only, and serves approximately 2000 people. The aim of the work is to gain a greater understanding of the performance of the lagoon with respect to a number of chemical, biological and physical parameters. Samples were analysed for E. coli, enterococci, total coliforms, BOD, COD, suspended solids, ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, total oxidised nitrogen and soluble phosphate. Occasional samples were also analysed for Cryptosporidium, Giardia and enteroviruses. Cusum charts were used to analyse the cumulative variations that were seen for the parameters being investigated, and had the advantage of emphasising their distinct seasonal trends. Although good percentage removals were seen, there was a lack of consistency in performance for all parameters over the year. No ammonia or phosphorus removal was found, although limited nitrification does appear to occur. None of the bacterial criteria for the WHO guidelines on wastewater reuse or the EC directive on bathing water were reached.

Design by testing: A procedure for the statistical determination of capacity models

Worldwide research has now reached a level of integration where an effort towards the harmonization of procedures is absolutely needed. Such harmonization may regard, for example, the various steps that lead to the definition of capacity models to be included in design codes, specifically: definition of the test setup, quantities to be measured, identification of the basic variables influencing the phenomenon, distinction between average values and other fractiles, disaggregation of the model in different parts accounting for mechanics, fine-tuning and randomnesses, and, finally, assessment of the model against the experimental results. Test results and ensuing model developed according to this procedure would naturally lend themselves to be easily shared among the scientific community and would facilitate the task of calibrating the partial coefficients, with the ambitious aim of attaining a uniform reliability level among all capacity equations.

Mechanical fasteners for cladding sandwich panels:: Interpretative models for shear behaviour

The shear performance of screwed connection systems usually adopted for lightweight sandwich panels is investigated in this paper. First of all, after brief considerations concerning the possibility to use cladding panels as diaphragm in steel building and the corresponding connecting system requirements, the results of available monotonic and cyclic experimental analyses on several connection typologies are summarised. Then mathematical models able to interpret both monotonic and cyclic behaviour of the connections are proposed. In particular, the mathematical cyclic model is based on the previously defined envelope curve, which is expressed by means of a Ramberg-Osgood type law relationship and calibrated trough monotonic tests. Finally, the comparison between experimental and numerical results is carried out, focussing on the actual dissipative capacities of such connection typologies.
