Behavioral activity of the recently identified sex pheromone components of the pea midge, Contarinia pisi, (2S,11S)-diacetoxytridecane, (2S,12S)-diacetoxytridecane, and 2-acetoxytridecane, was tested in wind tunnel and field-trapping experiments. In the wind tunnel, the attractancy of the three-component blend in a 7 : 10 : 0.1 ratio (following the above order, mimicking the ratios found in gland extract) did not differ significantly from female gland extract, whereas a mixture of the two major components (7 : 10) only attracted 2% of the males to the source. In the field, traps baited with the three-component blend caught by far the largest number of males. Traps baited with the two major components only caught slightly more than the blank traps, and catches in traps baited with 2-acetoxytridecane alone did not differ from catches in the blank traps. Traps baited with the racemate of all three components did not catch more than the blank traps, indicating that some of the enantiomers are inhibitory.  相似文献

Male blackberry-cereal aphids, Sitobion fragariae (Walker), were caught in the ield by water traps releasing synthetic (4aS, 7S, 7aR)-nepetalactone, the major sex pheromone component. The presence of the enantiomer (4aR,7R,7aS)-nepetalactone reduced catches and a plant-extracted (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone was less effective than the 99% (7S)-lactone. A more extensive trial with the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, involving the pheromone comprising the stereochemically related (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol showed a similar trend. The (7R)-isomer caught fewer males than the (7S)-isomer, but in this case the addition of high-purity (7S)-lactol to make a 50% blend caught as many males as pure (7S)-lactol. With plant-derived lactol, further purification did not significantly increase the catch. It is suggested that trace compounds associated with reduced enantiomeric purity in terms of the (7S)-configuration or from plant sources reduce activity of the sex pheromone components. Male damson-hop aphids, Phorodon humuli (Schrank), were also caught in the synthetic lactol traps, and it is suggested that this is due to traces of the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols, which comprise the sex pheromone for this species. The significance for aphid chemical ecology studies and pest control strategies is discussed.  相似文献

Studies on the behavioral and oviposition responses of Culex quinquefasciatus to 3-methylindole or skatole (an oviposition site cue) and (5R,6S)-6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide (the synthetic oviposition pheromone, SOP) were conducted in Muheza, northeast Tanzania. Cx. quinquefasciatus displayed a bimodal pattern of oviposition. The highest peak (64.8%) was between 18:00 and 20:00 hr, while the second peak (18.9%) was between 06:00 and 08:00 hr. The mean number of egg rafts oviposited per day between the two peaks was different (P < 0.05). Oviposition responses of gravid Cx. quinquefasciatus differed across the range of concentrations of skatole. Larger numbers of egg rafts were deposited in bowls treated with 10–6 g or 10–5 g skatole than in bowls with tap water (P < 0.05). The number of egg rafts deposited in bowls treated with 10–4 or 10–1 g skatole was not different from that laid in tap water (P > 0.05). Under field conditions skatole was found to be effective for a period of seven days, after which its biological activity decreased significantly. It was further found that more egg rafts of Cx. quinquefasciatus were deposited in water treated with SOP than in water treated with skatole (P = 0.0002). An additive effect was observed when the SOP + skatole combination was used to attract gravid Cx. quinquefasciatus to oviposition sites. It is concluded that skatole and SOP mediate oviposition site selection of Cx. quinquefasciatus under field conditions.  相似文献

The Japanese giant looper, Ascotis selenaria cretacea, is a serious defoliator of tea gardens in Japan. In Mie Prefecture male moths were dose-dependently attracted to rubber septa baited with 0.1–10.0 mg of the sex pheromone component (Z,Z)-6,9-cis-3,4-epoxynonadecadiene. Monitoring by pheromone traps showed three flight periods (June, July, and August–September). A septum with a 1-mg dose was still active after exposure for over three months in the field, but the number of males captured by the old lure was one fifth of that captured by a fresh lure. The parent 3,6,9-triene, a minor pheromonal component, showed a synergistic effect on male attraction when mixed with the pheromonal epoxydiene at a very low ratio, but the 1:1 mixture hardly captured any male moths. Attraction was also effectively inhibited by the positional isomers (6,7- and 9,10-epoxydienes), which exhibited rather strong electrophysiological activities on the male antennae. When these related compounds were placed around a trap baited with the synthetic pheromone, the number of captured moths remarkably decreased, which indicates the possibility of using the compounds as a disruptant.  相似文献

The Noctuidae are one of the most speciose moth families and include the genera Helicoverpa and Heliothis. Females use (Z)-11-hexadecenal as the major component of their sex pheromones except for Helicoverpa assulta and Helicoverpa gelotopoeon, both of which utilize (Z)-9-hexadecenal. The minor compounds found in heliothine sex pheromone glands vary with species, but hexadecanal has been found in the pheromone gland of almost all heliothine females so far investigated. In this study, we found a large amount (0.5–1.5 μg) of hexadecanal and octadecanal on the legs of males of four heliothine species, Helicoverpa zea, Helicoverpa armigera, H. assulta, and Heliothis virescens. The hexadecanal was found on and released from the tarsi, and was in much lower levels or not detected on the remaining parts of the leg (tibia, femur, trochanter, and coxa). Lower amounts (0.05–0.5 μg) of hexadecanal were found on female tarsi. This is the first known sex pheromone compound to be identified from the legs of nocturnal moths. Large amounts of butyrate esters (about 16 μg) also were found on tarsi of males with lower amounts on female tarsi. Males deposited the butyrate esters while walking on a glass surface. Decapitation did not reduce the levels of hexadecanal on the tarsi of H. zea males, indicating that hexadecanal production is not under the same neuroendocrine regulation system as the production of female sex pheromone. Based on electroantennogram studies, female antennae had a relatively high response to hexadecanal compared to male antennae. We consider the possible role of aldehydes and butyrate esters as courtship signals in heliothine moths.  相似文献

Laboratory and field studies were conducted on the oviposition behavior of the pathogen-vectoring mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, in response to the oviposition pheromone 6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide, produced from a renewable plant resource, Kochia scoparia (Chenopodiaceae) (plant-derived pheromone, PDP), and via an established synthetic route (synthetic oviposition pheromone, SOP). Responses to the oviposition cue skatole (3-methylindole), presented individually and in combination with the plant-derived and synthetic oviposition pheromone, were also studied. Both laboratory and field assays showed that PDP and SOP were equally attractive. Synergistic effects were observed with one combination of PDP and skatole combinations in laboratory assays. Synergy was also observed under field conditions. SOP and skatole combinations showed additive effects in laboratory assays, but were not tested in field bioassays. Although synergism has been previously demonstrated with combinations of SOP and polluted waters, the work presented here is the first example of synergy between a specific oviposition attractant and the oviposition pheromone. Furthermore, the efficacy of mosquito pheromone produced from a cheap, renewable botanical source has been demonstrated.  相似文献

Plant volatiles play an important role in the lives of phytophagous insects, by guiding them to oviposition, feeding and mating sites. We tested the effects of different host-plant volatiles on attraction of Lobesia botrana males to the female-produced sex pheromone, in a wind tunnel. Addition of volatile emissions from grapevines or individual plant volatiles to pheromone increased the behavioral responses of L. botrana males over those to pheromone alone. At a low release rate (under-dosed) of pheromone, addition of (E)-β-caryophyllene, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, 1-hexanol, or 1-octen-3-ol increased all behavioral responses, from activation to pheromone source contact, while addition of (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, (E)-β-farnesene, (Z)-3-hexenol, or methyl salicylate affected only the initial behavioral responses. Dose–response experiments suggested an optimal release ratio of 1:1000 (sex pheromone: host plant volatile). Our results highlight the role of plant volatiles in the sensory ecology of L. botrana.  相似文献

The attraction of virgin female medflies to either the natural pheromonal odor of calling males or its synthetic major components was enhanced by both intermediate and minor pheromonal components in multiple choice discrimination tests. The modification of the standard Gow rotating-trap-array, cage olfactometer to allow a single source of natural pheromonal odor to be delivered equally and simultaneously to a number of traps greatly increased trapping efficacy (64% capture rate) and ability to resolve odor preference discrimination by female flies. In olfactometer cage bioassays, responding female medflies expressed preferences in attraction to male odor augmented with either synthetic intermediate or minor components over male odor alone. In dual-choice flight-tunnel bioassays, the minor blend enhanced the attractiveness of both the natural male odor and its synthetic major components. Moreover, the minor blend, when presented together with the synthetic major components, comprised an artificial pheromonal lure competitive for the first time with the natural male odor in attraction of virgin female medflies.  相似文献

The sex pheromone of feral sweet potato weevils Cylas formicarius elegantulus from Cuba was found, via solid-phase microextraction analysis, to be identical to (Z)-3-dodecenyl (E)-2-butenoate, a previously reported compound. Females emitted 20 pg pheromone d−1. In scanning electron microscopy studies carried out on the male antenna, we identified several types of sensilla: sensilla trichoidea of type 1 (ST1) as long hairs (100–150 μm), sensilla trichoidea of type 2 as short hairs (50–60 μm), sensilla basiconica of type 1 as thick pegs (20–25 μm), sensilla basiconica of type 2 as curved pegs (10–15 μm), and sensilla basiconica of type 3 as thin and straight short pegs (15–20 μm). The same types were observed in female antennae but ST1 were far less abundant than in males. Sensilla chaetica were also found on the flagellum subsegments in both sexes. In electrophysiological tests, the crotonate function in the pheromone structure proved to be critical for activity since regular depolarizations (0.6–0.8 mV) were obtained with puffs on 1 μg of the attractant, but not with puffs of the formate, acetate, propionate, or butyrate analogue of the pheromone. In a double dual-choice olfactometer, males showed maximum activity between the 4th and the 8th hr of scotophase at a dose of 50–1000 ng of pheromone. In field tests, a correlation between the contents of the Z,E isomer in the pheromone formulation with activity was noticed, and baits containing this isomer of stereomeric purity >94% showed the highest attractivity. The presence of 5% of the Z,Z isomer in the lure did not induce any synergistic or inhibitory effect, and the alcohol precursor of the pheromone was inactive. The results show that use of a stereomerically pure pheromone may not be necessary in pest control strategies.  相似文献

Gynoparous female and male damson-hop aphids, Phorodon humuli (Schrank), were caught in the field by water traps that were releasing the sex pheromone of this species, (1RS,4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactol. No behavioral activity was elicited by (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone, the major sex pheromone component of other aphid species such as Megoura viciae Buckton, even though olfactory cells were found in the secondary rhinaria on the third antennal segment of P. humuli that responded strongly to this compound. Gynoparous female P. humuli in the field responded less strongly to (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol, the sex pheromone of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), than they did to the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols, but males responded only to the latter. The (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactone showed no electrophysiological activity so was not used in field trials. Releasing either the (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone or the (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol with the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols did not inhibit the response of P. humuli gynoparous females and males to the latter. Males of R. padi responded as strongly to the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols as they did to (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol. Males of P. humuli and R. padi responded positively to an increased concentration of the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols released from two vials compared with that from a single vial, as did P. humuli (in one of two experiments) and R. padi to the (1RS,4aR,7S,7aS)- and (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactols when released together.  相似文献

Earlier work has shown that adult male Prionus californicus Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) are attracted to the female-produced compound (3R,5S)-3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid, and to a synthetic mixture of the four stereoisomers of 3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid. Here, we report the results of field trials that tested whether or not three structurally related compounds (methyl 3,5-dimethyldodecanoate, 3,5-dimethyltridecanoic acid, and 3,5-dimethylpentadecanoic acid), present in extracts of virgin females, are attractive, and whether or not they influence attraction to 3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid. In a trial with single components, only traps baited with the acid or its methyl ester captured more beetles than did control traps; catches to the acid were five times higher than to the methyl ester. Another trial, excluding 3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid, confirmed the activity of the methyl ester. Finally, addition of the three compounds to 3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid, in the ratio found in extracts from female beetles, gave a catch similar to that of traps baited with 3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid alone. Consequently, the function of these minor compounds remains undetermined.  相似文献

The attraction of female and male Bactrocera papayae to conspecific males fed with methyl eugenol (ME) and female attraction to male synthetic sex pheromone, trans-coniferyl alcohol (CF), were evaluated in a wind tunnel. Earlier and greater attraction were exhibited by both females and males to ME-fed than to non-ME-fed males as dusk approaches. Males increased their precopulatory behavior (i.e., wing fanning and mounting) during the period of higher attractancy. These data confirm that the consumption of ME enhances the mating competitiveness of males and suggest that ME also functions as a precursor to the male sex and aggregation pheromones. Three phenylpropanoid compounds biosynthesized from ME, coniferyl alcohol, 2-allyl-4,5-dimethoxyphenol, and 3,4-dimethoxycinnamyl alcohol, were detected in male rectal gland along with an endogenous rectal compound, N-(3-methylbutyl) acetamide. When offered singly to the females, coniferyl alcohol was found to be most attractive.  相似文献

Volatiles collections and cuticular extracts of the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae), were analyzed by coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) in order to detect possible pheromone components of this species. Volatiles collections from male and female sawflies contained the same 13 GC-EAD-active compounds that stimulated both male and female antennae. GC-EAD-active compounds were identified by mass spectrometry, and the identities were verified by acquiring or synthesizing authentic standards with identical GC retention times and mass spectra. 9-Acetyloxynonanal gave the strongest EAD response. Additional GC-EAD-active compounds included 13-acetyloxytridecanal, aldehydes with 9–16 carbon chain lengths, acids with 8–10 carbon chain lengths, and phenylacetic acid. The last was instantly detectable by human nose when several males were allowed to interact, but not from isolated insects. On a per-insect basis, grouped males overall released higher amounts of the GC-EAD-active compounds than grouped females. Notable quantitative differences between the sexes were relatively higher amounts of 9-acetyloxynonanal, phenylacetic acid, and tetradecanal from males and hexadecanal from females. In the absence of an absolute, qualitative difference between sexes, these relative differences might be important for sex recognition. Field bioassay demonstrated the attractiveness of 9-acetyloxynonanal for male and female C. cinctus. The major compounds of male and female cuticular extracts showed no GC-EAD activity, but ozonolysis of extracts gave dramatically increased amounts of GC-EAD-active material. Hence, double-bond-containing cuticular compounds are suggested as precursors of the aldehydic pheromone components.  相似文献

The Asian house gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus, after being acclimatized to feeding on the melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae, consumed fewer numbers of 15-day-old (DO) and older male melon flies compared to sexually immature flies 10 DO and younger. The first male melon fly that performed mating did so on the 10th day after eclosion (DAE), but >80% of the males performed their first mating between 10 and 15 DAE. This confirmed that between 10 and 15 DAE most male melon flies are already sexually mature and producing sex pheromone. Synthetic 1,3-nonanediol, a component of male melon fly sex pheromone produced endogenously, when topically applied onto the thorax of housefly Musca domestica at ca. 80 or 320 ng/fly, reduced consumption by geckos compared with untreated flies in subsequent days after the first day in a four-day feeding test. Raspberry ketone (RK) is consumed and sequestered into the pheromonal gland and later released as a pheromonal component of male melon fly. Houseflies topically treated with 2.6 g RK/fly did not deter predation by geckos. However, houseflies treated with 5.1 g RK/fly caused geckos to consume fewer flies, especially on the third and fourth days during a four-day feeding test, compared with the period when they were offered untreated flies.  相似文献

Chemical communication is a dominant method of communication throughout the animal kingdom and can be especially important in group-living animals in which communicating threats, either from predation or other dangers, can have large impacts on group survival. Social insects, in particular, have evolved a number of pheromonal compounds specifically to signal alarm. There is predicted to be little selection for interspecific variation in alarm cues because individuals may benefit from recognizing interspecific as well as conspecific cues and, consequently, alarm cues are not normally thought to be used for species or nestmate recognition. Here, we examine the composition of the alarm pheromones of seven species of fungus-growing ants (Attini), including both basal and derived species and examine the behavioral responses to alarm pheromone of Acromyrmex leaf-cutting ants, the sister genus to the highly studied Atta leaf-cutting ants. We find surprisingly high interspecific variation in alarm pheromone composition across the attine phylogeny. Interestingly, the active component of the alarm pheromone was different between the two leaf-cutting ant genera. Furthermore, in contrast to previous studies on Atta, we found no differences among morphological castes in their responses to alarm pheromone in Acromyrmex but we did find differences in responses among putative age classes. The results suggest that the evolution of alarm communication and signaling within social insect clades can be unexpectedly complex and that further work is warranted to understand whether the evolution of different alarm pheromone compounds is adaptive.  相似文献

The previously identified, male-specific compound of the cereal leaf beetle (CLB, Chrysomelidae; Oulema melanopus), (E)-8-hydroxy-6-methyl-6-octen-3-one, was studied further with respect to field activity and emission rate from male beetles. In a 5-week field experiment in Oregon, the compound was shown to function as an aggregation pheromone in attracting male and female CLBs migrating from overwintering sites in spring. Traps baited with the synthetic compound (500 g per rubber septum) caught 3.3 times more CLBs than control traps. Lower doses of the pheromone (50 and 150 g) were less attractive than the 500 g dose. One relatively abundant, volatile compound from the host plant (oats), (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, that elicited responses from beetle antennae was not attractive, either by itself or as a synergist of the pheromone. Both sexes were captured about equally for all treatments. We also measured daily pheromone emission by male beetles in the laboratory. Individual males feeding on oat seedlings under greenhouse conditions emitted as much as 6 g per day, which is about 500 times higher than had been previously observed under incubator conditions. The pheromone emission rate was at least five times higher during the day than at night, and in one male, emission spanned a period of 28 d. The release rate of synthetic pheromone from the 500 g septa was very similar to the maximum from single males; thus, future experiments should evaluate even higher doses. The field results indicate that the pheromone has potential as a monitoring tool for early detection of CLBs as they move from their overwintering sites into newly planted cereal crops in spring.  相似文献

The effect of brief pheromone exposures on responses of codling moth (Cydia pomonella L.) males was tested by flight-tunnel and electroantennogram (EAG) studies. Males were preexposed to pheromone for up to 3 min as they sat in release cages or for shorter times (a few seconds to several min) upon initiating flights or orienting in plumes. Brief exposures to Isomate-C Plus dispensers nearly eliminated moth orientations to 0.1 mg codlemone [(E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol] and 0.1 mg three-component (codlemone/12OH/14OH, 100:20:5 ratio) lures 15 min later. However, there was no associated change in EAG responses between preexposed and control moths. Behavioral responses of Isomate-C Plus-exposed males were normal 24 hr following exposure. The reduced sexual responsiveness observed following exposure to Isomate dispensers appeared to be associated with an elevation of response threshold. Brief preexposure to 0.1 mg codlemone and three-component lures also reduced orientational behavior of males 15 min later, but to a lesser degree than when preexposed to Isomate-C Plus dispensers. Male behavior following preexposure to a 0.1 mg codlemone/pear ester [(2E,4Z)-2,4-decadienoate] lure (1:1 ratio) was no different from exposure to codlemone only. Orientational disruption in plots treated with 10 dispensers of Isomate-C Plus per tree was 88.3 and 95.9% for 1.0 and 0.1 mg codlemone lures, respectively. Some males did orient to 0.1 mg codlemone lures so we caution that flight-tunnel experiments on preexposure may overestimate the actual pheromone exposure dosage received by feral moths in treated orchards. Importantly, this work documents that a portion of feral males within a population has the capacity to overcome communicational disruption by high densities of Isomate-C Plus dispensers.  相似文献

The sex pheromone of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, is shown by GC and GC-MS analysis of pheromone entrained from sexual females, and by electrophysiological studies on single cell preparations from male antennae, to comprise (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone. The compound proved to be attractive in a laboratory bioassay and release of the pheromone from glass vials placed above water traps in crops of autumn brassicaceous crops increased the catch of males of this species. The specialist parasitoid of B. brassicae, Diaeretiella rapae, and the more general aphid parasitoid Praon volucre were found in significantly larger numbers in pheromone traps as compared to the controls, under certain conditions.  相似文献

The sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, is a harmful invader of the Laurentian Great Lakes. The odor emitted by larval lampreys resident to streams attracts migrating adults to high quality spawning habitats. Three components of the larval pheromone have been identified and tested in laboratory settings: petromyzonol sulfate, petromyzosterol disulfate, and petromyzonamine disulfate. Here, we report the first field test of six mixtures of synthetic versions of these pheromone components, and we compare lamprey responses to these with those elicited by the complete larval odor in a natural stream. Exposure to larval odor both increased upstream movement and attracted migrants into the portion of a channel containing the odor. No tested combination of synthetic pheromone components proved similarly attractive. These findings suggest the existence of unknown additional components of the pheromone that await discovery and are likely necessary if the pheromone is to be useful in management of this pest. Further, we hypothesize that the complete pheromone mixture is necessary to attract migrants into spawning habitat at the conclusion of the migration, whereas a partial pheromone may be effective at the transition from lake to stream when natural factors both dilute and alter the ratio of components from that actually emitted by sea lamprey larvae.  相似文献

Five active compounds were detected during analyses of ovipositor washings and effluvia from virgin female Coniesta ignefusalis moths by gas chromatography (GC) linked to electroantennographic (EAG) recording from a male moth. These were identified as (Z)-7-dodecen-1-ol (Z7–12:OH), (Z)-5-decen-1-ol (Z5–10:OH), (Z)-7-dodecenal (Z7–12:Ald), (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7–12:Ac), and (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol (Z9–14:OH) by comparison of their GC retention times, mass spectra, and EAG activities with those of synthetic standards. Laboratory tests of dispensers for these compounds showed that release rates from polyethylene vials increased to relatively uniform values after three to four days, but release from septa was very rapid and nonuniform and decreased to low levels after two to three days. Trapping tests in Niger showed that the major component, Z7–12:OH, and two of the minor components, Z5–10:OH and Z7–12:Ald, were essential for attraction of male C. ignefusalis moths. The most attractive blend contained these three components in a 100:5:3.3 ratio in a polyethylene vial, which emitted the components in similar proportions to those produced by the female C. ignefusalis moth. Water traps baited with this blend containing 1 mg of Z7–12:OH caught more male C. ignefusalis moths than traps baited with newly emerged female moths. Addition of up to 10% of the corresponding E isomers of the pheromone components had no effect on catches, but addition of the other two minor components detected, Z7–12:Ac and/or Z9–14:OH, to the attractive blend at naturally occurring levels caused significant reductions in trap catch.  相似文献
