Many urban concrete pavements in California need to be reconstructed, as they have exceeded their design lives and require frequent maintenance and repair. Information is needed to determine which methodologies for pavement design, materials selection, traffic management, and reconstruction strategies are most suitable to achieve the objectives of California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans) long-life pavement rehabilitation strategies (LLPRS) program. To develop construction productivity information for several construction windows, a case study was performed on a Caltrans concrete rehabilitation demonstration project near Los Angeles on Interstate-10, where 20 lane-km was successfully rebuilt using fast setting hydraulic cement concrete (FSHCC) with one weekend closure for 2.8 lane-km and repeated 7- and 10-h nighttime closures for the remaining distance. The concrete delivery and discharge controlled the overall progress. In terms of the number of slabs replaced per hour, the 55-h weekend closure was 54% faster than the average nighttime closure. An excellent traffic management strategy helped to reduce the volume of traffic during the weekend closure and minimize the traffic delay through the construction zone.  相似文献

The California Department of Transportation is rehabilitating or reconstructing deteriorated urban freeways using long-life (30+ years) strategies. These pavements were constructed between 1955 and 1970 with design lives of 20 years. This paper summarizes preconstruction analysis of the fast-track pavement reconstruction on Interstate-15 (I-15) at Devore which used two one-roadbed continuous (about 210 h) closures with round-the-clock (24/7) operations. The integrated analysis concluded that the one-roadbed continuous closures are the most economical scenario when compared to traditional nighttime or weekend closures from the perspective of schedule, delay, and costs. The preconstruction was validated with as-built construction and traffic performances monitored during construction. The construction management plan—including contingency, incentives, and critical path method schedule—was developed utilizing the Construction Analysis for Pavement Rehabilitation Strategies (CA4PRS) computer model. The results of this planning study are useful for transportation agencies in developing highway rehabilitation strategies that balance the maximization of construction productivity with a minimization of traffic delay.  相似文献

Over the last 5?years the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has completed three experimental long-life urban freeway rehabilitation projects by utilizing a fast-track (accelerated) construction approach of around-the-clock operations under extended closure. This paper presents the fast-track rehabilitation approaches and the as-built production rates of major rehabilitation operations monitored at the three experimental projects. The monitoring results show that the contractor’s production rates varied considerably depending upon the construction logistics, material delivery and hauling methods, lane-closure tactics, and/or pavement designs being implemented. A higher production rate and a noticeable “learning-curve effect” were observed when full-width rehabilitation was compared with partial-width rehabilitation, when continuous lane reconstruction was compared with random slab replacements, and when full roadbed closures were compared with partial lane closures. Findings in this study suggest that Caltrans should evaluate project-specific conditions and constraints, which might restrict use of a preferred rehabilitation scheme, by taking production rate variances into account when establishing schedule baselines of construction staging plans and incentive/disincentive contracts for urban freeway rehabilitation projects.  相似文献

This case study paper presents an innovative fast-track approach applied to a heavily trafficked urban freeway reconstruction project in Southern California. Badly deteriorated truck lanes in both directions along a 4.5-km stretch of I-15 were rebuilt from the gravel base up. The operations, estimated to take 10?months using traditional nighttime closures, were completed in two 9-day continuous closures with round-the-clock (about 210?h for each direction) operations. This “Rapid Rehab” project adopted state-of-practice technologies to accelerate construction, mitigate traffic disruptions, and propagate project information. As a result, traffic demand through the construction work zone was reduced by 20% and the maximum peak-hour delay was reduced by 50%. The estimated benefits of accelerated reconstruction on this project included a 28% reduction in agency cost and 29% time value savings to road users, compared to the traditional approach of using repeated nighttime closures. Web surveys showed dramatic changes in public perception of the Rapid Rehab approach from initial reluctance and objection to positive support.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of lacunar infarction is closely related to arterial hypertension. However, there is only limited and partly controversial knowledge regarding the possible pathogenetic role of circadian blood pressure changes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between circadian blood pressure rhythm, occurrence, and extent of lacunar infarction. METHODS: We analyzed circadian blood pressure patterns, other cardiovascular risk factors, and occurrence of lacunar infarction in 118 hospitalized patients older than 55 years. Noninvasive 24-hour blood pressure measurements and magnetic resonance or computed tomographic brain imaging were performed in 61 patients with lacunar infarction and in 57 control patients. Daytime blood pressure variability was defined as the within-subject SD of all systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings during the daytime measurement period. Circadian blood pressure variation was defined as the average percentage change of nighttime blood pressure values compared with the daytime blood pressure values. RESULTS: Patients with lacunar infarction were significantly older and showed more often a history of arterial hypertension, elevated average daytime blood pressure values, an increased systolic daytime blood pressure variability, and a reduced circadian blood pressure variation due to an increased incidence of a pathologic nighttime blood pressure increase. No significant correlation was found between these parameters and the number of lacunae. A logistic regression analysis revealed that a reduced systolic circadian blood pressure variation, age, systolic average daytime blood pressure, and a history of arterial hypertension were best correlated with the occurrence of lacunar infarction. CONCLUSION: Reduced nighttime decline in systolic blood pressure may be an important risk factor for the development of lacunar infarction in addition to the absolute level of blood pressure and age.  相似文献

The nuclear density gauge served the industry well for almost forty years as project owners performed quality control on the asphalt paving and compaction process. Recently, however, the responsibility for quality control of these processes has largely been given to the contractor. This shift in responsibility comes at a particularly unfavorable time for the average paving contractor. The construction industry is faced with the worst labor shortage in history, limiting the number of qualified quality control technicians and equipment operators. In addition, this is the dawn of the age of Superpave, a family of hot-mix asphalt mixes designed to combat pavement rutting by increasing the quantity of large aggregate in the mixes. Understandably, these are more difficult to compact. The Onboard Density Measuring System, a model patented by Penn State University, offers density measurements in real time at a rate of one per second during the compaction process, thereby affording the constructor the opportunity to recognize and correct compaction problems immediately while maintaining a permanent record of the entire compaction process.  相似文献

While some projects will experience changes to the contracted cost by deduction or additions, construction cost overruns are becoming a common problem in the construction industry. Steps need to be taken to minimize cost overrun through cost and quality control techniques. This paper presents a study conducted to evaluate construction cost overruns of asphalt paving operations performed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The main objective is to analyze the main causes of cost overruns and evaluate the amount of cost overrun of asphalt paving operations, using statistical process control (SPC) techniques. Real data from projects in the year 2000 were collected from IDOT. These data contain cost information of 219 projects. The results indicate that the average cost overrun for the sample collected was 4% above the bid price. Reasons for cost overruns are analyzed and a Pareto chart and a cause and effect diagram are constructed. Individuals and Moving Range (MR) control charts are developed and their interpretation and use are discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and limitations of using the individuals and MR chart in cost control applications are pointed out. It is recommended that SPC analysis be an integral part in managing and controlling project costs.  相似文献

This paper presents a decision support tool that is intended to help highway agencies in evaluating the suitability of nighttime construction for highway projects. This tool was developed as part of a research project sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The tool is a simple software package that was developed using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and Visual Basic for Applications. The proposed tool utilizes the cost-effectiveness analysis as a basis for comparison between daytime and nighttime operations. The proposed tool is mainly used whenever night shift is thought of as an alternative to the conventional daytime shift. Nonetheless, the tool is also generic in the sense that it can be used to compare different alternative plans such as different lane closure strategies or scheduling alternatives.  相似文献

Sleep and waking behaviors change significantly during the adolescent years. The objective of this study was to describe the relation between adolescents' sleep/wake habits, characteristics of students (age, sex, school), and daytime functioning (mood, school performance, and behavior). A Sleep Habits Survey was administered in homeroom classes to 3,120 high school students at 4 public high schools from 3 Rhode Island school districts. Self-reported total sleep times (school and weekend nights) decreased by 40-50 min across ages 13-19, ps < .001. The sleep loss was due to increasingly later bedtimes, whereas rise times were more consistent across ages. Students who described themselves as struggling or failing school (C's, D's/F's) reported that on school nights they obtain about 25 min less sleep and go to bed an average of 40 min later than A and B students, ps < .001. In addition, students with worse grades reported greater weekend delays of sleep schedule than did those with better grades. Furthermore, this study examined a priori defined adequate sleep habit groups versus less than adequate sleep habit groups on their daytime functioning. Students in the short school-night total sleep group (< 6 hr 45 min) and/or large weekend bedtime delay group (> 120 min) reported increased daytime sleepiness, depressive mood, and sleep/wake behavior problems, ps < .05, versus those sleeping longer than 8 hr 15 min with less than 60 min weekend delay. Altogether, most of the adolescents surveyed do not get enough sleep, and their sleep loss interferes with daytime functioning.  相似文献

Construction specifications are used by transportation agencies to define the client’s requirements of the final product. The primary motivation of adopting the newer end result specification (ERS) or performance related specification over method-based specification (MBS) is to reduce clients’ costs, encourage contractors’ innovation, and improve overall quality. However, some transportation agencies have been reluctant to fully implement ERS due to lack of demonstrated evidence on whether they achieve comparable level of quality or performance. This paper investigates if the specification type has any effect on quality. The case study presented is based on data from New Brunswick Department of Transportation (NBDOT) from years 2003–2007. NBDOT generally uses ERSs to call paving contracts equal to or larger than 8,000 t. MBSs are used for all other smaller paving contracts. The most prevalent indicator variables for accepting asphalt paving jobs in North America [that is, percent theoretical maximum relative density, asphalt binder content, air voids, voids in mineral aggregates, percent passing 4.75 mm (No. 4), and 75?μm (No. 200) sieves] were investigated. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the deviation of the quality indicator variables from their respective job mix formula values for paving projects that used MBS or ERS. ANOVA results revealed that there were no significant differences between the qualities achieved from the two specification types. Also, no significant differences were found from within-specification comparisons over the time frame examined. Given the possible cost advantages from agency’s point of view, the flexibility of the contractors to innovate and the fact that this study demonstrates quality is not compromised, there is an opportunity for agencies to expand or fully adopt the use of ERS specifications.  相似文献

The cost of quality assurance programs in asphalt road construction is high in part because of the need for daily testing. This paper demonstrates the methodology used to investigate the timing of sampling and its effect on the quality assurance program. Fourteen lots over two highway paving projects were tested twice: during construction on a daily basis, and after construction was complete. Three quality measures were compared, namely asphalt content, degree of compaction, and aggregate gradation. The test data during construction were obtained from two sources: the consultant’s quality assurance, and the contractor’s quality control. One-way ANOVA tests and T-tests were used to compare the means. In addition, the arithmetic difference between the means was reviewed to understand how the time of sampling might affect contractor payment adjustments.  相似文献

PURPOSE: We investigate the underlying pathophysiological cause of primary nocturnal enuresis by comparing electrolyte alterations in urine samples of enuretics during the daytime and nighttime compared with those of nonenuretic subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Urine output, urine specific gravity and urinary electrolytes in 15 enuretic and 12 nonenuretic children were measured. We collected daytime serum and urine samples of children fed a similar diet between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and nighttime between samples 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Urinary calcium/creatinine ratio, tubular reabsorption of phosphorus and excretions of fractional sodium and potassium were calculated. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the calcium/creatinine ratio ratios. There was a significant increase in fractional sodium and fractional potassium values in enuretics compared to nonenuretics during the day and at night. Daytime and nighttime fractional sodium and fractional potassium values in enuretics were similar. In contrast to nonenuretics, enuretic patients had no diurnal variation of fractional sodium. There was significant positive correlation between bedwetting status, and fractional sodium and fractional potassium. CONCLUSIONS: Since sodium and potassium excretions were higher in enuretic patients than nonenuretic children, and no significant diurnal variation in urinary excretion of these ions there might be a difference in the mechanism of reabsorption of sodium and potassium between enuretic and nonenuretic children.  相似文献

The release of serotonin (5-HT) in the striatum and the motor activity of rats given the immobilization stress were measured using in vivo microdialysis techniques and locomotion counts. Serotonin release in the striatum did not change in the daytime and nighttime, but motor activity in the nighttime was significantly higher than in the daytime. Serotonin release was not significantly increased during immobilization stress in the daytime or nighttime. In the nighttime, however, after the end of stress, 5-HT release was significantly increased from 0.002 ng/dialysate to 0.47 ng/dialysate. The motor activities were also significantly increased after the stress in the nighttime. These results suggest that the effects of immobilization stress on serotonin release in the striatum were different in the daytime and nighttime. In the nighttime, serotonin release in the striatum and the motor activities increased not during but after immobilization stress.  相似文献

Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability was performed to assess cardiac autonomic function using Holter monitoring in 19 hospitalized patients with symptomatic NYHA class II-III hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (sHCM), 20 ambulatory patients with asymptomatic NYHA class I hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (asHCM) and 20 normal control subjects. Power spectral analysis decomposed the heart rate variability into high-frequency power (HF: 0.15-0.40 Hz) and low-frequency power (LF: 0.04-0.15 Hz). HF was corrected by mean RR intervals (CCVHF). CCVHF values and LF/HF ratios were used as indices of vagal and sympathetic modulations, respectively. The sHCM group demonstrated no significant elevation in CCVHF during the nighttime as compared to the daytime, while asHCM and control groups showed significant CCVHF elevation during the nighttime (p < 0.05-0.01). The nighttime CCVHF, therefore, was significantly lower in the sHCM group than in the control or asHCM group (sHCM, 1.08 +/- 0.36%; control, 1.60 +/- 0.57%; asHCM 1.82 +/- 0.77%; sHCM vs. control or sHCM vs. asHCM, p < 0.01). All of these three groups showed significant reduction in LF/HF ratio during the nighttime as compared to the daytime (p < 0.01). However, the reduction in the sHCM group was not as great as that in the control group and there was a significant difference between the sHCM and control group (2.01 +/- 1.58 vs. 1.08 +/- 0.65, p < 0.05). Two patients in the sHCM group, who later died suddenly, demonstrated very low CCVHF throughout a 24-hour period (0.2-0.8%). Both vagal and sympathetic impairment with a predominance of vagal abnormalities is suggested in patients with symptomatic NYHA class II or III hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The optimal material for carotid patch angioplasty after endarterectomy remains uncertain. This study compares the early outcome and recurrent stenosis rates between saphenous vein (SV) and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) carotid patch angioplasty. METHODS: The results of 421 consecutive carotid endarterectomies performed over a 72-month period were reviewed. Postoperative complications and restenosis rates, defined as > OR = 60% narrowing measured by color flow duplex, were compared. RESULTS: Patch angioplasty was performed with SV in 287 and with ePTFE in 110 cases. Patients who had undergone primary closure (n = 20) or whose form of closure was unknown (n = 4) were excluded. The mean age of patients and length of follow-up was similar between groups. Women were more likely to be patched with ePTFE than were men (36% versus 23%, P = 0.02). One death occurred in each group (0.3% SV, 0.9% ePTFE, P = 0.47), and four strokes occurred in each group (1.4% SV, 3.6% ePTFE, P = 0.22). Cervical hematomas requiring operative evacuation occurred in five SV closures and in three ePTFE closures (1.7% versus 2.7%, P = 0.69). Vein harvest site complications occurred in 6 patients (2%) who had undergone SV patch angioplasty. Recurrent stenosis occurred in 3 patients with SV closure and in 3 patients with ePTFE closure (1.0% versus 2.7%, P = 0.35). The 60-month restenosis rates by life table analysis were 2.6% +/- 2.1% for SV and 10.7% +/- 7.9% for ePTFE (P = 0.17). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of postoperative complications is similar with SV or ePTFE patch angioplasty; however, vein harvest site complications are avoided with the use of ePTFE. Recurrent stenosis at 5 years occurs infrequently with either SV or ePTFE.  相似文献

An increasing volume of highway repair and construction work is being performed during the off-peak nighttime hours to mitigate the impact of construction-related daytime traffic congestions and shorten the duration of construction operations. The utilization and placement of light towers to illuminate the work zone in this type of construction can cause harmful levels of glare for both drivers and construction workers. This paper presents the results of field experiments which were conducted to (1) study the levels of glare and lighting performance generated by light towers in and around nighttime work zones; (2) analyze the combined impact of the light tower set up parameters including its height as well as its aiming and rotation angles on glare and lighting performance; and (3) provide practical recommendations to reduce and control lighting glare in and around nighttime work zones. The results of these experiments confirm that the set up of light towers has a significant impact on glare and therefore it should be carefully designed and executed on nighttime highway construction projects to ensure the safety of the traveling public as well as construction workers.  相似文献

Because sigma receptors are richly concentrated in the rat pineal gland, the present study was performed to investigate their possible role in the modulation of melatonin production. To this purpose, we assessed in vivo the effects of the sigma-receptor ligands 1,3-di(2-tolyl)guanidine and (+)-N-allylnormetazocine on the rat pineal gland activity during either the daytime or the nighttime. Compared with vehicle, 1,3-di(2-tolyl)guanidine and (+)-N-allylnormetazocine potentiated the enhancement of N-acetyltransferase activity and pineal melatonin content induced by isoproterenol administration during the daytime, whereas they did not affect the diurnal basal biosynthetic activity of the gland. Conversely, at night, 1,3-di(2-tolyl)guanidine and (+)-N-allylnormetazocine enhanced significantly the physiological increases in both pineal N-acetyltransferase activity and melatonin levels. This enhancement was prevented by pretreatment with rimcazole, a specific sigma-receptor antagonist. These findings suggest that, in rats, the activation of pineal sigma-receptor sites does not affect the biosynthetic activity of the pineal gland during daytime, whereas it potentiates the production of melatonin when the gland is noradrenergically stimulated either by isoproterenol administration or by the endogenously released norepinephrine at nighttime.  相似文献

This paper details a mathematical algorithm to determine the required number of rollers for a chip seal project’s equipment spread based on maximizing the asphalt distributor’s production and adhering to specified roller time requirements. The paper reports one of the findings of a three-year constructability review of the Texas Department of Transportation’s statewide seal coat program. One of the findings of that study was that there was a correlation between the number of rollers used on a job and the loss of aggregate after construction was completed. The roller is the tool used to seat the aggregate and create embedment in the asphaltic binder. Thus, the failure to achieve design embedment depth is primarily a function of achieving quality control requirements for roller linger time. The paper illustrates a straightforward method to calculate the required number rollers to achieve both maximum productivity for the chip seal paving train and to ensure a uniform distribution of roller coverage across the width of the shot. The paper concludes that designing the roller spread is in the best interests of both the chip seal contractor and the owner.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of menopause on circadian profile of blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) in the normotensive pre- and postmenopausal women. Systolic BP (SBP), diagnostic BP (DBP) and HR were monitored every 30 min for 48 hrs using noninvasive ambulatory BP monitoring in 24 premenopausal and 40 postmenopausal women. Mean 48-hours, daytime (awake), and nighttime (sleeping) SBP, DBP and HR values were analyzed by reviewing the patients' diaries, and the nocturnal reduction rate (NRR) of SBP, DBP and HR were calculated according to the following formula. NRR (%9 = [(daytime mean-nighttime mean)/daytime mean] x 100. The study subjects were then divided into two groups according to the presence (dipper) or absence (nondipper) of a significant reduction in nocturnal BP (> 10%). Mean SBP, DBP and HR measured over 48 hours were similar between the premenopausal and the postmenopausal group. The NRR of DBP and HR in the postmenopausal group were significantly smaller than those in the premenopausal group (17.1 +/- 6.0% vs. 13.5 +/- 7.0%, 241.1 +/- 6.0% vs. 19.8 +/- 9.0%: p < 0.05). There tended to be higher prevalence of nondipper in the postmenopausal (37%) than in the premenopausal group (29%).  相似文献

We examined the association between sleep behavior and cognitive functioning in 60 healthy children between 7 and 11 years of age under nonexperimental conditions. Intellectual abilities were assessed by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (4th edition) and sleep variables by questionnaires, actigraphy, and sleep diaries. Correlation analysis revealed a negative association between sleep duration on weekends and measures of intelligence (full-scale IQ, r = ?.29; fluid IQ, r = ?.36). The regression coefficient for sleep duration on weekends was ?6.11 (SE = 2.09), indicating an increase of 6.11 points on fluid IQ scores for each hour of shorter sleep duration. Attention measures did not correlate with cognitive or sleep variables. Daytime sleepiness as a potential moderator of the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive performance was not related to cognitive or sleep variables. We conclude that children with higher daytime cognitive efficiency (reflected by higher intelligence scores) show increased nighttime efficiency (reflected by shorter sleep duration). In the light of the neural efficiency hypothesis, the current results argue for an extension of the original theory—referring not only to daytime but also to nighttime behavior.
