Using a variation on the standard procedure of conditioned inhibition (Trials A+ and AX?), rats (Rattus norvegicus) in a circular pool were trained to find a hidden platform that was located in a specific spatial position in relation to 2 individual landmarks (Trials A → platform and B → platform; Experiments 1a and 1b) and to 2 configurations of landmarks (Trials ABC → platform and FGH → platform; Experiment 2a). The rats also underwent inhibitory trials (Experiment 1: Trials AZ → no platform; Experiment 2a: Trials CDE → no platform) interspersed with these excitatory trials. In both experiments, subsequent test trials without the platform showed both a summation effect and retardation of excitatory conditioning, and in Experiment 2a rats learned to avoid the CDE quadrant over the course of the experiment. Two further experiments established that these results could not be attributed to any difference in salience between the conditioned inhibitors and the control stimuli. All these results contribute to the growing body of evidence consistent with the idea that there is a general mechanism of learning that is associative in nature. Three appetitive conditioning experiments with rats found partial learning of complex XA+ , XB+ , XAB- (+ stands for reinforced; - stands for unreinforced) negative patterning discriminations with intermixed A+ and B+ trials (Experiment 1). AB+ trials (Experiment 2), and A+ , B+ , and AB+ trials (Experiment 3). In all experiments, differential responding emerged more slowly during the learning of the negative patterning discriminations than during learning of the XA+ , XB+ , XC- control discriminations. Additionally, the negative patterning groups responded more to X than to a separately reinforced Y on unreinforced test trials: thus, X derived superexcitatory properties. This pattern was reversed in the control groups. Results are consistent with theories that allow for different activation patterns when elements are combined. In Experiment 1 rats had to escape from a kite-shaped pool by swimming to a submerged escape platform in a right-angled corner. The two walls creating this corner were white and the two walls creating the opposite, incorrect, right-angled corner were black. The rats were then trained in a square pool with two white walls forming one corner and two black walls forming the opposite corner. The platform was in the white corner for a consistent group and the black corner for an inconsistent group. A test in an entirely white kite revealed a stronger preference for the correct than the incorrect corner in the consistent but not the inconsistent group. This outcome is attributed to the formation of associations between geometric cues, provided by the shape of the pool, and the color of the walls. The results were replicated in a second experiment in which the walls of the test pool were the same color as the incorrect corner during initial training. In 3 experiments rats had to find a submerged platform that was located in a corner of a kite-shaped pool. The color of the walls creating this corner provided an additional cue for finding the platform in the shape + color condition but not the shape-only condition. During tests in a pool with walls of a uniform color but no platform, more time was spent in the corner where the platform was originally located after training in the shape + color than in the shape-only condition. The results challenge theories that assume either that learning about the shape of the environment takes place in a dedicated module or that cues compete for the control they acquire over behavior. In two conditioned suppression experiments with rats as subjects, the authors examined two classes of accounts of spontaneous recovery of excitation and inhibition. One view suggests that spontaneous recovery occurs due to greater temporal instability of inhibitory associations, whereas the other posits that spontaneous recovery occurs due to greater temporal instability of second-learned associations. These accounts diverge in predictions concerning spontaneous recovery when the first-learned association is inhibitory and the second-learned association is excitatory. Using different designs, Experiments 1 and 2 found spontaneous recovery of both excitation and inhibition. The results support the view that spontaneous recovery occurs due to faster waning of second-learned associations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Despite its potential relevance to the treatment of drug abuse, conditioned inhibition of drug seeking has not been systematically investigated before. In this study, rats could self-administer cocaine by lever pressing whenever a click or tone was present. Responding was not reinforced when a light was present. The light was presented simultaneously with the click (i.e., in an excitatory context) in 1 group, but the light was always presented alone in another group. When it was later presented in compound with the tone, the light was a highly effective conditioned inhibitor, suppressing cocaine seeking by 92% in the former group and by 74% in the latter. These results suggest ways to improve cue-oriented behavioral treatments for drug abuse. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In 5 experiments rats were required to escape from a triangular shaped pool by swimming to a submerged platform. The principal group of interest in each experiment received training with a beacon attached to the platform. The purpose of the experiments was to assess if the beacon overshadowed (Experiments 1–4) or blocked (Experiment 5) learning about the position of the platform with reference to the shape of the pool. The platform was located in the center of the pool for the first 2 experiments and in a corner for the remaining experiments. Although there was an overshadowing effect in Experiment 1, the remaining experiments failed to reveal any disruptive influence of the beacon on learning based on the shape of the pool. Moreover, in Experiments 3–5 there was an indication that the beacon facilitated such learning. The results suggest that spatial learning based on the shape of a test environment may not take place in the same way as that based on more discrete landmarks. Two conditioned suppression experiments with rats investigated the influence on latent inhibition of compounding a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor with the target cue during preexposure treatment. Results were compared with those of subjects that received conventional latent inhibition training, no preexposure, or preexposure to the target cue in compound with a neutral stimulus. In Experiment 1, greater attenuation of the latent inhibition effect was observed in subjects that received target preexposure in compound with a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor relative to subjects that received preexposure with a neutral stimulus or to the target alone. In Experiment 2, this protection from latent inhibition was attenuated if the excitor that was used to train the conditioned inhibitor was extinguished between preexposure and target training. The results are consistent with an account offered by the extended comparator hypothesis. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The present research addresses whether rats can express odor aversions to the odor of taste stimuli. In Experiment 1, saccharin or salt were either mixed in distilled water, so the rats could taste and smell them, or presented on disks attached to the tubes' metal spouts so the rats could only smell them. Aversions were established to taste stimuli under both conditions. The results of Experiment 2 indicate that conditioning was to the odor of the tastes when they were presented on disks in Experiment 1, hence both taste and odor aversions were established by means of "taste" stimuli. Taste aversion learning thus may more properly be termed flavor aversion learning, with flavor referring to both taste and odor components. An influential view in the field of spatial cognition is that an obligatory geometric module constrains spatial learning and memory. In this issue, P. M. Jones, J. M. Pearce, V. J. Davies, M. A. Good, and A. McGregor (2007; see record 2007-18058-012) showed that learning based on the geometry, or shape, of the environment requires the hippocampus. To place this work in context, the author of the present article considers the evidence for and against a geometric module for rat spatial learning, outlines the influence of geometry on neurons that encode spatial information, and attempts to relate spatial behavior to neuronal representations of direction and location. In a recent article, the authors (Miller & Shettleworth, 2007; see record 2007-09968-001) showed how the apparently exceptional features of behavior in geometry learning ("reorientation") experiments can be modeled by assuming that geometric and other features at given locations in an arena are learned competitively as in the Rescorla-Wagner model and that the probability of visiting a location is proportional to the total associative strength of cues at that location relative to that of all relevant locations. Reinforced or unreinforced visits to locations drive changes in associative strengths. Dawson, Kelly, Spetch, and Dupuis (2008; see record 2008-09669-009) have correctly pointed out that at parameter values outside the ranges the authors used to simulate a body of real experiments, our equation for choice probabilities can give impossible and/or wildly fluctuating results. Here, the authors show that a simple modification of the choice rule eliminates this problem while retaining the transparent way in which the model relates spatial choice to competitive associative learning of cue values. Rats were given intermixed preexposure to the compound flavors AX and BX and to the compound CX in a separate block of trials (4 presentations of each compound). In Experiment 1, rats showed less generalization of conditioned aversion from AX to BX than from CX to BX, a perceptual learning effect. Experiment 2 showed that the formation of an excitatory association proceeded more readily between A and B than between C and B, suggesting that intermixed preexposure maintains the effective salience of A and B and does not establish inhibition between them, a process that would require prolonged preexposure. According to this analysis, salience modulation and associative inhibition may contribute to perceptual learning at different stages of preexposure. Demonstrations of retrospective revaluation suggest that remembered stimuli undergo a reduction in association with the unconditioned stimulus (US) present during learning. Conversely, demonstrations of mediated conditioning in flavor-conditioning experiments with rats suggest that remembered stimuli undergo an increase in association with the US present during learning. In a food allergy prediction task with 23 undergraduates, we demonstrated simultaneous backward conditioned inhibition and mediated conditioning effects. These results are compatible with the hypothesis that the direction of change (decrease or increase) in associative strength depends on whether the remembered stimulus was of a different category (conditioned stimulus/antecedent) or the same category (US/outcome) as the presented US. Pavlovian-conditioned inhibition training of the form A++, AB- (where ++ is a strong reinforcer and - is nonreinforcement) was conducted in 3 experiments with rats and 1 with pigeons. Then AB + training was given (in which + is an effective reinforcer that is weaker than ++). The + reinforcer was achieved by reducing the frequency, lessening the amount, or lengthening the delay with which ++ was delivered. All 4 experiments found the AB+ treatment to enhance responding to both the excitatory A and the inhibitory B in comparison with untreated control stimuli. However, when appropriate assessments were made, the increase was more substantial for the inhibitory B. This pattern of results presents challenges for most current theories of associative learning. The present study tested whether presentation of a taste cue would support conditioned suppression of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) following a single taste-drug pairing. Nondeprived male Sprague-Dawley rats were given 20-min access to a 0.15% saccharin conditioned stimulus (CS). Immediately thereafter, experimental rats were injected with morphine (15 mg/kg ip); standard controls were injected with saline; and explicitly unpaired controls were injected with morphine, but approximately 24 hr later. All rats were then given one 20-min CS-only test. Microdialysis samples from the NAcc were measured over 20-min intervals before, during, and after CS access on the conditioning and test trial. The results showed that a single saccharin-morphine pairing led to a marked reduction in CS intake, and the reduction in intake was accompanied by a conditioned blunting of the accumbens dopamine response to the saccharin reward cue. In turn, a single exposure to the saccharin cue also blunted the unconditioned dopamine response to morphine. Reward comparison effects, then, are cross-modal, bidirectional, and immediate, resulting in both unconditioned and conditioned changes in brain and behavior. The present experiments studied the role of error correction mechanisms in the latent inhibition of conditioned fear responses by conditioned stimulus (CS) preexposure. They demonstrated that a preexposed CS subjected to additional exposures in compound with either another preexposed stimulus or a novel stimulus was more latently inhibited than a preexposed CS which received additional exposures in isolation. They also showed that a preexposed CS subjected to additional exposures in compound with another preexposed stimulus was more latently inhibited than a preexposed CS given additional exposures in compound with a novel stimulus. These results were discussed in terms of the Hall–Rodriguez (2010) model of latent inhibition. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The effects of lesions of the medial dorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) on blocking and latent inhibition (LI) of the rat eyeblink response were examined in the present study. Previous work has demonstrated that the cingulate cortex and related thalamic areas are involved in processing conditioning stimuli throughout training. The experiments in the present study tested the hypothesis that disruption of cingulothalamic stimulus processing produced by lesions of the MD would impair 2 types of associative learning that involve decremental changes in attention. In Experiment 1, MD lesions severely impaired blocking. In Experiment 2, NM lesions severely impaired LT. The results indicate that lesions of the NM impair incremental, decremental, or both types of changes in stimulus processing during learning. Rats searched in a matrix of vertical poles for food hidden on top of the poles. The only information available about the location of the food was the consistent spatial pattern of the baited poles, which was a checkerboard. This spatial pattern of hidden-food locations came to control the choices of poles made by the rats. The experiments ruled out the possibility that this control can be explained by the acquisition of simple response tendencies to move from pole to pole. Instead, this behavioral control of choices was attributed to the development of a representation of the checkerboard pattern of baited locations. Spatial pattern learning may have mechanisms in common with other forms of pattern learning. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Both the dorsal and median raphe nuclei of the midline brainstem region in rats were lesioned with the neurotoxin 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine. Rats were then surgically implanted with intraoral cannulas for fluid delivery and received a single conditioning trial in which 2-min saccharin infusion was followed by either lithium or saline administration. The conditioned gaping seen in the lithium-conditioned rats was significantly attenuated by raphe lesions, indicating that reduction of forebrain serotonin levels interferes with conditioned gaping. However, lesioned rats still expressed comparable conditioned taste avoidance as measured by both the 1- and 2-bottle consumption tests. These results parallel previous pharmacological findings indicating that reduction of serotonin activity interferes with conditioned gaping, but not conditioned taste avoidance. Conditioned inhibition (CI) of the rat eyeblink response and the neuronal correlates of CI in the cerebellar interpositus nucleus were examined in the present study. In Experiment 1, CI was established with a novel, 3-group design. In Experiment 2, neuronal activity in the anterior interpositus nucleus was recorded during CI training and testing. Each rat was given 2 training phases and then tested for CI with summation and retardation tests. Rats given CI training showed behavioral inhibition compared with rats in 2 control groups. Neuronal activity in the anterior interpositus nucleus correlated with behavioral responding during discrimination training and during the summation test. The results suggest that neurons in the cerebellar anterior interpositus nucleus may participate in the acquisition or expression of CI.
