Rayleigh–Benard (R-B) convection in water-based alumina (Al2O3) nanofluid is analyzed based on a single-component non-homogeneous volume fraction model (SCNHM) using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The present model accounts for the slip mechanisms such as Brownian and thermophoresis between the nanoparticle and the base fluid. The average Nusselt number at the bottom wall for pure water is compared to the previous numerical data for natural convection in a cavity and a good agreement is obtained. The parameters considered in this study include the Rayleigh number of the nanofluid, the volume fraction of alumina nanoparticle and the aspect ratio of the cavity. For the Al2O3/water nanofluid, it is found that heat transfer rate decreases with an increase of the volume fraction of the nanoparticle. The results are demonstrated and explained with average Nusselt number, isotherms, streamlines, heat lines, and nanoparticle distribution. The effect of nanoparticles on the onset of instability in R-B convection is also analyzed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The heat transfer characteristics of liquid droplets are influenced by the hydrophobicity of the surfaces. Fluid properties and surface energy play important roles in heat transfer assessment. In the present study, the influence of the contact angle on the flow field developed inside a nanofluid droplet consisting of a mixture of water and carbon nanotubes (CNT) is investigated. Flow field and heat transfer characteristics are simulated numerically in line with the experimental conditions. It is found that the flow velocity predicted numerically is in good agreement with the experimental data. Nusselt and Bond numbers increase at large contact angles and Marangoni force dominates over buoyancy force.  相似文献

In the present experimental investigation, stable CuO–Base oil nanofluids with different particle weight fractions of 0.2% to 2% are prepared. Then, these fluids are used for heat transfer measurements as well as rheological behavior investigation. Density, thermal conductivities, viscosities and specific heat capacities of base fluid and all nanofluids at different temperatures are measured and the effect of nanoparticles concentration on fluid properties is investigated. Also, heat transfer characteristics of CuO–Base oil nanofluids laminar flow in a smooth tube under constant heat flux are studied experimentally. Experimental results clearly indicate that addition of nanoparticles into the base fluid enhances the thermal conductivity of the fluid and the enhancement increases with increasing of particle concentration. For the particle concentrations tested, nanofluids exhibit Newtonian behavior. It is observed that the dynamic viscosity substantially increases with the increase in nanoparticle concentration and this increase is more pronounced at the lower temperatures of the nanofluid. The specific heat capacity of nanofluids is significantly less than that of base fluid and it is decreased with the increase in nanofluid concentration. The results show that for a specific nanoparticle concentration, there is an increase in heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid flow compared to pure oil flow. A maximum increase of 12.7% in Heat Transfer coefficient was observed for 2 wt.% nanofluid at the highest Reynolds number studied in this investigation. Furthermore, heat transfer coefficients obtained using experimental fluid properties are compared to those obtained using the existing theoretical models for fluid properties.  相似文献

This work is focused on the numerical modeling of steady laminar natural convection flow in an annulus filled with water–alumina nanofluid. The inner surface of the annulus is heated uniformly by a uniform heat flux q and the outer boundary is kept at a constant temperature Tc. Two thermal conductivity models namely, the Chon et al. model and the Maxwell Garnett model, are used to evaluate the heat transfer enhancement in the annulus. The governing equations are solved numerically subject to appropriate boundary conditions by a penalty finite-element method. A parametric study is conducted and a selective set of graphical results is presented and discussed to illustrate the effects of the presence of nanoparticles, the Prandtl number and the Grashof number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for both nanofluid models. It is found that significant heat transfer enhancement can be obtained due to the presence of nanoparticles and that this is accentuated by increasing the nanoparticles volume fraction and Prandtl number at moderate and large Grashof number using both models. However, for the Chon et al. model the greatest heat transfer rate is obtained.  相似文献

A numerical study is conducted to investigate the transport mechanism of free convection in a trapezoidal enclosure filled with water–Cu nanofluid. The horizontal walls of the enclosure are insulated while the inclined walls are kept at constant but different temperatures. The numerical approach is based on the finite element technique with Galerkin's weighted residual simulation. Solutions are obtained for a wide range of the aspect ratio (AR) and Prandtl number (Pr) with Rayleigh number (Ra = 105) and solid volume fraction (? = 0.05). The streamlines, isotherm plots and the variation of the average Nusselt number at the left hot wall are presented and discussed. It is found that both AR and Pr affect the fluid flow and heat transfer in the enclosure. A correlation is also developed graphically for the average Nusselt number as a function of the Prandtl number as well as the cavity aspect ratio.  相似文献

In this study, the cooling performance of Al2O3–H2O nanofluid was experimentally investigated as a much better developed alternative for the conventional coolant. For this purpose the nanofluid was passed through the custom-made copper minichannel heat sink which is normally attached with the electronic heat source. The thermal performance of the Al2O3–H2O nanofluid was evaluated at different volume fraction of the nanoparticle as well as at different volume flow rate of the nanofluid. The volume fraction of the nanoparticle varied from 0.05 vol.% to 0.2 vol.% whereas the volume flow rate was increased from 0.50 L/min to 1.25 L/min. The experimental results showed that the nanofluid successfully has minimized the heat sink temperature compared to the conventional coolant. It was noticed also that the thermal entropy generation rate was reduced via using nanofluid instead of the normal water. Among the other functions of the nanofluid are to increase the frictional entropy generation rate and to drop the pressure which are insignificant compared to the normal coolant. Given the improved performance of the nanofluid, especially for high heat transportation capacity and low thermal entropy generation rate, it could be used as a better alternative coolant for the electronic cooling system instead of conventional pure water.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of rotation on the onset of thermal convection in a horizontal layer of nanofluid saturated by a Darcy–Brinkman porous medium is considered. A linear stability analysis based upon normal mode is used to find solution of the fluid layer confined between two free boundaries. The onset criterion for stationary and oscillatory convection is derived analytically and graphically. The effects of the concentration Rayleigh number, Taylor number, Lewis number, Darcy number and modified diffusivity ratio on the stability of the system are investigated. The sufficient conditions for the non-existence of overstability are also derived.  相似文献

This work is focused on the numerical modeling of steady laminar combined convection flow in a vertical triangular wavy enclosure filled with water–CuO nanofluid. The left and right vertical walls of the cavity take the form of a triangular wavy pattern. The bottom and top horizontal walls are mechanically driven. The lower and upper surfaces move to the right and left direction at the same constant speed respectively. They maintain constant temperature lower than both vertical walls. Two different nanofluid models namely, the Brinkman model and the Pak and Cho correlation are employed. The developed equations are given in terms of the Navier Stokes and the energy equation and are non-dimensionalized and then solved numerically subject to appropriate boundary conditions by the Galerkin's finite-element method. Comparisons with published work are performed and found to be in good agreement. A parametric study is conducted and a selective set of graphical results is presented. The effects of the Reynolds number, Richardson number and the nanoparticles volume fraction on the flow and heat transfer characteristics in the cavity are displayed to compare the predictions obtained by the two different nanofluid models. Heat transfer enhancement can be obtained significantly due to the presence of nanoparticles. The rate of heat transfer is accentuated moderately by falling the Richardson number and rising the Reynolds number as well as the solid volume fraction.  相似文献

In several biotechnological processes, multiple slips are the most paramount, such as blood pumping from the heart to different body components, endoscopy treatment, pabulum distribution, and the heat transport phenomenon regulation. In the current research, we have studied the multiple slips, Darcy–Forchheimer, and Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model on a stretching surface exposed to magnetic carbon nanotube nanofluid. We have additionally included a heat source or sink, a chemical reaction for manipulating the heat and mass transport phenomena. The resulting governing partial differential equations have been transformed into ordinary differential equations. With the Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg fourth–fifth-order procedure, the transformed governing equations are numerically solved. Numerical solutions for different parameters for velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles (Eckert number, velocity slip, thermal slip, mass slip, etc.) are highlighted. Graphical and numerical results for the various parameters in the modeled problem have been outlined. The present numerical results are compared with the published ones for some limiting cases. The slip has been found to control the flow of the boundary layer.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is conducted into the effects of the particle volume fraction on the spray heat transfer performance of a nanofluid comprising de-ionized water and Al2O3 particles with a diameter of 35 nm. The tests are performed with a flat, horizontal heated surface using a nozzle with an orifice diameter of 0.7 mm and a nozzle-to-heated surface distance of 17 mm. The spray mass flux is varied in the range of 26.433–176.751 kg/m2 s, while the particle volume fraction is specified as 0%, 0.001%, 0.025%, or 0.05%. It is found that the optimal heat transfer performance is obtained using a particle volume fraction of 0.001%. The surface compositions of the sprayed samples are observed using scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the surfaces sprayed with a nanofluid containing 0.025 Vol% or 0.05 Vol% of nanoparticles contain a small amount of Al. However, those cooled using a nanofluid with a particle volume fraction of 0% or 0.001% show no traces of Al.  相似文献

This study's primary objective is to analyze the entropy generation in an unsteady magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) Eyring–Powell nanofluid flow. A surface that stretched out exponentially induced flow. The influences of thermal radiation, thermophoresis, and Brownian motion are also taken into consideration. The mathematical formulation for the transport of mass, momentum, and heat described by a set of partial differential equation is used, which is then interpreted by embracing the homotopy analysis method and with a fourth-order precision program (bvp4c). Graphical results display the consequences of numerous parameters on velocity, temperature, concentration, and entropy generation. Moreover, escalating amounts of the magnetic parameter, thermal radiation parameter, Reynolds number, and Brinkman number improve the entropy profile of the nanofluid. The rate of heat flux and the mass flux conspicuously improves for non-Newtonian fluid as compared to Newtonian fluid.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A numerical simulation of magneto-hydrodynamic mixed convection flow and heat transfer of Cu–water nanofluid in a square cavity filled with a Darcian porous medium with a partial slip is numerically investigated. The left and right walls of the cavity are moving up with a constant speed in vertical direction, and the partial slip effect is considered along these walls. The top and bottom walls of the cavity are assumed to be adiabatic. The right vertical wall of the cavity is assumed to be kept at a lower temperature, while the left vertical wall is kept at a higher temperature. The developed equations of the mathematical model are nondimensionalized and then solved numerically subject to appropriate boundary conditions by the finite-volume method. A parametric study is performed and a set of graphical results is presented and discussed to demonstrate interesting features of the solution.  相似文献

In the present analysis, our aim is to investigate the mass and heat transport of silver (Ag)–ethylene glycol (EG) and copper (Cu)–EG-based nanofluids between two rotating stretchable disks under the convective boundary conditions. We have also incorporated Cattaneo–Christov heat flux, thermal radiation, and chemical reaction in the fluid flow. The system of coupled partial differential equations is transformed into ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformations. The finite element method has been accomplished to find numerical solutions to transformed equations. The behavior of radial and tangential velocity, temperature fields, and concentration fields influenced by the various parameters are sketched through graphs. The local skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number are also calculated for the pertinent parameters and displayed the results through tables. It is perceived that velocity sketches of both nanoliquids degenerate with larger values of thermal relaxation parameters. Also, the values local Nusselt number of both Ag–EG, and Cu–EG based Cattaneo–Christov nanofluid intensifies with improving values of stretching parameter at the lower disk, whereas, it impedes at the upper disk.  相似文献

In this paper the lattice Boltzmann method is used to investigate the effect of nanoparticles on natural convection heat transfer in two-dimensional horizontal annulus. The study consists of an annular-shape enclosure, which is created between a heated triangular inner cylinder and a circular outer cylinder. The inner and outer surface temperatures were set as hot (Th) and cold temperatures (Tc), respectively and assumed to be isotherms. The effect of nanoparticle volume fraction to the enhancement of heat transfer was examined at different Rayleigh numbers. Furthermore, the effect of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal eccentricities at various locations is examined at Ra = 104. The result is presented in the form of streamlines, isotherms, and local and average Nusselt number. Results show that the Nusselt number and the maximum stream functions increase by augmentation of solid volume fraction. Average Nusselt number increases when the inner cylinder moves downward, but it decreases, when the location of inner cylinder changes horizontally.  相似文献

The Catteno–Christov heat flux plays a dynamic role in flow of heat enhancement in various manufacturing, industrial, and engineering applications. This present work focuses on the influence of Catteno–Christov heat flux model on Darcy–Forchheimer flow of a hybrid nanofluid placed in a porous medium. The formulation of the mathematical model is done by considering a fluid with two different nanoparticles Al2O3 and Cu dispersed in the water as the base fluid. The set of partial differntial equations is reduced by using similarity variables and boundary conditions to obtain ordinary differntial equations. The coupled nonlinear governing differential equations are solved using Runge–Kutta fourth–fifth order (RKF-45). The impact of numerous dimensionless parameters on the velocity, thermal, and concentration profiles are plotted and studied. Furthermore, the coefficient of skin friction for the relevant parameters are analysed through graphs. Result reveals that, increase in the porosity parameter declines the velocity gradient and shoots up the thermal and concentration gradients. Inclination in magnetic parameter declines velocity and concentration profiles due to the Lorentz force. Enhancement in the thermal relaxation parameter declines the thermal profile. Inclination in homogeneous-heterogeneous reaction parameters declines the mass transfer rate. Also, the well-known differential transform method is used for the validity of RKF-45 method and an impressive agreement is noticed between the results of RKF-45 and DTM.  相似文献

In this paper, CuO–H2O nanofluid forced convection in a lid driven porous cavity is investigated under the impact of magnetic field. Shape effect of nanoparticles and Brownian motion impact on nanofluid properties are taken into consideration. Vorticity stream function formulation is utilized. The solutions of final equations are obtained by CVFEM. Graphs are shown for different values of Darcy number (Da), CuO–H2O volume fraction (?), Reynolds (Ra) and Hartmann (Ha) numbers. Outputs indicate that selecting Platelet shaped nanoparticles results the highest heat transfer rate. Nusselt number augments with rise of Darcy and Reynolds number while it decreases with augment of Lorentz forces.  相似文献

Solar thermal collectors have significant importance due to its wide use in solar thermal technology. Augmentation of heat transfer is a key challenge for solar thermal technology. A quarter circular solar thermal collectors is investigated throughout the paper introducing carbon nanotube (CNT)–water nanofluid in the cavity. Tilt angle of this type of collector plays a vital role and heat transfer can be maximized for a particular tilt angle and solid volume fraction of the nanofluid. Galerkin weighted residual of FEM has been applied for the numerical solution of the problem. Grid independency test and code validation have been assessed for the accuracy of numerical solution. In this paper a wide range of solid volume fraction (δ = 0 to δ = 0.12) and tilt angle (ϕ = 0 to ϕ = 60°) has been investigated for Rayleigh number (Ra = 105–108) with varying dimensionless times. It has been found that both solid volume fraction and tilt angle play vital roles for the augmentation of heat transfer and a good heat transfer characteristic can be obtained by compromising between these two parameters. The results are shown using streamline, isotherm contour and related graph and chart.  相似文献

The present study aims to explore experimentally the influence of elevated inlet fluid temperature on the turbulent forced convective heat transfer effectiveness of using alumina–water nanofluid over pure water in an iso-flux heated horizontal circular tube at a fixed heating power. A copper circular pipe of inner diameter 3.4 mm was used in the forced convection experiments undertaken for the pertinent parameters in the following ranges: the inlet fluid temperature, Tin = 25 °C, 37 °C and 50 °C; the Reynolds number, Rebf = 3000–13,000; the mass fraction of the alumina nanoparticles in the water-based nanofluid formulated, ωnp = 0, 2, 5, and 10 wt.%; and the heating flux, qo = 57.8–63.1 kW/m2. The experimental results clearly indicate that the turbulent forced convection heat transfer effectiveness of the alumina–water nanofluid over that of the pure water can be further uplifted by elevating its inlet temperature entering the circular tube well above the ambient, thereby manifesting its potential as an effective warm functional coolant. Specifically, an increase in the averaged heat transfer enhancement of more than 44% arises for the nanofluid of ωnp = 2 wt.% as the inlet fluid temperature is increased from 25 °C to 50 °C.  相似文献
