This paper is concerned with stress intensity factors for cracks emanating from a triangular or square hole under biaxial loads by means of a new boundary element method. The boundary element method consists of the constant displacement discontinuity element presented by Crouch and Starfied and the crack‐tip displacement discontinuity elements proposed by the author. In the boundary element implementation, the left or the right crack‐tip displacement discontinuity element is placed locally at the corresponding left or right crack tip on top of the constant displacement discontinuity elements that cover the entire crack surface and the other boundaries. The method is called a Hybrid Displacement Discontinuity Method (HDDM). Numerical examples are included to show that the method is very efficient and accurate for calculating stress intensity factors for plane elastic crack problems. In addition, the present numerical results can reveal the effect of the biaxial loads on stress intensity factors.  相似文献

New enrichment functions are proposed for crack modelling in orthotropic media using the extended finite element method (XFEM). In this method, Heaviside and near‐tip functions are utilized in the framework of the partition of unity method for modelling discontinuities in the classical finite element method. In this procedure, by using meshless based ideas, elements containing a crack are not required to conform to crack edges. Therefore, mesh generation is directly performed ignoring the existence of any crack while the method remains capable of extending the crack without any remeshing requirement. Furthermore, the type of elements around the crack‐tip remains the same as other parts of the finite element model and the number of nodes and consequently degrees of freedom are reduced considerably in comparison to the classical finite element method. Mixed‐mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) are evaluated to determine the fracture properties of domain and to compare the proposed approach with other available methods. In this paper, the interaction integral (M‐integral) is adopted, which is considered as one of the most accurate numerical methods for calculating stress intensity factors. Two full-field macroscale methods are introduced for estimating fatigue crack opening levels based on digital image correlation (DIC) displacement measurements near the crack tip. Crack opening levels from these two full-field methods are compared to results from a third (microscale) method that directly measures opening of the crack flanks immediately behind the crack tip using two-point DIC displacement gages. Of the two full-field methods, the first one measures effective stress intensity factors through the displacement field (over a wide region behind and ahead of the crack tip). This method reveals crack opening levels comparable to the limiting values (crack opening levels far from the crack tip) from the third method (microscale). The second full-field method involves a compliance offset measurement based on displacements obtained near the crack tip. This method delivers results comparable to crack tip opening levels from the microscale two-point method. The results of these experiments point to a normalized crack tip opening level of 0.35 for R ∼ 0 loading in grade 2 titanium. This opening level was found at low and intermediate ΔK levels. It is shown that the second full-field macroscale method indicates crack opening levels comparable to surface crack tip opening levels (corresponding to unzipping of the entire crack). This indicates that effective stress intensity factors determined from full-field displacements could be used to predict crack opening levels.  相似文献

This paper concerns stress intensity factors of cracks emanating from a triangular or square hole in an infinite plate subjected to internal pressure calculated by means of a boundary element method, which consists of constant displacement discontinuity element presented by Crouch and Starfied and crack tip displacement discontinuity elements proposed by the author. Numerical examples are included to show that the method is very efficient and accurate for calculating stress intensity factors of plane elasticity crack problems. Specifically, the numerical results of stress intensity factors of cracks emanating from a triangular or square hole in an infinite plate subjected to internal pressure are given.  相似文献

A method for evaluating mode I, mode II and mixed-mode stress intensity factors from in-plane displacement fields using the method of nonlinear least-squares is proposed in this paper. Along with stress intensity factors, crack tip location and rigid body displacement components are determined simultaneously from both displacement components obtained using full-field optical methods or numerical methods. The effectiveness is validated by applying the proposed method to mixed-mode displacement fields obtained through digital image correlation, displacement fields obtained by analysis using elasto-plastic finite element method, and displacement fields around a fatigue crack obtained by electronic speckle pattern interferometry. Results show that the proposed method can extract stress intensity factors from the displacement fields both accurately and easily. Furthermore, they can be determined even if the material at a crack tip exhibits small-scale yielding. It is expected that the proposed method is applicable to various fracture problems during experimental and numerical evaluation of structural components.  相似文献

This note concerns with stress intensity factors of cracks emanating from a square hole in rectangular plate under biaxial loads by means of the boundary element method which consists of the non-singular displacement discontinuity element presented by Crouch and Starfied and the crack tip displacement discontinuity elements proposed by the author. In the boundary element implementation the left or the right crack tip displacement discontinuity element is placed locally at corresponding left or right crack tip on top of the constant displacement discontinuity elements that cover the entire crack surface and the other boundary. The present numerical results illustrate that the present approach is very effective and accurate for calculating stress intensity factors of complicated cracks in a finite plate and can reveal the effect of the biaxial load and the cracked body geometry on stress intensity factors.  相似文献

Finite element methods are used to calculate the stress intensity factors for three-dimensional geometries containing a number of depths of crack subjected to various loads. Special elements are used at the tip to represent the variation of the displacement with respect to the square root of the distance from the tip. The stress intensity factors are determined by comparison of the displacements in the special elements, by a method of virtual crack extensions, and, in one case, by an integral around the tip. With meshes containing between 50 and 100 quadratic isoparametric elements, results accurate to within 1 per cent or 4 per cent (depending on case) of known solutions are demonstrated.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to calculate and develop equations for crack–surface displacements for two‐symmetric cracks emanating from a circular hole in an infinite plate for use in strip‐yield crack‐closure models. In particular, the displacements were determined under two loading conditions: (1) remote applied stress and (2) uniform stress applied to a segment of the crack surface (partially loaded crack). The displacements were calculated by an integral‐equation method based on accurate stress–intensity factor equations for concentrated forces applied to the crack surfaces and those for remote applied stress or for a partially loaded crack surface. A boundary‐element code was also used to calculate crack–surface displacements for some selected cases. Comparisons made with crack–surface displacement equations previously developed for the same crack configuration and loading showed significant differences near the location where the crack intersected the hole surface. However, the previous equations were fairly accurate near the crack‐tip location. Herein an improved crack–surface displacement equation was developed for the case of remote applied stress. For the partially loaded crack case, only numerical comparisons were made between the previous equations and numerical integration. A rapid algorithm, based on the integral‐equation method, was developed to calculate these displacements. Because cracks emanating from a hole are quite common in the aerospace industry, accurate displacement solutions are crucial for improving life‐prediction methods based on the strip‐yield crack‐closure models.  相似文献

For the square-root singularity shear stress found at the tip of a rigid line inhomogeneity (an anti-crack) in piezoelectric media, one possible way of releasing high strain energy is to initiate a micro-crack at the inhomogeneity tip. In our current study, a dislocation pileup model for micro-crack initiation at the inhomogeneity tip is proposed based on Zener-Stroh crack initiation mechanism. An interesting and important physical result that emerges from the analysis is that the critical stress intensity factor for the anti-crack (the line inhomogeneity) can be related to the fracture toughness of a conventional Griffith crack in the same material. Analytical results further show that under mechanical loading, the critical stress and electric displacement intensity factors of an anti-crack are only related to the corresponding intensity factors of stress and electric displacement of the crack, respectively. While if the anti-crack is under displacement loading (with net dislocation pile-up at the inhomogeneity tip), the critical stress and electric displacement intensity factors of an anti-crack depend on both of the total mechanical dislocations bT and electricity dislocations bD.  相似文献

Cosserat type continuum theories have been employed by many authors to study cracks in elastic solids with microstructures. Depending on which theory was used, different crack tip stress singularities have been obtained. In this paper, a microstructure continuum theory is used to model a layered elastic medium containing a crack parallel to the layers. The crack problem is solved by means of the Fourier transform. The resulting integrodifferential equations are discretized using the Chebyshev polynomial expansion method for numerical solutions. By using the present theory, the explicit internal length effects upon the crack opening displacement and stress field can be observed. It is found that the stress field near the crack tip is not singular according to the microstructure continuum solution although the level of the opening stress shows an increasing trend until it gets very close to the crack tip. The rising portion of the near tip opening stress is used to project the stress intensity factor which agrees fairly well with that obtained using the FEM to perform stress analyses of the cracked layered medium with the exact geometry. The numerical solutions also indicate that treating the layered medium as an equivalent homogeneous classical elastic solid is not adequate if cracks are present and accurate stress intensity factors in the original layered medium is desired.  相似文献

The influence of surface effect, including surface elasticity and surface piezoelectricity, on thefracture behavior of piezoelectricmaterials with an anti-plane crack is studied.Based on the coupled surface andinterface elasticity model, the solutions to the problem are obtained by applying the singular integral method. Bycomparing the solutions influenced by the surface piezoelectricity with those affected by the surface elasticity,it is found that the influence of the surface piezoelectricity on the crack opening displacement, the crackelectric potential jump across the crack center, the crack tip stress and electric displacement intensity factorscannot be ignored. Under various electrical boundary conditions, the influence of surface piezoelectricity onthe sliding displacement, crack tip stress and electric displacement intensity factors exhibits the same tendency.Besides, the influence of surface piezoelectricity on the electric displacement intensity factor is independentof the electrical boundary conditions, which is different from the results where only the surface elasticity isconsidered.  相似文献

The evolution of the stress–strain fields near a stationary crack tip under cyclic loading at selected R‐ratios has been studied in a detailed elastic–plastic finite element analysis. The material behaviour was described by a full constitutive model of cyclic plasticity with both kinematic and isotropic hardening variables. Whilst the stress/strain range remains mostly constant during the cyclic loading and scales with the external load range, progressive accumulation of tensile strain occurs, particularly at high R‐ratios. These results may be of significance for the characterization of crack growth, particularly near the fatigue threshold. Elastic–plastic finite element simulations of advancing fatigue cracks were carried out under plane‐stress, plane‐strain and generalized plane‐strain conditions in a compact tension specimen. Physical contact of the crack flanks was observed in plane stress but not in the plane‐strain and generalized plane‐strain conditions. The lack of crack closure in plane strain was found to be independent of the material studied. Significant crack closure was observed under plane‐stress conditions, where a displacement method was used to obtain the actual stress intensity variation during a loading cycle in the presence of crack closure. The results reveal no direct correlation between the attenuation in the stress intensity factor range estimated by the conventional compliance method and that determined by the displacement method. This finding seems to cast some doubts on the validity of the current practice in crack‐closure measurement, and indeed on the role of plasticity‐induced crack closure in the reduction of the applied stress intensity factor range.  相似文献

Digital image correlation (DIC) is more and more popular to monitor fatigue crack growth and to determine the stress intensity factors. However, the posttreatment of the recorded displacement fields becomes tricky when the crack faces are not stress-free and when crack tip plasticity becomes significant. Several posttreatment methods to locate the crack tip and measure the effective stress intensity factors in such cases are compared, using finite element method-computed displacement fields, and then used on real DIC fields. An approach coupling DIC and finite element method is proposed to estimate the contact stresses along the crack.  相似文献

A weight function approach is proposed to calculate the stress intensity factor and crack opening displacement for cracks emanating from a circular hole in an infinite sheet subjected to mixed modes load. The weight function for a pure mode II hole‐edge crack is given in this paper. The stress intensity factors for a mixed modes hole‐edge crack are obtained by using the present mode II weight function and existing mode I Green (weight) function for a hole‐edge crack. Without complex derivation, the weight functions for a single hole‐edge crack and a centre crack in infinite sheets are used to study 2 unequal‐length hole‐edge cracks. The stress intensity factor and crack opening displacement obtained from the present weight function method are compared well with available results from literature and finite element analysis. Compared with the alternative methods, the present weight function approach is simple, accurate, efficient, and versatile in calculating the stress intensity factor and crack opening displacement.  相似文献

Characterizing the crack stability to predict the behaviour of ceramics designed for industrial use is a challenging issue. It requires accurate crack tip detection during the controlled crack propagation of notched bending tests. Different indirect methods are available, like for instance the compliance technique. Recently, techniques based on digital image correlation (DIC) have emerged: finite-element DIC (FE-DIC) with a finite element decomposition of the displacement field, integrated-DIC (I-DIC) based on Williams?? series decomposition of the displacement field and regularized-DIC (R-DIC) for mechanical constraints. These full-field techniques enable the quantification of the crack length and the stress intensity factor K I . In this paper, these four methods are compared in terms of measurements of crack lengths and stress intensity factors during a notched bending test. The tested material is a damageable quasi-brittle ceramic at room temperature. The non linearity of the stress-strain law of this microcraked ceramic results in a complex behaviour that is not captured by the compliance method during the bending test. Therefore the linear elastic compliance method leads to a different estimation of crack lengths and stress intensity factors compared to DIC methods. On the other hand, the R-DIC approach handles the non linear material constitutive behaviour. It allows a deeper analysis of the mechanical fields, the energy dissipation and the damage mechanisms during the crack propagation.  相似文献

This paper presents a successful implementation of the virtual crack closure integral method to calculate the stress intensity factors of an interfacial crack. The present method would compute the mixed-mode stress intensity factors from the mixed-mode energy release rates of the interfacial crack, which are easily obtained from the crack opening displacements and the nodal forces at and ahead of the crack tip, in a finite element model. The simple formulae which relate the stress intensity factors to the energy release rates are given in three separate categories: an isotropic bimaterial continuum, an orthotropic bimaterial continuum, and an anisotropic bimaterial continuum. In the example of a central crack in a bimaterial block under the plane strain condition, comparisons are made with the exact solution to determine the accuracy and efficiency of the numerical method. It was found that the virtual crack closure integral method does lead to very accurate results with a relatively coarse finite element mesh. It has also been shown that for an anisotropic interfacial crack under the generalized plane strain condition, the computed stress intensity factors using the virtual crack closure method compared favorably with the results using the J integral method applied to two interacting crack tip solutions. In order for the stress intensity factors to be used as physical variables, the characteristic length for the stress intensity factors must be properly defined. A study was carried out to determine the effects of the characteristic length on the fracture criterion based the mixed-mode stress intensity factors. It was found that the fracture criterion based on the quadratic mixture of the normalized stress intensity factors is less sensitive to the changes in characteristic length than the fracture criterion based on the total energy release rate along with the phase angle. This work has been supported by ONR, with Dr. Y. Rajapakse as the program official.  相似文献

In the evaluation of accurate weight functions for the coefficients of first few terms of the linear elastic crack tip fields and the crack opening displacement (COD) using the finite element method (FEM), singularities at the crack tip and the loading point need to be properly considered. The crack tip singularity can be well captured by a hybrid crack element (HCE), which directly predicts accurate coefficients of first few terms of the linear elastic crack tip fields. A penalty function technique is introduced to handle the point load. With the use of these methods numerical results of a typical wedge splitting (WS) specimen subjected to wedge forces at arbitrary locations on the crack faces are obtained. With the help of appropriate interpolation techniques, these results can be used as weight functions. The range of validity of the so-called Paris equation, which is widely used in the evaluation of the COD from the stress intensity factors (SIFs), is established.  相似文献
