Contends that although US psychology at present occupies a major position in world psychology, the field is growing more rapidly in many other countries. An example of international cooperation in an endeavor that could not be achieved by the psychological community of any single nation (i.e., securing the admission of the International Union of Psychological Science to the International Council of Scientific Unions) is given. A list of suggestions is presented outlining ways in which individual psychologists can take part in international psychological activities. The Committee on International Relations in Psychology confers the Award(s) for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology to an individual(s) who has made sustained and enduring contributions to international cooperation and the advancement of knowledge of psychology. In accordance with established custom, the award winners have agreed to present addresses on some phase of their contributions to research in the international psychological field at the 1997 convention. Award addresses delivered in 1996 are published in the April 1997 American Psychologist. One of the two winners are Florence L. Denmark. An activist-scholar-researcher, Florence L. Denmark has long been an energetic force in advancing psychology internationally, particularly the psychology of women and human rights. From cross-cultural research to the establishment of international congresses, Denmark's leadership has paved the way for a global perspective in psychology. Her most significant research and writing have emphasized women's leadership and leaderships styles, the interactions of status and gender, and the international contributions of women. Her professional activities have promoted the study of the psychology of women throughout the world, and she has made it possible for disadvantaged women from various countries to participate in international psychology events. The beginning of international psychology dates back to the end of the 19th century, with the 1st International Congress held in Paris in 1889, but its first official structure, the International Union of Scientific Psychology, was created only in 1951. A rapid development then followed and today, 68 national societies of psychology involving more than one half billion psychologists throughout the world are currently represented by the Union, which has indeed become the voice of psychology on the international scene. The present structure of international psychology and its various elements are presented and discussed, and the role and function it assumes are described in relation to the development of psychology as a science and a profession. Examples are given of the capacity-building role to which international psychology has given priority and of diverse research projects pursued in collaboration with United Nations agencies, such as the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and World Health Organization. Current issues, such as the unity of psychology and the archiving of primary psychological data, are discussed, and future perspectives and directions are identified. A survey conducted in 1998 by the International Union of Psychological Science showed that psychology is continuing to grow and expand around the world. At the same time, psychology faces severe challenges, including these: (a) responding to increased demands for accountability, (b) developing research that will be applicable to such problems as resolving and alleviating ethnic conflicts, (c) gaining an appropriate classification for psychology among the disciplines, and (d) helping to meet the needs of the "knowledge society." Taking stock of psychology's present resources and state of development should be a helpful exercise in planning for further development. Some proposals are suggested and more are welcomed to deal with the challenges to be faced in the international development of psychology. Reviews the important events in the American Psychological Association (APA) during 1988. Conflict and collaboration (CC) that ensued during 1988 is described; however, a brief history of APA shows that such CC has been present since APA's founding in 1892. This CC is ascribed to the range of diversity among psychologists as illustrated by the number of associations that exist. "Organized psychology" is defined and APA's role in organized psychology is discussed. It is noted that APA cannot meet all the needs within the field of psychology, hence the need for state, specialized, and international organizations, as well as other multidisciplinary groups whose interests intersect with psychology. APA as the largest association of psychologists in the world forms the integrative force in the loosely organized "organized psychology." This article reviews evidence of the increasing internationalization of the field of psychology and traces some historical developments in this globalization of psychology as a scientific discipline and profession. Many of these developments are seen through the personal experiences, professional and scientific involvements, and reflections of the author over the past 40 years. Trends in the process and content of the international aspects of psychology are discussed. These include examples of organizational efforts to increase communication and cooperation in advancing psychological knowledge internationally, as well as the conducting of transnational research projects. These efforts have increasingly addressed significant social problems of concern in many different countries. Parallel and joint efforts of psychologists from different countries have added a new vitality to the field of applied psychology, extended our research generalizations, and enriched our science. In Part I of this article, the role of international cooperation and exchange is outlined in the interest of developing cross-national understanding and goodwill among psychologists of different nationality. Part 2 describes the structure and operation of international and regional organizations of psychology, whereas in Part 3 examples are given of international educational and research programs as a way to facilitate cross-national developments. Finally, in Part 4 it is suggested that future challenges from society will increasingly require behavioral science-based approaches to meet new conditions of life. Marsella has promoted cross-cultural understanding and acceptance as a key to peace within and among nations. Marsella has conducted international research for three decades, as a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines, a project director for a psychiatric epidemiological study in Borneo, a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Culture and Mental Health Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a professor of psychology and director of the World Health Organization (WHO) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At present, in addition to holding the latter two positions, he is director of the Clinical Studies Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a member of the American Psychological Association Task Force on Urban Initiatives. Reviews the book, Development in work and organizational psychology: Implications for international business edited by Paul Jackson and Manfusa Shams (2006). This book is part of the Elsevier International Business and Management Series. Jackson and Shams state that the objective of this book is to "give authoritative accounts" of developments within work and organisational psychology for students and practitioners of international business. The editors emphasise that this book or any edited book cannot be a comprehensive work on all of the areas in organisational psychology, so they selected leading scholars from the United Kingdom and North America and invited these researchers to select a topic in their area of expertise. From this "reflective practitioner's perspective," the volume becomes a miscellany of chapters, some of which international business scholars would not consider to be international business. The main topics in international business (IB) include such things as international trade, foreign direct investment, global monetary system, international strategy, importing and exporting, global manufacturing and operations management, international marketing, global or international human resources management, international accounting, international finance, the international environment, economic and socioeconomic and sociocultural forces, and political and legal environment. Describes the growth and changes that have occurred in the development of psychology in Mexico since 1964. Universities offering training in psychology have increased from 5-20. The orientation which had previously been strictly psychoanalytic and philosophical is now including experimental and applied psychology, based on a behavioral orientation. The University of Veracruz is initiating behaviorally oriented research programs and an international invitation exchange program. It is hoped that this program will eventually lead to graduate programs for the MA and PhD degrees since a "Psychologist" degree, which is earned in a 5-yr program, has been the only one previously offered. The University has recently instituted a program giving partial financial support to those who wish to study abroad for advanced degrees. A Mexican Psychological Society has been formed with the aim of publishing the 1st Mexican journal of psychological research as soon as possible. Determined the extent to which international students from developing countries are being trained by American Psychological Association-approved doctoral training programs. A questionnaire was completed by 85 program directors. Results indicate that only a few institutions are training the majority of doctoral-level international students. Students from developing countries are less inclined to study psychology than are students from developed countries. However, once they have committed themselves to psychology, they are as likely as students from developed countries to choose an applied specialization. It is contended that the development of a truly international psychology is obstructed at this point by the massive disregard of contributions that are published in languages other than English. The role of English as a mutually agreed-on principal medium of international communication in psychology is endorsed. At the same time, 11 suggestions are presented to overcome the linguistic isolation from the communities of psychologists in which languages other than English are used to disseminate findings and conceptions. Comments on the original article, "U.S. psychology and world psychology," by M. R. Rosenzweig (see record 1986-10248-001). Rosenzweig chastised U.S. psychologists for their neglect of psychology abroad and helpfully mentioned SHARE as one of the ways in which individuals can participate in international psychology. He recommended that psychologists volunteer to host international visitors through their own institutions or through SHARE. The current author, SHARE chairperson from 1973 to 1984, notes that SHARE cordially seconds Rosenzweig's suggestion. Psychologists may register with SHARE as hosts, travelers, or both. SHARE is currently co-sponsored and financed by 10 international and national psychological organizations, including 5 divisions of APA. There are no fees to participants. Participation as a host or guest is available to members in good standing of a sponsor group. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

International psychology.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Presents a worldwide perspective on psychology, including its origins and important developments in both Western and communist countries. International associations, journals, and congresses are described. At the present time, psychology depends on Anglo-Saxon culture, especially on the US, and shares the main values of that culture. In spite of its goal of finding general laws and universal principles, contemporary psychology is still far from being an international psychology. Shows the origin and development of psychology in India from the British administration to the present. Indian psychology is influenced by the American behavioristic pattern. Many universities award Ph.D degrees in such areas as experimental, measurement, and clinical psychology. Psychotherapy has been accepted as a legitimate source of treatment. Indian psychology emphasizes writing books rather than publication of papers, since ther are few psychological journals. No national psychological organization exists.
