The present paper deals with the artificial neural network modeling (ANN) of heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number in TiO2/water nanofluid flow in a microchannel heat sink. The microchannel comprises of 40 channels; each channel has a length of 4 cm, a width of 500 μm, and a height of 800 μm. In the ANN modeling of heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number 23 and 72 datasets have been used, respectively. The experimental Nusselt number has been calculated based on three different thermal conductivity models, four volume fractions of 0, 0.5, 1, and 2%, two values of Reynolds number i.e. 400 and 1200 and three different heating rates including 50.6, 60.7, and 69.1 W. Therefore, the inputs that are introduced to the neural network are volume fraction of nanoparticles, Reynolds number, heating rate, and model number while the output of network is the Nusselt number. It is elucidated that an appropriately trained network can act as a good alternative for costly and time-consuming experiments on the nanofluid flow in microchannels. The average relative errors in the prediction of Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficients were 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.  相似文献

Effect of using Al2O3–water nanofluids with different volume fractions and particle diameters on generated entropy, hydrodynamic performance and heat transfer characteristics of a tangential micro-heat sink (TMHS) was numerically investigated in this research. Results indicated that considerable heat transfer enhancement is possible when using Al2O3–water nanofluids as coolant and clearly the enhancement improves with increasing particles concentration and decreasing particles size. However, using nanofluid has also induced drastic effects on the pumping power that increases with particles volume fraction and Reynolds number. Finally, it was found that generated total entropy decreases with increasing volume fraction and Reynolds number and decreasing particles size.  相似文献

Nanofluids contain a small fraction of solid nanoparticles in base fluids. Nanofluids cooled small channel heat sinks, have been anticipated to be an excellent heat dissipation method for the next generation electronic devices. In this study, nanofluids are used with different volume fractions of nanoparticles as a coolant for the minichannel. Al2O3–water nanofluid and TiO2–water nanofluid were tested for the copper minichannel heat sink, with the bottom of 20 × 20 mm laminar flow as a coolant, through hydraulic diameters. The result showed that adding Al2O3 nanoparticles to water at 4% of volume fractions, enhanced the thermal conductivity by 11.98% and by dispersing TiO2 to the base fluid, was 9.97%. It was found that using nanofluid such as Al2O3–water instead of water, improved the cooling by 2.95% to 17.32% and by using TiO2–water, 1.88% to 16.53% was achieved. The highest pumping power by using Al2O3–water and TiO2–water at 4 vol.% and 0.1 m/s was 0.000552 W and at 4 vol.% and 1.5 m/s was 0.12437 W.  相似文献

Analysis of microchannel heat sink performance using nanofluids   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study, silicon microchannel heat sink performance using nanofluids as coolants was analyzed. The nanofluid was a mixture of pure water and nanoscale Cu particles with various volume fractions. The heat transfer and friction coefficients required in the analysis were based on theoretical models and experimental correlations. In the theoretical model, nanofluid was treated as a single-phase fluid. In the experimental correlation, thermal dispersion due to particle random motion was included. The microchannel heat sink performances for two specific geometries, one with Wch = Wfin = 100 μm and Lch = 300 μm, the other with Wch = Wfin = 57 μm and Lch = 365 μm, were examined. Because of the increased thermal conductivity and thermal dispersion effects, it was found that the performances were greatly improved for these two specific geometries when nanofluids were used as the coolants. In addition to heat transfer enhancement, the existence of nanoparticles in the fluid did not produce extra pressure drop because of small particle size and low particle volume fraction.  相似文献

The numerical modeling of the conjugate heat transfer and fluid flow of Al2O3/water nanofluid through the microchannel heat sink is presented in the paper. The laminar flow regime was considered along with viscous dissipation effect. The microchannel heat sink with square microchannels and Dh = 50 μm is considered. The heat flux was fixed to q = 35 W/m2 with heating and cooling cases. The water based Al2O3 nanofluid was encountered with various volume concentrations of Al2O3 particles ?=19% and three diameters of the particle dp = 13, 28 and 47 nm. The analysis is performed on the results obtained for the local heat transfer coefficients based on a fixed pumping power. The results reveal a different local heat transfer behavior compared to the analysis made on a basis of the constant Re.  相似文献

This paper analyses the generation of entropy in an electrically conducting third-grade fluid through a vertical channel considering the variable thermal conductivity. Aspects of radiation, viscous dissipation, porous medium, Joule heating, convective boundary condition, and heat generation are studied. Nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations are obtained via applying suitable dimensionless variables. After that, the system is solved with the aid of using the Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg method. The numerical solutions are used to characterize the irreversibility and irreversibility ratio. It is established that the entropy is enhanced with accelerating estimations of the third-grade material parameter, Brinkman number, magnetism, Biot number, porous parameter, and the impact is decelerated with elevating values of the radiation. The rate of heat transfer is higher for the Brinkman number, and a similar impact on drag force is noticed for magnetic and Grashof numbers. All the parameters on flow, temperature, fluid irreversibility and irreversibility ratio are discussed through graphical illustration.  相似文献

In this paper, the performance of a microchannel heat sink using TiO2/water nanofluid is experimentally investigated. The dimensions of the microchannel are 500 μm width, 800 μm height, and 40 mm length, where the number of flowing channels is 40.The effects of uncertainties in thermophysical properties on the Nusselt number and friction factor are investigated by using three different sets of thermophysical models, which are based on experimental and theoretical relations. It is concluded that the use of the model which is based on experimental data is very important to estimate the friction factor, while the use of different models to calculate of thermal conductivity has no considerable effect on the prediction of Nusselt number.  相似文献

In this work, single layered (SL) and double layered (DL) flexible microchannel heat sinks are analyzed. The deformation of the supporting seals is related to the average internal pressure by theory of elasticity. It is found that sufficient cooling can be achieved using SL flexible microchannel heat sinks at lower pressure drop values for softer seals. Double layered flexible microchannel heat sinks provide higher rate of cooling over SL flexible microchannel heat sinks at the lower range of pressure drops. Single layered flexible microchannel heat sinks are preferred for large pressure drop applications while DL flexible microchannel heat sinks are preferred for applications involving low pressure drops.  相似文献

A mixed (electroosmotic and pressure-driven) flow microchannel heat sink has been studied and optimized with the help of three-dimensional numerical analysis, surrogate methods, and the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. Two design variables; the ratio of the microchannel width-to-depth and the ratio of fin width-to-depth of the microchannel are selected as the design variables while design points are selected through a four-level full factorial design. The single-objective optimization is performed taking overall thermal resistance as the objective function and Radial Basis Neural Network as the surrogate model while for multi-objective optimization pumping power is considered as the objective function along with the thermal resistance. It is observed that the optimum design shifted towards the lower values of the ratio of the channel width-to-depth and the higher values of the ratio of fin width-to-depth of channel with increase of the driving source. The trade-off between the two conflicting objectives has been found and discussed in detail in light of the distribution of Pareto-optimal solutions in the design space. The ratio of channel width-to-depth is found to be higher Pareto-sensitive (sensitivity along the Pareto-optimal front) than the ratio of fin width-to-depth of the channel.  相似文献

The present work focuses on analytical optimization of a rectangular microchannel heat sink using aqueous carbon nanotubes based nanofluid as coolant. The particles weight concentration used in this study is 0.01%. The density, the thermal conductivity and the rheological behavior of the nanofluid are experimentally investigated in order to evaluate the thermal resistance and the pumping power in microchannel under laminar flow. An analytical approach of optimization scheme was applied; it is compiled from a systematic thermal resistance model as an analysis method and the elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA2). The effects of the temperature, the channel aspect ratio, the channel wall ratio and the use of aqueous carbon nanotubes based nanofluid on the thermal resistance and the pumping power are investigated. The optimized results showed that use of the nanofluid as a working fluid reduce the total thermal resistance and can enhance significantly the thermal performances of the working fluid at high temperatures.  相似文献

In this study, microchannel heat sink (MCHS) performance using nanofluids as coolants is addressed. We first carried out a simple theoretical analysis that indicated more energy and lower MCHS wall temperature could be obtained under the assumption that heat transfer could be enhanced by the presence of nanoparticles. Experiments were then performed to verify the theoretical predictions. A silicon MCHS was made and CuO–H2O mixtures without a dispersion agent were used as the coolants. The CuO particle volume fraction was in the range of 0.2 to 0.4%. It was found that nanofluid-cooled MCHS could absorb more energy than water-cooled MCHS when the flow rate was low. For high flow rates, the heat transfer was dominated by the volume flow rate and nanoparticles did not contribute to the extra heat absorption. The measured MCHS wall temperature variations agreed with the theoretical prediction for low flow rate. For high flow rate, the measured MCHS wall temperatures did not completely agree with the theoretical prediction due to the particle agglomeration and deposition. It was also found that raising the nanofluid bulk temperature could prevent the particles from being agglomerated into larger scale particle clusters. The experimental result also indicated that only slightly increase in pressure drop due to the presence of nanoparticles in MCHS operation.  相似文献

Present investigation analyzes the issue of entropy generation in a uniformly heated microchannel heat sink (MCHS). Analytical approach used to solve forced convection problem across MCHS, is a porous medium model based on extended Darcy equation for fluid flow and two-equation model for heat transfer. Simultaneously, closed form velocity solution in a rectangular channel is employed to capture z-directional viscous effect diffusion and its pronounced effect on entropy generation through fluid flow. Subsequently, governing equations are cast into dimensionless form and solved analytically. Second law analysis of problem is then conducted on the basis of obtained velocity and temperature fields and expressions for local and average entropy generation rate are derived in dimensionless form. Average entropy generation rate is then utilized as a criterion for assessing the system performance. Finally, the effect of influential parameters such as, channel aspect ratio (αS), group parameter (Br/Ω), thermal conductivity ratio (C) and porosity (ε) on thermal and total entropy generation is investigated. In order to examine the accuracy of the analysis, the results of thermal evaluation are compared to one of the previous investigations conducted for thermal optimization of MCHS.  相似文献

Numerical analysis is performed to examine the heat transfer characteristics of a double-layered microchannel heat sink. The three-dimensional governing equations are solved by the finite volume method. The effects of substrate materials, coolants, and geometric parameters such as channel number, channel width ratio, channel aspect ratio, substrate thickness, and pumping power on the temperature distribution, pressure drop, and thermal resistance are discussed. Predictions show that the heat transfer performance of the heat sink is improved for a system with substrate materials having a higher thermal conductivity ratio. A coolant with high thermal conductivity and low dynamic viscosity also enhances the heat transfer performance. The pressure drop decreases with the channel aspect ratio and channel width ratio. Further, the thermal resistance of the microchannel heat sink can be minimized by optimizing the geometric parameters. Finally, the results show that for the same geometric dimensions, the thermal performance of the double-layered microchannel heat sink is better than that of the single-layered one, by an average of 6.3%.  相似文献

Numerical modeling of the conjugate heat transfer in microchannel heat sink is presented. As the most of the cooling applications deals with the partial heated sections, the influence of the heating position on the thermal and hydrodynamic behavior is analyzed. The laminar fluid flow regime and the water as a working fluid are considered. It is observed that partial heating together with variable viscosity has a strong influence on thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics of the micro-heat sink.  相似文献

A numerical study is conducted to predict the thermal performance of a parallel flow two-layered microchannel heat sink on heat transfer and compared to the case of counterflow for various channel aspect ratios. Findings reveal that the parallel flow configuration leads to a better heat transfer performance except for high Reynolds number and high channel aspect ratio. Further study on the horizontal rib thickness shows that lower thermal resistance can be achieved in a parallel flow two-layered microchannel heat sink with smaller thickness of middle rib.  相似文献

This study presents the numerical simulation of three-dimensional incompressible steady and laminar and turbulent fluid flow of a trapezoidal micro-channel heat sink (MCHS) using CuO/water nanofluid as a cooling fluid. Navier–Stokes equations with conjugate energy equation are discretized by the finite-volume method. CFD predictions of laminar and turbulent forced convection of CuO/water nanofluids by single-phase and two-phase models (mixture model) are compared. The parameters studied include the particle volume fraction (ϕ = 0.204 %, 0.256%, 0.294% and 0.4%), and the volumetric flow rate (V˙=10mL/min, 15 mL/min and 20 mL/min). Comparisons of the thermal resistance predicted by the single-phase and two-phase models with corresponding experimental results show that the two-phase model is more accurate than the single-phase model. In the laminar flow, the thermal resistance of nanofluids is smaller than that of the water, which decreases as the particle volume fraction and the volumetric flow rate increase. In addition, the pressure drop of both nanofluid-cooled MCHS and pure water-cooled MCHS is discussed. For the laminar flow case, the pressure drop increases slightly for nanofluid-cooled MCHS.  相似文献

The present study explores experimentally the two-phase flow instability in a microchannel heat sink with 15 parallel microchannels. The hydraulic diameter for each channel is 86.3 μm. Flow boiling in the present microchannel heat sink demonstrates significantly different two-phase flow patterns under stable or unstable conditions. For the stable cases bubble nucleation, slug flow and slug or annular flows appear sequentially in the flow direction. On the other hand, forward or reversed slug/annular flows appear alternatively in every channel. Moreover, the length of bubble slug may oscillate for unstable cases with reversed flow demonstrating the suppressing effect of pressure field for bubble growth. It is found that the magnitude of pressure drop oscillations may be used as an index for the appearance of reversed flow. A stability map on the plane of inlet subcooling number versus phase change number is established. A very narrow region for stable two-phase flow or mild two-phase flow oscillations is present near the line of zero exit quality.  相似文献

In the present work, experimental efforts have been undertaken to explore the forced convective heat transfer performance of using Al2O3/water nanofluid to replace the pure water as the coolant in a copper minichannel heat sink. The minichannel heat sink fabricated consists of 10 parallel rectangular minichannels of length 50 mm with a cross-sectional area of 1 mm in width by 1.5 mm in height for each minichannel. Hydraulic and thermal performances of the nanofluid cooled minichannel heat sink have been assessed from the results obtained for the pumping power, the averaged heat transfer coefficients based on the inlet and bulk temperature difference, respectively, with the Reynolds number ranging from 133 to 1515. Compared with the results for the pure water, it was found that the nanofluid cooled heat sink has significantly higher average heat transfer coefficients and hence outperforms the water cooled heat sink. Meanwhile, the heat transfer efficacy of using the nanofluid in the heat sink was further evaluated against the accompanied pumping power penalty.  相似文献

This work describes an inverse problem method to optimize the geometric design for microchannel heat sinks using a novel multi-parameter optimization approach, which integrates the simplified conjugate-gradient scheme and a fully developing three-dimensional heat transfer and flow model. Overall thermal resistance is the objective function to be minimized with number of channels, N, channel aspect ratio, α, and the ratio of channel width to pitch, β, as search variables. With a constant bottom area (10 mm × 10 mm), constant heat flux applied to the heat sink bottom surface (100 W cm?2), and constant pumping power (0.05 W), the optimal design values are N = 71, α = 8.24, and β = 0.6, with a minimum overall thermal resistance of 0.144 K W?1. Increasing pumping power reduces overall thermal resistance of the optimal design; however, the design’s effectiveness declines significantly under high pumping power. The N and α values in the optimal design increase and β decreases as pumping power increases.  相似文献

Experimental study was performed to investigate the cooling performance of a minichannel heat sink (Mini-CHS) with microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) particles/water as the coolants. Emphasis was focused on the evaluations of the hydraulic and thermal performance of water-based MEPCM particles in a Mini-CHS from the results of friction factor, average Nusselt number, heat transfer efficacy, temperature control effectiveness, and figure of merit with the Reynolds number ranging from 133 to 1515. The measured results reveal that the thermal performance can be enhanced by addition of MEPCM particles in water with low values of latent-sensible heat ratio (ωpcm/Stebf) and using a low flow rate of coolant as compared to those of the pure water. For instance, an increment of 52% heat transfer effectiveness can be achieved for Rebf = 133 and ωpcm/Stebf = 0.0472. It is also found that the case with lower flow rate and latent-sensible heat ratio has a better improvement of thermal resistance compared with that for the pure water. However, results also indicate that the enhancement effect may be reduced by increasing the values of latent-sensible heat ratio and the thermal performance of the MEPCM particles with higher latent-sensible heat ratio is not necessarily better than that of pure water.  相似文献
