Summary: A novel hyperbranched poly(β‐ketoester) was synthesized from 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl acrylate by the Michael addition in the presence of 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) as catalyst. 1H NMR integration experiments revealed that the degree of branching in the poly(β‐ketoester) was remarkably high at a level of 82.9%. The number‐average molecular weight of the polymer was between 2 100 and 12 000 and increased with reaction temperature and conversion.

Summary: Polyelectrolyte hydrogels containing diprotic acid moieties sensitive to ionic strength changes of the swelling medium were synthesized from N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA), N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (VP) and itaconic acid (IA) by using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator in the presence of the cross‐linker, methylenebisacrylamide (MBAAm). The swelling behavior of the ionic poly[(N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate)‐co‐(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone)] [P(DEAEMA/VP)] hydrogels were investigated in pure water; in NaCI solutions with pH 4 and 9; and in water‐acetone mixtures depending on the IA content in the hydrogel. The average molecular mass between cross‐links ( ) and polymer‐solvent interaction parameter (χ) of the hydrogels were determined from equilibrium swelling values. The pulsatile swelling behavior was also observed in response to solvent changes between the solution in water and in acetone. The equilibrium swelling ratio of these hydrogels was basically unaffected with change in temperature. The swelling variations were explained according to the swelling theory based on the hydrogel chemical structure.

Long‐aliphatic‐segment polyamides were prepared based on hexamethylenediamine and α,ω‐(CH2)x biosynthetic diacids (x = 10, 11, 12). The pertinent monomers (salts) were isolated as solids, thoroughly characterized for the first time, and then submitted to an anhydrous melt prepolymerization technique. The obtained prepolymers exhibited in the range of 5 100–11 800 g · mol?1, and the molecular weight was further increased by up to 55% through solid‐state finishing. The suggested overall polyamidation cycle was conducted at short melt‐reaction times, so as to avoid any thermal degradation, and was proved efficient, indicating similar reactants polymerizability independently of the methylene content.

Summary: An organic‐inorganic hybrid material consisting of a 3‐(methacryloxy)propyl functionalized SiO2/MgO framework was synthesized. This hybrid was successfully reacted with styrene, butyl acrylate and butyl methacrylate via a free radical emulsion polymerization to form polymer composites. The polymer composites were investigated by means of FT‐IR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC and rheometry. It is shown that the polymer is linked covalently to the organic/inorganic hybrid. Although the polymer content is rather low, the composites exhibit a polymer‐like character and enhanced mechanical properties compared to the corresponding homopolymers.

A novel N‐succinylchitosan‐graft‐polyacrylamide/attapulgite composite hydrogel was prepared by using N‐succinylchitosan, acrylamide and attapulgite through inverse suspension polymerization. The result from FTIR spectra showed that ? OH of attapulgite, ? OH and ? NHCO of N‐succinylchitosan participated in graft polymerization with acrylamide. The introduced attapulgite could enhance thermal stability of the hydrogel. Scanning electron microscopy observation indicates that the composite hydrogel has a microporous surface. The volume ratio of heptane to water, weight ratio of acrylamide to N‐succinylchitosan and attapulgite content have great influence on swelling ability of the composite hydrogel. The composite hydrogel shows higher swelling rate and pH‐sensitivity compared to that of without attapulgite.

Summary: The preparation of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐g‐TiNbO5 nanocomposites via in situ intercalative polymerization of ε‐caprolactone initiated by an aluminium complex is described. These nanocomposites were obtained in the presence of HTiNbO5 mineral pre‐treated by AlMe3, but non‐modified by tetraalkylammonium cations. These hybrid materials obtained have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Layered structure delamination and homogeneous distribution of mineral lamellae in the poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) is figured out and strong improvement of the mechanical properties achieved. The storage modulus of the nanocomposites is enhanced as compared to pure PCL and increases monotonously with the amount of the filler in the range 3 to 10 wt.‐%.

An efficient intramolecular arene‐alkene oxidative coupling of 1,4‐diaryl‐1,3‐butadienes has been developed involving the use of a 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐para‐benzoquinone (DDQ)/acid catalyst. The reaction involves the generation of a radical cation by abstraction of an electron from the substrate with DDQ, an intramolecular Friedel–Crafts‐type reaction, and the loss of hydrogen radical.

A metal‐free vinylic carbon‐hydrogen bond thiolation has been developed. Under the catalysis of iodine (10 mol%), the cyclization of α‐alkenoyl ketene dithioacetals afforded a broad range of polyfunctionalized 2‐methylene‐3‐thiophenones in good selectivity with moderate to excellent yields via tandem iodocyclization and dehydroiodination. The synthetic strategy can also be extended to the cyclization of ortho‐methylthiophenyl vinyl ketones leading to 2‐methylene‐3‐benzothiophenones.

The ternary Ziegler‐Natta‐type catalyst system based on neodymium versatate (NdV), diisobutylaluminium hydride (DIBAH) and ethylaluminium sesquichloride (EASC) was used for the in situ preparation of a compatibilized blend consisting of poly(cis‐1,4‐butadiene) (BR = butadiene rubber) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL). Poly(cis‐1,4‐butadiene)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) which acts as compatibilizer for the two immiscible polymers BR and PCL was obtained by a two step sequential polymerization with the preparation of a living cis‐1,4‐BR building block in the first stage and the subsequent polymerization of CL during the second stage. This preparation method resulted in a polymer blend comprising the homopolymers BR and PCL as well as the block copolymer BR‐block‐PCL. For detailed characterization the block copolymer was separated from the respective homopolymers BR and PCL by means of fractionation with the binary solvent mixture dimethylformamide/methylcyclohexane (DMF/MCH) which mixes well at elevated temperature and exhibits phase separation at ambient temperature. 1H NMR, IR, SEC and TEM were used for characterization of the block copolymer.

Summary: Polystyrene (PS) was toughened with ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) in the presence of styrene‐butadiene‐styrene block copolymer (SBS). Incorporation of SBS into the PS/EPDM blends clearly improved the impact properties. For PS/EPDM/SBS (mass ratio: 69/21/10) blends, the notched Charpy impact strength reached a maximum value of 26.3 kJ/m2. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that SBS was distributed on the interface between PS and EPDM. Butanone extraction and FTIR analysis found that there was a grafting reaction between PS and EPDM phase during melt compounding. Shearing and processing rheological behaviors of blends were evaluated with a Haake capillary rheometer and a torque rheometer, respectively.

Polymerization rate and copolymerization parameters of the free‐radical copolymerization of AMPS with 1‐VIm was studied as a function of the monomer feed and the pH value in ethanol. It was found that neutral and basic monomer mixtures containing the sodium salt of AMPS polymerized faster and led to polymers with a higher proportion of NaAMPS incorporated than those monomer mixtures containing the free acid. Additionally, based on the experimental data, copolymerization parameters of rAMPS = 0.3 and r1‐VIm = 0.13 were calculated for polymerization in acidic solution and rAMPS = 4.1 and r1‐VIm = 0.1 for polymerization in basic and neutral solutions. Finally, the thermal stability, rheological behavior, and intrinsic viscosity were determined for the polymers.

Stable layers of nearly monodisperse spheres of β‐polymorphic poly(vinylidene fluoride) with iridescent properties are prepared. The colloidal crystalline arrays (CCAs) were characterized by optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and FT‐IR spectroscopy. FT‐IR spectroscopic and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) studies revealed a β‐polymorphic PVF2 structure, the DSC study showed that the level of crystallinity in the CCA was much higher than that in the melt‐crystallized sample, and UV‐visible spectroscopy showed extinction peaks at 323 and 510 nm in the CCAs. The β‐polymorphic PVF2 structure, along with the optical extinction properties of these CCAs, raises the prospect of their application in optical filters and/or piezoelectric sensors.

The first enantioselective Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indoles and pyrroles with 3‐hydroxy‐3‐indolyloxindoles to access two novel types of 3,3‐diaryloxindoles catalyzed by chiral imidodiphosphoric acids has been reported. A range of quaternary carbon centered 3,3‐diaryloxindoles were synthesized in high yield (up to >99%) with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 98% ee) at low catalyst loadings (as low as 0.5 mol%). The Friedel–Crafts reaction between indoles and 3‐hydroxy‐3‐indolyloxindoles is amenable to gram scale syntheses.

Free NH 2‐(aminomethyl)indoles have been prepared via copper‐catalyzed cyclization of 3‐(ortho‐trifluoroacetamidophenyl)‐1‐propargylic alcohols in the presence of primary or secondary amines. The synthesis has been developed into a simple and very efficient domino three‐component Sonogashira cross‐coupling/cyclization/substitution process that, omitting the isolation of 3‐(ortho‐trifluoroacetamidophenyl)‐1‐propargylic alcohols, provides access to this class of compounds by treating 2‐iodotrifluoroacetanilides, propargylic alcohols, and primary or secondary amines with a copper/palladium catalyst system.

We have developed a new strategy for palladium‐catalyzed arylation reactions with triazolopyridines, wherein two different chemical transformations (C‐3 vs. C‐7) are observed by differentiating the substrates using different bases. The reactive palladium carbenoids were directly generated from triazolopyridines and underwent denitrogenative arylations with aryl bromides. Intriguingly, when potassium carbonate was replaced with potassium tert‐butoxide, direct C H arylation occurred at the most acidic position (C‐7). Moreover, two different catalytic arylation events were successfully performed in a one‐pot sequence, providing a convenient access to 6‐aryl‐2‐α‐styrylpyridines.

A cationic gold(I)‐catalyzed decarboxylative etherification of propargyl carbonates to selectively produce propargyl ethers is reported. In the reaction the gold(I) catalyst shows a distinct σ‐Lewis acidity rather than the commonly observed π‐Lewis acidity, and thus catalyzes the decarboxylation of a variety of propargyl carbonates to give the corresponding propargyl ethers with high selectivity. This reaction represents a rare example of the tunable reactivity of cationic gold(I) complexes between σ‐Lewis acidity and π‐Lewis acidity.
