This paper presents the construction and locomotion analysis of the modular robots composed of expandable cubes (E-Cubes). The kinematic properties and experiment research of the assembled modular robots are the main focus of the paper. The E-Cube consisted of only prismatic joints is a cubic module with three degrees of freedom corresponding to three mutually perpendicular directions. The modular robots are constructed by connecting the vertex or edge of the adjacent modules. In this paper, first, the modular robot system including the E-Cube hardware, connection method of modules and a potential binary control strategy is described. And then, the detailed kinematics, stability and motion simulations of three configurations assembled with four modules are analysed. After that, a set of experimental pneumatic-based robotic system is built. At last, the gait experiments of the configurations are carried out to testify the feasibility and validity of design and locomotion functions. The experiment results show the reliability of the mechanical, control and pneumatic systems and the programming and control efficiency of the binary control strategy. As extension, a modular robot with eight modules is assembled, and its different locomotion gaits are simulated accordingly.  相似文献

Multi-legged robots need fault-tolerant gaits if one of attached legs suffers from a failure and cannot have normal operation. Moreover, when the robots with a failed leg are walking over rough terrain, fault-tolerance should be combined with adaptive gait planning for successful locomotion. In this paper, a strategy of fault-tolerant gaits is proposed which enables a hexapod robot with a locked joint failure to traverse two-dimensional rough terrain. This strategy applies a Follow-The-Leader (FTL) gait in post-failure walking, having the advantages of both fault-tolerance and terrain adaptability. The proposed FTL gait can produce the maximum stride length for a given foot position of a failed leg and better ditch-crossing ability than the previous fault-tolerant gaits. The applicability of the proposed FTL gait is verified using computer graphics simulations.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the problem of automatically designing feasible and manufacturable robots made up of heterogeneous modules. Specifically, the coevolution of morphology and control in robots is analyzed and a particular strategy to address this problem is contemplated. To this end, the main issues of this approach such as encoding, evaluation or transfer to reality are studied through the use of heterogeneous modular structures with distributed control. We also propose a constructive evolutionary algorithm based on tree-like representations of the morphology that can intrinsically provide for a type of generative evolutionary approach. The algorithm introduces some new elements to smooth the search space and make finding solutions much easier. The evaluation of the individuals is carried out in simulations and then transferred to real robots assembled from the modules considered. To this end, the extension of the principles proposed by classical authors in traditional evolutionary robotics to brain–body evolution regarding how simulations should be set up so that robust behaviors that can be transferred to reality are obtained is considered here. All these issues are analyzed by means of an evolutionary design system called EDHMoR (Evolutionary Designer of Heterogeneous Modular Robots) that contains all the elements involved in this process. To show practical evidences of the conclusions that have been extracted with this work, two benchmark problems in modular robotics are considered and EDHMoR is tested over them. The first one is focused on solving a linear robot motion mission and the second one on a static task of the robot that does not require displacements.  相似文献

CONRO: Towards Deployable Robots with Inter-Robots Metamorphic Capabilities   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Metamorphic robots are modular robots that can reconfigure their shape. Such capability is desirable in tasks such as earthquake search and rescue and battlefield surveillance and scouting, where robots must go through unexpected situations and obstacles and perform tasks that are difficult for fixed-shape robots. The capabilities of the robots are determined by the design specification of their modules. In this paper, we present the design specification of a CONRO module, a small, self-sufficient and relatively homogeneous module that can be connected to other modules to form complex robots. These robots have not only the capability of changing their shape (intra-robot metamorphing) but also can split into smaller robots or merge with other robots to create a single larger robot (inter-robot metamorphing), i.e., CONRO robots can alter their shape and their size. Thus, heterogeneous robot teams can be built with homogeneous components. Furthermore, the CONRO robots can separate the reconfiguration stage from the locomotion stage, allowing the selection of configuration-dependent gaits. The locomotion and automatic inter-module docking capabilities of such robots were tested using tethered prototypes that can be reconfigured manually. We conclude the paper discussing the future work needed to fully realize the construction of these robots.  相似文献

Traditional lattice-type reconfigurable robots can only achieve the flow-style locomotion with low efficiency. Since gaits of chain-type robots are proved to be efficient and practical, this paper presents a novel lattice distortion approach for lattice-type reconfigurable robots to achieve locomotion gaits of chain-type robots. Using this approach, the robotic system can be actuated by local lattice distortion to move as an ensemble. In this paper, a rule that makes the lattice distortion equivalent to joint rotation is presented firstly. Then, a kind of module structure is designed according to requirements of the lattice distortion. Finally, a motion planning for achieving locomotion is developed, which works well in physics-based simulations of completing a serpentine locomotion gait of a snake-like robot and a tripod gait of a hexapod robot.  相似文献

Emergence of stable gaits in locomotion robots is studied in this paper. A classifier system, implementing an instance-based reinforcement-learning scheme, is used for the sensory-motor control of an eight-legged mobile robot and for the synthesis of the robot gaits. The robot does not have a priori knowledge of the environment and its own internal model. It is only assumed that the robot can acquire stable gaits by learning how to reach a goal area. During the learning process the control system is self-organized by reinforcement signals. Reaching the goal area defines a global reward. Forward motion gets a local reward, while stepping back and falling down get a local punishment. As learning progresses, the number of the action rules in the classifier systems is stabilized to a certain level, corresponding to the acquired gait patterns. Feasibility of the proposed self-organized system is tested under simulation and experiment. A minimal simulation model that does not require sophisticated computational schemes is constructed and used in simulations. The simulation data, evolved on the minimal model of the robot, is downloaded to the control system of the real robot. Overall, of 10 simulation data seven are successful in running the real robot.  相似文献

It is important for walking robots such as quadruped robots to have an efficient gait. Since animals and insects are the basic models for most walking robots, their walking patterns are good examples. In this study, the walking energy consumption of a quadruped robot is analyzed and compared with natural animal gaits. Genetic algorithms have been applied to obtain the energy-optimal gait when the quadruped robot is walking with a set velocity. In this method, an individual in a population represents the walking pattern of the quadruped robot. The gait (individual) which consumes the least energy is considered to be the best gait (individual) in this study. The energy-optimal gait is analyzed at several walking velocities, since the amount of walking energy consumption changes if the walking velocity of the robot is changed. The results of this study can be used to decide what type of gait should be generated for a quadruped robot as its walking velocity changes. This work was presented, in part, at the Sixth International Symposium on Artificial Life and Robotics, Tokyo, Japan, January 15–17, 2001.  相似文献

Kinematic Design of Modular Reconfigurable In-Parallel Robots   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper describes the kinematic design issues of a modular reconfigurable parallel robot. Two types of robot modules, the fixed-dimension joint modules and the variable dimension link modules that can be custom-designed rapidly, are used to facilitate the complex design effort. Module selection and robot configuration enumeration are discussed. The kinematic analysis of modular parallel robots is based on a local frame representation of the Product-Of-Exponentials (POE) formula. Forward displacement analysis algorithms and a workspace visualization scheme are presented for a class of three-legged modular parallel robots. Two three-legged reconfigurable parallel robot configurations are actually built according to the proposed design procedure.  相似文献

RHex-style hexapod robot is a type of legged robot which can perform multiple moving gaits according to different applications, due to its simple structure and strong mobility. However, traversing high obstacles has always been a big challenge for legged robots. In this paper, gait optimization of a hexapod robot is proposed for climbing steps at different heights, which even enables the robot to climb the step 3.9 times of the leg length. First, a previous step-climbing gait is optimized by adjusting body inclination when placing front legs on top of the step, which enables RHex with different sizes to perform the rising stage of the gait. Second, to improve the climbing heights, a novel quasi-static climbing gait is proposed by using the reversed claw-shape legs to reach the higher step. The nondeformable legs are used to raise the center of mass (COM) of the body by lifting the front and rear legs alternately so that the front legs can reach the top of the step, then the front and middle legs are lifted alternately to maneuver COM up onto the step. The simulations and dynamic analysis of climbing steps are utilized to verify the feasibility of the improved gait. Finally, the step-climbing experiments at different heights are performed with the optimized gaits to compare with the existing gaits. The results of simulations and experiments show the superiority of the proposed gaits due to climbing higher steps.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the challenge of realizing full-body behaviors in scalable modular robots. We present an experimental study of a biologically inspired approach to organize the morphology and control of modular robots. The approach introduces a nested hierarchy that decomposes the complexity of assembling and commanding a functional robot made of numerous simple modules. The purpose is to support versatility, scalability, and provide design abstraction. The robots we describe incorporate anatomy-inspired parts such as muscles, bones, and joints, and these parts in turn are assembled from modules. Each of those parts encapsulates one or more functions, e.g., a muscle can contract. Control of the robot can then be cast as a problem of controlling its anatomical parts rather than each discrete module. To validate this approach, we perform experiments with micron-scale spherical catom modules in simulation. The robots we simulate are increasingly complex and include snake, crawler, quadruped, cilia surface, arm-joint-muscle, and grasping robots. We conclude that this is a promising approach for future microscopic many-modules systems, but also that it is not applicable to relatively weak and slow homogeneous systems such as the centimeter-scale ATRON.  相似文献

A challenging task that must be accomplished for every legged robot is creating the walking and running behaviors needed for it to move. In this paper we describe our system for autonomously evolving dynamic gaits on two of Sony's quadruped robots. Our evolutionary algorithm runs on board the robot and uses the robot's sensors to compute the quality of a gait without assistance from the experimenter. First, we show the evolution of a pace and trot gait on the OPEN-R prototype robot. With the fastest gait, the robot moves at over 10 m/min, which is more than forty body-lengths/min. While these first gaits are somewhat sensitive to the robot and environment in which they are evolved, we then show the evolution of robust dynamic gaits, one of which is used on the ERS-110, the first consumer version of AIBO.  相似文献

Fault tolerance is an important aspect in the development of control systems for multi-legged robots since a failure in a leg may lead to a severe loss of static stability of a gait. In this paper, an algorithm for tolerating a locked joint failure is described in gait planning for a quadruped robot with crab walking. A locked joint failure is one for which a joint cannot move and is locked in place. If a failed joint is locked, the workspace of the resulting leg is constrained, but legged robots have fault tolerance capability to continue walking maintaining static stability. A strategy for fault-tolerant gaits is described and, especially, a periodic gait is presented for crab walking of a quadruped. The leg sequence and the formula of the stride length are analytically driven based on gait study and robot kinematics. The adjustment procedure from a normal gait to the proposed fault-tolerant crab gait is shown to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed scheme.  相似文献

Snake robots are mostly designed based on single mode locomotion. However, single mode gait most likely could not work effectively when the robot is subject to an unstructured working environment with different measures of terrain complexity. As a solution, mixed mode locomotion is proposed in this paper by synchronizing two types of gaits known as serpentine and wriggler gaits used for non-constricted and narrow space environments, respectively, but for straight line locomotion only. A gait transition algorithm is developed to efficiently change the gait from one to another. This study includes the investigation on kinematics analysis followed by dynamics analysis while considering related structural constraints for both gaits. The approach utilizes the speed of the serpentine gait for open area locomotion and exploits the narrow space access capability of the wriggler gait. Hence, it can increase motion flexibility in view of the fact that the robot is able to change its mode of locomotion according to the working environment.  相似文献

We demonstrate how multiagent systems provide useful control techniques for modular self-reconfigurable (metamorphic) robots. Such robots consist of many modules that can move relative to each other, thereby changing the overall shape of the robot to suit different tasks. Multiagent control is particularly well-suited for tasks involving uncertain and changing environments. We illustrate this approach through simulation experiments of Proteo, a metamorphic robot system currently under development.  相似文献

Fault-tolerant gaits in legged locomotion are defined as gaits with which legged robots can continue their walking after a failure event has occurred to a leg of the robot. For planning an efficient fault-tolerant gait, kinematic constraints and remaining mobility of the failed leg should be closely examined with each other. This paper addresses the problem of kinematic constraints on fault-tolerant gaits. The considered failure is a locked joint failure which prevents a joint of a leg from moving and makes it locked in a known place. It is shown that for the existence of the conventional fault-tolerant gait for forward walking on even terrain, the configuration of the failed leg must be within a range of kinematic constraints. Then, for coping with failure situations where the existence condition is not satisfied, the conventional fault-tolerant gait is adopted by including the adjustment of the foot trajectory of the failed leg. The foot trajectory adjustment procedure is analytically derived to show that it can help the fault-tolerant gait avoid dead-lock resulting from the kinematic constraint. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the proposed method is applied to the fault-tolerant gait generation for a quadruped robot walking with the wave-crab gait before a locked joint failure.  相似文献

In this paper we present a method for two robot manipulators to learn cooperative tasks. If a single robot is unable to grasp an object in a certain orientation, it can only continue with the help of other robots. The grasping can be realized by a sequence of cooperative operations that re-orient the object. Several sequences are needed to handle the different situations in which an object is not graspable for the robot. It is shown that a distributed learning method based on a Markov decision process is able to learn the sequences for the involved robots, a master robot that needs to grasp and a helping robot that supports him with the re-orientation. A novel state-action graph is used to store the reinforcement values of the learning process. Further an example of aggregate assembly shows the generality of this approach.  相似文献
