Natural fiber‐based thermoplastic composites are generally lower in strength performance compared to thermoset composites. However, they have the advantage of design flexibility and recycling possibilities. Hybridization with small amounts of synthetic fibers makes these natural fiber composites more suitable for technical applications such as automotive interior parts. Hemp fiber is one of the important lignocellulosic bast fiber and has been used as reinforcement for industrial applications. This study focused on the performance of injection‐molded short hemp fiber and hemp/glass fiber hybrid polypropylene composites. Results showed that hybridization with glass fiber enhanced the performance properties. A value of 101 MPa for flexural strength and 5.5 GPa for the flexural modulus is achieved from a hybrid composite containing 25 wt % of hemp and 15 wt % of glass. Notched Izod impact strength of the hybrid composites exhibited great enhancement (34%). Analysis of fiber length distribution in the composite and fracture surface was performed to study the fiber breakage and fracture mechanism. Thermal properties and resistance to water absorption properties of the hemp fiber composites were improved by hybridization with glass fibers. Overall studies indicated that the short hemp/glass fiber hybrid polypropylene composites are promising candidates for structural applications where high stiffness and thermal resistance is required. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Short ramie fiber (RF) was used to reinforce the polypropylene (PP). The composites were prepared in a twin‐screw extruder followed by injection molding. The experimental results showed that both the strength and the modulus of the composites increase considerably with increasing RF content. The tensile strength and flexural strength are as high as 67 and 80 MPa by the incorporation of ramie up to 30 wt %. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the best results for short natural fiber‐reinforced PP composites. However, the preparation method in this study is more simple and economic. This short RF‐reinforced PP composites extend the application field for short‐nature fiber‐reinforced PP composites. Morphological analysis revealed that it is the high aspect ratio of the fiber and good interfacial compatibility that result in the high performance of the composites. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tensile and flexural tests on specimens cut from rectangular injection‐molded plaques show that long‐fiber filled thermoplastic composites are complex, non‐homogeneous, anistropic material systems. Like all fiber‐filled materials, they exhibit through‐thickness nonhomogeneity as indicated by differences between tensile and flexural properties. The in‐plane orientation of fibers in through‐thickness layers causes the material to have in‐plane anisotropic properties. However, these long‐fiber filled materials exhibit an unexpectedly large level of in‐plane nonhomogeneity. Also, the effective mechanical properties of these materials are strongly thickness dependent. The thinnest plaques exhibit the largest differences between the flow and cross‐flow tensile properties. These differences decrease with increasing thickness. A methodology for part design with this class of materials is discussed.  相似文献

A thermoplastic pultrusion was carried out to prepare the long fiber reinforced thermoplastic (LFT) composites based on polyacetal (POM) matrix on the custom‐designed pultrusion equipment. The investigation on mechanical performance revealed that the POM‐based LFT composites achieved much higher tensile, flexural, and impact strength than the short glass fiber reinforced ones at the same fiber loadings. Such a promising reinforcement effect is attributed to the feature that the residual fiber length in the injection‐molded LFT products is greatly superior to that in short fiber reinforced ones. This takes full advantage of the strength of the reinforcing fiber itself. The scanning electronic microscopy demonstrated that the fiber fracture and fiber pull‐out concurred on the tensile and impact fracture surfaces, and the former preceded the latter. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of the POM‐based LFT composites was also intensively studied, and the results indicated that the crystallinity of POM domain was enhanced by the heterogeneous nucleation of glass fiber, but the crystallization rate was postponed due to the interspace restriction toward crystalline growth caused by long glass fiber. These kinetic parameters provided information on the processing conditions of POM‐based LFT composites for the injection and compression molding. POLYM. The long‐carbon‐fiber‐reinforced polyamide‐6/nickel powder composites were designed as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials and then were prepared through the joint processing of melt blending and thermoplastic pultrusion. The obtained composites show high conductivity and permittivity as well as a high dielectric loss with co‐addition of carbon fiber and nickel powders, which makes the resulting composites a higher level of shielding effectiveness due to the combination of conductive and magnetic fillers. The composites are capable of shielding mainly through absorption rather than reflection. On the other hand, the composites achieved significant improvements in tensile, flexural, and impact strength due to the superiority of the long‐carbon‐fiber‐reinforced technique. The residual fiber length in the injection‐molded specimens is greatly superior to the critical one predicted by the Kelly–Tyson model. This takes full advantage of the strength of the reinforcing fiber itself, thus leading to a promising reinforcement effect. The enhancement of impact toughness is due to the energy dissipation by fiber fracture as a result of long fiber effect. The morphologic investigation indicated that the fiber fracture and fiber pullout concurred on the impact and tensile fracture surfaces, and the former preceded the latter. Highlighted with both good EMI shielding properties and excellent mechanical performance, the composites designed by this work exhibit potential applications for the automotive, electronic, aerospace, and military industries. This article presents the results of a study of the processing and physicomechanical properties of environmentally friendly wood‐fiber‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) composites that were produced with a microcompounding molding system. Wood‐fiber‐reinforced polypropylene composites were also processed under similar conditions and were compared to wood‐fiber‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) composites. The mechanical, thermomechanical, and morphological properties of these composites were studied. In terms of the mechanical properties, the wood‐fiber‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) composites were comparable to conventional polypropylene‐based thermoplastic composites. The mechanical properties of the wood‐fiber‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) composites were significantly higher than those of the virgin resin. The flexural modulus (8.9 GPa) of the wood‐fiber‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) composite (30 wt % fiber) was comparable to that of traditional (i.e., wood‐fiber‐reinforced polypropylene) composites (3.4 GPa). The incorporation of the wood fibers into poly(lactic acid) resulted in a considerable increase in the storage modulus (stiffness) of the resin. The addition of the maleated polypropylene coupling agent improved the mechanical properties of the composites. Microstructure studies using scanning electron microscopy indicated significant interfacial bonding between the matrix and the wood fibers. The specific performance evidenced by the wood‐fiber‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) composites may hint at potential applications in, for example, the automotive and packaging industries. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Innovative polymers and composites are broadening the range of applications and commercial production of thermoplastics. Long fiber‐reinforced thermoplastics have received much attention due to their processability by conventional technologies. This study describes the development of long fiber reinforced polypropylene (LFPP) composites and the effect of fiber length and compatibilizer content on their mechanical properties. LFPP pellets of different sizes were prepared by extrusion process using a specially designed radial impregnation die and these pellets were injection molded to develop LFPP composites. Maleic‐anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐g‐PP) was chosen as a compatibilizer and its content was optimized by determining the interfacial properties through fiber pullout test. Critical fiber length was calculated using interfacial shear strength. Fiber length distributions were analyzed using profile projector and image analyzer software system. Fiber aspect ratio of more than 100 was achieved after injection molding. The results of the tensile and flexural properties of injection molded long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene with a glass fiber volume fraction of 0.18 are presented. It was found that the differences in pellet sizes improve the mechanical properties by 3–8%. Efforts are made to theoretically predict the tensile strength and modulus using the Kelly‐Tyson and Halpin‐Tsai model, respectively. POLYM. The effects of processing and part geometry on the local mechanical properties of injection‐molded, 30 wt% short‐fiber‐reinforced filled poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) are characterized by mechanical tests on specimens cut from rectangular plaques of different thicknesses injection molded at several different processing conditions. Stiffness data from tensile tests at 12.7‐mm intervals on 12.7‐mm‐wide strips cut from injection‐molded plaques—both along the flow and cross‐flow directions—and flexural tests on these strips show consistency of plaque‐to‐plaque local properties. Also, in addition to the well‐known anisotropic properties caused by flow‐induced fiber orientation, injection‐molded short fiber composites exhibit in‐plane and through‐thickness nonhomogeneity—as indicated by in‐plane property variations, by differences between tensile and flexural properties, and by the flexural strength being significantly higher than the tensile strength. The sensitivity of these mechanical properties to process conditions and plaque geometry have also been determined: the flow‐direction tensile modulus increases with fill time, the differences between flow and cross‐flow properties decrease with increasing thickness, and both the flow and cross‐flow flexural moduli decrease with increasing plaque thickness. While the flexural modulus is comparable to the tensile modulus, the flexural strength is significantly higher than the tensile strength. POLYM. Polymer–polymer materials consist of a thermoplastic matrix and a thermoplastic reinforcement. Recent research activities concentrate on the manufacturing of semi‐finished polymer–polymer materials in other shapes than the commercially available tapes and sheets. In particular, a pellet‐like form provides the possibility of processing the polymer–polymer material by injection and compression molding. Nevertheless, the thermoplastic reinforcement is vulnerable to excessive heat and the processing usually needs special attention. The current study investigates the processing of long‐polymer‐fiber reinforced thermoplastic pellets, namely polypropylene‐polyethylene terephthalate and a single‐polymer polyethylene terephthalate, by extrusion for subsequent compression molding applications. The flow characteristics of the material as well as the preservation of the polymer reinforcement can be handled by accurate temperature control. The tensile and impact properties decrease with increasing process temperature though. Moreover, the results prove that the use of a common long‐fiber reinforced thermoplastic process chain is applicable to the newly developed polymer–polymer material. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. This article demonstrates using sandwich injection molding in order to improve the mechanical properties of short glass fiber‐reinforced thermoplastic parts by investigating the effect of fiber orientation, phase separation, and fiber attrition compared to conventional injection molding. In the present case, the effect of short glass fiber content (varying from 0–40 wt%) within the skin and core materials were studied. The results show that the mechanical properties strongly depend not only on the fiber concentration, but also on the fiber orientation and the fiber length distribution inside the injection‐molded part. Slight discrepancies in the findings can be assumed to be due to fiber breakage occurring during the mode of processing. POLYM. Design of automotive components with over-molded short/continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites necessitates understanding of their behavior under extreme outdoor conditions. The short, quasi-isotropic and over-molded short/continuous glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP) composite specimens were prepared as per standard and immersed in water until equilibration to study their relative moisture absorption characteristics and consequent mechanical behavior. As the absorbed moisture mostly occupied the interface between fiber and matrix in laminated composite inserts and moisture absorption of short fiber composite core is insignificant, the moisture absorption of over-molded composites is just above 50% of that of laminated composites. The flexural, interlaminar shear and impact behavior of equilibrated composites is primarily governed by the quantum of imbibed moisture of composite materials. Optical analysis of failed moisture equilibrated over-molded specimens showed a marginal delamination between plies of the inserts without any perceptible damage within the short fiber composite similar to dry as molded specimens.  相似文献

The present study numerically investigates a fiber orientation in injection‐molded short fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite by using a rheological model, which includes the nonlinear viscoelasticity of polymer and the anisotropic effect of fiber in the total stress. A nonisothermal transient‐filling process for a center‐gated disk geometry is analyzed by a finite element method using a discrete‐elastic‐viscous split stress formulation with a matrix logarithm for the viscoelastic fluid flow and a streamline upwind Petrov–Galerkin method for convection‐dominated problems. The numerical analysis result is compared to the experimental data available in the literature in terms of the fiber orientation in center‐gated disk. The effects of the fiber coupling and the slow‐orientation kinetics of the fiber are discussed. Also, the effect of the injection‐molding processing condition is discussed by varying the filling time and the mold temperature. POLYM. COMPOS., 2011. © 2010 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Environmentally benign, low cost and abundantly available short pineapple leaf fibers (PALF), found mostly in the Tropical rain forest climates are ideal materials for manufacture of thermoplastic polymer‐matrix composites. Here, mechanical and thermal properties of composites of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐g‐PP) and chemically modified short PALF are studied as a function of different fiber lengths at 10 vol % fibers loading with fiber orientation in the longitudinal direction. The effects of fiber lengths and fiber loading on the morphological properties are assessed via observations by scanning electron microscopy. Fiber length of 6 mm oriented longitudinally at 10 vol % fibers loading in PP is the optimum and recommended composition, where 73% increase in impact properties, 37% increase in the flexural modulus, 33% increase in flexural strength, and 14% increase in vicat softening temperature are observed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The creep properties, that is, the velocity constant, activation energy, stress index, and time index, of a test piece (TP) cut from a glass‐fiber‐reinforced nylon 6 product were successfully determined by a compression creep test. In the determination of the creep properties, the experimental creep curves for the TP were fitted by finite element analysis (FEA). Fiber‐reinforced nylon 6 beams with different fiber orientations were also prepared, and their creep properties were successfully determined by a combination of the bending creep test and the corresponding analysis. The creep behavior of the press‐fit component composed of a metal collar and a fiber‐reinforced nylon 6 product was predicted by FEA with the determined creep properties of the TP. The predicted retention forces were in good agreement with the experimental ones. The effects of the fiber orientation on the long‐term reliability of the press‐fit component are also discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

The most common belief is that warpage in injection‐molded fiber‐reinforced thermoplastics is primarily attributed to residual thermal stresses associated with shrinkage and thermal contraction of the parts. Therefore, it is assumed that flow‐induced stresses generated during mold filling do not play a significant role. Injection‐molded plaques of polypropylene (PP) reinforced with pregenerated thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) microfibrils were generated in order to investigate the role of residual flow‐induced stresses relative to that of thermal stresses on the warpage. In an effort to relate the material parameters to warpage, the rheological behavior of these fiber‐filled systems was investigated. The shrinkage and the thermal expansion of the TLCP/PP composites, and hence, the thermally induced stresses decreased with an increase in fiber loading while the flow‐induced stresses increased. The increase in the flow‐induced stresses was attributed to increased relaxation times (this is not the only cause, but is a significant factor) with an increase in fiber loading. Therefore, it was found that in order to accurately predict the warpage of fiber‐reinforced thermoplastics, the flow‐induced residual stresses must be accounted for. It is expected that the results reported here can be extended to glass‐reinforced PP composites as well. POLYM. COMPOS., 27:239–248, 2006. © 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Silane‐grafted polypropylene manufactured by a reactive grafting process was used as the coupling agent in polypropylene/glass‐fiber composites to improve the interaction of the interfacial regions. Polypropylene reinforced with 30% by weight of short glass fibers was injection‐molded and the mechanical behaviors were investigated. The results indicate that the mechanical properties (tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Izod impact strength) of the composite increased remarkably as compared with the noncoupled glass fiber/polypropylene. SEM of the fracture surfaces of the coupled composites shows a good adhesion at the fiber/matrix interface: The fibers are coated with matrix polymer, and a matrix transition region exists near the fibers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. One challenge in injection molding of long fiber‐reinforced resins is minimizing the fiber breakage during resin plastication and resin flow into a mold. Such fiber breakage reduces the strength of the molded product. Reciprocating plastication is subjected to periodic positional fluctuations of the screw and cylinder in the molding cycle. In this study, visualization experiments were conducted on the reciprocating plastication of long glass fiber (GF)‐reinforced polypropylene with 50 wt% GF. It was found that: (1) temporary voids form in the resin during the metering process, and the pellets rotate from an orthogonal to parallel orientation in the flight direction; (2) length of the weight‐averaged fiber temporarily decreased in the middle stage of the injection process; (3) length of the weight‐averaged fiber was most strongly influenced by the waiting time; and (4) for constant waiting time, the fiber breakage could be minimized by lowering the rotation speed, lowering the back pressure, and shortening the charge stroke. This work is part of a larger experimental program aimed at developing a semi‐empirical constitutive model for predicting creep in random glass mat thermoplastic (GMT) composites. The tensile creep response of a long‐fiber GMT material has been characterized for 3‐ and 6‐mm thick material. Tensile tests showed that the variability within and between plaques are comparable with an overall variability of about 6% and 8% for the 3‐ and 6‐mm thick materials, respectively. The thicker material exhibited slightly higher variability and directional dependence due to greater flow during molding of the plaques. Short‐term creep tests consisting of 30 min creep and recovery, respectively, were performed over the stress range between 5 and 60 MPa. Three tests for determining the linear viscoelastic region were considered which showed that the 3‐ and 6‐mm thick GMT are linear viscoelastic up to 20 and 25 MPa respectively. The 6‐mm thick GMT consisting of a higher fiber weight fraction was linear over wider stress range. Furthermore, it was found that plastic strains were accumulated during creep, which suggests that a nonlinear viscoelastic–viscoplastic model would be more appropriate for long‐term creep at relatively high stresses, which will be presented in our companion paper. The magnitude of the plastic strains developed in the creep tests presented here was lower because a single specimen was loaded at multiple stress level over short durations. Hence, a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model has been developed for the two thickness materials. POLYM. COMPOS., 2009. © 2008 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

In this article, simple viscoelastic and empirical models are presented to predict and analyze the flexural creep behavior of all‐poly(propylene) (all‐PP) composites. Results of the successful application of these models to the actual creep behavior of unidirectional (UD) and cross‐ply (CP) all‐PP composites tested by short‐term flexural creep measurements over a temperature range of 20–80°C are presented. Analysis of the momentary creep behavior of all‐PP composites with different tape lay‐ups are made to understand their deformation mechanism. Further to the main theme of the article, an interesting discrepancy while predicting the long‐term creep behavior of these composites based on the time‐temperature superposition (TTS) principle and Findley power law model is visualized which has also been illustrated here.
