A series of copolymeric superabsorbent materials comprising polyacrylamide (PAM), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) reinforced with variable wt% of modified clay were prepared. The copolymer/clay composite was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The water absorbencies of poly(acrylamide‐co‐vinyl alcohol)/clay composites were measured by calculating their percentage swelling ratio. The effects of copolymerization, type of clay, and clay content on the water absorbencies were studied. The swelling was measured in acidic, alkaline, and saline condition to ensure its versatility. The results indicated a remarkable increase in swelling ratio by incorporation of modified clay having higher hydrophilicity and optimum clay loading. The poly(acrylamide‐co‐vinyl alcohol)/clay composite hydrogel was found to have better re‐swelling ability and water retention capacity compared to the virgin copolymer. The substantial enhancement of swelling properties enables the superabsorbent poly(acrylamide‐co‐vinyl alcohol)/clay suitable for agricultural and horticultural application. POLYM. A new superabsorbent copolymer, poly(sodium acrylate‐co‐sodium 1‐(acryloyloxy) propan‐2‐yl phosphate) [P(SA‐co‐SAPP)], was synthesized by a novel prepared monomer, 1‐(acryloyloxy) propan‐2‐yl phosphoryl dichloride. The swelling properties of the superabsorbent were investigated by comparison with poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA) and the copolymer of poly(sodium acrylate‐co‐2‐hydroxypropyl acrylate) [P(SA‐co‐HPA)]. The results showed that (1) the superabsorbent containing sodium 1‐(acryloyloxy) propan‐2‐yl phosphate had higher water absorbency at general testing conditions; (2) the swelling properties of P(SA‐co‐SAPP) and PSA were obviously influenced by pH of solutions, which were different from that of P(SA‐co‐HPA); (3) the swelling process and the saturated water absorbency of all superabsorbents were remarkably affected by cations, especially multivalent ones, while barely affected by anions. A novel superabsorbent composite, poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide)/potassium humate (PAA‐AM/KHA), was prepared by aqueous solution polymerization from acrylic acid, acrylamide, and potassium humate (KHA) with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and potassium peroxydisulfate as an initiator. The effects of incorporated KHA on the water absorbency, swelling rate, and reswelling capability were investigated. The swelling property of PAA‐AM/KHA in various saline solutions was studied systematically. The results show that the comprehensive properties and especially salt‐resistant ability of PAA‐AM/KHA were enhanced. There was a linear relationship between the saturated water absorbency and the minus square root of the ionic strength of the external medium, and the water absorbency of PAA‐AM/KHA in various salt solutions had the following order: NH4Cl(aq) = KCl(aq) = NaCl(aq) > MgCl2(aq) > CaCl2(aq) > AlCl3(aq) > FeCl3(aq). Moreover, the polymeric net structure of PAA‐AM/KHA was examined with respect to that of poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide). The results indicate that the polymeric net of PAA‐AM/KHA was improved by the introduction of a moderate amount of KHA into the superabsorbent composite and made more suitable for agriculture and horticulture applications. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide)/halloysite nanotubes [PAA‐AM/HNTs] superabsorbent composite was synthesized by free radical polymerization with using HNTs as an inorganic additive. The composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results revealed that HNTs and PAA‐AM were combined well together to form a porous structure with a pore size of about 10 μm, and HNTs were uniformly distributed in the composite. The thermal stability was improved by adding HNTs in the composite. The influences of contents of initiator and halloysite, neutralization degree of AA, and molar ratio of AM to AA on water absorbency were investigated. The water absorbency and the water retention capacity were improved after adding HNTs into PAA‐AM. The composite containing 10% HNTs had the highest water absorbency of 1276 g/g in distilled water. Moreover, PAA‐AM/HNTs composite also had a high swelling rate within 60 min and could maintain 78% initial swelling capability after five reswelled test. The substantial enhancement of swelling properties enables PAA‐AM/HNTs suitable for numerous practical applications. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:229–236, 2015. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

In this work, a novel poly(acrylic acid‐coN‐acryloylmorpholine)/attapulgite superabsorbent composite was prepared by graft copolymerization among acrylic acid, N‐acryloylmorpholine and attapulgite in aqueous solution, using N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The result from FTIR spectra showed that  OH of attapulgite participated in graft copolymerization with acrylic acid and N‐acryloylmorpholine. Proper monomer ratio and atapulgite content could form a loose surface, and improve reswelling ability and initial swelling rate. The buffer action of the  COOH and  COO groups in the superabsorbent composite keeps the water absorbency a rough constant in the pH range of 4.4–9.6. Both polarity and structure of an organic solvent are responsible for the phase transition point of the superabsorbent composite. POLYM. COMPOS., 2010. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

A series of novel multifunctional poly (acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) (PAA‐AM)/organomontmorillonite (O‐MMT)/sodium humate (SH) superabsorbent composites were synthesized by the graft copolymerization reaction of partially neutralized acrylic acid and acrylamide on O‐MMT micropowder and SH with N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as an initiator in an aqueous solution. The superabsorbent composites were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The effect of the relative weight ratio of SH to O‐MMT on the water absorbency was studied, and the results indicated that the best water absorbency of 591 g/g in distilled water was obtained when an O‐MMT content of 20 wt % and an SH content of 30 wt % were incorporated. The superabsorbent composite possessed a good capacity for water retention; even after 30 days, 24.4 wt % of water could still be saved by the sand soil containing 1.0 wt % superabsorbent composite. The results from this study show that the water absorbency of a superabsorbent composite is improved by the simultaneous introduction of O‐MMT and SH into a PAA‐AM network in comparison with the incorporation of only O‐MMT or SH. Also, in comparison with PAA‐AM/MMT/SH, an appropriate amount of O‐MMT can benefit the developed composites with respect to their water absorbency, salt resistance, and capacity for water retention in sand soil. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Al3+‐attapulgite (Al3+‐APT) was prepared by treating attapulgite (APT) with AlCl3 aqueous solution of various concentrations. The poly(acrylic acid)/Al3+‐attapulgite (PAA/Al3+‐APT) superabsorbent composite was prepared by reaction of partly neutralized acrylic acid, and Al3+‐APT in aqueous solution using N, N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The surface morphology of the composite was investigated by SEM, and the Al3+‐APT composite generated a relatively planar surface comparing the nature APT. The effects of Al3+‐APT on hydrogel strength and swelling behaviors, such as equilibrium water absorbency, swelling rate, and reswelling capability, of the superabsorbent composites were also studied. The hydrogel strength and reswelling capability were improved, however, the equilibrium water absorbency and swelling rate decreased with increasing AlCl3 solution concentration. The equilibrium water absorbency firstly increased, and then decreased with increasing Al3+‐APT content. The results indicate that Al3+‐APT acts as an assistant crosslinker in the polymeric network, which has great influences on hydrogel strength and swelling behaviors of the PAA/Al3+‐APT superabsorbent composites. In this work, the effects of different cation‐exchanged montmorillonite on water absorbency of poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide)/montmorillonite/sodium humate (PAA‐AM/MMT/SH) superabsorbent composite were systematically investigated under the same preparation conditions. The superabsorbents doped with different cation‐exchanged montmorillonite were characterized by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy technologies. Swelling behaviors of developing superabsorbent composite in various cationic saline solutions (NaCl, CaCl2, and FeCl3) were also investigated. The water absorbencies of superabsorbent composite with 20 wt% MMT and 30 wt% SH are 638, 723, 682, and 363 g g−1 in distilled water for incorporating natural Na+‐MMT, Li+‐exchanged MMT, Ca2+‐exchanged MMT, and Al3+‐exchanged MMT, respectively. The results showed that the cation‐exchange process had some obvious influences on final water absorbency of superabsorbent composite. NaCl, CaCl2, and FeCl3 solutions did not alter the swelling characteristics of the superabsorbent materials at a concentration of less than 0.01 mM, however, a concentration of greater than 0.1 mM caused a collapse in the swelling curves. The excellent swelling‐reswelling‐swelling behavior and lower swelling rate testified that Al3+‐exchanged MMT can act as an assistant crosslinker in the polymeric network. POLYM. A new cellulose‐based superabsorbent polymer, carboxymethyl cellulose‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide), was prepared by the free‐radical grafting solution polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) monomers onto carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the presence of N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker with a redox couple of potassium persulfate and sodium metabisulfite as an initiator. The influences of reaction variables such as the initiator content, crosslinker content, bath temperature, molar ratio of AA to AM, and weight ratio of the monomers to CMC on the water absorbency of the carboxymethylcellulose‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) copolymer were investigated. The copolymer's structures were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimum reaction conditions were obtained as follows: the bath temperature was 50°C; the molar ratio of AA to AM was 3 : 1; the mass ratio of the monomers to CMC was 4 : 1; and the weight percentages of the crosslinker and initiator with respect to the monomers were 0.75 and 1%, respectively. The maximum water absorbency of the optimized product was 920 g/g for distilled water and 85 g/g for a 0.9 wt % aqueous NaCl solution. In addition, the superabsorbent possessed good water retention and salt resistance. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 1382–1388, 2007  相似文献

A series of clay-based superabsorbent composite from acrylamide (AM) and various clays, such as attapulgite, kaolinite, mica, vermiculate and Na+-montmorillonite, was prepared by free-radical aqueous polymerization, using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator, and then saponified with sodium hydroxide solution. In this paper, the reaction mechanism and thermal stability of the superabsorbent composites incorporated with various clays were characterized by FTIR, XRD and TGA, respectively. The effects of clay kind and clay content on equilibrium water absorbency of these composites were also investigated and compared. In addition, the influences of clay kind on comprehensive swelling behaviors of the PAM/clay superabsorbent composites were studied. The results indicated that the introduced clays could influence physicochemical properties of obtained superabsorbent composites. Mica could improve thermal stability of corresponding superabsorbent composites to the highest degree comparing with the other clays. The PAM/clay superabsorbent composites incorporated with 10 wt% clay of various kinds were all endowed with equilibrium water absorbency of more than 1300 g g−1. The equilibrium water absorbency decreases with increasing clay content and correlates with the kind of clay. Attapulgite-based superabsorbent composite was endowed with higher water absorbency in univalent cationic saline solution, however, the vermiculite- and the kaolinite-based ones acquired the highest water absorbency in CaCl2 and FeCl3 aqueous solution, respectively. Moreover, the superabsorbent composites incorporated with Na+-montmorillonite have higher swelling rate and that of doped with mica was endowed with higher reswelling capability.  相似文献

A series of superabsorbent polymer composites based on sericin hydrolyzed with alkaline protease (AP) were prepared by grafting with acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM). The properties of the superabsorbent polymers (SAP) by using hydrolyzed sericin with different amount of alkaline protease (nAPh‐sericin) were compared. It was found that the polymer prepared from 5APh‐sericin (the mass ratio of AP to sericin was 5.0 mg g−1) showed the highest graft percentage and water absorbency, this phenomenon may be attributed to the change of molecular weight of resulting sericin molecules. The molecular structure of the grafted polymers was proved by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements. Comparing with PAA‐AM (poly AA‐co‐AM) and 0APh‐sericin/PAA‐AM polymer, 5APh‐sericin/PAA‐AM polymer had the most excellent water retention capacity and enzyme degradability. The morphological features of the polymers with different drying methods were evidenced by SEM images. The water absorbencies of 5APh‐sericin/PAA‐AM polymer prepared with freeze‐drying were 896 g g−1 in deionized water, 424 g g−1 in tap water, and 83 g g−1 in 0.9 wt% aqueous NaCl solution. POLYM. A novel hydroxyethyl chitosan‐g‐poly(acrylic acid‐co‐Sodium Acrylate) (HECTS‐g‐(PAA‐co‐PSA)) superabsorbent polymer was prepared through graft copolymerization of acrylic acid and sodium acrylate onto the chain of hydroxyethyl chitosan. The structure of the polymer was characterized by FTIR. By studying the water absorption of the polymer synthesized under different conditions, the optimal conditions for synthesizing the polymer with the highest swelling ratio was defined. This superabsorbent polymer was further treated by the solvent precipitation method and by the freeze‐drying method. We found that the water absorption rate of the treated polymer was greatly increased and the microstructure of the treated polymer was changed from small pores to loose macro pores. The swelling processes of the polymers before and after modification fit first‐order dynamic processes. The amount of the residual acrylic acid was greatly decreased after treatments. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

In this work, a series of novel hydroxyethyl cellulose‐ g‐poly(acrylic acid)/attapulgite (HEC‐g‐PAA/APT) superabsorbent composites were prepared through the graft polymerization of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), partially neutralized acrylic acid (AA), and attapulgite (APT) in aqueous solution, and the composites were characterized by means of Fourier‐transform spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electronmicroscopy. The effects of polymerization variables including concentrations of the initiator and crosslinker and APT content on water absorbency were studied, and the swelling properties in various pH solutions as well as the swelling kinetics in various saline solutions were also systematically evaluated. Results showed that the introduction of 5 wt% APT into HEC‐g‐PAA polymeric network could improve both water absorbency and water absorption rate of the superabsorbent composites. In addition, the superabsorbent composites retained high water absorbency over a wide pH range of 4–10, and the swelling kinetics of the superabsorbent composites in CaCl2 and FeCl3 solutions exhibited a remarkable overshooting phenomenon. A series of amphoteric, superabsorbent polymers [poly(acrylic acid‐co‐diallyldimethylammonium chloride)] with different molar ratios of anionic groups to cationic groups were prepared by solution polymerization to investigate their swelling behaviors and the controlled release of agrochemicals. Various factors, including the solution pH, the concentrations of different salt solutions, and the temperature, were studied. The dynamic parameters of hydrogels at different temperatures suggested that diffusion was Fickian at lower temperatures, whereas non‐Fickian diffusion prevailed at higher temperatures. A copolymer hydrogel with a low anionic‐group/cationic‐group ratio showed a higher swelling capacity in water and higher salt tolerance. Also, the anionic‐group/cationic‐group ratio was not the dominant factor in determining the water retention. A poly(acrylic acid‐co‐diallyldimethylammonium chloride) hydrogel could control the release of agrochemicals effectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102: 986–991, 2006  相似文献

A novel chitosan‐g‐poly(acrylic acid)/organo‐rectorite (CTS‐g‐PAA/OREC) nanocomposite superabsorbent was synthesized by aqueous polymerization using N, N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. Rectorite was organified with four different degree of hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, and the organification of rectorite was proved by FTIR and XRD. The effect of organification degree of rectorite on water absorbency of CTS‐g‐PAA/OREC with different organo‐rectorite content was investigated. The swelling behaviors in distilled water and various pH solutions were also studied. The results from IR spectroscopy and XRD data show that acrylic acid had been grafted polymerization with chitosan and organo‐rectorite and formed nanocomposite. Introducing organo‐rectorite into the CTS‐g‐PAA polymeric network can improved water absorbency and swelling rate of CTS‐g‐PAA/OREC. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Graft polymerization of vinylic monomers onto natural backbones is an efficient approach for the synthesis of natural‐based superabsorbents. The nature of the monomers will affect the swelling behaviour of the superabsorbents. Here, a novel superabsorbent was synthesized through grafting of acrylic acid onto collagen in the presence of hydrophobic styrene as co‐monomer. Subsequently, the effect of styrene on the swelling behaviour of the superabsorbent was studied. RESULTS: The highly swelling superabsorbent was prepared by introducing styrene into a collagen‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel. By inclusion of styrene monomer, the swelling capacity of the hydrogel was increased; this is discussed according to the network composition. The effect of swelling media (salt solutions and various pH values) was investigated. The results of absorbency under load showed that hydrogels containing phenyl groups exhibit better behaviour; however, by introducing styrene, the rate of water uptake and resistance to water holding under heating was reduced. Scanning electron micrographs of hydrogels revealed a decrease in porosity on using styrene. CONCLUSION: Inclusion of styrene monomer in the ionic superabsorbent caused high swelling capacity with better absorbency under load. This can be used to prepare highly swelling superabsorbents with good mechanical properties. The pH reversibility of the synthesized superabsorbent makes it a candidate for use in the controlled release of drugs and in agrochemicals. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Superabsorbents used in agricultural and ecological projects with low‐cost, slow‐release fertilizers and environmentally friendly characteristics have been extensively studied. The use of a natural polymer as the matrix and then further polymerization with some functional material has become the preferred method. In this work, with natural guar gum (GG), partially neutralized acrylic acid, and sodium humate (SH) as the raw materials, ammonium persulfate as the initiator, and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as the crosslinker, GG‐g‐poly(sodium acrylate) (PNaA)/SH superabsorbents were synthesized through a solution polymerization reaction and were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of the SH content and MBA concentration on the water absorbency were investigated. The results showed that the introduction of SH into the GG‐g‐PNaA system could improve the water absorbency, swelling rate, pH‐resistant property, and reswelling capability, and the superabsorbent containing 15 wt % SH had the highest water absorbency of 532 g/g of sample in distilled water and 62 g/g of sample in a 0.9 wt % NaCl solution. The slow release in water and water retention in sandy soil tests revealed that the superabsorbent could act as a fertilizer as well as an effective water‐saving material for agricultural applications. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel poly(acrylate‐co‐acrylamide)/expanded vermiculite (EVMT) superabsorbent composite was synthesized by aqueous solution polymerization method. The water absorbency of the superabsorbent composite still reaches 850 g/g when 50 wt % EVMT is added, which is significant in decreasing the production cost of the superabsorbent composites. By controlling the molar ratio of acrylic acid monomer and acrylamide monomer, and neutralization degree of acrylic acid, the hydrophilic groups on the composite can be adjusted, and it is found that the collaborative absorbent effect of ? CONH2, ? COOK, and ? COOH groups is superior to that of single ? CONH2, ? COOK, or ? COOH group. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 104: 735–739, 2007  相似文献

The effect of acid activation and thermal treatment of attapulgite on water absorbency of superabsorbent composite were investigated. Under the same preparation conditions, superabsorbent composite prepared with natural attapulgite exhibited a water absorbency of 639 g/g and it merely kept 71% of its initial water absorbency after 5 times of swelling–deswelling–reswelling test. However, superabsorbent composites prepared with 2–10 M hydrochloric acid acidified attapulgite and 100–400°C thermal treated attapulgite respectively exhibited the water absorbency of 884–1,241 g/g and 701–1,515 g/g. Also, those superabsorbent composites can keep 87% and 85% of their initial water absorbency after 5 times of swelling–deswelling–reswelling test, respectively. These results showed that, compared with superabsorbent composite prepared with natural attapulgite, the comprehensive water‐absorbing properties of poly(acrylic acid)/ attapulgite superabsorbent composites were improved effectively by acid activation and thermal treatment of attapulgite. This improvement of water absorbencies and gel strength of superabsorbent composite may be due to synthetical factors such as changes in the crystalline structure and the specific surface area and improvement of the number and the activity of hydroxyl groups of attapulgite, which in turn influence the grafting efficiency of monomer, crosslinking density, and the structure of superabsorbent composite network. A novel superabsorbent nanocomposite based on hydrolyzed collagen was synthesized by simultaneously graft copolymerization of 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AAm). Sodium montmorilonite (Na‐MMt) was used as clay. Methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) and ammonium persulfate (APS) were used as crosslinker and initiator, respectively. The effect of reaction variables such as nanoclay content, MBA and APS concentrations as well as the AMPS/AAm weight ratio on the water absorbency of nanocomposites was investigated. Although the water absorbency was decreased by increasing of MBA concentration, an optimum swelling capacity was achieved for clay, APS, and AMPS/AAm variables. The structure of nanocomposite was identified using FTIR spectroscopy, XRD patterns, and scanning electron microscopy graphs. The effect of swelling media comprising various dissolved salts and different pHs was studied. Also, water retention capacity was studied, and the results showed that inclusion of Na‐MMt nanoclay causes an increase in water retention under heating. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
