This article investigates the effects of electron beam (EB) radiation on poly(D ,L ‐lactic acid)‐b‐poly (ethylene glycol) copolymer (PLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLA). The copolymer films were EB irradiated at doses from 0 to 100 kGy. The degradation of these films was studied by measuring the changes in their molecular weight, mechanical and thermal properties. The dominant effect of EB radiation on PLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLA is chain‐scission. With increasing irradiation dose, recombination reactions or partial crosslinking may occur in addition to chain scission. The degree of chain scission Gs and crosslinking Gx of sample are calculated to be 0.213 and 0.043, respectively. A linear relationship is also established between the decreases in molecular weight with increasing irradiation dose. Elongation at break of the irradiated sample decreases significantly, whereas its tensile strength decreases slightly. The glass transition temperature (Tg) is basically invariant as a function of irradiation dose. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that its thermal stability decreases with increasing dose. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

A poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA)/poly(D ‐lactic acid) (PDLA) stereocomplex was prepared from an equimolar mixture of commercial‐grade PLLA and PDLA by melt processing for the first time. Crosslinked samples were obtained by the radiation‐induced crosslinking of the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) stereocomplex mixed with triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC). The PLA stereocomplex and its crosslinked samples were characterized by their gel behavior, thermal and mechanical measurements, and enzymatic degradation. The crosslinking density of the crosslinked stereocomplex was described as the gel fraction, which increased with the TAIC content and radiation dose. The maximum crosslinking density was obtained in crosslinked samples of PLA/3% TAIC and PLA/5% TAIC irradiated at doses higher than 30 kGy. The stable crosslinking networks that formed in the irradiated PLA/TAIC substantially suppressed the segmental mobility for the crystallization of single crystals as well as stereocomplex crystals. The crosslinking network also significantly improved the mechanical properties and inhibited the enzymatic degradation of crosslinked PLA/3% TAIC. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Enhancing the stability of plasticized poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) is necessary for its practical application. In this study, plasticized PLLA (PLLA/PEG 80/20 wt/wt) was crosslinked under γ‐ray (Co60) in the presence of triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) as crosslinking agent. FTIR analysis revealed that PLLA, PEG, and TAIC formed a cocrosslinking structure. Crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of the crosslinked plasticized PLLA were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and tensile tests. Experimental results indicated that the crystallization behaviors of both PEG and PLLA in the blends were restrained after irradiation. The melting peak of PEG in the crystallized samples disappeared at a low irradiation doses about 10 kGy. Although PLLA still owned the behavior of crystallize, its cold crystallization temperature and glass transition temperature shifted to higher temperature. Mechanical properties of the plasticized PLLA were strengthened through crosslinking. Both yield strength and elastic modulus of the samples increased after crosslinking. Elongation at break of the crosslinked plasticized PLLA decreased with the increase of crosslinking density but remained a high value over 200%. SEM images of fracture surfaces confirmed that the ductile fracture behavior of plasticized PLLA was kept after suitable crosslinking. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Random copolyester namely, poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐sebacate) (PETS), with relatively lower molecular weight was first synthesized, and then it was used as a macromonomer to initiate ring‐opening polymerization of l ‐lactide. 1H NMR quantified composition and structure of triblock copolyesters [poly(l ‐lactic acid)‐b‐poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐sebacate)‐b‐poly(l ‐lactic acid)] (PLLA‐PETS‐PLLA). Molecular weights of copolyesters were also estimated from NMR spectra, and confirmed by GPC. Copolyesters exhibited different solubilities according to the actual content of PLLA units in the main chain. Copolymerization effected melting behaviors significantly because of the incorporation of PETS and PLLA blocks. Crystalline morphology showed a special pattern for specimen with certain composition. It was obvious that copolyesters with more content of aromatic units of PET exhibited increased values in both of stress and modulus in tensile test. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) was blended with poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) in the presence of an esterification catalyst to induce reaction between the hydroxyl groups of EVOH and the terminal carboxylic group of PLLA. Nascent low‐molecular‐weight PLLA, obtained from a direct condensation polymerization of L ‐lactic acid in bulk state, was used for the blending. Domain size of the PLLA phase in the graft copolymer was much smaller than that corresponding to a PLLA/EVOH simple blend. The mechanical properties of the graft copolymer were far superior to those of the simple blend, and the graft copolymer exhibited excellent mechanical properties even though the biodegradable fraction substantially exceeded the percolation level. The grafted PLLA reduced the crystallization rate of the EVOH moiety. Melting peak temperature (Tm) of the PLLA phase was not observed until the content of PLLA in the graft reaction medium went over 60 wt %. The modified Sturm test results demonstrated that biodegradation of EVOH‐g‐PLLA took place more slowly than that of an EVOH/PLLA simple blend, indicating that the chemically bound PLLA moiety was less susceptible to microbial attack than PLLA in the simple blend. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Directly starting from lactic acid (LA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), biodegradable material polylactic acid‐polyethylene glycol (PLEG) was synthesized via melt copolycondensation. The optimal synthetic conditions, including prepolymerization method, catalyst kinds and quantity, copolymerization temperature and time, LA stereochemical configuration, feed weight ratio mLA/mPEG and Mn of PEG, were all discussed in detail. When D ,L ‐LA and PEG (Mn = 1000 Da) prepolymerized together as feed weight ratio mD ,l‐LA/mPEG = 90/10, 15 h copolycondensation under 165°C and 70 Pa, and 0.5 wt % SnO as catalyst, gave D ,L ‐PLEG1000 with the highest [η] of 0.40 dL/g, and the corresponding MW was 41,700 Da. Using L ‐LA instead of D ,L ‐LA, 10 h polymerization under 165°C and 70 Pa, and 0.5 wt % SnO as catalyst, gave L ‐PLEG1000 with the highest [η] of 0.21 dL/g and MW of 15,600 Da. Serial D ,L ‐PLEG with different feed weight ratio and Mn of PEG were synthesized via the simple and practical direct melt copolycondensation, and characterized with FTIR, 1H NMR, GPC, DSC, XRD, and contact angle testing. D ,L ‐PELG not only had higher MW than PDLLA, PLLA and L ‐PELG, but also better hydrophilicity than PDLLA. The novel one‐step method could be an alternative route to the synthesis of hydrophilic drug delivery carrier PLEG instead of the traditional two‐step method using lactide as intermediate. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA: Mw = 19.4 × 104)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG: Mw = 400) blend films were formed by use of a solvent‐cast technique. The properties and structures of these blend films were investigated. The Young's modulus of the PLLA decreased from 1220 to 417 MPa with the addition of PEG 5 wt %, but the elongation at break increased from 19 to 126%. The melting point of PLLA linearly decreased with increases in the PEG content (i.e., pure PLLA: 172.5°C, PLLA/PEG = 60/40 wt %: 159.6°C). The PEG 20 wt % blend film had a porous structure. The pore diameter was 3–5 μm. The alkali hydrolysis rate of this blend film was accelerated due to its porous structure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 965–970, 2004  相似文献

The fabrication of honeycomb‐patterned films from amphiphilic poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PLEG) in a high‐humidity atmosphere is reported. The influence of the solution concentration on pattern formation was investigated. Moreover, by comparing the different conditions of fabricating regular structures between PLEG and poly(phenylene oxide), the mechanism of the regular pattern formation was studied. Finally, by adding sodium dodecylsulfate to a concentrated solution of 1 g L?1 PLEG? CHCl3 which otherwise could not form regular pores, we found that regular pores could be obtained. The PLEG honeycomb films are expected to be of use in cell culture, tissue engineering and many other areas. Copyright © 2007 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA), poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), and their films without or blended with 50 wt% poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were prepared by solution casting. Porous films were obtained by water‐extraction of PEG from solution‐cast phase‐separated PLLA‐blend‐PCL‐blend‐PEG films. The effects of PLLA/PCL ratio on the morphology of the porous films and the effects of PLLA/PCL ratio and pores on the physical properties and biodegradability of the films were investigated. The pore size of the blend films decreased with increasing PLLA/PCL ratio. Polymer blending and pore formation gave biodegradable PLLA‐blend‐PCL materials with a wide variety of tensile properties with Young's modulus in the range of 0.07–1.4 GPa and elongation at break in the range 3–380%. Pore formation markedly increased the PLLA crystallinity of porous films, except for low PLLA/PCL ratio. Polymer blending as well as pore formation enhanced the enzymatic degradation of biodegradable polyester blends. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Optically active poly(L ‐phenyllactic acid) (Ph‐PLLA), poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA), and poly(L ‐phenyllactic acid‐co‐L ‐lactic acid) with weight‐average molecular weight exceeding 6 × 103 g mol?1 were successfully synthesized by acid catalyzed direct polycondensation of L ‐phenyllactic acid and/or L ‐lactic acid in the presence of 2.5–10 wt % of p‐toluenesulfonic acid. Their physical properties and crystallization behavior were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, and polarimetry. The absolute value of specific optical rotation ([α]) for Ph‐PLLA (?38 deg dm?1 g?1 cm3) was much lower than that of [α] for PLLA (?150 deg dm?1 g?1 cm3), suggesting that the helical nature was reduced by incorporation of bulky phenyl group. PLLA was crystallizable during solvent evaporation, heating from room temperature, and cooling from the melt. Incorporation of a very low content of bulky phenyllactyl units even at 4 mol % suppressed the crystallization of L ‐lactyl unit sequences during heating and cooling, though the copolymers were crystallizable for L ‐phenylactyl units up to 6 mol % during solvent evaporation. The activation energy of thermal degradation (ΔEtd) for Ph‐PLLA (200 kJ mol?1) was higher than that for PLLA (158 kJ mol?1). The ΔEtd for the copolymers increased with an increase in L ‐phenyllactyl unit content. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐lactic acid) (MPELLA) was prepared by the melt polycondensation of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) and L ‐lactic acid. The structure and properties of MPELLA were characterized by IR, 1H‐NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. To estimate its feasibility as a vehicle for paclitaxel, MPELLA nanoparticles were prepared by a self‐emulsification/solvent evaporation method. The paclitaxel‐loaded nanoparticles (PMTs) showed a spherical morphology with an inner core and an outer shell. The size, size distribution, and loading capacity of PMTs were also measured. The release kinetics of paclitaxel from PMTs in vitro was studied. The results show that paclitaxel can be effectively incorporated into MPELLA nanoparticles, which provide a delivery system for paclitaxel and other hydrophobic or toxic compounds. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compared with linear diblock or triblock poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactic acid) copolymer (PEG‐b‐PLLA), star‐shaped PEG‐b‐PLLA (sPEG‐b‐PLLA) copolymers exhibit smaller hydrodynamic radius and lower viscosity and are expected to display peculiar morphologies, thermal properties, and degradation profiles. Compared with the synthesis routine of PEG‐b‐PLLA form lactide and PEG, the traditional synthesis routine from LA and PEG were suffered by the low reaction efficiency, low purity, lower molecular weight, and wide molecular weight distribution. In this article, multiarm sPEG‐b‐PLLA copolymer was prepared from multiarm sPEG and L ‐lactic acid (LLA using an improved method of melt polycondensation, in which two types of sPEG, that is, sPEG1 (four arm, Mn = 4300) and sPEG2 (three arm, Mn = 3200) were chosen as the core. It was found the molecular weight of sPEG‐b‐PLLA could be strongly affected by the purity of LLA and sPEGs, and the purification technology of vacuum dewater and vacuum distillation could help to remove most of the impurities in commercial available LLA. The polymers, including sPEG and sPEG‐b‐PLLA with varied core (sPEG1 and sPEG2) and LLA/sPEG feeding ratios, were characterized and confirmed by 1H‐NMR and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and gel permeation chromatography, which showed that the terminal hydroxyl group in each arm of sPEGs had reacted with LLA to form sPEG‐b‐PLLA copolymers with fairly narrow molecular weight distribution. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) is a good biomedical polymer material with wide applications. The addition of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a plasticizer and the formation of stereocomplex crystals (SCs) have been proved to be effective methods for improving the crystallization of PLLA, which will promote its heat resistance. In this work, the crystallization behavior of PEG and PLLA/poly(d ‐lactic acid) (PDLA) in PLLA/PDLA/PEG and PEG‐b‐PLLA/PEG‐b‐PDLA blends has been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. Both SCs and homocrystals (HCs) were observed in blends with asymmetric mass ratio of PLLA/PDLA, while exclusively SCs were observed in blends with approximately equal mass ratio of PLLA/PDLA. The crystallization of PEG was only observed for the symmetric blends of PLLA39k/PDLA35k/PEG2k, PLLA39k/PDLA35k/PEG5k, PLLA69k/PDLA96k/PEG5k and PEG‐b‐PLLA31k/PEG‐b‐PDLA27k, where the mass ratio of PLLA/PDLA was approximately 1/1. The results demonstrated that the formation of exclusively SCs would facilitate the crystallization of PEG, while the existence of both HCs and SCs could restrict the crystallization of PEG. The crystallization of PEG is related to the crystallinity of PLLA and PDLA, which will be promoted by the formation of SCs. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(L ‐lactide) diblock and triblock copolymers were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether or with poly(ethylene glycol) in the presence of stannous octoate. Molecular weight, thermal properties, and crystalline structure of block copolymers were analyzed by 1H‐NMR, FTIR, GPC, DSC, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The composition of the block copolymer was found to be comparable to those of the reactants. Each block of the PEG–PLLA copolymer was phase separated at room temperature, as determined by DSC and WAXD. For the asymmetric block copolymers, the crystallization of one block influenced much the crystalline structure of the other block that was chemically connected to it. Time‐resolved WAXD analyses also showed the crystallization of the PLLA block became retarded due to the presence of the PEG block. According to the biodegradability test using the activated sludge, PEG–PLLA block copolymer degraded much faster than PLLA homopolymers of the same molecular weight. © 1999 John Wiley amp; Sons, Inc. In this research work, biocomposites based on a ternary system containing softwood Kraft lignin (Indulin AT), poly‐L ‐lactic acid (PLLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) have been developed. Two binary systems based on PLLA/PEG and PLLA/lignin have also been studied to understand the role of plasticizer (i.e., PEG) and filler (i.e., lignin) on the overall physicomechanical behavior of PLLA. All samples have been prepared by melt‐blending. A novel approach has also been introduced to improve the compatibility between PLLA and PEG by using a transesterification catalyst under reactive‐mixing conditions. In PEG plasticized PLLA flexibility increases with increasing content of PEG and no significant effect of the molecular weight of PEG on the flexibility of PLLA has been observed. Differential scanning calorimetry and size‐exclusion chromatography along with FTIR analysis show the formation of PLLA‐b‐PEG copolymer for high temperature processed PLLA/PEG systems. On the other hand, binary systems containing lignin show higher stiffness than PLLA/PEG system and good adhesion between the particles and the matrix has been observed by scanning electron microscopy. However, a concomitant good balance in stiffness introduced by the lignin particles and flexibility introduced by PEG has been observed in the ternary systems. This study also showed that high temperature reactive melt‐blending of PLLA/PEG leads to the formation of a segmented PLLA‐b‐PEG block copolymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The nanohydroxyapatite/chitosan/poly(L ‐lactic acid) (HA/CS/PLLA) ternary biocomposites were prepared by blending the hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HA/CS) nanocomposites with poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) solution. Surface modification by grafting D ‐, L ‐lactic acid onto the HA/CS nanocomposites was designed to improve the bonding with PLLA. The FTIR and 13C‐NMR spectrum confirmed that the oligo(lactic acid) was successfully grafted onto the HA/CS nanocomposites, and the time‐dependent phase monitoring showed that the grafted copolymers were stable. The TEM morphology of the HA/CS/PLLA ternary nanocomposites showed that nano‐HA fibers were distributed homogeneously, compacted closely and wrapped tightly by the CS and PLLA matrix. The ternary biocomposites with the HA content of 60 and 67 wt % exhibited high compressive strength of about 160 MPa and suitable hydrophilicity. The in vitro tests exhibited that the ternary biocomposites have good biodegradability and bioactivity when immersed in SBF solutions. All the results suggested that the n‐HA/CS/PLLA ternary biocomposites are appropriate to application as bone substitute in bone tissue engineering. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Poly(L ‐lactic acid‐co‐succinic acid‐co‐1,4‐butanediol) (PLASB) was synthesized by a direct condensation copolymerization of L ‐lactic acid, succinic acid (SA), and 1,4‐butanediol (BD) in bulk state using titanium(IV) butoxide (TNBT) as a catalyst. Weight average molecular weight (Mw) of PLASB increased from 3.5 × 104 to 2.1 × 105 as the content of SA and BD went up from 0.01 to 0.5 mol/100 mol of L ‐lactic acid (LA). PLASB having Mw in the range from 1.8 × 105 to 2.1 × 105 showed tensile properties comparable to those of commercially available poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA). In sharp contrast, homopolymerization of LA in bulk state produced PLLA with Mw as low as 4.1 × 104, and it was too brittle to prepare specimens for the tensile tests. Mw of PLASB synthesized by using titanium(IV)‐2‐ethyl(hexoxide), indium acetate, indium hydroxide, antimony acetate, antimony trioxide, dibutyl tin oxide, and stannous‐2‐ethyl 1‐hexanoate was compared with that of PLASB obtained by TNBT. Ethylene glycol oligomers with different chain length were added to LA/SA in place of BD to investigate effect of chain length of ethylene glycol oligomers on the Mw of the resulting copolymers. Biodegradability of PLASB was analyzed by using the modified Sturm test. Toxicity of PLASB was evaluated by counting viable cell number of mouse fibroblast cells that had been in contact with PLASB discs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of end groups (2NH2) of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the miscibility and crystallization behaviors of binary crystalline blends of PEG/poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) were investigated. The results of conductivity meter and dielectric analyzer (DEA) implied the existence of ions, which could be explained by the amine groups of PEG gaining the protons from the carboxylic acid groups of PLLA. The miscibility of PEG(2NH2)/PLLA blends was the best because of the ionic interaction as compared with PEG(2OH, 1OH‐1CH3, and 2CH3)/PLLA blends. Since the ionic interaction formed only at the chain ends of PEG(2NH2) and PLLA, unlike hydrogen bonds forming at various sites along the chains in the other PEG/PLLA blend systems, the folding of PLLA blended with PEG(2NH2) was affected in a different manner. Thus the fold surface free energy played an important role on the crystallization rate of PLLA for the PEG(2NH2)/PLLA blend system. PLLA had the least fold surface free energy and the fast crystallization rate in the PEG(2NH2)/PLLA blend system, among all the PEG/PLLA systems studied. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly (butylene terephthalate‐co‐adipate) (PBTA) were prepared at ratios of 50 : 50, 60 : 40, and 80 : 20 by melt blending in a Laboplastomill. Improved mechanical properties were observed in PLLA when it was blended with PBTA, a biodegradable flexible polymer. Irradiation of these blends with an electron beam (EB) in the presence of triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC), a polyfunctional monomer, did not cause any significant improvement in the mechanical properties, although the gel fraction increased with the TAIC level and dose level. Irradiation of the blends without TAIC led to a reduction in the elongation at break (Eb) but did not show a significant effect on the tensile strength. Eb of PBTA was unaffected by EB radiation in the absence of TAIC. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Crystalline dicarboxylated poly(L ‐lactic acid)s (dcPLLAs) with number‐average molecular weights (Mn's) of 103 to 104 g/mol were synthesized via the melt polycondensation of L ‐lactic acid (LLA) in the presence of succinic anhydride (SAD), with tin(II) chloride and toluene‐4‐sulfonic acid as binary catalysts. They were characterized by end‐group titration, 1H‐NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The terminal COOH percentage reached over 98%, and the molecular weight could be controlled by the molar ratio of LLA to SAD. The thermal behaviors depended on the molecular weight. The poly(L ‐lactic acid)s (PLLAs) crystallized slowly for Mn ≤ 2000 but quickly for Mn ≥ 4000. The crystallinity increased from 27 to 40% when Mn grew from 4000 to 10,000. With comparison to ordinary PLLA, the dcPLLA had the same crystallization structure but a slightly lower crystallizability. The glass‐transition temperature was clearly higher than that of amorphous dcPLLAs. With a controllable molecular weight, high COOH percentage, and crystallinity, the dcPLLA with Mn ≥ 4000 appeared to be a suitable prepolymer for the preparation of high‐molecular‐weight crystalline PLLA via chain extension. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
