Interview with Anni Bergman.

Anni Bergman is among a cadre of child analysts who entered into the field after many years of educational work with children. Before her training in child therapy, she taught music, directed a school orchestra, and co-authored a book on how to teach very young children to play the recorder. Her psychoanalytic work, spanning more than two decades, considers abnormal processes within the context of typical developmental patterns. Karen Roser (KR), a doctoral candidate and beginning student of psychoanalysis, interviewed her former teacher of play therapy and supervisor at the City University Child Center to gather insights into the past and present of child analytic work and some intimate details of her association with Margaret Mahler. Recent evidence suggests that the human interferon-inducible double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase may function as a tumor suppressor. Here we describe the mapping of the gene for this kinase to chromosome region 2p21-22 by fluorescence in situ hybridization. A combined analysis of cytogenetic data from a series of 341 patients with hematologic disorders that exhibited cytogenetic abnormalities and from published reports indicates that abnormalities involving 2p21-22 occur nonrandomly and are observed among patients with acute myelogenous leukemia, raising the possibility of a role for this protein kinase in leukemogenesis.

The application of Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality to the dialogue between students and faculty regarding nursing education and practice provides the theoretical framework for evaluating a transcultural nursing curriculum in a transcultural, transnational setting on the Texas-Mexico border. In evaluating the first semester of this cultural encounter between the nurse-patient-community system and baccalaureate nursing education, faculty and students at Texas A&M International University School of Nursing in Laredo identified some particular challenges and assessed the effectiveness of approaches to meeting these challenges within the context of Leininger's Culture Care Theory and its three modes of action: culture care preservation, accommodation, and repatterning.     

Interview with Representative Cecil Heftel.

Heftel discusses (a) reasons for spiraling health care costs; (b) why cost-saving alternatives such as nonphysician practitioners (e.g., psychologists) have been excluded from Medicare coverage; (c) the Heftel and Inouye bill providing Medicare coverage of psychologists' services in health maintenance organizations; (d) the need to increase in general Medicare coverage of mental services for the elderly; (e) the high incidence of mental illness in the elderly; (f) lower usage of mental health services among the elderly compared to younger groups; (g) mental health services in Hawaii; (h) the issue of psychologists as independent practitioners within Medicare; (i) involvement of psychologists in political advocacy; and (j) use of media by behavioral sciences to promote their concerns. Two hundred and fifteen patients with pulmonary involvement of lobar (regional, segmental) extent were examined. The examination procedure included clinical and laboratory tests, X-ray tomographic study, and computed tomography, bronchoscopy with biopsy, cyto- and histological studies. The nosological diagnosis was established in 96.5% of cases. Differential diagnosis was found to be difficult in 3.5% of cases.
