Experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of hermetic triple bagging using Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags for storage of Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.). One set of experiments used grain heavily infested by Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) while a second set began with a low level infestation. Each experiment consisted of V. subterranea grain kept in four replicate 50 kg PICS bags or two replicate woven bags as controls. Two to five days after the beginning of the experiments, oxygen level inside the bags averaged about 21% (v/v) in the controls but decreased significantly in PICS bags, reaching 10% (v/v) with the heavily infested grain but falling only slightly in the lightly infested grain. After 7 months of storage, (i) the number of C. maculatus adults found between and within the grains, (ii) the 100 seed weight, (iii) the number of seed with holes, and (iv) the percentage germination of grain stored in PICS bags did not differ from what had been measured on the day that the experiment was set up. In woven bags, by contrast, there was a massive increase in C. maculatus numbers with means of 309 and 251 adults per 500 g in heavily and lightly infested grain, respectively. Grain weight losses in the woven bag controls ranged from 8 to 19% and the percentage of C. maculatus emergence holes per 100 seed increased from 51 to 135%.  相似文献

Hermetic storage containers are often used by farmers to protect their harvested grain from insect damage and ultimately stop insect population development. Sometimes holes in a storage container are created by insects or by accident; such holes may reduce the effectiveness of the hermetic storage unit. Using cowpea grain and the cowpea bruchid, Callosobruchus maculatus (F), we investigated the degree to which holes in a hermetic storage container wall affect the level of grain damage. When there were low numbers of holes, seed damage increased markedly with each additional hole. The grain itself contributed a barrier to oxygen diffusion through the grain mass. If holes in the container wall were patched with a single layer of HDPE film, grain damage was indistinguishable from that seen under full hermetic conditions. We provide evidence that a single layer of woven polypropylene contributes a small but measurable barrier to oxygen penetration into the container.  相似文献

Trials of the Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bag technology for the storage of paddy rice, Oryza sativa L., were conducted in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Niger. Paddy rice naturally infested with insects, the most abundant species being Tribolium spp. and Rhizopertha dominica, was sealed in triple layer PICS bags, or in conventional woven polypropylene sacks. At the end of 7–18 months of storage in PICS bags the number of insects did not increase, the weight of 100 seeds did not change, and the proportion of damaged seeds was not different from that present when the paddy was first put into the bags. By contrast, paddy stored in the conventional way in woven polypropylene bags exhibited weight losses ranging from 3 to 8.7%. In Bolgatanga, Ghana, where paddy was stored for 18 months, germination of paddy kept in the PICS bags was comparable to that present at the beginning of the experiment. PICS bags can be used for the safe, low-cost, insecticide free storage of paddy rice.  相似文献

Naturally infested paddy rice was used to compare the effectiveness of polypropylene bags and hermetic storage containers over 12 months of storage in a warehouse. Insect pest identification as well as the infestation level, percentage of damaged grain, weight loss, and moisture content were evaluated. Five insect species associated with stored rice were identified during the storage period, namely lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica), red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum), rice/maize weevil (Sitophilus spp.), angoumois grain moth (Sitotroga cerealella) and flat grain beetle (Cryptolestes ferrugineus). The lesser grain borer was the most predominant species with an average incidence above 70% after twelve months of storage, followed by the rice/maize weevil with an incidence of 17%. When compared to hermetic storage containers, polypropylene bag showed the highest mean infestation level with 233.3 individuals/kg after six months of storage, representing about 8-fold of the number of insects recorded in hermetic containers after six months of storage. In polypropylene container, the percentage of damaged grain and weight loss increased significantly achieving a maximum of 6.98% and 5.56% respectively, whereas using hermetic containers the highest percentage of damaged grain reached was 3.24% in polyethylene drum and the weight loss was 1.62% in GrainSafe bag. The results from the study show that the use of hermetic storage containers is a green alternative for safe storage of paddy rice, for 12 months without application of pesticides, bringing multiple advantages for smallholder farmers, lever food security and income generation for smallholder farmers and rice milling companies.  相似文献

Seeds of mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek) are subject to loss of viability due to aging and damage from pulse beetles (or bruchids; Callosobruchus spp.) infestation during storage. We investigated whether seed drying using desiccants and hermetic packaging would prevent or ameliorate these consequences of storage. Sun-dried mung bean seeds at a moisture content of 10% were subjected to further drying for 72 h using five different desiccants: Drying Beads® (a zeolite-based desiccant), silica gel, sodium aluminum silicate, activated alumina, and cow-dung ash (a traditional desiccant). Seeds were subsequently stored in hermetic plastic containers in the presence of these desiccants under ambient conditions along with sun-dried seeds stored in cloth bags or in hermetic containers. In addition, parallel samples of each treatment were inoculated with one pair of bruchid beetles (C. chinensis L.) and stored under the same conditions. The seed drying treatments did not affect initial seed quality (germination percentage and seedling vigor) significantly. After storage for 9 months at ambient temperatures, seeds dried using Drying Beads, silica gel, sodium aluminum silicate and activated alumina had higher germination percentages, seedling vigor indices and soil emergence, and lower electrical conductivity (leakage upon imbibition) and fungal infestation compared to other conditions. In addition, the mung bean seeds inoculated with bruchids and stored with these effective desiccants had less damage, oviposition, and insect respiratory activity in the hermetic containers and maintained higher seed germination and seedling vigor after six months of storage compared to other treatments and controls. The results demonstrate the superior ability of desiccants to quickly and safely dry seeds prior to and during storage and the benefits of such drying and hermetic storage conditions for preventing seed deterioration and insect damage during storage.  相似文献

The khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium (Everts), is a highly destructive stored product insect that presents a significant threat to stored bagged grain. Hermetic packaging is designed to maintain the quality and safety of stored grain, while continually protecting the grain from insect infestations during storage. The objective of this research was to evaluate a prototype deltamethrin, all-in-one treated hermetic bag on contact efficacy, larval mobility, and the control of T. granarium in artificially infested wheat. The insecticidal activity of the deltamethrin-treated packaging was tested against larvae and adults of T. granarium through contact bioassays. There was a significant reduction in responsive adults after 5 day and >86% of larvae were unresponsive after 9 d of exposure on the treated bag. Trogoderma granarium movement toward a food bait was <10% after a 24 h exposure on the treated bag compared to ~45% of larvae on untreated bag. Lots of 15 kg of wheat were artificially infested with 100 T. granarium larvae and placed inside treated and untreated storage bags, sealed, and stored in a semi-field warehouse, and observed after 2, 6, and 8-weeks for T. granarium survival and grain quality attributes. The weight and number of insect damaged kernels was lower across all storage intervals for grain held in the treated bags, as compared with control bags. Live adult T. granarium were observed at 2-weeks in treated and untreated bags, but there were no live adults observed after 8-weeks of storage in both bags. The new prototype hermetic bags maintained positive grain qualities, however more information on the hermetic parameters are needed to understand how some individuals survived.  相似文献

Dry mung bean and pigeonpea grains that had sustained some insect damage but fumigated before the start of the experiment were stored in triple-layer hermetic bags (Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS™ bags) or woven polypropylene (PP) bags for 6 months. Some of the bags were artificially infested with cowpea bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (PICS1, PP1) while others were not (PICS0, PP0). In an additional trial, PP bags containing the grains were treated with Actellic Super® dust before being artificially infested (PP1Ac). Moisture content, live adult C. maculatus count, grain damage, weight loss, and seed germination were determined on a monthly basis. At six months, moisture contents of grain stored in PICS and PP bags remained below 12%. Storage in PICS bags halted multiplication of C. maculatus, and the initial damage level and weight of grains did not change. Conversely, in the PP bags, C. maculatus populations increased massively and seed damage reached 71.8 ± 1.9%, 76.9 ± 0.4%, and 60.3 ± 0.6% corresponding to weight losses of 14.5 ± 0.1%, 16.5 ± 0.2% and 12.5 ± 0.1% in PP0, PP1 and PP1Ac, respectively, in mung beans. With the pigeonpeas, seed damage reached 55.1 ± 0.6%, 95.7 ± 0.4% and 75.8 ± 0.9%, corresponding to weight losses of 13.0% ± 0.3%, 26.2 ± 0.2% and 13.5 ± 0.1%, in PP0, PP1 and PP1Ac, respectively. PICS bags are an effective tool for preserving mung beans and pigeonpeas against C. maculatus attack, and their performance is superior to that of Actellic Super® dust.  相似文献

Frequency spectra and timing patterns of brief, 1–10 ms broadband sound impulses produced by movement and feeding activities of Prostephanus truncatus and Sitophilus zeamais last instars and adults in maize were investigated to find spectral and temporal pattern information useful for distinguishing among these species and stages. The impulse spectra were categorized into five different types of frequency patterns (profiles), designated Broadband, HighF, MidF1, MidF2 and LowF to indicate differences in their peak energies and broadness of frequency range. Groups (trains) of three or more closely spaced impulses, termed bursts, were observed to occur frequently in all recordings, as has been reported for sounds produced by other insects. Mean rates of bursts, mean counts of impulses per burst, and mean rates of impulses in bursts were calculated and compared among the two species and stages. The counts of broadband and MidF2 impulses per burst and the rates of broadband and MidF2 impulses in bursts were significantly different for adult than for 4th instar S. zeamais and either stage of P. truncatus. These findings can be useful in developing an acoustic sensor system for automated detection of hidden insects including P. truncatus and S. zeamais in bulk storage warehouses. The findings are discussed in relation to different movement and feeding behavior patterns that have been identified in these important pests.  相似文献

Present study envisages the potential of triple layer bags for reducing pulse beetle infestation under laboratory conditions over six months of storage. It was observed that when chickpea grain was stored in jute bags with bruchid infestation, the germination percentage decreased significantly from 84.67 to 18.67% in six months of storage. But, the grain stored in jute bags without infestation the germination percentage decreased from 92.00 to 73.33% only. On the other hand, grains stored in triple layer bags with bruchid infestation, the germination percentage merely decreased from 86.00 to 78.33% in six months of storage and triple layer bags without infestation the germination percentage only decreased from 91.67 to 90.67%. The per cent grain damage over a period of six months storage also increased significantly from 14.54 to 70.67% and 0.00–26.45% in jute bag with bruchid infestation and jute bag without infestation, respectively. However, per cent grain damage in triple layer bags with bruchid infestation increased only from 15.15 to 25.70% and triple layer bags without bruchid infestation showed negligible increase from 0.00 to 2.64% grain damage in six months of storage. The corresponding per cent weight loss of infested grain was increased significantly from 8.51 to 55.67% in six months of storage in jute bag with bruchid infestation and from 0.00 to 15.08% in jute bag without infestation. Whereas, per cent weight loss of infested grain in triple layer bags with bruchid infestation increased only from 7.83 to 15.70 in six months of storage and triple layer bags without bruchid infestation recorded a mere per cent increase in weight loss from 0.00 to 1.48%. Benefit cost ratio showed that grains stored in triple layer bags for 6 months has highest benefit cost ratio (1.23) compared to jute bag storage (0.39).  相似文献

Under laboratory experimental condition female Adzuki bean beetles, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) are known to evenly distribute their eggs over grains available for egg laying. However, currently there are no data on pattern of egg distribution by Adzuki bean beetle in large quantity of chickpea grain stored for extended period of time. The objective of this study was to determine the number and distribution of eggs among grains of chickpea stored in large quantity for 8 months and subjected to natural infestations. The experiment was conducted under room temperature and relative humidity at Debre Zeit Agricultural Research Center. The chickpea cultivars used were Natoli (desi type, 22 g per 100 seeds with Tuberculated seed coat texture) and Arerti (kabuli type, 26 g per 100 seeds with smooth seed coat texture) and for each cultivar there were 21 replicas of bags (40 cm wide and 70 cm high). From each bag, which contains 10 kg each, 25 chickpea grain samples were randomly selected at monthly intervals and examined for the presence or absence of Adzuki bean beetle eggs. Grains with eggs were categorized into frequency classes (i.e. 0, 1, 2, …, n) based on the number of eggs present on them. The variance to mean ratio was used to decide the type of egg dispersion pattern. In all the sampling dates and on both cultivars, the variance to mean ratios were highly significantly greater than one indicating that egg distribution by female Adzuki bean beetles on grains of chickpea was aggregated type. Moreover, further analysis of data had shown that the egg distribution pattern perfectly fits the negative binomial distribution, which confirms that the pattern of egg distribution on chickpea grains was aggregated/clumped type.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:  The objectives of this study were to assess and improve the quality of the hibiscus calyces from Senegal over 2 production seasons (2004 to 2005), to develop and adapt new procedures for the determination of hibiscus anthocyanins and analysis of the 2 major ones, delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside. The foreign matter, total ashes, and acid insoluble ashes showed that the calyces harvested in 2005 were produced following hygienic practices, while the color assessment of the calyces and analysis of hibiscus active principles also showed higher amounts of anthocyanins in 2005. A protocol to measure anthocyanins by pH-differential UV-Vis spectrophotometry was adapted to measure the hibiscus anthocyanins from a water extract. The spectrophotometric method for quantitation of total anthocyanins showed a close correlation ( r 2= 0.82) when compared with the HPLC method, suggesting the use of the colorimetric method in quality control programs as an affordable alternative method to assess anthocyanin content in hibiscus. New and raised standards for the cleanliness and active principle content in hibiscus are also proposed. This study demonstrated that the implementation of a quality control program and the application of agricultural good practices in the production and processing of hibiscus calyces can lead to higher quality natural plant products.  相似文献

Shire Valley is one of Malawi's most vulnerable areas to climate change (CC). In addition to other impacts, CC is expected to affect storage insect pest status, and the efficacy of grain storage facilities and protectants. On-farm grain storage trials were therefore conducted in Shire Valley to assess the performance of storage facilities and grain protectants against storage insect pests. Eight smallholder farmers hosted the trials in Thyolo and Chikwawa districts. Seven grain storage treatments were evaluated for 32 weeks during two storage seasons: Neem leaf powder (NM), Actellic Super dust (ASD), ZeroFly® bag (ZFB), Purdue Improved Crop Storage bag (PICS), Super Grain Bag (SGB), hermetic metal silo (MS) and untreated grain in a polypropylene bag (PP). Insect pest populations and grain damage increased with storage duration and differed significantly between treatments (p < 0.05). Grain stored in hermetic bags (PICS, SGB) sustained significantly lower (p < 0.05) insect damage and weight loss compared to other treatments across sites and seasons. The hermetic bags also outperformed the other treatments in suppressing insect numbers. However, germination rates of undamaged grains stored in the hermetic storage facilities (MS, PICS, SGB) for 40 weeks were extremely low (<15%) compared to that of undamaged grains from NM treatment (53–58%) and the other treatments (>75%) at both sites. The hermetic MS, ZFB bags, ASD and NM treatments did not effectively protect grain from insect damage. High in-store mean temperature (35.6 °C) and high initial grain moisture content (13.7%) may have negatively affected efficacy of some treatments and seed germination. Tribolium castaneum survival in the MS requires further investigation. The hermetic storage bags (PICS, SGB) can be recommended for long-term maize grain storage (≥32 weeks) by smallholder farmers in Shire Valley and other similar climate change-prone areas in sub-Saharan Africa.  相似文献

Storing cowpeas, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walpers, with ash to protect them against Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) is a traditional storage method in northern Cameroon. The amount of ash used and the details of the methodology (i.e. mixing vs layering, the source of ash used) varies among farmers. In experiments designed to simulate traditional ash-storage procedures, it was found that a minimum ratio of 3 parts of ash to 4 parts of cowpeas prevented population growth of C. maculatus and that a 3 cm layer of ash on top of stored seeds prevented infestation by adults.  相似文献

A trial was set up in northern Benin to evaluate the potential of Teretrius nigrescens to reduce the infestation and damage to cassava chips caused by storage insects. Cassava chips were stored for 5 months in mud silos and 50 adults of T. nigrescens were added when the stores were first filled. Stores where no predator was released were monitored as controls. The main storage insects observed were Prostephanus truncatus and Dinoderus spp. Initial chip weight varied between 102 and 246 g with no difference between treatments. Chip weight and number of holes on chips initially differed between treatments after 2 months of storage. After 3 months of storage, losses reached 40-50% without T. nigrescens and 30-40% when cassava chips were stored with T. nigrescens. A farmer can increase his profit by 1437 Fcfa/100 kg (1$=560 Fcfa, 1£=968 Fcfa; 1€=656 Fcfa, as on 2 December 2005) through the use of T. nigrescens because losses are reduced by 11%. Data analysis showed that there were significant differences (P<0.0001) between the two treatments for the number of holes, number of insects, weight of each chip as well as damage. There were twice as many P. truncatus and holes on chips in stores where T. nigrescens was not released. The addition of the predator to farmers’ stores is an economic option for controlling losses due to insects in cassava chips.  相似文献

The degradation kinetics of anthocyanins in a Roselle infusion (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), as assessed by visible absorption spectroscopy (absorbance at 520 nm), was verified (60–100 °C). The rate constants for absorbance retention were obtained from first-order reaction kinetic plots. Based on an Arrhenius-type model, the experimental data showed an energy of activation of 15.83 kcal mol−1 (66.22 kJ mol−1) and a Q10 value of 1.01. The obtained pattern allows to predict the retention of these antioxidant compounds as a function of temperature and time of thermal treatment.  相似文献

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a destructive pest of cowpea grains in the field and storage. Effects of two chemical fertilizers (triple superphosphate (TSP) and urea) and three bio-fertilizers (Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Pseudomonas putida and mycorrhizal fungi) compared to control were studied on resistance of cowpea pod and grain to C. maculatus. Pod resistance was evaluated as oviposition preference, egg-to-adult survival and developmental time, and grain resistance was measured as life history and life table parameters of the pest. Cowpea plants treated with tested fertilizers were grown under field condition. Then, the full-size green pods and their immature grains were harvested and used in the experiments. The highest oviposition preference and percentage of adults emergence were on control (untreated) pods as compared to treated ones. The longest developmental times were recorded on the pods obtained from TSP and B. japonicum treatments. In most cases, significant differences were observed for the life history and life table parameters of C. maculatus on the grains treated with examined fertilizers. Delayed developmental time was recorded when C. maculatus was fed with P. putida- and B. japonicum-treated grains. The highest and lowest number of eggs laid by each female (fecundity) was on the grains obtained from TSP and control treatments, respectively. The net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm) and finite rate of increase (λ) were the lowest on cowpea grains fertilized with B. japonicum and highest on the grains treated with urea. Our results showed that B. japonicum can be suggested to utilize, as an alternative for chemical fertilizers, to minimize cowpea infestation by C. maculatus. These findings could be helpful in developing integrated management of the pest on cowpea.  相似文献

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is one of the most important storage pests of legume seeds. The effect of various legume species including chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) (cultivars Hashem and Mansour), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) (cultivars Mashhad and 1057), green gram (Vigna radiata L.) (cultivar Parto), lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) (cultivar Bilehsavar) was studied on the life history and life table parameters of C. maculatus at 30 ± 1 °C, relative humidity of 65 ± 5% and complete darkness. The developmental time was longest on lentil and shortest on cowpea 1057. The fecundity (number of eggs laid per reproductive period) of the pest was the lowest on lentil. The longest oviposition period was observed on chickpea Hashem. The gross and net reproductive rates were the highest on chickpea Mansour and lowest on lentil. The intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were the lowest when C. maculatus was reared on lentil and highest when it was reared on other hosts. The longest and shortest mean generation times were observed on lentil and cowpea 1057, respectively. According to the obtained results, lentil was relatively resistant and the other tested legumes were more susceptible hosts for feeding and population increase of C. maculatus. It is concluded that the resistant host cultivar can be proposed to be incorporated into breeding programs to minimize the economic losses incurred by C. maculatus.  相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate species diversity and relative abundance of Callosobruchus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a major insect pest infesting stored cowpea in the central region of Ghana. Cowpea stocks from Burkina Faso, Ejura, Ghana and Niger were obtained from the markets, and held to collect adults emerging from the cowpeas. Adult Callosobruchus spp. were identified based on the pattern of their hind femora and elytra. Five species, Callosobruchus maculatus, Callosobruchus rhodesianus, Callosobruchus chinensis Callosobruchus analis and Callosobruchus subinnotatus, were identified, with C. maculatus being the most abundant.  相似文献

Inside a Central Greece storeroom containing 80 metric tons of barley, 10 unbaited probe traps were placed at a depth of 80 cm from January 1997 to January 1998. The traps were inspected every 20 days. Additionally, during the same period, samples were taken every 20 days using a non-partitioned grain trier. More adults were found in the traps than in the grain trier, especially during the warm months. Twenty-one species were found. Cryptolestes ferrugineus, Alphitobius diaperinus, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Ahasverus advena, Tribolium castaneum and Rhyzopertha dominica were the most abundant species in the traps, whereas Sitophius oryzae and Oryzaephilus surinamensis were the most abundant in the grain trier samples. Probe traps were more sensitive in detection of adults, with the exception of S. oryzae and S. granarius. Iwao’s regression analysis indicated repulsion among individuals in both techniques. Furthermore, all species (except for C. ferrugineus in grain trier samples) showed an aggregated distribution among sampling units. For Iwao’s model, the greatest r2 values were those for the species C. ferrugineus and A. diaperinus in the traps, while the values for the same species in the grain trier samples were the lowest.  相似文献
