Exergy or the available energy is based on the second law of thermodynamics and goes back to Maxwell and Gibbs. It is the exergy content and not the energy content, that truly represents the potential of the substance to cause change. Exergy is the only rational basis for evaluating the system performance. The aim of this project is to study in detail the exergy variation in the solar assisted absorption system. The influence of the cycle parameters are analysed on the basis of first law and second law effectiveness and the results indicated various ways of improving system performance by better design. Also a better quality of the evaporator has more effect on the system performance than the better quality of other components. It was shown that second law analysis quantitatively visualizes losses within a system and gives clear trends for optimization.  相似文献

Exergetic life cycle assessment (ExLCA) is applied with life cycle assessment (LCA) to a hydrogen production process. This comparative environmental study examines a nuclear-based hydrogen production via thermochemical water splitting using a copper–chlorine cycle. LCA, which is an analytical tool to identify, quantify and decrease the overall environmental impact of a system or a product, is extended to ExLCA. Exergy efficiencies and air pollution emissions are evaluated for all process steps, including the uranium processing, nuclear and hydrogen production plants. LCA results are presented in four categories: acidification potential, eutrophication potential, global warming potential and ozone depletion potential. A parametric study is performed for various plant lifetimes. The ExLCA results indicate that the greatest irreversibility is caused by uranium processing. The primary contributor of the life cycle irreversibility of the nuclear-based hydrogen production process is fuel (uranium) processing, for which the exergy efficiency is 26.7% and the exergy destruction is 2916.3 MJ. The lowest global warming potential per megajoule exergy of hydrogen is 5.65 g CO2-eq achieved a plant capacity of 125,000 kg H2/day. The corresponding value for a plant capacity of 62,500 kg H2/day is 5.75 g CO2-eq.  相似文献

This study investigates the simulation of a proposed small-scale laboratory liquid hydrogen plant with a new, innovative multi-component refrigerant (MR) refrigeration system. The simulated test rig was capable of liquefying a feed of 2 kg/h of normal hydrogen gas at 21 bar and 25 °C to normal liquid hydrogen at 2 bar and −250 °C. The simulated power consumption for pre-cooling the hydrogen from 25 °C to −198 °C with this new MR cycle was 2.07 kWh/kgGH2 from the ideal minimum of 0.7755 kWh per kilogram of feed hydrogen gas. This was the lowest power consumption available when compared to today’s conventional hydrogen liquefaction cycles, which are approximately 4.00 kWh/kgGH2. Hence, the MR cycle’s exergy efficiency was 38.3%. Exergy analysis of the test rig’s cycle, which is required to find the losses and optimize the proposed MR system, was evaluated for each component using the simulation data. It was found that the majority of the losses were from the compressors, heat exchangers, and expansion valves. Suggestions are provided for how to reduce exergy in each component in order to reduce the exergy loss. Finally, further improvements for better efficiency of the test rig are explained to assist in the design of a future large-scale hydrogen liquefaction plant.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to present exergy charts for carbon dioxide (CO2) based on the new fundamental equation of state and the results of a thermodynamic analysis of conventional and trans-critical vapour compression refrigeration cycles using the data thereof. The calculation scheme is anchored on the Mathematica platform. There exist upper and lower bounds for the high cycle pressure for a given set of evaporating and pre-throttling temperatures. The maximum possible exergetic efficiency for each case was determined. Empirical correlations for exergetic efficiency and COP, valid in the range of temperatures studied here, are obtained. The exergy losses have been quantified.  相似文献

Integration of the heat pipe with an ejector will result in a compact and high performance system. The concept of the heat pipe/ejector refrigeration cycle is discussed, in this paper. The needed driving capillary forces are firmly established. The basic characteristics of the system, such as entrainment ratio, coefficient of performance, exergy efficiency and thermal efficiency of the system are evaluated. Also, the zero-dimensional constant pressure mixing theory is applied to ejector. In this study, water is used as the working fluid. Whenever the mixed flow is supersonic, a normal shockwave is assumed to occur upstream of diffuser inlet. The simulation results indicate that, the coefficient of performance can reach about 0.30 at Te = 10 °C, Tc = 30 °C and Tg = 100 °C. Also, the second law efficiency of the heat pipe/ejector refrigeration cycle increases with increasing evaporator temperature and decreasing condenser temperature. It is seen that, the maximum heat pipe cooling capacity obtains for large heat pipe diameters, near the small heat pipe lengths. It has proven that, this refrigeration system can be widely used in many areas, especially in renewable energy utilization such as solar energy.  相似文献

Hydrogen is a sustainable fuel option and one of the potential solutions for the current energy and environmental problems. Its eco-friendly production is really crucial for better environment and sustainable development. In this paper, various types of hydrogen production methods namely solar thermal (high temperature and low temperature), photovoltaic, photoelecrtolysis, biophotolysis etc are discussed. A brief study of various hydrogen production processes have been carried out. Various solar-based hydrogen production processes are assessed and compared for their merits and demerits in terms of exergy efficiency and sustainability factor. For a case study the exergy efficiency of hydrogen production process and the hydrogen system is discussed in terms of sustainability.  相似文献

Exergy analysis is used as a tool to analyse the performance of an ejector refrigeration cycle driven by solar energy. The analysis is based on the following conditions: a solar radiation of 700 W/m2, an evaporator temperature of 10 °C, a cooling capacity of 5 kW, butane as the refrigerant in the refrigeration cycle and ambient temperature of 30 °C as the reference temperature. Irreversibilities occur among components and depend on the operating temperatures. The most significant losses in the system are in the solar collector and the ejector. The latter decreases inversely proportional to the evaporation temperature and dominates the total losses within the system. The optimum generating temperature for a specific evaporation temperature is obtained when the total losses in the system are minimized. For the above operating conditions, the optimum generating temperature is about 80 °C.  相似文献

This study examines the exergetic sustainability effect of PEM electrolyzer (PEME) integrated high pressure hydrogen gas storage system whose capacity is 3 kg/h. For this purpose, the indicators, previously used in the literature, are taken into account and their variations are parametrically studied as a function of the PEME operating pressure and storage pressure by considering i) PEME operating temperature at 70 °C, ii) PEME operating pressures at 10, 30, 50 and 100 bar, iii) hydrogen gas flow rate at 3 kg/h and iv) storage pressure between 200 and 900 bar. Consequently, the results from the parametric investigation indicate that, with the ascent of storage pressure from 200 to 900 bar at a constant PEME operating pressure (=50 bar), exergetic efficiency changes decreasingly between 0.612 and 0.607 while exergetic sustainability between 1.575 and 1.545. However, it is estimated that waste exergy ratio changes increasingly between 0.388 and 0.393 while environmental effect factor between 0.635 and 0.647. Additionally, it is said that the higher PEME outlet pressure causes the higher exergetic sustainability index, the lower environmental effect factor, the lower waste exergy output, the higher exergetic efficiency. However, the higher storage pressure causes the lower exergetic efficiency, the higher waste exergy output, the higher environmental effect factor and the lower exergetic sustainability index. Thus, it is recommended that this type of the system should be operated at higher PEME outlet pressure, and at an optimum hydrogen storage pressure.  相似文献

Splitting the exergy destruction into endogenous/exogenous and unavoidable/avoidable parts has many advantages for the detailed analysis of energy conversion systems. Endogenous is the exergy destruction obtained when all other system components are ideal and the component being considered operates with its real efficiency. The difference between total and endogenous exergy destruction is the exogenous exergy destruction caused within the component being considered by the irreversibilities in the remaining components and the structure of the overall system. Unavoidable is the part of exergy destruction within one system component that cannot be eliminated even if the best available technology in the near future would be applied. The avoidable exergy destruction is the difference between total and unavoidable exergy destruction. These concepts enhance an exergy analysis and assist in improving the quality of the conclusions obtained from this analysis. The paper presents the combined application of both concepts to vapor-compression refrigeration machines using different one-component working fluids (R125, R134a, R22 and R717) as well as azeotropic (R500) and zeotropic (R407C) mixtures. The purpose of the paper is not to evaluate these working fluids, some of which cannot be used in future, but to demonstrate the effect of different material properties on the results of advanced exergy analysis.  相似文献

The concept of exergy has been introduced to establish a universal standard for quality and efficient use of energy. In this work, applications of this concept to compression, heat exchange, and separation processes, in addition to the computation of their irreversibility rate and thermodynamic efficiency, are considered. An industrial case study on the purification of 1,2-ethylenedichloride (EDC) in a high-purity distillation column is presented. Due to its large throughput, this distillation column consumes a large amount of thermal energy (steam to the reboiler) and in order to reduce the energy requirements without large process modifications, a new configuration using a vapour compression heat pump is proposed which yields considerable improvement in the use of energy. Both configurations were implemented using the commercial simulator Aspen Plus™; the results of the original configuration were validated with data extracted from the plant. The objective of this work was to compare the original configuration and the new proposed one, from a thermodynamic approach. Furthermore, two forms of process thermodynamic analysis based on the concept of exergy were applied to the new proposed configuration.  相似文献

Life cycle assessment is extended to exergetic life cycle assessment and used to evaluate the exergy efficiency, economic effectiveness and environmental impact of producing hydrogen using wind and solar energy in place of fossil fuels. The product hydrogen is considered a fuel for fuel cell vehicles and a substitute for gasoline. Fossil fuel technologies for producing hydrogen from natural gas and gasoline from crude oil are contrasted with options using renewable energy.  相似文献

In this study, the first and the second law of thermodynamics are used to analyze the performance of a single-stage water-lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system (ARS) when some working parameters are varied. A mathematical model based on the exergy method is introduced to evaluate the system performance, exergy loss of each component and total exergy loss of all the system components. Parameters connected with performance of the cycle–circulation ratio (CR), coefficient of performance (COP), Carnot coefficient of performance (COPc), exergetic efficiency (ξ) and efficiency ratio (τ)–are calculated from the thermodynamic properties of the working fluids at various operating conditions. Using the developed model, the effect of main system temperatures on the performance parameters of the system, irreversibilities in the thermal process and non-dimensional exergy loss of each component are analyzed in detail. The results show that the performance of the ARS increases with increasing generator and evaporator temperatures, but decreases with increasing condenser and absorber temperatures. Exergy losses in the expansion valves, pump and heat exchangers, especially refrigerant heat exchanger, are small compared to other components. The highest exergy loss occurs in the generator regardless of operating conditions, which therefore makes the generator the most important component of the cycle.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper has been to carry out an exergetic analysis of an innovative natural gas (NG) combined cycle cogeneration system (150-kWe, 192-kWt). The combined cycle is composed of a reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), which is used as the topping cycle, and a water Rankine cycle (RC), which operates on the exhaust gases from the ICE, as the bottoming cycle.  相似文献

In this paper, thermoeconomic optimization and exergy analysis are applied to a CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration cycle. Cooling capacity, ambient temperature and cold space temperature are constraints of the optimization procedure. Four parameters including condensing temperature of ammonia, evaporating temperature of carbon dioxide, condensing temperature of carbon dioxide and temperature difference in the cascade condenser are chosen as decision variables. The objective function is the total annual cost of the system which includes costs of input exergy to the system and annualized capital cost of the system. Input exergy to the system is the electricity consumption of compressors and fans, and the capital cost includes purchase costs of components. Results show that, optimum values of decision variables may be found by trade-off between the input exergy cost and capital cost. Results of the exergy analysis for each of the system components in the optimum state are also given.  相似文献

Splitting the exergy destruction into endogenous/exogenous and unavoidable/avoidable parts represents a new development in the exergy analysis of energy conversion systems. This splitting improves the accuracy of exergy analysis, improves our understanding of the thermodynamic inefficiencies and facilitates the improvement of a system.

An absorption refrigeration machine is used here as an application example. This refrigeration machine represents the most complex type of a refrigeration machine, in which the sum of physical and chemical exergy is used for each material stream.  相似文献

In the present work, performance of new configuration of Micro-gas turbine cogeneration and tri-generation systems, with a steam ejector refrigeration system and Heat recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) are studied. A micro-gas turbine cycle produces 200 KW power and exhaust gases of this micro-gas turbine are recovered in an HRSG. The main part of saturated steam in HRSG is used through a steam ejector refrigeration system to produce cooling in summer. In winter, this part of saturated steam is used to produce heating. In the first part of this paper, performance evaluation of this system with respect to Energy Utilization Factor (EUF), Fuel Energy Saving Ratio (FESR), thermal efficiency, pinch point temperature difference, net power to evaporator cooling load and power to heat ratio is carried out. It has been shown that by using the present cogeneration system, one can save fuel consumption from about 23% in summer up to 33% in winter in comparison with separate generation of heating, cooling and electricity.  相似文献

Absorption refrigeration cycles are alternatives to conventional vapor‐compression cycles in which the energy required for refrigeration is provided by heat instead of mechanical work. In this paper, a novel refrigeration cycle utilizing the immiscible liquid‐phase separation behavior is simulated and analyzed using Aspen simulator. The two conjugate liquids adopted in this work are triethylamine (solute) and water (solvent). This binary system has a low critical solution temperature of 18 °C. The thermophysical properties of the binary mixture are generated using the universal functional activity coefficient (UNIFAC) and the nonrandom two‐liquid (NRTL) models. The phase splitting phenomenon at the generator temperature is predicted by both models. However, in comparison with the available experimental data for the same binary mixture, NRTL model gives better predictions for the flow rates and compositions of the material streams. Heat duties of the evaporator, absorber, and generator and the power consumption of the solution pump have been calculated using UNIFAC and NRTL models. The cycle COP that plays a major role in determining the cycle economical viability has been predicted for different operating conditions using the two models. Simulation results show that, for a waste heat reservoir at 60 °C and using NRTL model, the COP is about 2.0. Second law analysis conducted for all cycle components of the cycle shows that about 42% of the total exergy destructed occurs in the generator. Finally, the liquid‐phase separation refrigeration cycle is predicted to be a promising cycle in the near future because of hardware and energy savings. Based on available surveys, it has been shown that Iran has substantial geothermal potential in the north and north-western provinces, where in some places the temperature reaches 240 °C. In order to better exploit these renewable resources, it is necessary to study this area. Thus, the aim of this paper is a comparative study of the different geothermal power plant concepts, based on the exergy analysis for high-temperature geothermal resources. The considered cycles for this study are a binary geothermal power plant using a simple organic Rankine cycle (ORC), a binary geothermal power plant using an ORC with an internal heat exchanger (IHE), a binary cycle with a regenerative ORC, a binary cycle with a regenerative ORC with an IHE, a single-flash geothermal power plant, a double-flash geothermal power plant and a combined flash-binary power plant. With respect to each cycle, a thermodynamic model had to be developed. Model validation was undertaken using available data from the literature. Based on the exergy analysis, a comparative study was done to clarify the best cycle configuration. The performance of each cycle has been discussed in terms of the second-law efficiency, exergy destruction rate, and first-law efficiency. Comparisons between the different geothermal power plant concepts as well as many approaches to define efficiencies have been presented. The maximum first-law efficiency was found to be related to the ORC with an IHE with R123 as the working fluid and was calculated to be 7.65%. In contrast, the first-law efficiency based on the energy input into the ORC revealed that the binary cycle with the regenerative ORC with an IHE and R123 as the working fluid has the highest efficiency (15.35%). Also, the maximum first-law efficiency was shown to be given by the flash-binary with R123 as the working fluid and was calculated to be 11.81%.  相似文献

In this study, the efficiency of an LPG evaporator/regulator (E/R) is investigated on both energy and exergy concept. The E/R, which is a key part of LPG conversion systems that enables gasoline engines to be operated on LPG when desired, has been transformed to a thermal energy storage (TES) system using an adequate amount of phase change material (PCM) to be able to store waste energy of the engine coolant, so that the engine can be operated on LPG rather than gasoline even at cold start to decrease fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The engine has been tested at idle speed at 4 °C environment temperature. The PCM application provided the engine to be operated on LPG at cold start and increased the efficiency of the E/R in a considerable extent on both energy and exergy bases. It was observed that using PCM in the E/R for thermal storage, the net efficiency differences of the E/R with PCM application reach to the values of 20% and 10%, respectively for the energy and exergy calculations. The net 2nd law efficiencies were lower than the ones that of 1st law with the values of about 11% for gasoline operation, and 8% for LPG operation of the engine.  相似文献

This paper presents an exergetic analysis of a combined heat and power (CHP) system, integrating a near-atmospheric solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with an allothermal biomass fluidised bed steam gasification process. The gasification heat requirement is supplied to the fluidised bed from the SOFC stack through high-temperature sodium heat pipes. The CHP system was modelled in AspenPlus™ software including sub-models for the gasification, SOFC, gas cleaning and heat pipes. For an average current density of 3000 A m−2 the proposed system would consume 90 kg h−1 biomass producing 170 kWe net power with a system exergetic efficiency of 36%, out of which 34% are electrical.  相似文献
