This paper is to experimentally and numerically investigate the cell performance and the localized characteristics associated with a high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Three experiments are carried out in order to study the performance of the PEMFC with different operating conditions and to validate the numerical simulation model. The model proposed herein is a three-dimensional (3-D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) non-isothermal model that essentially consists of thermal–hydraulic equations and electrochemical model. The performance curves of the PEMFC predicted by the present model agree with the experimental measured data. In addition, both the experiments and the predictions precisely demonstrate the enhanced effects of inlet gas temperature and system pressure on the PEMFC performance. Based on the simulation results, the localized characteristics within a PEMFC can be reasonably captured. These parameters include the fuel gas distribution, liquid water saturation distribution, membrane conductivity distribution, temperature variation, and current density distribution etc. As the PEMFC is operated at the higher current density, the fuel gas would be insufficiently supplied to the catalyst layer, consequently causing the decline in the generation of power density. This phenomenon is so called mass transfer limitation, which can be precisely simulated by the present CFD model.  相似文献

The local transport characteristics and the global polarization curve for a self-made micro proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) have been experimentally and numerically investigated in this paper. The micro-sensors are developed to measure the local fluid temperature, cell voltage, and current density and the fuel cell test system is used to measure the polarization curve. A three-dimensional (3-D) non-isothermal compressible computational fluid dynamics (CFD) full-cell model is also adopted to simulate the test micro PEMFC. This CFD model has been validated with these global and local data. The ionic conductivity is increased as the water content in the membrane increases, enhancing the cell performance. This positive effect of inlet fuel humidity on the cell performance is also captured by the CFD simulation model.  相似文献

The construction of a reliable numerical model and the clarification of its operational conditions are necessary for maximizing fuel cell operation. Numerous operating factors, such as mole fractions of species, pressure distribution, overpotential, and inlet relative humidity, affect the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Among these operational parameters, geometrical shape and relative humidity are investigated in this paper. Specifically, the land ratio of the gas channel and rib is an important parameter affecting PEMFC performance because current density distribution is influenced by this geometrical characteristic. Three main variables determine the current density distribution, namely, species concentration, pressure, and overpotential distributions. These distributions are considered simultaneously in assessing fuel cell performance with a given PEMFC cell‐operating voltage. In this paper, three different land ratio models are considered to obtain better PEMFC performance. Similarly, three different inlet relative humidity variations are studied to achieve an enhanced operating condition. A three‐dimensional numerical PEMFC model is developed to illustrate the current density distribution as the determining factor for PEMFC performance. Water management is a crucial factor in determining the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for automotive application. The shell-and-tube water-to-gas membrane humidifier is useful for humidifying the PEMFC due to its good performance. Shell-and-tube water-to-gas membrane humidifiers have liquid water on one side of the tube wall and a dry gas on the other. In order to investigate humidifier performance, a two-dimensional dynamic model of a shell-and-tube water-to-gas membrane humidifier is developed. The model is discretized into three control volumes – shell, tube and membrane – in the cross-sectional direction to resolve the temperature and species concentration of the humidifier. For validation, the dew point temperature of the simulation result is compared with that of experimental data and shows good agreement with only a slight difference. The distribution of humidification characteristics can be captured using the discretization along the air-flow direction. The humidification performance of two different flow configurations, counter and parallel, are compared under various operating conditions and geometric parameters. Finally, the dynamic response of the humidifier at the step-change of various air flow rates is investigated. These results suggest that the model can be used to optimize the inlet flow humidity of a PEMFC.

Thermal management has been considered as one of the critical issues in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Key roles of thermal management system are maintaining optimal operating temperature of PEMFC and diminishing temperature difference over a single fuel cell and stack. Severe temperature difference causes degradation of performance and deterioration of durability, so understanding temperature distribution inside a single fuel cell and stack is crucial. In this paper, two-phase HFE-7100 cooling method is suggested for PEMFC thermal management and investigated regarding temperature change inside a fuel cell. Also, the results are compared to single-phase water cooling method. Numerical study of temperature distribution inside a single PEMFC is conducted under various conditions for the two different cooling methods. Fuel cell model considering mass transfer, electrochemical reaction and heat transfer is developed. The result indicates that two-phase HFE-7100 cooling method has an advantage in temperature maintenance and temperature uniformity than single-phase water cooling method, especially in high current density region. It is also revealed that the cell temperature is less dependent on system load change with two-phase cooling method. It indicates that the fuel cell system with two-phase cooling method has high thermal stability. In addition, the effect of coolant flow rate and coolant inlet pressure in two-phase HFE-7100 cooling method are discussed. As a result, two-phase cooling method showed reliable cooling performance even with low coolant flow rate and the system temperature increased as coolant pressure rose.  相似文献

Most generally used flow channel designs in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are serpentine flow designs as single channels or as multiple channels due to their advantages over parallel flow field designs. But these flow fields have inherent problems of high pressure drop, improper reactant distribution, and poor water management, especially near the U‐bends. The problem of inadequate water evacuation and improper reactant distribution become more severe and these designs become worse at higher current loads (low voltages). In the current work, a detailed performance study of enhanced cross‐flow split serpentine flow field (ECSSFF) design for PEMFC has been conducted using a three‐dimensional (3‐D) multiphase computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model. ECSSFF design is used for cathode part of the cell and parallel flow field on anode part of the cell. The performance of PEMFC with ECSSFF has been compared with the performance of triple serpentine flow design on cathode side by keeping all other parameters and anode side flow field design similar. The performance is evaluated in terms of their polarization curves. A parametric study is carried out by varying operating conditions, viz, cell temperature and inlet humidity on air and fuel side. The ECSSFF has shown superior performance over the triple serpentine design under all these conditions.  相似文献

A three-dimensional “full-cell” computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is proposed in this paper to investigate the effects of different flow channel designs on the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The flow channel designs selected in this work include the parallel and serpentine flow channels, single-path and multi-path flow channels, and uniform depth and step-wise depth flow channels. This model is validated by the experiments conducted in the fuel cell center of Yuan Ze University, showing that the present model can investigate the characteristics of flow channel for the PEMFC and assist in the optima designs of flow channels. The effects of different flow channel designs on the PEMFC performance obtained by the model predictions agree well with those obtained by experiments. Based on the simulation results, which are also confirmed by the experimental data, the parallel flow channel with the step-wise depth design significantly promotes the PEMFC performance. However, the performance of PEMFC with the serpentine flow channel is insensitive to these different depth designs. In addition, the distribution characteristics of fuel gases and current density for the PEMFC with different flow channels can be also reasonably captured by the present model.  相似文献

The thermal–hydraulic characteristics of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) are numerically simulated by a simplified two‐phase, multi‐component flow model. This model consists of continuity, momentum, energy and concentration equations, and appropriate equations to consider the varying flow properties of the gas–liquid two‐phase region in a PEMFC. This gas–liquid two‐phase characteristic is not considered in most of the previous simulation works. The calculated thermal–hydraulic phenomena of a PEMFC are reasonably presented in this paper, which include the distributions of flow vector, temperature, oxygen concentration, liquid water saturation, and current density, etc. Coupled with the electrochemical reaction equations, current flow model can predict the cell voltage vs current density curves (i.e. performance curves), which are validated by the single‐cell tests. The predicted performance curves for a PEMFC agree well with the experimental data. In addition, the positive effect of temperature on the cell performance is also precisely captured by this model. The model presented herein is essentially developed from the thermal–hydraulic point of view and can be considered as a stepping‐stone towards a full complete PEMFC simulation model that can help the optima design for the PEMFC and the enhancement of cell efficiency. A three-dimensional steady state two-phase non-isothermal model which highly couples the water and thermal management has been developed to numerically investigate the spatial distribution of the interfacial mass transfer phase-change rate in the cathode side of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). A non-equilibrium evaporation-condensation phase change rate was incorporated in the model which allowed supersaturation and undersaturation take place. The most significant effects of phase-change rate on liquid saturation and temperature distributions are highlighted. A parametric study was also carried out to investigate the effects of operating conditions; namely as the channel inlet humidity, cell operating temperature, and inlet mass flow rate on the phase-change rate. It was also found that liquid phase assumption for produced water in the cathode catalyst layer (CL) changed the local distribution of phase-change rate. The maximum evaporation rate zone (above the channel near the CL) coincided with the maximum temperature zone and resulted in lowering the liquid saturation level. Furthermore, reduction of the channel inlet humidity and an increase of the operation temperature and inlet mass flow rate increased the evaporation rate and allowed for dehydration process of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) to take place faster.  相似文献

The high power density and rapid adjustment to power demands make proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) one of the best candidates for a clean alternative energy sources for the 21st century. Analytical and experimental works have been presented in this paper to investigate a single PEMFC. These include a study of PEMFC performance, the effects of operating temperature and pressure on performance, and flow characteristics within the cell. Experimental data show the positive effects of temperature and pressure on performance, which is also analyzed by the two-phase multicomponent flow model validated by test data. The predicted performance curves agree reasonably with the experimental data and demonstrate the increase in cell performance at elevated temperature. In addition, the simulation model proposed in this paper can also reasonably capture the flow characteristics in a PEMFC.  相似文献

Water flooding is detrimental to the performance of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and therefore it has to be addressed. To better understand how liquid water affects the fuel cell performance, direct visualisation of liquid water in the flow channels of a transparent PEMFC is performed under different operating conditions. Two high-resolution digital cameras were simultaneously used for recording and capturing the images at the anode and cathode flow channels. A new parameter extracted from the captured images, namely the wetted bend ratio, has been introduced as an indicator of the amount of liquid water present at the flow channel. This parameter, along with another previously used parameter (wetted area ratio), has been used to explain the variation in the fuel cell performance as the operating conditions of flow rates, operating pressure and relative humidity change. The results have shown that, except for hydrogen flow rate, the wetted bend ratio strongly linked to the operating condition of the fuel cell; namely: the wetted bend ratio was found to increase with decreasing air flow rate, increasing operating pressure and increasing relative humidity. Also, the status of liquid water at the anode was found to be similar to that at the cathode for most of the cases and therefore the water dynamics at the anode side can also be used to explain the relationships between the fuel cell performance and the investigated operating conditions.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of clamping pressure on the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is investigated for three different widths of channel. The deformation of gas diffusion layer (GDL) due to clamping pressure is modeled using a finite element method, and the results are applied as inputs to a CFD model. The CFD analysis is based on finite volume method in non-isothermal condition. Also, a comparison is made between three cases to identify the geometry that has the best performance. The distribution of temperature, current density and mole fraction of oxygen are investigated for the geometry with best performance. The results reveal that by decreasing the width of channel, the performance of PEMFC improves due to increase of flow velocity. Also, it is found that intrusion of GDL into the gas flow channel due to assembly pressure deteriorates the PEMFC performance, while decrease of GDL thickness and GDL porosity have smaller effects. It is shown that assembly pressure has a minor effect on temperature profile in the membrane-catalyst interface at cathode side. Also, assembly pressure has a significant effect on ohmic and concentration losses of PEMFC at high current densities.  相似文献

The configuration of fuel, air, and cooling water paths is one of the major factors that influence the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In order to investigate the effects of these factors, a quasi-three-dimensional dynamic model of a PEMFC has been developed. For validation, simulation results are compared with experimental data in one-flow configuration case and show good agreement with the experimental cell performance data. Five different flow configurations are then simulated to systematically investigate the effects of fuel, air, and cooling channel configuration on the local current and species distribution. Voltage and power vs. current density for five different configurations are compared. The type 1 configuration, which has a fuel–air counter flow and an air-coolant co-flow, has the highest performance in all ranges of current density because the membrane remains the most hydrated. When the operating current density increases, the effects of temperature on membrane hydration slightly decrease. It is confirmed that fuel cell performance improves with increased humidity until flooding conditions appear. An interesting result shows that it is possible to lower the fuel cell operating temperature to improve fuel cell hydration, which in turn improves cell performance. In addition, the different flow configurations are shown to have an effect on the pressure losses and local current density, membrane hydration, and species mole fractions. These results suggest that the model can be used to optimize the flow configuration of a PEMFC.  相似文献

The size and configuration of manifold can affect the flow characteristics and uniformity in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack; then its efficiency and service life. Based on the simulation results of a single fuel cell considering electrochemical reaction, a stack model with 300 porous media is established to numerically investigate the performances of a large commercial PEMFC stack. The effects of manifold width and configuration type on the pressure drop and species concentration are studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results show that the uniformity for most cases of U-type configuration is better than those of Z-type configuration. For U-type configuration, a very good uniformity can be obtained by selecting anode inlet manifold width of 20 mm and anode outlet manifold in range from 25 to 30 mm; the uniformity is bad for all cathode inlet manifold width, relatively better uniformity can be achieved by adjusting cathode outlet manifold width. For Z-type configuration, bad uniformity is found for cathode inlet and outlet manifold with all width; a relatively good uniformity can be obtained with suitable anode manifold width of 35 mm. The research can provide some references to improve gas distribution uniformity in large PEMFC stacks.  相似文献

Operating parameters, material properties and flow field geometry have a deterministic role on the water storage and distribution within the flow channels and porous media in a fuel cell. However, their effects are not yet precisely understood. In this study, extensive neutron imaging experiments were conducted to visualize and quantify the amount of liquid water in the fuel cell channels and diffusion media as a function of inlet gas flow rate, cell pressure and inlet relative humidity. A seven-channel parallel flow configuration PEFC was used to isolate these parameters from flow field switchback interaction effects.

The neutron imaging experiments were performed at different inlet gas flow rates, operating cell pressures and inlet relative humidities. At each operating condition, the distribution of liquid water in the diffusion media under the lands, and in or under the channels was obtained. Furthermore, at three different cell pressures (0.2 MPa, 0.15 MPa and 0.1 MPa), liquid water distribution and quantification was obtained. The liquid water mass in the cell decreased with increasing pressure for over-humidified anode inlet conditions. Comparison of the fuel cell performance with the total liquid water mass in the cell indicates a non-monotonic relationship between liquid water content and performance. Furthermore, cell performance was highly sensitive to incremental changes in the membrane liquid water content.  相似文献

Simulations are performed to examine the performance of a vacuum ejector in the hydrogen recovery loop of a 10-kW PEMFC system. The simulations commence by examining the effects of the primary flow fluid pressure and secondary flow temperature on the recirculation ratio and hydrogen stoichiometric ratio. Further simulations are then performed to investigate the temperature, pressure, velocity and Mach number distributions within the ejector for various values of the primary flow inlet pressure and temperature. A prototype ejector is fabricated using a 3D printing technique. Experiments are performed to evaluate the gas tightness and gas recovery performance of the ejector under realistic operating conditions. The simulation results show that the recirculation ratio and hydrogen stoichiometric ratio increase with a decreasing primary flow inlet pressure and secondary flow inlet temperature. As the primary flow inlet pressure increases, the pressure, velocity, and Mach number in the mixing chamber increase, and the hydrogen recovery performance decreases. Furthermore, as the temperature of the primary fluid flow increases, the stability of the isentropic flow condition within the ejector is enhanced. The experimental results show that the prototype vacuum ejector has a maximum gas leakage of just 0.7 psi and a minimum hydrogen recirculation rate of 59.3%. Consequently, it has significant potential for passive hydrogen recovery in large-scale fuel cell systems.  相似文献
