The authors determined whether results of experiments on copulatory and affiliative behavior of pairs of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) conducted in a closely confining apparatus would predict behavior in a large enclosure in which female quail could avoid contact with male quail. As found previously in studies of closely confined quail, in a large enclosure containing numerous barriers, both unmated female quail and mated female quail laying unfertilized eggs were more likely to remain near a confined male quail than were mated female quail laying fertilized eggs. Furthermore, the number of copulations that a pair engaged in when closely confined predicted the number of copulations that they engaged in when they were in the large enclosure. Patterns of affiliation and of mating in a confining laboratory apparatus thus predicted behavior in a larger enclosure that provided female quail with opportunity to avoid contact with male quail. In the present study, the authors explored the reproductive consequences of fetishistic behavior in a previously developed animal model of sexual fetishism (F. K?ksal et al., 2004). Male domesticated quail (Coturnix japonica) received sexual conditioning trials in which a terrycloth object (the conditioned stimulus [CS]) was paired with the opportunity to copulate with a female quail (the unconditioned stimulus). Approximately half of the male quail came to copulate with the CS object and were considered to have developed fetishistic behavior. Each of the male quail was then tested with a female quail, whose eggs were incubated to determine rates of fertilization. The CS object was present for 30 s before and during the copulation test. Fetishistic male quail were slower to achieve cloacal contact with the female quail and showed less efficient copulatory behavior. However, they fertilized a greater proportion of eggs than nonfetishistic male quail. These results are unexpected from previous studies of the relationship between reproductive success and copulatory behavior and are discussed in terms of how fetishistic behavior directed toward an inanimate object may modify male-female interactions. The authors examined how a conditioned stimulus (CS) that included species-typical cues affected the acquisition and extinction of conditioned sexual responses in male quail (Coturnix japonica). Some subjects were conditioned with a CS that supported sexual responses and included a taxidermic head of a female quail. Others were conditioned with a similar CS that lacked species-typical cues. Pairing the CSs with access to live females increased CS-directed behavior, with the head CS eliciting significantly more responding than the no-head CS. Responding to the head CS persisted during the 42-day, 126-trial extinction phase; responses to the no-head CS extinguished. Responding declined when the cues were removed or the subjects were sexually satiated. Possible functions and mechanisms of these effects are discussed. Two experiments investigated the role of estrogens in the activation and sexual differentiation of appetitive sexual behavior (ASB) in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) as measured by a learned social proximity response. Injection of the aromatase inhibitor R767 13 in castrated, testosterone (T)-treated male quail completely suppressed ASB, confirming that, like consummatory sexual behavior, ASB is mediated by T aromatization. ASB is not observed in female quail, even if they are treated with T as adults. The role of embryonic estrogens in the sexual differentiation of ASB was tested by blocking estrogen synthesis in ovo. Control male and T-treated female quail deprived of estrogens during embryonic life learned the social proximity response used to assess ASB, whereas control female quail did not, despite the presence of high T. Thus, ASB is demasculinized by the action of embryonic estrogens during ontogeny as is consummatory behavior.  相似文献

Tested 24 male, Long-Evans hooded rats in 2 motivational states (hungry and satiated) and 2 social conditions (single and paired) in adjacent and communicating Skinner boxes for the effect of a social stimulus on operant behavior. The social stimulus interfered in all conditions except 1: satiated Ss paired with hungry Ss pressed the bar significantly more often than in any other condition. It is concluded that the social facilitation effect is produced by progressive changes in the motivational state of the S as well as by a set of stimuli triggering the operant behavior. Determined, in 3 experiments with 10 Long-Evans rats, that cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) reduced the amount consumed or the number of licks of several concentrations of sucrose in short-term tests with Ss that were hungry, satiated, or fed ad lib. The suppressive effect of CCK-8 was generally smaller in the hungry than in the satiated or ad-lib condition. In the satiated and ad-lib conditions, there was no effect of sucrose concentration on the magnitude of the CCK-8 effect. In hungry Ss, the concentration-intake function for sucrose was lowered and flattened by both CCK and natural satiety. To determine whether a taste change is involved in this short-term reduction of sucrose intake, integrated chorda tympani responses were measured before and after iv infusions of CCK-8 or NaCl. The peak response to .3 M sucrose significantly increased after 2 5-μg infusions of CCK-8. Peak and tonic responses to sucrose and saline tended to increase after CCK-8 but not NaCl infusions. Results suggest that CCK-8 reduces sucrose intake in situations in which postingestional factors are minimal and that sucrose concentration has little effect on the size of this suppression. A change in perceived taste intensity or quality may play a role in the inhibitory effect of CCK-8 on intake. (33 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to identify species-specific sign stimuli sufficient to elicit copulatory behavior in male Japanese quail and to determine how learning is involved in the control of behavior by these sign stimuli. In Exp 1, sexually experienced Ss were tested for copulatory behavior with a live female quail and with a model consisting of a female quail's head and neck mounted in front of a foam pad. Comparable levels of copulatory behavior were observed in the two tests, indicating that static visual cues provided by a female quail's head and neck are sufficient to elicit copulatory behavior in this species. Exp 2 showed that male birds that previously received numerous opportunities to copulate with a live female quail in the test situation were significantly more likely to copulate with the head?+?neck model than were sexually inexperienced Ss. Exp 3 showed that prior sexual experience with live quail facilitated responding to the head?+?neck model only if the sexual experience was provided in the same place where Ss were later tested with the model. This finding suggests that sexual experience facilitates control of copulatory behavior by species-specific sign stimuli through contextual conditioning. Rats maintained on an unadulterated synthetic food, available from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. everyday, were submitted to an aversive conditioning schedule on which a first ingestion of eucalyptol-flavored food (EF) was followed by an apomorphine injection (20 mg/kg, ip). In the first experiment the daily food intake was measured from Day 1 to 17, during the first and second hours of the meal. The EF was offered on Days 8, 9, and 17 during the first or the second hour of the meal (Series B or A). On Day 8, the meal was followed in a group of rats by the apomorphine injection. As compared with the intake of Day 8, the mean EF intake of Day 9 was significantly decreased in Series A and B, and of Day 17 in Series A only. No significant EF-intake modification could be observed in a saline-injected group or in an untreated control group. In the second experiment, rats bearing bulbar electrodes for the chronic recording of multiunit mitral cell responses received a 2-hr EF meal before the apomorphine injection. They were stimulated by puffs of odors of pure eucalyptol, unadulterated food, and EF and recorded in hungry and satiated states. Before the aversive conditioning, a significantly greater occurrence of positive responses to the odors of unadulterated food and EF was observed in hungry rats compared with satiated rats. The eucalyptol odor yielded equivalent patterns of responses in hungry and satiated rats before and after conditioning. Conditioning did not alter the modulated responses to unadulterated food odor (a greater occurrence of positive responses was still observed in hungry rats) but modified the responses to the odor of EF (the same high rate of positive responses was then observed in satiated and hungry rats). Electrophysiological data are discussed in terms of palatability changes and food-odor meaning.  相似文献

In Exp I, 8 sexually deprived male Japanese quail were exposed to 1 of 7 female Japanese quail until they satisfied a 20-min sexual satiation criterion. The female was then replaced with a novel female or was allowed to remain in the test cage undisturbed. Introduction of the novel female did not reinvigorate sexual behavior above levels observed when the female was allowed to remain undisturbed. In Exp II, with 9 males and 15 females, males that were not sexually deprived were tested in the presence of 2 females. During experimental tests, 1 of the females was novel and the other was familiar. During control tests, both of the females were familiar. The presence of a novel female increased overall levels of male sexual behavior and also increased the number of males engaged in reproductive behavior. However, the enhanced sexual behavior was not differentially directed toward the novel or familiar female. Implications of these findings for the mating system of Japanese quail and for studies of the role of novelty in sexual behavior are discussed. J. Contole and R. Over's (1979, 1981) procedure for studying infant discrimination using a signal detection analysis of observers' ratings of infant behavior was used to test claims by E. Tronick et al (see record 1980-07280-001) that 3-mo-olds distinguish people from objects and nonverbally communicate with familiar caregivers. 12 observers—parents and undergraduates—judged from videotaped samples of 3- and 10-mo-old infants' behavior if the infants were alone or otherwise, if they were with something that was active or passive, and if they were greeting or withdrawing. Observers could only judge whether the infants were with their mother or an object for the 10-mo-olds. The greeting–withdrawal results seem to indicate that 3-mo-olds do communicate with their caregivers; however, observers were also able to judge greeting–withdrawal when the infants were with an object. There were no sensitivity differences between the 2 observer groups, although the parents were biased to expect the infants to be with mother and to be greeting. Two experiments were carried out during which the noradrenergic neurotoxin, 5-amino-2,4-dihydroxy-alpha-methylphenylethylamine (5-ADMP) was applied to the brain of quail in order to evaluate the role of the noradrenergic system in the control of male copulatory behavior. In the first experiment, the ICV injection of 5-ADMP slightly enhanced the sexual behavior observed in testosterone (T)-treated castrated male quail. This brings additional support to the notion that norepinephrine tonically inhibits male copulatory behavior in quail. In the second experiment, 5-ADMP implanted directly into the preoptic area disrupted the restoration by T of copulatory behavior in castrated quail and, at the same time, produced a brain lesion that partly destroyed the sexually dimorphic medial preoptic nucleus, a previously established site of T action on behavior. These lesions produced by a high (presumably too high) concentration of neurotoxin provided an independent confirmation of effects previously observed after electrolytic lesions. Correlation analyses also confirmed that the medial part of the POM just rostral to the anterior commissure is more closely associated with copulatory behavior and may, therefore, represent a key center for steroid action on this behavior.  相似文献

Male Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) that conspecific females preferred in a 10-min, forced-choice test of affiliative preference were more likely than were males not preferred in such a test to fertilize females' eggs when subsequently mated with them, although preferred and nonpreferred males mated equally often with females. Further, the probability that a nonpreferred male would fertilize a female's eggs was significantly increased if she watched while he courted and mated with another female. The results indicate that in Japanese quail (a) affiliative preference reliably predicts females' choices of fathers for their offspring and (b) females may have some degree of control over whether the males with whom they mate actually fertilize their eggs. Objective: To determine how visceral impulses, such as hunger and drug craving, influence health beliefs. Design: The authors assessed smokers' self-efficacy and intentions to quit while in a randomly assigned state of cigarette craving or noncraving (Study 1), and assessed dieters weight-loss beliefs while hungry or satiated (Study 2). Main outcome measures: Self-efficacy, smoking cessation, weight-loss goals. Results: The authors found, in both the context of smoking and weight-loss, that participants in a cold (e.g., satiated) state had different health beliefs than participants in a hot state (e.g., hungry). Specifically, in Study 1, the authors found that smokers who experienced cigarette craving had lower self-efficacy than did satiated smokers. Consequently, smokers who craved a cigarette had less intention to quit smoking in the future compared with satiated smokers. In Study 2, the authors found that hungry dieters had less self-efficacy than did satiated dieters. This difference led hungry dieters to form less ambitious future weight-loss goals and view prior weight-loss attempts with more satisfaction. Conclusion: These findings contribute to our understanding of the nature of health beliefs and reveal that health beliefs are more dynamic than previously assumed. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to determine whether visual responses to food in the human amygdala and related corticolimbic structures would be selectively altered by changes in states of hunger. Participants (19–44 yr olds) viewed images of motivationally relevant (food) and motivationally irrelevant (tool) objects while undergoing FMRI in alternately hungry and satiated conditions. Food-related visual stimuli elicited greater responses in the amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, and anterior fusiform gyrus when participants were in a hungry state relative to a satiated state. The state-dependent activation of these brain structures did not generalize to the motivationally irrelevant objects. These results support the hypothesis that the amygdala and associated inferotemporal regions are involved in the integration of subjective interoceptive states with relevant sensory cues processed along the ventral visual stream. Previous research by the present authors (see record 1986-16367-001) showed that after opportunity for copulation, male Japanese quail spent about 75% of their time throughout daylight hours near a window that provided visual access to a female conspecific. In Exp I of the present study, 8 female Japanese quail typically spent less than 20% of their time near a window that provided visual access to 1 of 8 male conspecifics under comparable conditions. In Exp II, using the same Ss, a small clear plastic cage was placed in a large test arena, and Ss were observed when the cage was either empty or contained a sexual partner. Males tended to remain much closer to the cage when it contained a female conspecific than when it was empty. In contrast, the presence of a male did not significantly attract females to the cage area. These findings demonstrate strong sexual dimorphism in the social proximity behavior of Japanese quail. Results are discussed in terms of implications concerning the social structure of Japanese quail and implications for studies of sexual classical conditioning. The study of imitative learning in animals has suffered from the presence of a number of confounding motivational and attentional factors (e.g., social facilitation and stimulus enhancement). The two-action method avoids these problems by exposing observers to demonstrators performing a response (e.g., operating a treadle) using 1 of 2 distinctive topographies (e.g., pecking or by stepping). Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) observers exposed to conspecific demonstrators showed a high correlation between the topography of the response they observed and the response they performed. These data provide strong evidence for the existence of true imitative learning in an active, precocious bird under conditions that control for alternative accounts. Argues that the discipline of psychology is composed of subfields studying different sets of phenomena. Characterizations of persons form one major world of psychological phenomena; behaviors make up another. These worlds are differentiated in many ways: according to whether meanings are assigned a priori or a posteriori, whether the unit of observation is extended in time or is brief and momentary, whether the individual observer contributes to the observation or observers are essentially interchangeable. The validity problems that plague research on characteristics of persons are minimized or avoided in studies of behaviors. Although psychologists have developed a technology that contributes to the quality of evaluative judgments made about persons in everyday living, a science for characterizations of persons seems improbable. Much more likely is the development of one or more sciences for the phenomena of behavior, especially of actions in the context of other actions. Behavioral reactions to a nearby human were recorded in male Japanese quail of two lines selected for reduced (LS; low stress) or exaggerated (HS; high stress) plasma corticosterone (B) response to brief mechanical immobilization. Their adrenocortical responses to one of three treatments were then examined. These were: no human disturbance (undisturbed controls, CON), capture and return to the home cage before recapture and bleeding after 5 min (CR), or capture and manual restraint for 5 min before blood sampling (CREST). Quail of the HS line showed more fear-related behavior (crouching, escape) and avoidance of the experimenter than did their LS counterparts. Plasma B concentrations were markedly elevated following each capture treatment (CREST > CR) and the response appeared to be more pronounced in quail of the HS than the LS line. These findings indicate that HS quail perceived human contact to be more aversive than did those of the LS line. Avoidance scores and the adrenocortical responses to capture were positively correlated within individual birds. Therefore, simple behavioral tests of fear may have predictive value concerning physiological responsiveness to stressful stimulation.  相似文献

Adult male and female Japanese quail were functionally castrated by exposure to a short photoperiod and then injected with either estradiole benzoate (EB) or testosterone propionate (TP). Females injected with EB (n = 24) exhibited normal sexual receptivity again but displayed no male courtship behavior. Males injected with EB (n = 10) showed both male and female copulatory patterns. Females injected with TP (n = 14) showed little sexual behavior of any sort, while males injected with TP (n = 10) displayed male sexual behavior. The male quail is thus more bisexual than the female. In contrast with mammalian species, the female is more bisexual. The difference is discussed in relation to the differences in the embryology and cytogenetics of birds and mammals. (29 ref.) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The conditioned responses of male and female Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were compared in a Pavlovian conditioning procedure in which presentation of a brief conditioned stimulus was immediately followed by the release of a copulation partner. Male quail vigorously approached the conditioned stimulus and were much more likely to enter the compartment housing their copulation partner than were female birds (Experiment 1). In females, sexual conditioning resulted in increased squatting (Experiment 2). This response was the reflection of sexual behavior rather than more general social behavior (Experiment 3). These findings provide the first definitive evidence of sexual learning in female quail and are consistent with the interpretation that sexual conditioning increases sexual arousal or receptivity in both sexes but the increase has different behavioral manifestations in male and female quail.
