Wind energy systems have been considered for Canada's remote communities in order to reduce their costs and dependence on diesel fuel to generate electricity. Given the high capital costs, low-penetration wind–diesel systems have been typically found not to be economic. High-penetration wind–diesel systems have the benefit of increased economies of scale, and displacing significant amounts of diesel fuel, but have the disadvantage of not being able to capture all of the electricity that is generated when the wind turbines operate at rated capacity.Two representative models of typical remote Canadian communities were created using HOMER, an NREL micro-power simulator to model how a generic energy storage system could help improve the economics of a high-penetration wind–diesel system. Key variables that affect the optimum system are average annual wind speed, cost of diesel fuel, installed cost of storage and a storage systems overall efficiency. At an avoided cost of diesel fuel of 0.30 $Cdn/kWh and current installed costs, wind generators are suitable in remote Canadian communities only when an average annual wind speed of at least 6.0 m/s is present. Wind energy storage systems become viable to consider when average annual wind speeds approach 7.0 m/s, if the installed cost of the storage system is less than 1000 $Cdn/kW and it is capable of achieving at least a 75% overall energy conversion efficiency. In such cases, energy storage system can enable an additional 50% of electricity from wind turbines to be delivered.  相似文献

Standalone diesel generating system utilized in remote areas has long been practiced in Malaysia. Due to highly fluctuating diesel price, such a system is seemed to be uneconomical, especially in the long run if the supply of electricity for rural areas solely depends on such diesel generating system. This paper would analyze the potential use of hybrid photovoltaic (PV)/diesel energy system in remote locations. National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) HOMER software was used to perform the techno-economic feasibility of hybrid PV/diesel energy system. The investigation demonstrated the impact of PV penetration and battery storage on energy production, cost of energy and number of operational hours of diesel generators for the given hybrid configurations. Emphasis has also been placed on percentage fuel savings and reduction in carbon emissions of different hybrid systems. At the end of this paper, suitability of utilizing hybrid PV/diesel energy system over standalone diesel system would be discussed mainly based on different solar irradiances and diesel prices.  相似文献

A large number of stand-alone power systems that are based on fossil fuel or renewable energy (RE) based, are installed all over Europe. Such systems, often comprising photovoltaics (PV) and/or diesel generators provide power to communities or technical installations, which do not have access to the local or national electricity grid. The replacement of conventional technologies such as diesel generators and/or batteries with hydrogen technologies, including fuel cells in an existing PV-diesel stand-alone power system providing electricity to a remote community was simulated and optimised, using the hybrid optimisation model for electric renewables (HOMER) simulation tool. A techno-economic analysis of the existing hybrid stand-alone power system and the optimised hydrogen-based system was also conducted. The results of the analyses showed that the replacement of fossil fuel based gensets with hydrogen technologies is technically feasible, but still not economically viable, unless significant reductions in the cost of hydrogen technologies are made in the future.  相似文献

A rapid start-up strategy of a diesel reformer for on-board fuel cell applications was developed by fuel cell integration. With the integration with metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell which has high thermal shock resistance, a simpler and faster start-up protocol of the diesel reformer was obtained compared to that of the independent reformer setup without considering fuel cell integration. A reformer without fuel cell integration showed unstable reactor temperatures during the start-up process, which affects the reforming catalyst durability. By utilizing waste heat from the fuel cell stack, steam required at the diesel autothermal reforming could be stably provided during the start-up process. The developed diesel reformer was thermally sustainable after the initial heat-up process. As a result, the overall start-up time of the reformer after the diesel supply was reduced to 9 min from the diesel supply compared to 22 min without fuel cell integration.  相似文献

This paper discusses the uptake potential for a wind–diesel production incentive designed specifically for Canadian northern and remote communities. In spite of having over 300 remote communities with extremely high electricity costs, Canada has had little success in developing remote wind energy projects. Most of Canada’s large-scale wind power has been developed as a direct result of a Federal production incentive implemented in 2002. Using this incentive structure as a successful model, this paper explores how an incentive tailored to remote wind power could be deployed. Micro-power simulations were done to demonstrate that the production incentive designed by the Canadian Wind Energy Association would cost on average $4.7 $Cdn million and could be expected to result in 14.5 MW of wind energy projects in remote villages in Canada over a 10 year period, saving 11.5 $Cdn million dollars in diesel costs annually, displacing 7600 tonnes of CO2eq emissions and 9.6 million litres of diesel fuel every year.  相似文献

The provision of both electrical and mechanical energy services can play a critical role in poverty alleviation for the almost two billion rural users who currently lack access to electricity. Distributed generation using diesel generators remains a common means of electricity provision for rural communities throughout the world. Due to rising fuel costs, the need to address poverty, and consequences of global warming, it is necessary to develop cost efficient means of reducing fossil fuel consumption in isolated diesel microgrids. Based on a case study in Nicaragua, a set of demand and supply side measures are ordered by their annualized costs in order to approximate an energy supply curve. The curve highlights significant opportunities for reducing the costs of delivering energy services while also transitioning to a carbon-free electrical system. In particular, the study demonstrates the significant cost savings resulting from the implementation of conventional metering, efficient residential lighting, and electricity generation using renewable energy sources.  相似文献

Electricity supply in remote areas around the world is mostly guaranteed by diesel generators. This relatively inefficient and expensive method is responsible for 1.2 million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in Canada annually. Some low- and high-penetration wind-diesel hybrid systems (WDS) have been experimented in order to reduce the diesel consumption. We explore the re-engineering of current diesel power plants with the introduction of high-penetration wind systems together with compressed air energy storage (CAES). This is a viable alternative to major the overall percentage of renewable energy and reduce the cost of electricity. In this paper, we present the operative principle of this hybrid system, its economic benefits and advantages and we finally propose a numerical model of each of its components. Moreover, we are demonstrating the energy efficiency of the system, particularly in terms of the increase of the engine performance and the reduction of its fuel consumption illustrated and supported by a village in northern Quebec.  相似文献

A complete miniaturized methanol fuel processor/fuel cell system was developed and put into operation as compact hydrogen supplier for low power application. The whole system consisting of a micro-structured evaporator, a micro-structured reformer and two stages of preferential oxidation of CO (PROX) reactor, micro-structured catalytic burner, and fuel cell was operated to evaluate the performance of the whole production line from methanol to electricity. The performance of micro methanol steam reformer and PROX reactor was systematically investigated. The effect of reaction temperature, steam to carbon ratio, and contact time on the methanol steam reformer performance is presented in terms of catalytic activity, selectivity, and reformate yield. The performance of PROX reactor fed with the reformate produced by the reformer reactor was evaluated by the variation of reaction temperature and oxygen to CO ratio. The results demonstrate that micro-structured device may be an attractive power source candidate for low power application.  相似文献

The advantages of fuel cell systems on naval surface vessels are generally based on their low emissions, high comfort and high efficiency. Today the NATO-logistic fuel for naval ships is F76 marine diesel fuel. Because of its availability and the fact that the use of hydrogen onboard ships would require a much higher storage volume, the reforming of F76 diesel fuel is essential for the implementation of fuel cell systems on naval surface vessels. The DESIRE-project has been performed from 2001 until 2004 to demonstrate the feasibility of the reforming of F76 diesel fuel into a hydrogen-rich gas suitable to be utilized in PEM-fuel cells. A steam reformer system has been realized in the project. A small PEM-fuel cell has been coupled to the reformer system and operated successfully.  相似文献

Integration of wind machines and battery storage with the diesel plants is pursued widely to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of battery storage on the economics of hybrid wind‐diesel power systems in commercial applications by analyzing wind‐speed data of Dhahran, East‐Coast, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (K.S.A.). The annual load of a typical commercial building is 620,000 kWh. The monthly average wind speeds range from 3.3 to 5.6 m/s. The hybrid systems simulated consist of different combinations of 100‐kW commercial wind machines (CWMs) supplemented with battery storage and diesel generators. National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) (HOMER Energy's) Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) software has been employed to perform the economic analysis. The simulation results indicate that for a hybrid system comprising of 100‐kW wind capacity together with 175‐kW diesel system and a battery storage of 4 h of autonomy (i.e. 4 h of average load), the wind penetration (at 37‐m hub height, with 0% annual capacity shortage) is 25%. The cost of generating energy (COE, $/kWh) from this hybrid wind–battery–diesel system has been found to be 0.139 $/kWh (assuming diesel fuel price of 0.1$/L). The investigation examines the effect of wind/battery penetration on: COE, operational hours of diesel gensets. Emphasis has also been placed on un‐met load, excess electricity, fuel savings and reduction in carbon emissions (for wind–diesel without battery storage, wind–diesel with storage, as compared to diesel‐only situation), cost of wind–battery–diesel systems, COE of different hybrid systems, etc. The study addresses benefits of incorporation of short‐term battery storage (in wind–diesel systems) in terms of fuel savings, diesel operation time, carbon emissions, and excess energy. Thermodynamic analysis of hydrogen production by steam reforming and autothermal reforming of bio-butanol was investigated for solid oxide fuel cell applications. The effects of reformer operating conditions, e.g., reformer temperature, steam to carbon molar ratio, and oxygen to carbon molar ratio, were investigated with the objective to maximize hydrogen production and to reduce utility requirements of the process and based on which favorable conditions of reformer were proposed. Process flow diagram for steam reforming and autothermal reforming integrated with solid oxide fuel cell was developed. Heat integration with pinch analysis method was carried out for both the processes at favorable reformer conditions. Power generation, electrical efficiency, useful energy for co-generation application, and utility requirements for both the processes were compared.  相似文献

The aim of this research is to analyze the techno‐economic performance of hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) using batteries, pumped hydro‐based, and hydrogen‐based storage units at Sharurah, Saudi Arabia. The simulations and optimization process are carried out for nine HRES scenarios to determine the optimum sizes of components for each scenario. The optimal sizing of components for each HRES scenario is determined based on the net present cost (NPC) optimization criterion. All of the nine optimized HRES scenarios are then evaluated based on NPC, levelized cost of energy, payback period, CO2 emissions, excess electricity, and renewable energy fraction. The simulation results show that the photovoltaic (PV)‐diesel‐battery scenario is economically the most viable system with the NPC of US$2.70 million and levelized cost of energy of US$0.178/kWh. Conversely, PV‐diesel‐fuel cell system is proved to be economically the least feasible system. Moreover, the wind‐diesel‐fuel cell is the most economical scenario in the hydrogen‐based storage category. PV‐wind‐diesel‐pumped hydro scenario has the highest renewable energy fraction of 89.8%. PV‐wind‐diesel‐pumped hydro scenario is the most environment‐friendly system, with an 89% reduction in CO2 emissions compared with the base‐case diesel only scenario. Overall, the systems with battery and pumped hydro storage options have shown better techno‐economic performance compared with the systems with hydrogen‐based storage.  相似文献

Fuel economy and emission abatement are issues, which are highly prioritized areas in the automotive industry of today. The debate about climate change has in recent years even more emphasized the importance of these issues and has increased the search for finding sustainable technical solutions. This paper describes an effort to develop an innovative and environmentally-benign hydrogen generation system operating on commercial diesel fuel to avoid running the engine to supply electricity at stand-still. The use of a fuel cell-based auxiliary power unit (APU) has the potential of delivering electricity at high efficiencies independent of the heavy-duty truck engine. During the reformer development phase, spray formation and mixing of reactants proved to be crucial to obtain high reforming efficiencies and low diesel slip. The diesel is being injected through a nozzle creating a spray of fine droplets of a size which can establish rapid evaporation. Air and steam are being pre-heated and injected into the mixture chamber and subsequently mixed with the evaporated diesel fuel. Depending on the operating parameters, a part of the fuel is being oxidized and produces heat. Autothermal reforming was chosen to circumvent the heat transfer problem in catalytic steam reforming. By supplying heat directly to the catalyst surface by an oxidation reaction the heat demand of the strongly endothermic steam reforming reaction can be fulfilled. We employed CFD calculations, which revealed the importance of avoiding large recirculation zones leading to a prolonged residence time of the hydrocarbon molecules and causing auto-ignition and excessive temperatures in the catalyst. Five different reformer generations are being described and discussed in detail in this publication. The first one was based on a fixed bed reactor, while the other four all relied on catalytic monoliths enabling low pressure drops. The early reactor designs all suffered from auto-ignition and instability problems. The latter generations exhibited a considerably more stable temperature profile in the reformer. The conversion of diesel and the reformer efficiencies are significantly higher than the early generation diesel reformers.  相似文献

This paper presents results from the ongoing optimisation of a microchannel steam reformer for diesel fuel which is developed in the framework of the development of a PEM fuel cell system for vehicular applications. Four downscaled reformers with different catalytic coatings of precious metal were operated in order to identify the most favourable catalyst formulation. Diesel surrogate was processed at varying temperatures and steam to carbon ratios (S/C). The reformer performance was investigated considering hydrogen yield, reformate composition, fuel conversion, and deactivation from carbon formation. Complete fuel conversion is obtained with several catalysts. One catalyst in particular is less susceptible to carbon formation and shows a high selectivity.  相似文献

To examine the feasibility of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-powered unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV), a system level analysis is presented that projects a possible integration of the SOFC stack, fuel steam reformer, fuel/oxidant storage and balance of plant components into a 21-in. diameter UUV platform. Heavy hydrocarbon fuel (dodecane) and liquid oxygen (LOX) are chosen as the preferred reactants. A maximum efficiency of 45% based on the lower heating value of dodecane was calculated for a system that provides 2.5 kW for 40 h. Heat sources and sinks have been coupled to show viable means of thermal management. The critical design issues involve proper recycling of exhaust steam from the fuel cell back into the reformer and effective use of the SOFC stack radiant heat for steam reformation of the hydrocarbon fuel.  相似文献

An endothermic methanol steam reformer achieves optimal performance at a temperature of about 240 °C. A polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane fuel cell was operated exothermically at 160 °C–200 °C. To better couple the lower temperature fuel cell to the higher temperature steam reformer, a two-stage temperature steam reformer to integrate into the PBI membrane fuel cell system is proposed. The reformer optimizes thermal management and increases the system efficiency.  相似文献

Biodiesel is considered as a renewable hydrogen source for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). This study contributes to a fundamental understanding of biodiesel autothermal reforming (ATR), which has not yet been widely explored in the open literature. Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) ATR is established as a baseline for this analysis. This work applies a micro-soot meter based on a photo-acoustic method to quantify the condensed carbon from a single-tube reactor, and uses a mass spectrometer to measure the effluent gas composition under different operating conditions (reformer temperature, steam/carbon ratio, oxygen/carbon ratio, and gas hourly space velocity). The key objective is to identify the optimum operating environment for biodiesel ATR with carbon-free deposition and peak hydrogen yield. Thermodynamic analysis based on the method of total Gibbs free energy minimization is used to evaluate the equilibrium composition of effluent from the reformer. The experimental investigations complimented with this theoretical analysis of biodiesel ATR enable effectively optimizing the onboard reforming conditions. This study is one component of a three-part investigation of bio-fuel reforming, also including fuel vaporization and reactant mixing (Part 1) and biodiesel–diesel blends (Part 3).  相似文献

This paper presents experimental results of a diesel steam reforming fuel processor operated in conjunction with a gas cleanup module and coupled operation with a PEM fuel cell. The fuel processor was operated with two different precious-metal based reformer catalysts, using diesel surrogate with a sulfur content of less than 2 ppmw as fuel. The first reformer catalyst entails an increasing residual hydrocarbon concentration for increasing reformer fuel feed. The second reformer catalyst exhibits a significantly lower residual hydrocarbon concentration in the reformate gas.  相似文献

A new configuration of a mixing chamber integrated with a customized porous nozzle has been developed to completely vaporize heavy hydrocarbon fuels (e.g., diesel, biodiesel) and achieve homogenous mixing of fuel/air/steam. This proposed configuration suppresses hydrocarbon thermal pyrolysis and solid carbon formation in the fuel vaporization step. The porous nozzle promotes the micro-explosion of emulsified fuel and accelerates secondary atomization to reduce the droplet size. The mixing chamber with customized nozzle was integrated in a single-tube reformer system in order to analyze its effect on diesel and biodiesel auto-thermal reforming (ATR). It has been demonstrated that the customized nozzle not only improved the hydrogen production rate and the reforming efficiency, but it also stabilized the chemical reactions within the reformer and prevented the reactor inlet from high temperature sintering. For diesel ATR, this mixing chamber–reformer combination enabled operation at relatively low reformer temperature without forming solid carbon. The economics of stand-alone photovoltaic power system is studied to test its feasibility in remote and rural areas of Bangladesh and to compare renewable generators with non-renewable generators. The life cycle cost of these generators are determined using the method of net present value analysis. It is found that the life cycle cost of this experimental PV system is Tk. 43.40/kWh for one family (US $1.00 = Bangladeshi taka Tk.50.00). The life cycle cost for grid electricity is Tk. 20.00/kWh and Tk. 7.75/kWh for generation of fuel costs of Tk. 6.80/kWh and Tk. 0.47/kWh respectively. For a village 1 km away from the distribution line, this cost becomes Tk. 125.00/kWh for a family. For petrol generator life cycle cost is Tk. 50.00/kWh at fuel price of Tk. 22.00 per litre. For diesel generator life cycle cost is found to be Tk. 46.10/kWh at fuel cost of Tk. 15.00 per litre. It is observed that the life cycle cost of one unit of energy from grids that are 1 km away from a village is much higher than the cost of energy from a PV system. Thus, the use of PV system is economically feasible in rural villages and remote areas of Bangladesh, where grid electricity is not available.  相似文献
