Compared with hydrogel‐like biological tissues such as cartilage, muscles, and blood vessels, current hyaluronic acid hydrogels often suffer from poor toughness and limited self‐healing properties. Herein, a facile and generalizable strategy inspired by mussel cuticles is presented to fabricate tough and self‐healing double‐network hyaluronic acid hydrogels. These hydrogels are composed of ductile, reversible Fe3+‐catechol interaction primary networks, and secondarily formed brittle, irreversible covalent networks. Based on this design strategy, the hyaluronic acid hydrogels are demonstrated to exhibit reinforced mechanical strength while maintaining a rapid self‐healing property. In addition, by simply regulating pH or UV irradiation time, the mechanical properties of the hydrogels can be regulated conveniently through variations between the primary and secondary networks.  相似文献

It remains a challenge to develop tough hydrogels with recoverable or healable properties after damage. Herein, a new nanocomposite double‐network hydrogel (NC‐DN) consisting of first agar network and a homogeneous vinyl‐functionalized silica nanoparticles (VSNPs) macro‐crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAM) second network is reported. VSNPs are prepared via sol‐gel process using vinyltriethoxysilane as a silicon source. Then, Agar/PAM‐SiO2 NC‐DN hydrogels are fabricated by dual physically hydrogen bonds and VSNPs macro‐crosslinking. Under deformation, the reversible hydrogen bonds in agar network and PAM nanocomposite network successively break to dissipate energy and then recombine to recover the network, while VSNPs in the second network could effectively transfer stress to the network chains grafted on their surfaces and maintain the gel network. As a result, the optimal NC‐DN hydrogels exhibit ultrastretchable (fracture strain 7822%), super tough (fracture toughness 18.22 MJ m‐3, tensile strength 431 kPa), rapidly recoverable (≈92% toughness recovery after 5 min resting at room temperature), and self‐healable (can be stretched to 1331% after healing) properties. The newly designed Agar/PAM‐SiO2 NC‐DN hydrogels with tunable network structure and mechanical properties by multi‐bond crosslinking provide a new avenue to better understand the fundamental structure‐property relationship of DN hydrogels and broaden the current hydrogel research and applications.  相似文献

In order to develop a potential drug sustained delivery carrier suitable for wound healing, a series of β‐cyclodextrin conjugated hyaluronan hydrogels (β‐CD‐HA) with adjustable crosslink densities were synthesized and characterized, meanwhile the delivery kinetics and mechanism of diclofenac as a model anti‐inflammatory drug from these hydrogels were investigated. By controlling the feeding molar ratio of β‐CD/HA, a β‐CD substitution degree of 4.65% was obtained by 1H‐NMR analysis. The incorporation of β‐CD modification had little effect on the internal porous structure, water swelling ratio, and rheological property of HA hydrogel, which however were influenced by the crosslink density. Although the crosslink density had an influence on the drug loading and release profile by altering the water swelling property, the interaction between β‐CD and drug was the primary factor for the high loading capacity and long‐term sustained delivery of diclofenac. The semiempirical equation fit showed that the release of diclofenac from HA‐based hydrogels followed a pseudo‐Fickian diffusion mechanism. By the aid of β‐CD and controlled crosslink density, a β‐CD‐HA hydrogel with a diclofenac sustained delivery period of over 28 days and desirable physicochemical properties was achieved, which will be a promising drug sustained delivery carrier for wound healing. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐ and temperature‐responsive semi‐interpenetrating nanocomposite hydrogels (NC hydrogels) were prepared with surface‐functionalized graphene oxide (GO) as the crosslinker, N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the monomer, and chitosan (CS) as an additive. The effects of 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate‐modified GO sheets and CS content on various physical properties were investigated. Results show that PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels undergo a large volumetric change in response to temperature. Swelling ratios of PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels are much larger than those of the conventional organically crosslinked PNIPAM hydrogels. The deswelling test indicates that the deswelling rate was greatly enhanced by incorporating CS into the hydrogel network and using the surface‐functionalized GO as the crosslinker. The pH‐sensitivity of PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels is evident below their volume phase transition temperature. Moreover, the PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels have a much better mechanical property compared with traditional hydrogels even in a high water content of 90%. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Collagen‐based hydrogels have gained significant popularity in biomedical applications; however, traditional collagen hydrogels are easily disabled for lack of self‐healing properties due to their non‐reversible bonds. Here, a self‐healing collagen‐based hydrogel has been developed based on dynamic network chemistry, consisting of dynamic imine linkages between collagen and dialdehyde guar gum, as well as diol‐borate ester bonds between guar gum and borax. In addition, macromolecular interactions amongst macromolecules are involved. The above‐mentioned interactions were validated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and DSC. The as‐prepared collagen‐based hydrogels showed good injectability and rapid self‐healing capacity (within 3 min) as reflected from injection tests, optical microscope observations, rheological measurements, as well as self‐healing studies. In addition, the collagen‐based hydrogels showed accelerated wound‐healing properties. This study offers a facile strategy to endow self‐healing ability on collagen‐based hydrogels without any external stimulus, which show great application potential as wound dressings. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The application of traditional chemically crosslinked hydrogels is often limited by poor mechanical properties because of their own inhomogeneous network and irreversible crosslinking bonds. Herein, physical interactions are applied to crosslink the interpenetrating network hydrogel, i.e., hydrogen bonding and crystalline domain for polyvinyl alcohol network, and hydrophobic interaction inside micelle for poly (acrylamide‐co‐stearyl methyl acrylate) [P(AAm‐co‐SMA)] network. In this gel network system, reversible energy dissipation mechanism is realized by dissociation and reassociation of weak interactions including hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction inside the micelle. Strong crystalline domains serve as permanent crosslinking interactions to maintain network integrity under large extension. As a result, the synergy of weak and strong interactions leads to tough, antifatigue, fast recovery, and self‐healing properties of the hydrogel. This proposed strategy of achieving versatile hydrogels can broaden the use of hydrogels into load‐bearing applications.  相似文献

Utilization of bionics to develop stimuli responsive polymers that can heal damage with excellent restorability is particularly attractive for a sustainable society. Herein, inspired by chameleons, a hierarchical structural design strategy is proposed and illustrated to fabricate a healable photochromic material based on a self‐healable polymeric matrix and a finely dispersed photochromic spirooxazine. The self‐healable polymeric matrix is fabricated via the integration of multiple hydrogen bonds (H bonds) and covalent cross‐links into a biomass‐derived elastomer. The dynamic nature and soft characteristics enable the as‐prepared elastomer superior extensibility as well as self‐healing ability, while the covalent cross‐links can assist the reassociation of ruptured H bonds. The representative elastomer exhibits an extensibility of 2600% and toughness of 42.76 MJ m?3. Furthermore, it shows good self‐healing ability with complete recovery of scratch as well as restoration against 1900% of elongation and 24.1 MJ m?3 of toughness after healing at 60 °C for 24 h. This combination of moderate toughness, good self‐healing ability, and smart photochromic property in biomass‐derived materials should largely improve their applicability, reliability, and sustainability in various materials and devices.  相似文献

Despite recent significant progress in fabricating tough hydrogels, it is still a challenge to realize high strength, large stretchability, high toughness, rapid recoverability, and good self‐healing simultaneously in a single hydrogel. Herein, Laponite reinforced self‐cross‐linking poly(N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (PHEAA) hydrogels (i.e., PHEAA/Laponite nanocomposite [NC] gels) with dual physically cross‐linked network structures, where PHEAA chains can be self‐cross‐linked by themselves and also cross‐linked by Laponite nanoplatelets, demonstrate integrated high performances. At optimal conditions, PHEAA/Laponite NC gels exhibit high tensile strength of 1.31 MPa, ultrahigh tensile strain of 52.23 mm mm?1, high toughness of 2238 J m?2, rapid self‐recoverability (toughness recovery of 79% and stiffness recovery of 74% at room temperature for 2 min recovery without any external stimuli), and good self‐healing properties (strain healing efficiency of 42%). The work provides a promising and simple strategy for the fabrication of dual physically cross‐linked NC gels with integrated high performances, and helps to expand the fundamentals and applications of NC gels.  相似文献

Self‐healable hydrogels are promising soft materials with great potential in biomedical applications due to their autonomous self‐repairing capability. Although many attempts are made to develop new hydrogels with good self‐healing performance, to integrate this characteristic along with other responsive multifunctions into one hydrogel still remains difficult. Here, a self‐healable hybrid supramolecular hydrogel (HSH) with tunable bioadhesive and stimuli‐responsive properties is reported. The strategy is imparting graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and quadruple hydrogen bonding ureido‐pyrimidinone (UPy) moieties into a thermoresponsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) polymer matrix. The obtained GO–HSH hydrogel shows rapid self‐healing behavior and good adhesion to various surfaces from synthetic materials to biological tissue. In addition, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) release profiles reveal the dual thermo‐ and pH‐responsiveness of the GO–HSH hydrogel. The DOX‐loaded hydrogel can further directly adhere to titanium substrate, and the released DOX from this thin hydrogel coating remains biologically active and has high capability to kill tumor cells.  相似文献

A novel, physically stabilized hydrogel system composed of chitosan (Chi) or its derivatives [e.g., carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), sodium carboxymethyl chitosan, or trimethyl carboxymethyl chitosan (TMCMC)] with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) or opened‐ring poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (OR–PVP) were prepared and characterized. TMCMC was synthesized by a novel method with dimethylsulfate as the methylation agent. The synthesized materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, and size exclusion chromatography. The mechanical properties, gel fraction, swelling behavior, and water state of the prepared hydrogels were investigated. Gelation occurred when the OR–PVP and Chi solutions were blended within a few seconds. However, the gelation of the OR–PVP and CMC solutions needed pH adjustment. No gelation occurred when the solutions of TMCMC and PVP or OR–PVP were blended. The quaternization or protonization of  NH2 groups may have prevented the gelation of the solutions. The amino groups of Chi derivatives should have been free to take part in hydrophilic bonds between the two polymers. The physical entanglement of polymeric chains and strong hydrogen bonds between the polymers were considered as mechanisms for the formation of the physical hydrogels. The physical hydrogels showed ionic and pH‐sensitive swelling properties. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Hydrogels with good mechanical and self‐healing properties are of great importance for various applications. Poly(acrylic acid)–Fe3+/gelatin/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PAA‐Fe3+/Gelatin/PVA) triple‐network supramolecular hydrogels were synthesized by a simple one‐pot method of copolymerization, cooling and freezing/thawing. The PAA‐Fe3+/Gelatin/PVA triple‐network hydrogels exhibit superior toughness, strength and recovery capacity compared to single‐ and double‐network hydrogels. The mechanical properties of the synthesized hydrogels could be tailored by adjusting the compositions. The PAA‐Fe3+/Gelatin/PVA triple‐network hydrogel with 0.20 mmol Fe3+, 3% gelatin and 15% PVA could achieve good mechanical properties, the tensile strength and elongation at break being 239.6 kPa and 12.8 mm mm?1, respectively, and the compression strength reaching 16.7 MPa under a deformation of about 91.5%. The synthesized PAA‐Fe3+/Gelatin/PVA triple‐network hydrogels have good self‐healing properties owing to metal coordination between Fe3+ and carboxylic groups, hydrogen bonding between the gelatin chains and hydrogen bonding between the PVA chains. Healed PAA‐Fe3+(0.20)/Gelatin3%/PVA15% triple‐network hydrogels sustain a tensile strength of up to 231.4 kPa, which is around 96.6% of the tensile strength of the original samples. Therefore, the synthesized triple‐network supramolecular hydrogels would provide a new strategy for gel research and expand the potential for their application. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) and fully interpenetrating polymer network (full‐IPN) hydrogels composed of alginate and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) were prepared with γ‐ray irradiation. The semi‐IPN hydrogels were prepared through the irradiation of a mixed solution composed of alginate and N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer to simultaneously achieve the polymerization and self‐crosslinking of NIPAAm. The full‐IPN hydrogels were formed through the immersion of the semi‐IPN film in a calcium‐ion solution. The results for the swelling and deswelling behaviors showed that the swelling ratio of semi‐IPN hydrogels was higher than that of full‐IPN hydrogels. A semi‐IPN hydrogel containing more alginate exhibited relatively rapid swelling and deswelling rates, whereas a full‐IPN hydrogel showed an adverse tendency. All the hydrogels with NIPAAm exhibited a change in the swelling ratio around 30–40°C, and full‐IPN hydrogels showed more sensitive and reversible behavior than semi‐IPN hydrogels under a stepwise stimulus. In addition, the swelling ratio of the hydrogels continuously increased with the pH values, and the swelling processes were proven to be repeatable with pH changes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tough hydrogels receive continuous attention because of their promising applications in many fields. Herein, tough hydrogels of poly (N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAA)/alginate (SA) are prepared, with interpenetrating network (IPN) and of PDMAA/chitosan (CS) with semi‐IPN microstructure, respectively. The toughening of the hydrogel by incorporating natural polymers is studied by compressing tests and dynamic mechanical analyses. Moreover, cyclic load–unload compressing of the two types of hydrogels are performed at low strains and under relatively high strains, in order to compare their strength and anti‐fatigue properties. The results indicate that the mechanical strength can be markedly improved upon addition of the natural polymers, and the IPN hydrogel of PDMAA/SA reveals much higher mechanical performances but is less stable. However, the semi‐IPN hydrogel of PDMAA/CS displays excellent anti‐fatigue stability, but with relatively low strength. Swelling tests, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are carried out to study the microstructures of the hydrogels, which are carefully analyzed to understand the difference in mechanical performances of those hydrogels. The results suggest that the presence of sacrificial unit and higher chain density in the IPN are helpful for toughening hydrogels, while the semi‐IPN network is beneficial to improve the energy dissipation efficiency.  相似文献

Supramolecular hydrogel is a fascinating polymeric material composed of three‐dimensional noncovalent networks with many outstanding properties, especially reversible relevant performances. A self‐healing supramolecular hydrogel of poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphite oxide, with reversible pH responsiveness and good thermal stability, was prepared. The morphology, functional group changes, swelling performance, thermal stability, rheological performance, and self‐healing property of the PVA/GO hydrogel were investigated. A probable mechanism between the components and potential applications were also examined in our study. The experimental results show that the PVA/GO hydrogel was not only self‐healable without external stimulus or addition of any healing agents, but also pH sensitive and with good thermal stability. Green ingredients (PVA and GO) and a simple synthesis method (a freezing/thawing treatment) may pose little threat to the environment and also promote the production of such hydrogels. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crosslinked self‐healing polyurethane/urea based on a Diels–Alder reaction (C‐PMPU–DA) was synthesized from a multiple‐furan monomer and a commercial bismaleimide. The multiple‐furan monomer (PMPU–furan) was obtained from a functionalized prepolymer (polymeric MDI: PBA‐2000 = 2:1) by furfuryl amine. The structures of both the PMPU–furan and C‐PMPU–DA were characterized by attenuated total reflectance (ATR)–Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and 1H‐NMR. The Diels–Alder bonds enabled C‐PMPU–DA thermal reversibility, which was investigated by ATR–FTIR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, gel–solution–gel experiments, and viscosity tests. Meanwhile, the self‐healing properties of C‐PMPU–DA were also investigated by the recovery of the mechanical properties. The results showed that C‐PMPU–DA exhibited good thermal reversibility and self‐healing properties. C‐PMPU–DA exhibited thermosetting properties at room temperature, although it exhibited thermoplastic properties at higher temperatures and may find applications in self‐healing materials, recyclable materials, or removable materials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogels have been widely used as mild biomaterials due to their bio‐affinity, high drug loading capability and controllable release profiles. However, hydrogel‐based carriers are greatly limited for the delivery of hydrophobic payloads due to the lack of hydrophobic binding sites. Herein, nano‐liposome micelles were embedded in semi‐interpenetrating poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐chitosan] (PNIPAAm‐co‐CS) and poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐(sodium alginate)] (PNIPAAm‐co‐SA) hydrogels which were responsive to both temperature and pH, thereby establishing tunable nanocomposite hydrogel delivery systems. Nano‐micelles formed via the self‐assembly of phospholipid could serve as the link between hydrophobic drug and hydrophilic hydrogel due to their special amphiphilic structure. The results of transmission and scanning electron microscopies and infrared spectroscopy showed that the porous hydrogels were successfully fabricated and the liposomes encapsulated with baicalein could be well contained in the network. In addition, the experimental results of response release in vitro revealed that the smart hydrogels showed different degree of sensitiveness under different pH and temperature stimuli. The results of the study demonstrate that combining PNIPAAm‐co‐SA and PNIPAAm‐co‐CS hydrogels with liposomes encapsulated with hydrophobic drugs is a feasible method for hydrophobic drug delivery and have potential application prospects in the medical field. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A novel type of physical hydrogel based on dual‐crosslinked strategy is successfully synthesized by micellar copolymerization of stearyl methacrylate, acrylamide, and acrylic acid, and subsequent introduction of Fe3+. Strong hydrophobic associations among poly(stearyl methacrylate) blocks form the first crosslinking point and ionic coordination bonds between carboxyl groups and Fe3+ serve as the second crosslinking point. The mechanical properties of the hydrogel can be tuned in a wide range by controlling the densities of two crosslinks. The optimal hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of ≈6.8 MPa, elastic modulus of ≈8.0 MPa, elongation of ≈1000%, toughness of 53 MJ m?3) and good self‐recovery property. Furthermore, owing to stimuli responsiveness of physical interaction, this hydrogel also shows a triple shape memory effect. The combination of two different physical interactions in a single network provides a general strategy for designing of high‐strength hydrogels with functionalities.  相似文献

The Diels–Alder (DA) reaction is particularly desirable for the preparation of heat‐stimuli self‐healing polymeric materials because of its thermal reversibility, high yield, and minimal side reactions. Some attempts were conducted to synthesize polyether–maleimide‐based crosslinked self‐healing polyurethane with DA bonds (C‐PEMIPU–DA) through the reactions of the prepolymer (polymeric MDI/PBA‐1000) functionalized by furfuryl amine and polyether–maleimide without benzene in this study. The structures of intermediates and C‐PEMIPU–DA were first confirmed by 1H‐NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Next, the thermal reversibility and the self‐healing performance of C‐PEMIPU–DA were studied by 1H‐NMR, polarizing optical microscopy, tensile testing, and a sol–gel process. The results show that C‐PEMIPU–DA exhibited interesting properties of thermal reversibility and self‐healing. The polymers could be applied to self‐healing materials or recyclable materials in the fields of the repair of composite structures and aging parts because of their thermosetting properties at room temperature and thermoplasticity at higher temperatures. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simple, multiple‐hydrogen‐bond approach to fabricating physically crosslinked, Amylopectin reinforced polyacrylamide/poly(vinyl alcohol) (Amy/PAAm/PVA) double‐network (DN) hydrogels with super toughness in bulk and at solid interfaces is reported. The Amy/PAAm/PVA DN hydrogels exhibit high tensile strength (854.1 kPa), high extensibility (≈eight times), high bulk toughness (4094.8 kJ m?3), good self‐recovery property (≈92% of self‐recovery at room temperature), and strong adhesion to nonporous glass surfaces (≈158 kPa). Such tough and adhesive DN hydrogels have great potential for various applications in engineering artificial soft tissues, flexible electronics, and wearable devices.  相似文献

Chitosan (CS) grafted poly[(acrylic acid)‐co‐(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] (CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)) at different molar ratios of AA and HEMA, and the associated nanocomposite hydrogels of CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)/mica were synthesized by radical copolymerization. The grafting positions at the amino or hydroxyl groups in the CS were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA) hydrogels were intercalated in the mica and the amount of hydrogel insertion did not affect the spacing of the silicate layers in mica. The higher mica loadings produced a rougher surface of the nanocomposite hydrogel. The water absorbency of the CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)/mica nanocomposite hydrogels decreased with increasing levels of mica loading to a lower level than those of the CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA) hydrogels. Both CS‐g‐poly(AA) and CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)/mica nanocomposite hydrogels exhibited a higher antiproliferative activity against Staphylococcus aureus than did the neat CS hydrogel with CS‐g‐poly(AA) revealing a very pronounced minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 1.56 mg mL?1. The extent of mica loading in the CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA) nanocomposite hydrogels did not affect the MIC (12.5 mg mL?1). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献
