“Light is a unifying symbol that signifies wisdom and excites the imagination across the world,” so said Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General, the United Nations, at the opening ceremony of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, in Paris, January 19th, 2015. The goal of this world-wide endeavor is to expand cooperation, increase awareness, and promote our understanding of the importance of light in virtually all branches of science and modern society. The cover of this issue is the official logo for this endeavor; it is reproduced here with permission. This cover also introduces the theme of this special issue of the International Journal of Applied Glass Science: “Glass and Light.”

Crack growth in sintering films constrained by a substrate, simulated using discrete element method. The simulations show the importance of inter‐particle sliding resistance in controlling defect formation and growth in constrained films. This may explain the experimentally observed differences in defect formation in constrained sintered films of different materials. Additional details in Figure 19 in the Feature article in this issue. Originally published in: C. L. Martin, H. Camacho‐Montes, L. Olmos, D. Bouvard, and R. K. Bordia, “Evolution of Defects During Sintering: Discrete Element Simulations”, J. Am. Ceram. Soc., 92 [7] 1435–41 (2009).

The cover figure for this issue shows LED's in conjunction with CdSe quantum dots (QD) embedded in glasses and their CIE color coordinates which varied with heat treatment conditions employed for QD formation. Color conversion by CdSeQD's embedded in silicate glasses is thus demonstrated. More discussion on this experimental result can be found in reference to Fig. 5 found in “CdS and CdSe Quantum Dot Embedded Silicate Glasses for LED Color Converter,” this issue, authored by Karam Han, Sukeun Yoon and Woon Jin Chung. Karam Han created this figure.
