Polypropylene (PP) and polypropylene/polypropylene‐g‐maleic anhydride/ organomontmorillonite (PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT) nanocomposites were modified with 0.05 to 0.3% (w/w) of the aryl amide β‐nucleator to promote the formation of hexagonal crystal modification (β‐phase) during melt crystallization. The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of PP, PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT and β‐nucleated PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT nanocomposites were studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry. Structure‐property relationships of the PP nanocomposites prepared by melt compounding were mainly focused on the effect and quantity of the aryl amide nucleator. The morphological observations, obtained from scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction analyses are presented in conjunction with the thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of these nanocomposites. Chemical interactions in the nanocomposites were observed by FT‐IR. It was found that the β‐crystal modification affected the thermal and mechanical properties of PP and PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT nanocomposites, while the PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT nanocomposites of the study gained both a higher impact strength (50%) and flexural modulus (30%) compared to that of the neat PP. β‐nucleation of the PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT nanocomposites provided a slight reduction in density and some 207% improvement in the very low tensile elongation at break at 92% beta nucleation. The crystallization peak temperature (Tcp) of the PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT nanocomposite was slightly higher (116°C) than the neat PP (113°C), whereas the β‐nucleation increased the crystallization temperature of the PP/PP‐g‐MA/OMMT/aryl amide to 128°C, which is of great advantage in a commercial‐scale mold processing of the nanocomposites with the resulting lower cycle times. The beta nucleation of PP nanocomposites can thus be optimized to obtain a better balance between thermal and mechanical properties. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011.  相似文献

A new toughened polypropylene (PP)/organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposite was obtained by melt intercalation extrusion in a twin‐screw extruder without any compatibilizer. The nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation, melt flow rate (MFR) testing, mechanical properties measurement, melting and crystallization behaviors, and thermal stability determination. TEM images revealed the existence of intercalated OMMT layers dispersed throughout the PP matrix. A clear reduction in MFR was observed as the OMMT content increased. The yield strength, elongation at yield, and initial modulus of the PP/OMMT nanocomposites increased slightly as the result of the reinforcement of the OMMT nanofiller. The ultimate value of notched impact strength of the nanocomposites was over twofold that of neat PP after incorporation with 4 wt % OMMT; meanwhile, the heat deflection temperature values showed that the thermal stability increased a little. This is a new approach for preparation for the production of a toughened PP material with a high thermal stability and rigidity. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

The mechanical properties and morphologies of PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites have been studied using mechanical testing, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties of neat polypropylene can be considerably improved by synergistically filling with SiO2 and SBR nanoparticles, especially for the notched Izod impact strength. The results from the WAXD, POM, SEM, DSC, and TGA measurements reveal that: (i) the β‐phase crystal structure of PP is formed when SiO2 and SBR nanoparticles are synergistically filled with polypropylene and its formation plays a role for the enhancement of the impact strength for PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites; (ii) the dispersion of SiO2 and SBR nanoparticles in PP/SBR/SiO2 composites is homogeneous, indicating that synergistic incorporating method decreases the aggregation of nanoparticles and thus increases the sites for dissipation of shock for impact energy in PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites; (iii) the thermal analysis shows high thermal stability for the PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The water absorption and hygrothermal aging behavior of organomontmorillonite (OMMT) reinforced polyamide 6/polypropylene (PA6/PP ratio = 70/30), with and without maleated PP (MAH‐g‐PP), was studied at three different temperatures (30, 60, and 90°C). The water absorption and hygrothermal aging response of the composites was studied and analyzed by tensile tests and morphology assessment (scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy), indicating the effect of the immersion temperature, OMMT, and MAH‐g‐PP compatibilizer. The mathematical treatment used in analyzing the data was the single free phase model of diffusion, which assumed Fickian diffusion and utilized Fick's second law of diffusion. The kinetics of water absorption of the PA6/PP nanocomposites conformed to Fickian law behavior, whereby the initial moisture absorption follows a linear relationship between the percentage gain at any time t and t1/2 (the square root of time), followed by saturation. It was found that the equilibrium moisture content and the diffusion coefficient are dependent on the OMMT loading, MAH‐g‐PP concentration, and immersion temperatures. Both the tensile modulus and strength of the PA6/PP nanocomposites deteriorated after being exposed to hygrothermal aging. MAH‐g‐PP acted as a good compatibilizer for PA6/PP/OMMT nanocomposites, which was attributed to its higher retention ability in modulus and strength (in the wet and redried states), lower equilibrium moisture content, and reduced water diffusivity of the nanocomposites. Morphological sketches for both uncompatibilized and MAH‐g‐PP compatibilized PA6/PP/OMMT nanocomposites, toward water uptake are proposed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present investigation, nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP)‐montmorillonite (MMT) clay were prepared by a single‐step compounding method to study the influence of hyperbranched polyester (HBPE) on rheological and mechanical properties of PP composites in the presence of a compatibilizer. In service of this objective, polyvinylchloride‐grafted‐maleic anhydride (PP‐g‐MA) was used as a compatibilizer for hydrophobic PP and hydrophilic clay. Rheological property in terms of melt viscosity was examined by a Brabender torque rheometer. The composite's morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), whereas the dispersion state of nanoparticles in the PP matrix was studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal behavior of nanocomposites was examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The analysis of results confirmed that the interactions among both additives significantly influenced the morphology, rheology, and thermomechanical properties of the nanocomposites. J. VINYL ADDIT. Effects of nanoparticle surface treatment on the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/CaCO3 nanocomposites were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscope (POM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrated that the interfacial interaction formed between PP and nanoparticles significantly influenced the thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites. It was found that CaCO3 nanoparticles modified by a single aluminate coupling agent (CA‐1) could improve the onset crystallization temperature more effectively than that modified by a compound surface‐treating agent (CA‐2) could. However, there is no significant difference in total rate of crystallization for the two PP/CaCO3 nanocomposites (PPC‐1 and PPC‐2), which contained CA‐1 and CA‐2, respectively. In contrast, CA‐2 modified nanoparticles could cause smaller spherulites and induce much more β‐phase crystal in nanocomposites than that of CA‐1 modified nanoparticles. This may be explained by a synergistic effect of aluminate coupling agent and stearic acid in CA‐2, which also resulted in an improved toughness for PPC‐2. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The microstructure and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/OMMT binary nanocomposites and PP/styrene‐6‐(ethylene‐co‐butylenes)‐6‐styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS)/OMMT ternary nanocomposites were investigated using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and rheology and electromechanical testing machine. The results show that the organoclay layers are mainly intercalated and partially exfoliated in the PP‐based nanocomposites. The additions of SEBS and OMMT have no significant effect on the crystallization behavior of PP. At the same time, it can be concluded that the polymer chains of PP and SEBS have intercalated into the organoclay layers and increase the gallery distance after blending process based on the analytical results from TEM, XRD, and rheology, which result in the form of a percolated nanostructure in the PP‐based nanocomposites. The results of mechanical properties show that SEBS filler greatly improve the notched impact strength of PP, but with the sacrifice of strength and stiffness. OMMT can improve the strength and stiffness of PP and slightly enhance the notched impact strength of PP/PP‐g‐MA. In comparison with neat PP, PP/OMMT, and PP/SEBS binary composites, notched impact toughness of the PP/SEBS/OMMT ternary composites significantly increase. Moreover, the stiffness and strength of PP/SEBS/OMMT ternary nanocomposites are slightly enhanced when compared with neat PP. It is believed that the synergistic effect of both SEBS elastomer and OMMT nanoparticles account for the balanced mechanical performance of the ternary nanocomposites. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanical and thermomechanical properties as well as microstructures of polypropylene/nylon 6/clay nanocomposites prepared by varying the loading of PP‐MA compatibilizer and organoclay (OMMT) were investigated. The compatibilizer PP‐MA was used to improve the adhesion between the phases of polymers and the dispersion of OMMT in polymer matrix. Improvement of interfacial adhesion between the PP and PA6 phases occurred after the addition of PP‐MA as confirmed by SEM micrographs. Moreover, as shown by the DSC thermograms and XRD results, the degree of crystallinity of PA6 decreased in the presence of PP‐MA. The presence of OMMT increased the tensile modulus as a function of OMMT loading due to the good dispersion of OMMT in the matrix. The insertion of polymer chains between clay platelets was verified by both XRD and TEM techniques. The viscosity of the nanocomposites decreased as PP‐MA loading increased due to the change in sizes of PA6 dispersed phase, and the viscosity increased as OMMT loading increased due to the interaction between the clay platelets and polymer chains. The clay platelets were located at the interface between PP and PA6 as confirmed by both SEM and TEM. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

In this paper, polypropylene (PP)/organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites were successfully prepared without any compatibilizers by solid‐state shear compounding (S3C) using pan‐mill equipment. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the OMMT characteristic (001) peak at 2θ equal to 4.59 degrees disappeared for the milled OMMT and corresponding composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) photographs show that the thickness of pan‐milled OMMT decreased from ca 100–200 nm to ca 30–50 nm, and OMMT was partly exfoliated in the PP matrix because the pan‐type mill can exert fairly strong squeezing force in the normal direction and shearing force in both radial and tangential directions on milled materials. PP/OMMT nanocomposites at low OMMT loading have higher melting point, crystallization temperature, thermal degradation temperature and heat distortion temperature than those of neat PP. Moreover, addition of OMMT accelerates crystallization of PP significantly. S3C is a novel approach to prepare polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites with high performances at low filler loading. Films of polypropylene/organically modified montmorillonite (PP/OMMT) nanocomposites were drawn at two different temperatures with various draw ratios. The effect of OMMT on the orientations of the crystalline and amorphous phases was studied using polarized infrared spectroscopy. It is found that OMMT layers always retard the orientation of the crystalline phase. The higher the OMMT loading, the stronger the retardance effect. In contrast, the effect of OMMT layers on the orientation of the amorphous phase depends on draw temperature and OMMT loading. A favorable effect on the orientation of the amorphous phase is observed at low OMMT loading and high draw temperature, but the retardance prevails at high OMMT loading and low draw temperature. The favorable effect on orientation at high draw temperature is attributed to the stabilization effect of OMMT layers on the conformation of amorphous PP chains. Such an effect was further verified by comparing the crystallization behavior and the morphologies of drawn PP and PP/OMMT films crystallized from 180°C. Memory effect is observed for crystallization of drawn PP/OMMT film, but it is not obvious for the drawn film of neat PP. Spherulites are formed for orientated neat PP films cooled from 180°C, but cylindrites are still formed after the drawn PP/OMMT films undergo melting at 180°C and recrystallization. The stabilization effect disappears at higher temperature (230°C). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

The aim of the work is to extract, purify, and organically modify montmorillonite (MMT) of Lahad Datu, Sabah bentonite. The octadecylamine treated Sabah MMT (S‐OMMT) (2–8 wt%) was then melt blended with polypropylene (PP) and maleated polypropylene (PPgMAH) (10 wt%) via single screw nanomixer extruder followed by injection molding into test samples to examine the mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of PP/S‐OMMT nanocomposites. Unmodified Sabah MMT (S‐MMT) and commercial grade MMT (Nanomer 1.30P) filled PP nanocomposites were also characterized for comparison purpose. X‐ray diffraction results showed that the interlayer spacing of S‐MMT increased after organic modification as Fourier transform infra‐red and elemental analysis evidenced the presence of octadecylamine. PP/S‐OMMT nanocomposites showed a better dispersion and strength compared to PP/Nanomer 1.30P nanocomposites due to its smaller MMT platelet size. differential scanning calorimetry and Thermogravimetry analysis revealed that the thermal stability and crystallinity of neat PP improved with the addition of all types of MMT. Dynamic mechanical analyzer showed that PP nanocomposites have higher storage modulus (E′) values than the neat PP over the whole temperature range. The new PP/S‐OMMT nanocomposites showed a comparable performance with PP/Nanomer 1.30P nanocomposites exhibiting promising future applications of S‐MMT in polymer/MMT nanocomposites. POLYM. Hollow glass beads (HGB) were mixed into isotactic polypropylene (iPP) by an internal mixer and the effect of HGB concentration on optical, rheological, and thermal properties of iPP/HGB composites was studied. The dispersion of treated and nontreated HGB in the iPP matrix and the crystal habit of iPP in the composites were examined by phase contrast microscopy. Dynamic rheological measurements were carried out in the melt state in the oscillatory shear mode. The data were analyzed to yield the variations of rheological properties of the composites when the HGB were added. The influence of HGB concentration on the thermal properties including the crystallization and melting behaviors of the composites was studied by means of differential scanning calorimeter and wide angle X‐ray diffraction. It was found that the addition of HGB had effect on the crystallization and melting behaviors of the composites, including that HGB had a weak nucleating effect in the matrix and promoting the formation of β‐crystals of iPP. The crystallization structures of Polypropylene (PP) injection‐molded bars nucleated by nucleating agent were detected from the skin layer to the core zone, layer by layer. α‐phase nucleating agent 1,3:2,4‐bis (3,4‐dimethylbenzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS, Millad 3988), β‐phase nucleating agent aryl amides compounds (TMB‐5), and their compounds were introduced into PP matrix, respectively. The relative content of β‐phase PP in the different zones of an injection‐molded bar was characterized and calculated by Wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that, whether in pure PP or in nucleated PP, both β‐phase PP and α‐phase PP grow in the skin layer of the injection‐molded bar. However, in the intermediate layers and the core zone, the crystallization structures of PP are dependent on the used nucleating agent. β‐phase is the main crystallization structure of TMB‐5 (0.1 and 0.2 wt%) nucleated PP, and α‐phase in DMDBS (0.1 and 0.2 wt%) nucleated PP. Compounding nucleating agents with 0.1 wt% DMDBS and 0.1 wt% TMB‐5 induces PP crystallization almost in β‐phase; however, PP nucleated by 0.2 wt% DMDBS and 0.2 wt% TMB‐5 crystallizes exclusively in α‐phase. The crystallization mechanism of PP nucleated by compounding nucleating agents was further studied in this work. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2008. © 2008 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

In this study, Ca2+‐montmorillonite (Ca2+‐MMT) and organo‐montmorillonite (OMMT) were modified by three compatibilizers with different degrees of polarity [poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), alkyl‐PEG, and polypropylene (PP)‐g‐PEG]. PP/MMT nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending and characterized using X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed the degree of dispersion of OMMT in the PP/PP‐g‐PEG/OMMT (PMOM) nanocomposite was considerably higher than those in the PP/PEG/OMMT and PP/alkyl‐PEG/OMMT nanocomposites, which indicated that the dispersion was relative to the compatibility between modified OMMT and PP matrix. Linear viscoelasticity of PP/MMT nanocomposites in melt states was investigated by small amplitude dynamic rheology measurements. With the addition of the modified MMT, the shear viscosities and storage modulus of all the PP/MMT nanocomposites decreased. It can be attributed to the plasticization effect of PEG segments in the three modifiers. This rheological behavior was different from most surfactant modified MMT nanocomposites which typically showed an increase in dynamic modulus and viscosity relative to the polymer matrix. The unusual rheological observations were explained in terms of the compatibility between the polymer matrix and MMT. In addition, the mechanical properties of PP/MMT nanocomposites were improved. A simultaneous increase in the tensile strength and toughness was observed in PP/PMOM nanocomposites. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

Polypropylene/montmorillonite nanocomposites (PPCNs) with 3% organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) content were prepared via ultrasonic extrusion. The objective of present study was to investigate the effects of ultrasonic oscillations in processing on the morphology and property development of PPCNs. XRD and TEM results confirmed the intercalated structure of OMMT in conventional nanocomposite (without ultrasonic treatment) and ultrasonicated nanocomposite, but ultrasonic oscillations could make silicate layers finely dispersed and a little exfoliated. According to SEM, the OMMT particles were evenly and finely dispersed in the ultrasonicated nanocomposite via ultrasonic oscillations, and the aggregation size of clay particles was about 100 nm, which is less than that in conventional nanocomposite. The crystalline dimension, crystalline morphology and the growth rate of crystallization in PPCNs were investigated by DSC and PLM, it was found that the OMMT particles and ultrasonic oscillations played an important role in the nucleation rate, crystallization temperature and spherulite size of PP matrix in nanocomposites. Compared with conventional nanocomposite, the mechanical properties of the ultrasonicated nanocomposite increased due to the improved dispersion of OMMT and diminished spherulite size. The thermal stability and the rheological behavior of PP and its nanocomposites were both studied by thermogravimetry and high pressure rheometer, respectively.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP)/organomontmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites have been successfully prepared by melt intercalation by using the conventional method of twin‐screw extrusion and subsequently submitted for melt‐spinning. The structure and properties of the PP/clay nanocomposites and hybrid fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and crystallization dynamics, etc. The organoclay layers were found to disperse in the PP resin at the nanometer level. The nanoscaled OMMT layers, dispersed in the PP matrix, actually played the role of heterogeneous nuclei species in the process of PP crystallization and increased the nucleation speed of the composites, hereby leading to the increase of crystallization rate of the as‐spun fiber. Meanwhile, it was found that the crystallinity of PP/OMMT hybrid fibers is much higher than that of pure PP fiber at the same draw ratios, whereas the orientation of PP/OMMT hybrid fibers is much lower than that of pure PP fiber at the same draw ratios. Because of the effective intercalation of OMMT into PP matrix, the nanocomposites have good spinnability, and the moisture absorption of the final PP fiber is improved. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, immiscible polypropylene/poly(butylene succinate) (PP/PBS) blend-based nanocomposites were successfully prepared using an internal mixer. Carbon nanotube (CNT)/organo-montmorillonite (15A) and maleated PP (PPgMA) served as the reinforcing nanofillers and compatibilizer, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that PPgMA played an efficient role as compatibilizer for reducing the dispersed domain size of PBS in the blend. The added CNT was randomly distributed within the PP and PBS phases, whereas 15A was selectively located in the PBS domain. Differential scanning calorimetry results confirmed the nucleation effect of CNT on the PP/PBS crystallization, but 15A addition only facilitated the PBS crystallization. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that CNT and 15A both enhanced the thermal stability of the blend under air environment. The rheological property measurements confirmed the significant change in microstructure of composites through developing the pseudo-network structure with CNT and/or 15A additions. The Young’s modulus (YM) of PP/PBS blend increased evidently with the inclusion of CNT. The incorporation of 2.5 phr CNT evidently increased the YM by approximately 243% compared with that of neat PBS. The electrical resistivity of the samples drastically reduced with the addition of CNT up to 10 orders of drop at a 3-phr CNT loading. The electrical percolation was constructed at a CNT content of 0.5 phr.  相似文献

This work deals with the effect of compatibilizer on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of polypropylene/polycarbonate (PP/ PC) blends. The blends, containing between 0 to 30 vol % of polycarbonate and a compatibilizer, were prepared by means of a twin-screw extruder. The compatibilizer was produced by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene in the molten state. Blend morphologies were controlled by adding PP-g-GMA as compatibilizer during melt processing, thus changing dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the polycarbonate phase. With PP-g-GMA, volume fractions increased from 2.5 to 20, and much finer dispersions of discrete polycarbonate phase with average domain sizes decreased from 35 to 3 μm were obtained. The WAXD spectra showed that the crystal structure of neat PP was different from that in blends. The DSC results suggested that the degree of crystallization of PP in blends decreased as PC content and compatibilizer increased. The mechanical properties significantly changed after addition of PP-g-GMA. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 63: 1857–1863, 1997  相似文献

Isocyanate‐ and amine‐functionalized polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) were prepared through grafting and copolymerization method. These compounds are used as precursors for PP‐graft‐PS (PP‐g‐PS) copolymers and reacted at the matrix interface of PP/PS blends. Functionalized polymer structures were characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The effects of the synthesized compatibilizer on the rheological and morphological behavior of PP/PS blends were investigated systematically. Results showed that the functional polymer was successfully synthesized, and the additional two different compatibilizer systems dramatically decreased the size of the dispersed phase domains in PP/PS blends. Compared with the uncompatibilized blends, compatibilized blends exhibited a slightly higher crystallization temperature because the melting points of the blend components were not evidently affected by the addition of compatibilizer, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry. The compatibilizer effect on the PP/PS blends was reflected through rheological property and dynamic mechanical analysis. POLYM. ENG. Nanocomposites containing polypropylene (PP), PET, and montmorillonite were prepared in a twin‐screw extruder. X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry were used to characterize the samples. Intercalated and exfoliated morphology were observed in the nanocomposites. The PET domains usually presented spherical shapes and they were the start point to PP crystallization. The average diameter and number of PET domains was evaluated. The influence of addition of PP‐MA as compatibilizer on PP/PET was investigated. The interconnected morphology was observed in the nanocomposite containing PP‐MA. The clay located predominantly in the interphase and in the PET phase. The crystallization process was monitored and the PET crystallization rate was slower in the nanocomposites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献
