Optical fibre connectors using a fused and drawn multi-glass-rod arrangement

New demountable single-fibre and multifibre connectors have been constructed whose plugs include a precision multi-glass-rod arrangement, made by drawing, for locating the fibres and aligning pairs of plugs. The single-fibre and 6-fibre connectors exhibit an average insertion loss of 0.2 dB with index matching and an average off-axis of 3.5 ?m. The connectors are potentially cost-effective and reliable.     

Moulded multifibre connectors using rectangular multirod arrangement

Moulded demountable compact multifibre connectors have been constructed which have a rectangular arrangement of precision rods within the plug mouldings to locate the fibres in its interstices and to align pairs of plugs. The samples of 10-fibre connector tested so far have exhibited average insertion loss of 0.37 dB for step-index fibre 60 ?m in core diameter. Connectors for an arbitrary number of fibres can be made from the same mould and parts by using this method.     

Moulded optical-fibre connectors using rods and balls

Moulded demountable single-fibre and compact multifibre connectors, which contain precision rods and balls within the plug mouldings to locate the fibres and to align pairs of plugs, have been constructed. The samples tested so far have exhibited insertion losses of less than 0.2 dB with index matching and off-axes of less than 3 ?m on average.     

碗形塞加工误差双目视觉在线检测方法

碗形塞主要用于堵塞发动机工艺孔,其加工精度高,直径尺寸公差要求在微米数量级。目前对碗形塞的加工误差检测主要还是人工检测方式,人工检测精度低且不能满足现代化生产的在线检测要求,因此提出利用双目视觉实现碗形塞加工误差在线检测的方法,将碗形塞放在一个旋转机构上匀速旋转,利用两台平行方向放置的摄像机采集碗形塞直径端面的多组图像,通过所提出的端面杂质去除方法校正检测结果,再通过数据处理获得碗形塞直径和锥度的加工误差。搭建了基于双目视觉的碗形塞加工误差在线检测系统并进行在线测试,测试结果表明该方法能够满足碗形塞的测量要求并实现在线检测。     

Low-loss optical-fibre connection systems

A new principle for preparing inexpensive high-accuracy plugs in the field using a precise reference-shape fixture is described. These plugs can be used to make optical-connection systems such as fibre-to-fibre connectors, distribution frames and multifibre connections with losses between 0.1 and 0.5 dB.

Relationship Between Spark Plugs and Engine-Radiated Electromagnetic Interference

The ignition system of any spark-ignited internal combustion engine-powered device is well recognized as a major source of radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI). Spark plus designs can be selected to aid in reducing ignition-related EMI. The effects of various spark plug designs such as resistor spark plugs, inductor spark plugs, and shielded spark plugs upon both EMI and ignition system performance are presented. In addition to studying the effect of spark plug design, the use of the SAE standard (J551b) and other EMI measurement techniques to determine effect of spark plug suppression designs are discussed. Generally, the addition of a resistor to the spark plug provides the most effective spark plug suppression. However, other designs may be effective as an addition to the resistor or as a substitute where resistors cannot be practically used.     

Design and performance of single-mode plug-in type optical-fiberconnectors

A new system of compact single-mode plug-in-type optical-fiber connectors is developed for multiple optical connections between a printed board and a back panel. This new system consists of two types of plug-in connectors: one has two optical plugs/jacks with 64 electrical terminals, and the other has four optical plugs/jacks without electrical terminals. This system utilizes a novel alignment mechanism for plugs and jacks and a novel fiber-core adjustment technology. The performance of assembled plug-in optical-fiber connectors was measured and confirmed to have the following characteristics: insertion losses are less than 0.4 dB and return losses are larger than 28 dB; mechanical tests such as mating, vibration, and shock, and environment tests such as temperature cycling, thermal aging, and high humidity with temperature cycling reveal extremely stable characteristics; and transmission tests using 1.8-Gb/s pseudorandom pulse patterns show low error rates of less than 10^-11

Consideration of chiral optical fibres

Circular birefringence is a property of chiral materials. In this work, we consider the use of chiral materials in optical fibres to produce circularly birefringent optical fibres and in fibres where a contrast in circular birefringence contributes to forming the waveguide. (-)-menthyl methacrylate is also investigated as a possible material for the fabrication of such fibres.     

Electrochemical mechanism of layout-dependent corrosion of tungsten in contact plugs

The investigation elucidates electrochemical effect on tungsten (W) contact plugs and proposes front-end-of-the-line semiconductor manufacture processes that are responsible for corrosion involving source/drain implants, rapid thermal anneal (RTA) and nickel silicide (Ni_xSi_x). W-filled contacts are commonly used in submicron and even nanometer CMOS technology, and the integrity of W contact plugs becomes increasingly critical as transistors continue to shrink. Incomplete W plugs with a recess on the tops of the contacts were observed in N+/n-well locations following W chemical mechanical polishing (WCMP). This phenomenon arises from anodic corrosion since the under-layer P+/p-well and N+/n-well form a PN junction structure, which has built-in potential and promotes the movement of photo-generated electrons during WCMP. The mechanism of the electrochemical effect is elucidated, and a series of experiments indicates a thin Ni_xSi_x layer, a heavy dosage of source/drain implants and a high RTA temperature promote the formation of corrosion defects.

Fluoride glass etching method for preparation of infra-red fibres with improved tensile strength

A method for the congruent dissolution of zirconium fluoride glass using an aqueous solution with zirconium ions as a complexing agent is described. Preform cleaning by this technique leads to IR fibres with mean tensile strength values as high as 400 MPa, which is an improvement by a factor of 2. The transmission loss of Teflon-jacketed fibres could be reduced by a factor of ten in comparison to fibres from untreated preforms.     

Low-loss multifibre connectors with plug-guide-grooved silicon

Low-loss interchangable multifibre connectors have been developed using plugs consisting of large guiding grooved and fibre-fixing V-grooved silicon chips. Guiding grooves etched on silicon chips accomplish extremely small average fibre offset less than 2 ?m. A 6-fibre connector plug pair selected from the same wafer exhibits 0.14 dB average connection loss. Connector plugs from different wafers exhibit 0.17 dB and 0.24 dB average connection losses.     

Recent progress in microstructured polymer optical fibre fabrication and characterisation

Recent progress in microstructured polymer optical fibre fabrication and characterisation will be presented. A wide range of different optical functionalities can now be obtained by modifications of the microstructure, as is demonstrated by the fibres presented here. Microstructured fibres that are single-mode, highly birefringent or show twin-core coupling are described, in addition to graded-index microstructured fibres and hollow core fibres, the latter case being where light is guided in an air core. Microstructured polymer optical fibres are an exciting new development, offering opportunities to develop fibres for a wide range of applications in telecommunications and optical sensing.
