On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) techniques are increasingly being used in decision support systems to provide analysis
of data. Queries posed on such systems are quite complex and require different views of data. Analytical models need to capture
the multidimensionality of the underlying data, a task for which multidimensional databases are well suited. Multidimensional
OLAP systems store data in multidimensional arrays on which analytical operations are performed. Knowledge discovery and data
mining requires complex operations on the underlying data which can be very expensive in terms of computation time. High performance
parallel systems can reduce this analysis time.
Precomputed aggregate calculations in a Data Cube can provide efficient query processing for OLAP applications. In this article,
we present algorithms for construction of data cubes on distributed-memory parallel computers. Data is loaded from a relational
database into a multidimensional array. We present two methods, sort-based and hash-based for loading the base cube and compare
their performances. Data cubes are used to perform consolidation queries used in roll-up operations using dimension hierarchies.
Finally, we show how data cubes are used for data mining using Attribute Focusing techniques. We present results for these
on the IBM-SP2 parallel machine. Results show that our algorithms and techniques for OLAP and data mining on parallel systems
are scalable to a large number of processors, providing a high performance platform for such applications. 相似文献

Modern processor architectures are increasingly complex and heterogeneous, often requiring software solutions tailored to the specific hardware characteristics of each processor model. In this article, we address this problem by targeting two processors featuring Simultaneous MultiThreading (SMT) to improve the occupancy of their internal execution units through a sustained stream of instructions coming from more than one thread. We target the AMD Bulldozer and IBM POWER7 processors as case studies for specific hardware-oriented performance optimizations that increase the variety of instructions sent to each core to maximize the occupancy of all its execution units. WorkOver, presented in this article, improves thread scheduling by increasing the performance of floating point-intensive workloads on Linux-based operating systems. WorkOver is a user-space monitoring tool that automatically identifies FPU-intensive threads and schedules them in a more efficient way without requiring any patches or modifications at the kernel level. Our measurements using standard benchmark suites show that speedups of up to 20% can be achieved by simply allowing WorkOver to monitor applications and schedule their threads, without any modification of the workload. 相似文献

A hybrid analytic and experimental approach to the analysis of large systems is described. The approach is iterative under the assumption that a correct analysis will not be made first time. It is primarily aimed at the analysis of the performance effect of proposed changes prior to coding them. The requirement is for a fairly approximate analysis that is easy to make. The approach is illustrated by an experiment on a relational database system but we believe it to be applicable to many kinds of large systems. The different reasons for analysing performance of a system are discussed and then the ways of approaching the analysis, with an outline of our approach. Data centers are growing exponentially (in number and size) to accommodate the escalating user and application demands. Likewise, the concerns about the environmental impacts, energy needs, and electricity cost of data centers are also growing. Network infrastructure being the communication backbone of the data center plays a pivotal role in the data center’s scalability, performance, energy consumption, and cost. Research community is endeavoring hard to overcome the challenges faced by the legacy Data Center Networks (DCNs). Serious efforts have been made to handle the problems in various DCN areas. This survey presents significant insights to the state-of-the-art research conducted pertaining to the DCN domain along with a detailed discussion of the energy efficiency aspects of the DCNs. The authors explored: (a) DCN architectures (electrical, optical, and hybrid), (b) network traffic management and characterization, (c) DCN performance monitoring, (d) network-aware resource allocation, (e) DCN experimentation techniques, and (f) energy efficiency.
