Electromyographic (EMG) recordings detected over the skin may be mixtures of signals generated by different active muscles due to the phenomena related to volume conduction. Separation of the sources is necessary when single muscle activity has to be detected. Signals generated by different muscles may be considered uncorrelated but in general overlap in time and frequency. Under certain assumptions, mixtures of surface EMG signals can be considered as linear instantaneous but no a priori information about the mixing matrix is available when different muscles are active. In this study, we applied blind source separation (BSS) methods to separate the signals generated by two active muscles during a force-varying task. As the signals are non stationary, an algorithm based on spatial time-frequency distributions was applied on simulated and experimental EMG signals. The experimental signals were collected from the flexor carpi radialis and the pronator teres muscles which could be activated selectively for wrist flexion and rotation, respectively. From the simulations, correlation coefficients between the reference and reconstructed sources were higher than 0.85 for signals largely overlapping both in time and frequency and for signal-to-noise ratios as low as 5 dB. The Choi-Williams and Bessel kernels, in this case, performed better than the Wigner-Ville one. Moreover, the selection of time-frequency points for the procedure of joint diagonalization used in the BSS algorithm significantly influenced the results. For the experimental signals, the interference of the other source in each reconstructed source was significantly attenuated by the application of the BSS method. The ratio between root-mean-square values of the signals from the two sources detected over one of the muscles increased from (mean +/- standard deviation) 2.33 +/- 1.04 to 4.51 +/- 1.37 and from 1.55 +/- 0.46 to 2.72 +/- 0.65 for wrist flexion and rotation, respectively. This increment was statistically significant. It was concluded that the BSS approach applied is promising for the separation of surface EMG signals, with applications ranging from muscle assessment to detection of muscle activation intervals, and to the control of myoelectric prostheses.  相似文献

Muscle fiber conduction velocity (CV) can be estimated by the application of a pair of spatial filters to surface electromagnetic (EMG) signals and compensation of the spatial filter transfer function with equivalent temporal filters. This method integrates the selection of the spatial filters for signal detection to the estimation of CV. Using this approach, in this paper, we propose a novel technique for signal-based selection of the spatial filter pair that minimizes the effect of nonpropagating signal components (end-of-fiber effects) on CV estimates (optimal filters). The technique is applicable to signals with one propagating and one nonpropagating component, such as single motor unit action potentials. It is shown that the determination of the optimal filters also allows the identification of the propagating and nonpropagating signal components. The new method was applied to simulated and experimental EMG signals. Simulated signals were generated by a cylindrical, layered volume conductor model. Experimental signals were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis with a linear array of 16 electrodes. In the simulations, the proposed approach provided CV estimates with lower bias due to nonpropagating signal components than previously proposed methods based on the entire signal waveform. In the experimental signals, the technique separated propagating and nonpropagating signal components with an average reconstruction error of 2.9 +/- 0.9% of the signal energy. The technique may find application in single motor unit studies for decreasing the variability and bias of CV estimates due to the presence and different weights of the nonpropagating components.  相似文献

In this communication, we present an on-line real-time simulation system used to evaluate a new method of controlling a multifunctional hand prosthesis. The system employs two computers. Acquisition, analysis, and classification of EMG signals are performed by a minicomputer, and the animation model of the hand prosthesis which is displayed on a monitor TV is controlled by a microcomputer. From three EMG signals picked up from the most suitable muscles of the forearm, three amplitude and three frequency components are derived. Six voluntary movements are then classified by the use of a pattern recognition technique based on the linear discriminant analysis method. Besides the six basic motions, the model can also make eight combined motions using the method of selecting control signals. The experimental results tested on healthy adults indicated that recognition rate was above 90 percent, and nearly 100 percent in some of the better cases. Then the subjects could easily operate the model on the TV screen.  相似文献

New recording techniques for detecting surface electromyographic (EMG) signals based on concentric-ring electrodes are proposed in this paper. A theoretical study of the two-dimensional (2-D) spatial transfer function of these recording systems is developed both in case of rings with a physical dimension and in case of line rings. Design criteria for the proposed systems are presented in relation to spatial selectivity. It is shown that, given the radii of the rings, the weights of the spatial filter can be selected in order to improve the rejection of low spatial frequencies, thus increasing spatial selectivity. The theoretical transfer functions of concentric systems are obtained and compared with those of other detection systems. Signals detected with the ring electrodes and with traditional one-dimensional and 2-D systems are compared. The concentric-ring systems show higher spatial selectivity with respect to the traditional detection systems and reduce the problem of electrode location since they are invariant to rotations. The results shown are very promising for the noninvasive detection of single motor unit (MU) activities and decomposition of the surface EMG signal into the constituent MU action potential trains.  相似文献

Spatial filtering, particularly common in the field of engineering, is adapted in theory and practice to the filtering of propagating spatial EMG signals. This technique offers a new flexibility in the design of selective EMG measurement configurations. Longitudinal as well as two-dimensional spatial filters can be used. The conditions for the design of suitable spatial filters are deduced by signal theory. The performances of different selected configurations are compared by means of a given simple model of an excited motor unit. Many spatial filters have been proposed for surface electromyographic (EMG) signal detection. Although theoretical and modeling predictions on spatial selectivity are available, there are no extensive experimental validations of these techniques based on single motor unit (MU) activity detection. The aim of this study was to compare spatial selectivity of one- and two-dimensional (1-D and 2-D) spatial filters for EMG signal detection. Intramuscular and surface EMG signals were recorded from the tibialis anterior muscle of ten subjects. The simultaneous use of intramuscular wire and surface recordings (with the spike triggered averaging technique) allowed investigation of the activity of single MUs at the skin surface. The surface EMG signals were recorded with a grid of point electrodes (3 x 3 electrodes) and a ring electrode system at 15 locations over the muscle, with the wires detecting signals from the same intramuscular location. For most subjects, it was possible to classify, from the intramuscular recordings, the activity of the same MUs for all the contractions. The surface EMG signals were averaged with the intramuscularly detected MU action potentials as triggers. In this way, eight spatial filters--longitudinal and transversal, single and double differential (LSD, TSD, LDD, TDD), Laplacian (NDD), inverse binomial filter of the second order (IB2), inverse rectangle filter (IR), and differential ring system (C1)--could be compared on the basis of their spatial selectivity. The distance from the source (transversal with respect to the muscle fiber orientation) after which the surface detected potential did not exceed +/- 5% of the maximal peak-to-peak amplitude (detection distance) was statistically smaller for the 2-D systems and TDD than for the other filters. The MU action potential duration was significantly shorter with LDD and with the 2-D systems than with the other filters. The 2-D filters investigated (including C1) showed very similar performance and were, thus, considered equivalent from the point of view of spatial selectivity.  相似文献

We applied short-time Fourier analysis to surface electromyograms (EMG) recorded during rapid movements, and during isometric contractions at constant forces. We selected a portion of the data to be transformed by multiplying the signal by a Hamming window, then computed the discrete Fourier transform. Shifting the window along the data record, we computed a new spectrum each 10 ms. We displayed the transformed data in spectograms or "voiceprints." This short-time technique allowed us to see time-dependencies in the EMG that are normally averaged in the Fourier analysis of these signals. Spectra of EMG's during isometric contractions at constant force vary in the short (10-20 ms) term. Moments of the spectral distribution show this variability. Short-time spectra from EMG's recorded during rapid movements were much less variable. The windowing technique picked out the typical "three-burst pattern" in EMG's from both wrist and head movements. Spectra during the bursts were more consistent than those during isometric contractions. Furthermore, there was a consistent shift in spectral statistics in the course of the three bursts. Both the center frequency and the variance of the spectral energy distribution grew from the first burst to the second burst in the same muscle. We discuss this pattern with respect to the origin of the EMG bursts in rapid movement. We also extend the analogy between electromyograms and speech signals to argue for future applicability of short-time spectral analysis of EMG.  相似文献

We describe a new method for the estimation of muscle fiber conduction velocity (CV) from surface electromyography (EMG) signals. The method is based on the detection of two surface EMG signals with different spatial filters and on the compensation of the spatial filtering operations by two temporal filters (with CV as unknown parameter) applied to the signals. The transfer functions of the two spatial filters may have different magnitudes and phases, thus the detected signals have not necessarily the same shape. The two signals are first spatially and then temporally filtered and are ideally equal when the CV value selected as a parameter in the temporal filters corresponds to the velocity of propagation of the detected action potentials. This approach is the generalization of the classic spectral matching technique. A theoretical derivation of the method is provided together with its fast implementation by an iterative method based on the Newton's method. Moreover, the lowest CV estimate among those obtained by a number of filter pairs is selected to reduce the CV bias due to nonpropagating signal components. Simulation results indicate that the method described is less sensitive than the classic spectral matching approach to the presence of nonpropagating signals and that the two methods have similar standard deviation of estimation in the presence of additive, white, Gaussian noise. Finally, experimental signals have been collected from the biceps brachii muscle of ten healthy male subjects with an adhesive linear array of eight electrodes. The CV estimates depended on the electrode location with positive bias for the estimates from electrodes close to the innervation or tendon regions, as expected. The proposed method led to significantly lower bias than the spectral matching method in the experimental conditions, confirming the simulation results.  相似文献

Time-alternating biological signals, i.e., alternans, arise in variety of physiological states marked by dynamic instabilities, e.g., period doubling. Normally, a sequence of large–small–large transients, they can exhibit variable patterns over time and space, including spatial discordance. Capture of the early formation of such alternating regions is challenging because of the spatiotemporal similarities between noise and the small-amplitude alternating signals close to the bifurcation point. We present a new approach for automatic detection of alternating signals in large noisy spatiotemporal datasets by exploiting quantitative measures of alternans evolution, e.g., temporal persistence, and by preserving phase information. The technique specifically targets low amplitude, relatively short alternating sequences and is validated by combinatorics-derived probabilities and empirical datasets with white noise. Using high-resolution optical mapping in live cardiomyocyte networks, exhibiting calcium alternans, we reveal for the first time early fine-scale alternans, close to the noise level, which are linked to the later formation of larger regions and evolution of spatially discordant alternans. This robust method aims at quantification and better understanding of the onset of cardiac arrhythmias and can be applied to general analysis of space-time alternating signals, including the vicinity of the bifurcation point.   相似文献

In this paper, we propose techniques of surface electromyographic (EMG) signal detection and processing for the assessment of muscle fiber conduction velocity (CV) during dynamic contractions involving fast movements. The main objectives of the study are: 1) to present multielectrode EMG detection systems specifically designed for dynamic conditions (in particular, for CV estimation); 2) to propose a novel multichannel CV estimation method for application to short EMG signal bursts; and 3) to validate on experimental signals different choices of the processing parameters. Linear adhesive arrays of electrodes are presented for multichannel surface EMG detection during movement. A new multichannel CV estimation algorithm is proposed. The algorithm provides maximum likelihood estimation of CV from a set of surface EMG signals with a window limiting the time interval in which the mean square error (mse) between aligned signals is minimized. The minimization of the windowed mse function is performed in the frequency domain, without limitation in time resolution and with an iterative computationally efficient procedure. The method proposed is applied to signals detected from the vastus laterialis and vastus medialis muscles during cycling at 60 cycles/min. Ten subjects were investigated during a 4-min cycling task. The method provided reliable assessment of muscle fatigue for these subjects during dynamic contractions.  相似文献

Initial code acquisition of direct-sequence spread-spectrum signals is typically based on serial multidwell hypothesis tests to limit the costs of mobile terminals. The procedure that searches for the correct code and its actual time offset usually adopts a user-oriented quality criterion based on constant error rates. The false-alarm and miss detection probabilities can be theoretically evaluated by means of the class of generalized Q (GQ) functions. We show that the GQ functions constitute a useful tool not only for analytic performance analysis, but also for the optimized design of initial code synchronization systems. Some examples of application of two-dwell (search/verification) procedures are provided. The mathematical problem consists of the minimization of an objective function (i.e., the mean acquisition time) depending on four parameters (two testing durations and two thresholds) with two constraints (the probabilities of miss detection and false alarm). In particular, we have implemented and analyzed the convergence of the steepest descent and the Newton-Raphson numerical algorithms. The computational cost of the method and the effect of multipath Rayleigh channels are also discussed. The optimized acquisition procedure has evidenced a significant reduction of the mean duration of serial tests in comparison with (suboptimum) previous attempts.  相似文献

An Above-Elbow Prosthesis Employing Programmed Linkages   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The use of EMG signals from residual muscles to control an above-elbow prosthesis has been tried, but presents many problems, not the least being that the prosthesis is under open-loop control. A more satisfactory control technique is extended physiological proprioception where the inherent proprioceptive feedback present within an intact joint is used to provide closed-loop control. We have developed a prototype of a self-contained above-elbow prosthesis which has electric-powered wrist and elbow joints controlled by an Intel 8751 microcomputer. Our technique is to control the positioning of this above-elbow prosthesis using the motion of the intact shoulder. Grasp, which does not involve positioning in space, is separately controlled using EMG signals from biceps and triceps muscles. The relationship between output (wrist and elbow positions) and input (shoulder position) can be set according to a program or linkage stored in the microcomputer memory. A choice from a range of linkages can enable the user to perform different tasks in different situations. We have verified experimentally that after an amputee has learned to associate the position of the wrist and elbow joints of the prosthesis with his shoulder position, the prosthesis will become a very useful aid. Also, because of the repeatability of operation and the inherent closed-loop nature of the prosthesis, the amputee will be motivated to wear it every day.  相似文献

This study introduces the application of nonlinear spatial filters to help identify single motor unit discharge from multiple channel surface electromyogram (EMG) signals during low force contractions. The nonlinear spatial filters simultaneously take into account the instantaneous amplitude and frequency information of a signal. This property was used to enhance motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) in the surface EMG record. The advantages of nonlinear spatial filtering for surface MUAP enhancement were investigated using both simulation and experimental approaches. The simulation results indicate that when compared with various linear spatial filters, nonlinear spatial filtering achieved higher SNR and higher kurtosis of the surface EMG distribution. Over a broad range of SNR and kurtosis levels for the input signal, nonlinear spatial filters achieved at least 32 times greater SNR and 11% higher kurtosis for correlated noise, and at least 15 times greater SNR and 1.7 times higher kurtosis for independent noise, across electrode array channels. The improvements offered by nonlinear spatial filters were further documented by applying them to experimental surface EMG array recordings. Compared with linear spatial filters, nonlinear spatial filters achieved at least nine times greater SNR and 25% higher kurtosis. It follows that nonlinear spatial filters represent a potentially useful supplement to linear spatial filters for detection of motor unit activity in surface EMG at low force contractions.  相似文献

We propose a novel method for estimation of muscle fiber conduction velocity from surface electromyographic (EMG) signals. The method is based on the regression analysis between spatial and temporal frequencies of multiple dips introduced in the EMG power spectrum through the application of a set of spatial filters. This approach leads to a closed analytical expression of conduction velocity as a function of the auto- and cross-spectra of monopolar signals detected along the direction of muscle fibers. The performance of the algorithm was compared with respect to that of the classic single dip approach on simulated and experimental EMG signals. The standard deviation of conduction velocity estimates from simulated single motor unit action potentials was reduced from 1.51 m/s [10 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)] and 1.06 m/s (20 dB SNR) with the single dip approach to 0.51 m/s (10 dB) and 0.23 m/s (20 dB) with the proposed method using 65 dips. When 200 active motor units were simulated in an interference EMG signal, standard deviation of conduction velocity decreased from 0.95 m/s (10 dB SNR) and 0.60 m/s (20 dB SNR) with a single dip to 0.21 m/s (10 dB) and 0.11 m/s (20 dB) with 65 dips. In experimental signals detected from the abductor pollicis brevis muscle, standard deviation of estimation decreased from (mean +/- SD over 5 subjects) 1.25 +/- 0.62 m/s with one dip to 0.10 +/- 0.03 m/s with 100 dips. The proposed method does not imply limitation in resolution of the estimated conduction velocity and does not require any iterative procedure for the estimate since it is based on a closed analytical formulation.  相似文献

The statistical analysis of failure detection decisions in terms of the instantaneous probabilities of false alarm and correct detection for a specified failure magnitude at each check-time have previously been performed for several different failure detection techniques that utilize a Kalman filter. By performing a discrete-time specialization of a result of Gallager and Helstrom on a tightened upper bound for continuous-time level-crossing probabilities, upper bounds on the probabilities of false alarm and correct detection over a time interval have been obtained for the specific technique of CR2 tailnre detection (to allow an accounting for the effect of time correlations of the filter estimates). When these upper bounds are optimized to be as tight as possible to the desired probabilities, the resulting optimization problem for discrete-time is a collection of quadratic programming (QP) problems, which may easily be solved exactly without recourse to approximate solutions as were resorted to in the continuous-time formulation. This technique for evaluating tightened upper bounds on the false alarm and correct detection probabilities may be of general interest, since it can be applied to any failure detection technique or signal detection technique that can relate an exceeding of the deterministic decision threshold by the test statistic directly to a deterministic level being exceeded by a scalar Gaussian random process.  相似文献

We have developed a comprehensive technique to identify single motor unit (SMU) potentials and to decompose overlapped electromyographic (EMG) signals into their constituent SMU potentials. This technique is based on one-channel EMG recordings and is easily implemented for many clinical EMG tests. There are several distinct features of our technique: 1) it measures waveform similarity of SMU potentials in the wavelet domain, which gives this technique significant advantages over other techniques; 2) it classifies spikes based on the nearest neighboring algorithm, which is less sensitive to waveform variation; 3) it can effectively separate compound potentials based on a maximum signal energy deduction algorithm, which is fast and relatively reliable; and 4) it also utilizes the information on discharge regularities of SMU's to help correct possible decomposition errors. The performance of this technique has been evaluated by using simulated EMG signals composed of up to eight different discharging SMU's corrupted with white noise, and also by using real EMG signals recorded at levels up to 50% maximum voluntary contraction. We believe that it is a very useful technique to study SMU discharge patterns and recruitment of motor units in patients with neuromuscular disorders in clinical EMG laboratories.  相似文献

A constrained point-process filtering mechanism for prediction of electromyogram (EMG) signals from multichannel neural spike recordings is proposed here. Filters from the Kalman family are inherently suboptimal in dealing with non-Gaussian observations, or a state evolution that deviates from the Gaussianity assumption. To address these limitations, we modeled the non-Gaussian neural spike train observations by using a generalized linear model that encapsulates covariates of neural activity, including the neurons' own spiking history, concurrent ensemble activity, and extrinsic covariates (EMG signals). In order to predict the envelopes of EMGs, we reformulated the Kalman filter in an optimization framework and utilized a nonnegativity constraint. This structure characterizes the nonlinear correspondence between neural activity and EMG signals reasonably. The EMGs were recorded from 12 forearm and hand muscles of a behaving monkey during a grip-force task. In the case of limited training data, the constrained point-process filter improved the prediction accuracy when compared to a conventional Wiener cascade filter (a linear causal filter followed by a static nonlinearity) for different bin sizes and delays between input spikes and EMG output. For longer training datasets, results of the proposed filter and that of the Wiener cascade filter were comparable.  相似文献

Dependability modeling plays a major role in the design, validation and maintenance of real-time computing systems. Typical models provide measures such as mean time to failure, reliability and safety as functions of the component failure rates and fault/error coverage probabilities. In this paper we propose a modeling technique that allows the coverage to be dependent upon the local (i.e. embedded at task level) and global (i.e. available at system level) fault/error detection and recovery mechanisms. This approach also ensures important savings in terms of the simulation time required for deriving the coverage probabilities. Stochastic. reward nets are employed as a unique dependability modeling framework. For illustrating the usefulness of this technique we analyze dependability of a railroad control computer.  相似文献

Identification of the innervation zone is widely used to optimize the accuracy and precision of noninvasive surface electromyography (EMG) signals because the EMG signal is strongly influenced by innervation zones. However, simply structured fusiform muscle, such as biceps brachii muscle, has been employed mainly due to the simplicity with which the propagation from raw EMG signals can be observed. In this study, the optimum electrode location (OEL), free from innervational influence, was investigated by the propagation pattern of action potentials for brachii muscles and more complicated deltoid muscle structures using an automatized signal analysis technique. The technique employed newly developed computer software with additional clinical uses and minimized subjective differences. EMG signals were recorded using surface array electrodes during voluntary isometric contractions obtained from 12 healthy male subjects. Peaks in EMG signals were detected and averaged for each muscle. The propagation patterns and OEL were examined from biceps brachii muscles for all subjects and from deltoid muscles for seven subjects. The estimated locations were partially confirmed by comparing the root mean squares of the EMG signals. These results show that propagation patterns and OEL could be estimated simply and automatically even from the surface EMG signals of deltoid muscles.  相似文献
