The high-temperature flexural strength of hot-pressed silicon nitride (Si3 N4 ) and Si3 N4 -whisker-reinforced Si3 N4 -matrix composites has been measured at a crosshead speed of 1.27 mm/min and temperatures up to 1400°C in a nitrogen atmosphere. Load–displacement curves for whisker-reinforced composites showed nonelastic fracture behavior at 1400°C. In contrast, such behavior was not observed for monolithic Si3 N4 . Microstructures of both materials have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that grain-boundary sliding could be responsible for strength degradation in both monolithic Si3 N4 and its whisker composites. The origin of the nonelastic failure behavior of Si3 N4 -whisker composite at 1400°C was not positively identified but several possibilities are discussed. 相似文献

Hot isostatically pressed silicon nitride was produced by densifying Si3 N4 powder compacts and reaction-bonded Si3 N4 (RBSN) parts with yttria as a sintering additive. The microstructure was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and density measurements. The influence of the microstructure on fracture strength, creep, and oxidation behavior was investigated. It is assumed that the higher amount of oxygen in the Si3 N4 starting powder compared with the RBSN starting material leads to an increased amount of liquid phase during densification. This results in grain growth and in a larger amount of grain boundary phase in the hot isostatically pressed material. Compared with the hot isostatically pressed RBSN samples therefore, strength decreases whereas the creep rate and the weight gain during oxidation increase. 相似文献

The effect of aluminum and yttrium nitrate additives on the densification of monolithic Si3 N4 and a Si3 N4 /SiC composite by pressureless sintering was compared with that of oxide additives. The surfaces of Si3 N4 particles milled with aluminum and yttrium nitrates, which were added as methanol solutions, were coated with a different layer containing Al and Y from that of Si3 N4 particles milled with oxide additives. Monolithic Si3 N4 could be sintered to 94% of theoretical density (TD) at 1500°C with nitrate additives. The sintering temperature was about 100°C lower than the case with oxide additives. After pressureless sintering at 1750°C for 2 h in N2 , the bulk density of a Si3 N4 /20 wt% SiC composite reached 95% TD with nitrate additives. 相似文献

The densification behavior of Si3 N4 containing MgO was studied in detail. It was concluded that MgO forms a liquid phase (most likely a magnesium silicate). This liquid wets and allows atomic transfer of Si3 N4 . Evidence of a second-phase material between the Si3 N4 grains was obtained through etching studies. Transformation of α- to β-Si3 N4 during hot-pressing is not necessary for densification. 相似文献

The properties of Si3 N4 compositions produced by nitriding slip-cast Si bodies containing up to 16% Si3 N4 grog were determined. The introduction of grog consistently lowered the densities, the room- and high-temperature strengths, and the resistance to oxidation. The open structure of the grog-containing mixes favored low-temperature gas-phase reactions leading to α-Si3 N4 formation. In higher-density compositions containing predominantly Si, gas-liquid-solid reactions at higher temperatures produced a relatively greater content of the β phase. 相似文献

We report here the study on tribological behavior of α-Sialon in aqueous medium. The results derived from a wide range of test conditions are briefly discussed. A reduction in friction coefficient from 0.7 to 0.03 and a decrease in wear rate by two orders of magnitude were achieved under low load (9.8 N) and high speed (>0.54 m/s) conditions. The tribological behavior of α-Sialon/Si3 N4 ceramics was then compared with Si3 N4 /Si3 N4 tribopairs. 相似文献

The development of microstructure in hot-pressed Sia N4 was studiehd for a typical Si3 N4 powder with and without BeSiN2 as a densification aid. The effect of hot-pressing temperature on density, α- to β-Si3 N4 conversion and specific surface area showed that BeSiN2 appears to increase the mobility of the system by enhancing densification, α- to β-Si3 N4 transformation, and grain growth at temperatures between 1450° and 1800°. These processes appear to occur in the presence of a liquid phase. 相似文献

Porous Si3 N4 ceramics were synthesized by pressureless sintering of green compacts prepared using slip casting of slurries containing Si3 N4 , 5 wt% Y2 O3 +2 wt% Al2 O3 , and 0–60% organic whiskers composed of phenol–formaldehyde resin with solids loading up to 60 wt%. Rheological properties of slurries were optimized to achieve a high degree of dispersion with a high solid-volume fraction. Samples were heated at 800°C in air and sintered at 1850°C in a N2 atmosphere. Porosities ranging from 0% to 45% were obtained by the whisker contents (corresponding to 0–60 vol% whisker). Samples exhibited a uniform pore distribution. Their rod-shaped pore morphology originated from burnout of whiskers, and an extremely dense Si3 N4 matrix. 相似文献

The high-temperature chemical stability of hot-pressed Si3 N4 was studied between 600° and 1450°C. Reactions were followed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. In air, this material begins to oxidize at 700° to 750°C; a distinct amorphous siO2 surface layer results after 24 h at 750°C-Concomitant formation of cristobalite occurs, depending on exposure time, and is enhanced as temperature is Increased. Magnesium and calcium magnesium silicates form above 1000°C. The data suggest that impurities, e.g. Mg, Ca, and Fe, greatly lower the oxidation resistance of Si3 N4 in air. 相似文献

The mixed-mode fracture of hot-pressed Si3 N4 was investigated using inclined indentation surface flaws in bending and large crack geometries in combined tension/torsion. Non-coplanar fracture was observed in all cases. Values of KIc , KIIc , and KIIIc stress intensity factors were obtained, with ratios KIIc /KIc = 0.79 and KIIIc /KIc = 1.55 observed. For large cracks, mode II conditions had more of an effect on mode I fracture than mode III conditions. The mixed-mode I-II fracture of surface flaws was significantly different from that for large cracks, suggesting surface flaw shear resistance effects. A model describing these effects was derived, based on the ratio of the crack-opening displacement to the crack surface asperity height. 相似文献

Si3 N4 composite materials containing up to 20 vol% SiC whiskers were slip cast and pressureless sintered at 1820°C and 0.13 MPa of N2 . Viscosimetry showed no influence of whisker loading on the rheology of the highly concentrated aqueous slips up to 15 vol% whiskers. During casting the whiskers were preferentially aligned parallel to the mold surfaces. Depending on the whisker loading, green densities of 0.64 to 0.69 fractional density could be achieved. Strong anisotropic shrinkage occurred during sintering with a maximum linear shrinkage of 21% perpendicular but only 7% parallel to the whisker plane. With increasing whisker content from 0 to 20 vol% sintered densities decreased from 0.98 to 0.88, respectively. 相似文献

The cyclic fatigue behavior of two grades of hot-pressed silicon nitride was investigated. Flat, cantilever-type specimens were tested at temperatures up to 1300°C, in air, where the load was applied by an eccentric driver rotating at 1800 rpm, with a zero mean stress. The lifetime of the lower purity material at temperatures up to 1200°C was controlled by a stress corrosion mechanism. Above 1200°, and for both grades of material, plastic deformation, probably by grain boundary sliding, was rate controlling. 相似文献

Impurity phases in commercial hot-pressed Si3 N4 were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. In addition to the dominant, β-Si3 N4 phase, small amounts of Si2 N2 O, SiC, and WC were found. Significantly, a continuous grain-boundary phase was observed in the ∼ 25 high-angle boundaries examined. This film is ∼ 10 Å thick between, β-Si3 N4 grains and ∼ 30 Å thick between Si2 N2 O and β-Si3 N4 grains. 相似文献

This paper deals with the densification and phase transformation during pressureless sintering of Si3 N4 with LiYO2 as the sintering additive. The dilatometric shrinkage data show that the first Li2 O- rich liquid forms as low as 1250°C, resulting in a significant reduction of sintering temperature. On sintering at 1500°C the bulk density increases to more than 90% of the theoretical density with only minor phase transformation from α-Si3 N4 to β-Si3 N4 taking place. At 1600°C the secondary phase has been completely converted into a glassy phase and total conversion of α-Si3 N4 to β-Si3 N4 takes place. The grain growth is anisotropic, leading to a microstructure which has potential for enhanced fracture toughness. Li2 O evaporates during sintering. Thus, the liquid phase is transient and the final material might have promising mechanical properties as well as promising high-temperature properties despite the low sintering temperature. The results show that the Li2 O−Y2 O3 system can provide very effective low-temperature sintering additives for silicon nitride. 相似文献

Si3 N4 /MoSi2 and Si3 N4 /WSi2 composites were prepared by reaction-bonding processes using as starting materials powder mixtures of Si-Mo and Si-W, respectively. A presintering step in an At-base atmosphere was used before nitriding for the formation of MoSi2 and WSi2 ; the nitridation in a N2 -base atmosphere was followed after presintering with the total stepwise cycle of 1350°C × 20 h +1400°C × 20 h +1450°C × 2 h. The final phases obtained in the two different composites were Si3 N4 and MoSi2 or WSi2 ; no free elemental Si and Mo or W were detected by X-ray diffraction. 相似文献
