This paper presents experimental results and a numerical analysis of the reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in flexure with various externally bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) configurations. The aim of the experimental work was to investigate the parameters that may delay the intermediate crack debonding of the bottom CFRP laminate, and increase the load carrying capacity and CFRP strength utilization ratio. Ten rectangular RC specimens with a clear span of 4.2?m, categorized in two series, were tested to evaluate the effect of using the additional U-shaped CFRP systems on the intermediate crack debonding of the bottom laminate. Two different configurations of the additional systems were proposed, namely, continuous U-shaped wet layup sheets and spaced side-bonded CFRP L-shaped laminates. The fiber orientation effect of the side-bonded sheets was also investigated. A numerical analysis using an incremental nonlinear displacement-controlled 3D finite-element (FE) model was developed to investigate the flexural and CFRP/concrete interfacial responses of the tested beams. The finite-element model accounts for the orthotropic behavior of the CFRP laminates. An appropriate bond-slip model was adopted to characterize the behavior of the CFRP/concrete interface. Comparisons between the FE predictions and experimental results show very good agreement in terms of the load-deflection and load-strain relationships, ultimate capacities, and failure modes of the beams.  相似文献

The results of an experimental and analytical investigation of shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with externally bonded (EB) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strips and sheets are presented, with emphasis on the effect of the strip-width-to-strip-spacing ratio on the contribution of FRP (Vf). In all, 14 tests were performed on 4,520-mm-long T-beams. RC beams strengthened in shear using carbon FRP (CFRP) strips with different width-to-spacing ratios were considered, and their performance was investigated. In addition, these results are compared with those obtained for RC beams strengthened with various numbers of layers of continuous CFRP sheet. Moreover, various existing equations that express the effect of FRP strip width and concrete-member width and that have been proposed based on single or double FRP-to-concrete direct pullout tests are checked for RC beams strengthened in shear with CFRP strips. The objectives of this study are to investigate the following: (1)?the effectiveness of EB discontinuous FRP sheets (FRP strips) compared with that of EB continuous FRP sheets; (2)?the optimum strip-width-to-strip-spacing ratio for FRP (i.e., the optimum FRP rigidity); (3)?the effect of FRP strip location with respect to internal transverse-steel location; (4)?the effect of FRP strip width; and (5)?the effect of internal transverse-steel reinforcement on the CFRP shear contribution.  相似文献

Due to concerns with corrosion, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) as a replacement to conventional steel reinforcement has greatly increased over the last decade. Researchers have identified the distinctive mechanical and bond properties of FRP reinforcement that prevent the use of existing relationships to establish serviceability of concrete structures reinforced with such products. Although studies have modified these empirical relationships to describe the behavior of structures reinforced with FRP reinforcement, this paper will provide a new approach to estimate deflection of concrete beams by considering material properties of the reinforcement and incorporating the effects of tension stiffening. Accuracy and precision of the approach was established by performing a statistical analysis on a database containing 171 FRP-reinforced concrete beams. Results were compared to those from existing proposed relationships and indicate the potential of the method to estimate deflection at various service conditions.  相似文献

As existing structures age or are required to meet the changing demands on our civil infrastructure, poststrengthening and retrofitting are inevitable. A relatively recent technique to strengthen reinforced concrete (RC) beams in flexure uses fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strips or sheets glued to the tension side of the beam. A number of researchers have reported that the failure mode of an FRP-strengthened RC beam can change from the desired ductile mode of an underreinforced beam to a brittle one. This paper analyzes the effects of this strengthening technique on the response and failure modes of a reference RC beam. A nonlinear RC beam element model with bond-slip between the concrete and the FRP plate is used to study how the failure mechanism of simply supported strengthened RC beams is affected by the following parameters: plate length, plate width, plate stiffness, and loading type. The beam geometry is kept constant. The parametric studies confirm the experimentally observed results according to which the most commonly observed failure modes due to loss of composite actions are affected by the plate geometric and material properties. In addition, distributed loads (difficult to apply in an experimental test) may not be as sensitive to plate debonding in the region of maximum bending moment as are beams subjected to point loads.  相似文献

Due to increasing popularity of using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) for external strengthening of concrete structures, an urgent demand for understanding the structural behavior of FRP-strengthened structures has been emerging. Unlike conventional reinforced concrete (RC) structures, FRP-strengthened members can exhibit additional flexural capacity in the postyielding stage. This makes RC models for predicting deflection inapplicable in case of FRP-strengthened structures. Therefore, some models have been explicitly developed for evaluating deflection of the strengthened structures. However, most existing models are empirically based, verified with limited experimental results, and require in some cases sophisticated calculation procedures. Accordingly, there is still a demand for a rational and more convenient model for predicting deflection of FRP-strengthened beams. In the current paper, Bischoff’s model, originally proposed for RC and FRP reinforced structures, was extended. Consequently, the developed model is applicable to FRP-strengthened concrete beams besides its validity to both RC and FRP reinforced beams. Validation of the model with some available test data confirmed its accuracy.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted on the flexural behavior of partially bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened concrete beams focusing on the improvement of ductility. An analytical model was developed based on the curvature approach to predict the behavior of beams strengthened with partially bonded FRP systems. The result of the analysis showed that ductility of the partially bonded system was improved while sustaining high load carrying capacity in comparison to the fully bonded system. To verify the analytical model, an experimental program was carried out with reinforced concrete beams strengthened with the externally bonded FRP system. A comparison of the analytical prediction and experimental results showed good agreement.  相似文献

In recent years, numerous investigations have addressed the shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Despite this research effort, the mechanisms of shear resistance that are developed in such a strengthening system have not yet been fully documented and explained. This clearly inhibits the development of rational and reliable code specifications. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the shear resistance mechanisms involved in RC beams strengthened in shear with externally bonded FRP. It is based on results obtained from an experimental program, involving 17 tests, performed on full size T beams, and using a comprehensive and carefully optimized measuring device. The resistance mechanisms are studied by observing the evolution of the behavior of the strengthened beams as the applied loads are increased. The local behavior of the FRP and the transverse steel, in particular in the failure zones, are thoroughly examined. The operative resistance mechanisms are also studied through the load sharing among the concrete, the FRP, and the transverse steel, at increasing levels of applied load.  相似文献

This paper discusses the experimental result on the long-term deflection and cracking behavior of concrete beams prestressed with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons, under sustained long-term service load, including cracked and uncracked sections. Six full-scale beams were cast and tested. The experimental parameters included the level of prestress, the level of sustained service loading, and concrete strengths. The experimental results showed that the performance of concrete beams prestressed with CFRP tendons meets the serviceability criteria in terms of deflection and cracking. The test results also showed that the long-term performance of concrete beams prestressed with CFRP tendons was comparable to those prestressed with steel tendons. Furthermore, the test results showed that with the increase of concrete strength, the serviceability performance also improved with concrete beams prestressed with CFRP tendons.  相似文献

The results of an experimental and numerical study of the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) laminates are presented in this paper. In the experimental program, ten strengthened beams and two unstrengthened beams are tested to failure under monotonic loading. A number of external GFRP laminate layers and bond length of GFRP laminates in shear span are taken as the test variables. Longitudinal GFRP strain development and interfacial shear stress distribution from the tests are examined. The experimental results generally showed that both flexural strength and stiffness of reinforced concrete beams could be increased by such a bonding technique. In the numerical study, an eight-node interface element is developed to simulate the interface behavior between the concrete and GFRP laminates. This element is implemented into the MARC software package for the finite-element analyses of GFRP laminate strengthened reinforced concrete beams. Reasonably good correlations between experimental and numerical results are achieved.  相似文献

Reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in flexure with a bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plate may fail by intermediate crack (IC) debonding, in which debonding initiates at a critical section in the high moment region and propagates to a plate end. This paper first presents a finite-element (FE) model based on the smeared crack approach for concrete for the numerical simulation of the IC debonding process. This finite-element model includes two novel features: (1) the interfacial behavior within the major flexural crack zone is differentiated from that outside this zone and (2) the effect of local slip concentrations near a flexural crack is captured using a dual local debonding criterion. The FE model is shown to be accurate through comparisons with the results of 42 beam tests. The paper also presents an accurate and simple strength model based on interfacial shear stress distributions from finite-element analyses. The new strength model is shown to be accurate through comparisons with the test results of 77 beams, including the 42 beams used in verifying the FE model, and is suitable for direct use in design.  相似文献

This paper presents the main features of an analytical model recently developed to predict the near-surface mounted (NSM) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strips shear strength contribution to a reinforced concrete (RC) beam throughout the beam’s loading process. It assumes that the possible failure modes that can affect the ultimate behavior of an NSM FRP strip comprise: loss of bond (debonding); concrete semiconical tensile fracture; mixed shallow-semicone-plus-debonding; and strip tensile fracture. That model was developed by fulfilling equilibrium, kinematic compatibility, and constitutive law of both the adhered materials and the bond between them. The debonding process of an NSM FRP strip to concrete was interpreted and closed-form equations were derived after proposing a new local bond stress-slip relationship. The model proposed also addressed complex phenomena such as the interaction between the force transferred to the surrounding concrete through bond stresses and concrete fracture as well as the interaction among adjacent strips. The main features of the proposed modeling strategy are shown along with the main underlying physical-mechanical concepts and assumptions. Using recent experimental data, the predictive performance of the model is assessed. The model is also applied to single out the influence of relevant parameters on the NSM technique effectiveness for the shear strengthening of RC beams.  相似文献

Steel-reinforced polymer (SRP) composite materials are very attractive due to their low weight and high strength. The ease of installation which significantly reduces repair time and expense is another major advantage. One of the main disadvantages of SRP materials is that the matrices used for their fabrication are typically organic and thus they are susceptible to fire. In this study, a newly developed retrofit system is being used. It consists of high strength steel fibers impregnated in a fireproof inorganic matrix. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of this hybrid rehabilitation system on the fatigue performance of strengthened reinforced concrete beams. Sixteen 100?mm×150?mm×1200?mm reinforced concrete beams with enough transverse reinforcement to avoid shear failure were used in this study. Nine beams were strengthened with steel fiber sheets on their tension faces. The results from the present study indicate that the fatigue life of reinforced concrete beams, subjected to the same cycling load, can be significantly extended using externally bonded sheets. A rather important finding is that although the strengthening system increases the fatigue life of the beams, the failure mechanism remains the same in both strengthened and nonstrengthened beams. Thus, it is possible to predict the fatigue life of a cyclically loaded beam using existing fatigue models. Furthermore, no delamination failures were observed due to fatigue loading.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of experimental and analytical studies carried out to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with end-anchored partially bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. A total of six beams, each 2400 mm long, 150 mm wide, and 250 mm deep with a tension steel reinforcement ratio of 1.18%, were tested. One beam was left unstrengthened as the control, another beam was strengthened with a fully bonded CFRP strip, and the remaining four beams were strengthened with partially bonded CFRP strips placed on the tension face of the beam and fixed at both ends using a mechanical anchor. The influence of varying the CFRP unbonded length (250 mm, 750 mm, 2×500 mm, and 1,250 mm) on the beam flexural response was studied. The experimental results revealed that end-anchored partially bonded CFRP strips significantly enhanced the ultimate capacity of the control beam and performed better than the fully bonded strip with no end-anchorage. This observation stresses the importance of end-anchorage in such strengthening schemes, especially considering that the end-anchored partially bonded CFRP strengthened beams showed similar flexural behavior trends. Finally, an inelastic section analysis procedure that takes into consideration the incompatibility of strains was developed to verify the obtained test results. The analysis produced good predictions of the experimental results in terms of the moment-curvature response and showed the effect of CFRP unbonded length on the strain of the internal tension steel.  相似文献

This paper presents the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets using nonmetallic anchor systems. The developed nonmetallic anchor systems replace the permanent steel anchorage. Nine doubly reinforced concrete beams are tested with various types of nonmetallic anchor systems such as nonanchored U-wraps, mechanically anchored U-wraps, and CFRP sheet-anchored U-wraps. The flexural behavior of the tested beams, including detailed failure modes of each nonmetallic anchor system, is investigated. The study shows that the developed nonmetallic anchors are more effective in resisting peeling-off cracks compared to the permanent steel anchors and the beams strengthened with the nonmetallic anchors provide comparable load-carrying capacity with respect to the steel anchored control beam.  相似文献

Fundamental concepts of tension stiffening are used to explain why Branson’s equation for the effective moment of inertia Ie does not predict deflection well for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete beams. The tension stiffening component in Branson’s equation is shown to depend on the ratio of gross-to-cracked moment of inertia (Ig/Icr), and gives too much tension stiffening for beams with an Ig/Icr ratio greater than 3. FRP beams typically have an Ig/Icr ratio greater than 5, leading to a much stiffer response and underprediction of computed deflections as observed by others in the past. One common approach to computing deflection of FRP reinforced concrete beams has been to use a modified form of the Branson equation. This paper presents a rational development of appropriate modification factors needed to reduce the tension stiffening component in Branson’s original expression to realistic levels. Computed deflections using this approach give reasonable results with the right modification factor, and compare well with a more general unified approach that incorporates a realistic tension stiffening model. Comparison is made with the existing and past correction factors recommended by ACI 440 for predicting deflection of FRP beams. The method presently used by ACI 440 gives reasonable estimates of deflection for glass and carbon FRP reinforced beams. However, this method underestimates deflection of aramid FRP reinforced beams and is restricted to rectangular sections. A proposal is made for adoption of a simple modification factor that works well for all types of FRP bar and beam cross-sectional shape.  相似文献

This paper deals with reinforced concrete beams strengthened by means of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets. The scope of the work is to discuss and compare an exact and an approximate approach to the computation of the flexural load-carrying capacity of the strengthened beam. The two approaches differ from one another in the way they take into account the extent of the load already acting throughout strengthening operations. To achieve this goal a numerical model is presented and validated by comparing its output with that of 46 experimental tests taken from the literature. The numerical model is then adopted to perform a numerical parametric analysis of a wide range of practical applications, excluding all cases of FRP delamination, and useful conclusions are drawn.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of experimental and theoretical investigations that study the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes (RCFFTs) beams. The experimental program consists of 10 circular beams [6 RCFFT and 4 control reinforced concrete (RC) beams] with a total length of 2,000?mm, tested under four-point bending load. The experimental results were used to review and verify the applicability of various North American code provisions and some available equations in the literature to predict deflection of RCFFT beams. The measured deflections and the experimental values of the effective moment of inertia were analyzed and compared with those predicted using available models. The results of the analysis indicated that the behavior of steel and FRP-RCFFT beams under the flexural load was significantly different than that of steel and FRP-RC members. This is attributed to the confining effect of the FRP tubes and their axial contribution. This confining behavior in turn enhanced the overall flexural behavior and improved the tension stiffening of RCFFT beams. For that, the predicted tension stiffening of steel and FRP-RCFFT beams using the conventional equations (steel or FRP-RC member) underestimates the flexural response; therefore, the predicted deflections are overestimated. Based on the analysis of the test results, the Branson’s equation for the effective moment of inertia of RC structures is modified, and new equations are developed to accurately predict the deflection of concrete-filled FRP tube (CFFT) beams reinforced with steel or FRP bars.  相似文献

Bonding a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheet to the tension-side surface of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is often performed to upgrade the flexural capacity and stiffness. Except for upper concrete crushing, FRP sheet reinforcing RC structure may fail in sheet rupture, sheet peeloff failure due to opening of a critical diagonal crack, or concrete cover delamination failure from the sheet end. Accompanying the occurrence of these failure modes, reinforcing effects of the FRP sheet will be lost and load-carrying capacity of the RC structures will be decreased suddenly. This study is devoted to developing a numerical analysis method by using a three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element method to simulate the load-carrying capacity of RC beams failed in the FRP sheet peeloff mode. Here, the discrete crack approach was employed to consider geometrical discontinuities such as opening of cracks, slipping of rebar, and debonding of the FRP sheet. Comparisons between analytical and experimental results confirm that the proposed numerical analysis method is appropriate for estimating the load-carrying capacity and failure behavior of RC beams flexurally reinforced with a FRP sheet.  相似文献

Flexural behavior and serviceability performance of 24 full-scale concrete beams reinforced with carbon-, glass-, and aramid-fiber-reinforced-polymer (FRP) bars are investigated. The beams were 3,300?mm long with a rectangular cross section of 200?mm in width and 300?mm in depth. Sixteen beams were reinforced with carbon-FRP bars, four beams were reinforced with glass-FRP bars, two beams were reinforced with aramid-FRP bars, and two were reinforced with steel, serving as control specimens. Two types of FRP bars with different surface textures were considered: sand-coated bars and ribbed-deformed bars. The beams were tested to failure in four-point bending over a clear span of 2,750?mm. The test results are reported in terms of deflection, crack-width, strains in concrete and reinforcement, flexural capacity, and mode of failure. The experimental results were compared to the available design codes.  相似文献
